Gamma Draconis Breached! (Space RP, enemy wanted)

Klonor

A pair of Valkyrie Interceptors flashed through space, moving almost to fast for the eye to see. Their guns flared, bursts of fire screaming through space towards their fleeing prey. Fleeing like a gazelles before the lions were a group of somewhat larger ships, obviously gunboats of some kind. The prey was fast and maneuverable, but there hasn't been a ship built which can outrun a Valkyrie.

Catching a glimpse out of a corner of the eye, the escaping ships suddenly veered toward a dark mass off to the side. They darted in and out of the massive cluster of twisted metal, the framework of an Orion class Destroyer currently under construction. Prey and predator popped in and out of holes which seemed like they shouldn't be big enough for ships half their size, metal scraping against metal as they passed through holes that were to small. Yet the distance never shrank, and the fleeing ships were almost at the end of the construction areas. There would then be a few precious seconds where they'd be free and the Valkyries would still be inside, giving them an opportunity to fly clear out of the system with their information. This was unacceptable.

Yet there wasn't much the Interceptor pilots could do, for their ships were still half a kilometer behind when the targets popped out of the labyrinth that would soon be a ship and headed for deep space. Of course, there's more than just two Valkyrie Interceptors in Gamma Draconis.

It slowly glided into view of the escaping ships, it's massive size giving an impression of slothful movement. Yet impressions are often incorrect, as this ship made quite clear. For, though it was massive, it moved at a speed that put ships half its size to shame.

The fleeing ships finally caught a glimpse of what they were running towards and visibly shuddered, their engines suddenly powering back the way they came and struggling to overcome their momentum. Unfortunately, their struggle was in vain.

With a Beam of Light brighter than the brightest of stars the massive ship snuffed out the fleeing vessels in a bare few seconds, leaving nothing but a few scattered atoms as evidence that they'd been there.

With that the New Dawn 03 turned and resumed its patrol, the area still glowing from it's Nexus Cannon that had just laid waste to the enemy.

OOC:

Okay, I need somebody to RP as the nation or group which sent the recently deceased vessels. You can be a spy ring which wanted to sell the info for money, another nation planning an attack, etc.

We'll start the RP where this post ended, meaning your learning about the death of the ships, planning the next move, making the next move, peting a monkey, or something else along those lines.

Please TG me your request to be the enemy, I'll get back to you as soon as I can. But let me just make one thing clear: If you can't or won't spell, you will not be in this RP.

Please TG me your request to be the enemy

You know, I do make these requests for a reason.

Anyway, the description of what vessel? The only description of the bad guys were "somewhat larger ships, obviously gunboats of some kind" and I'm pretty sure every nation here has a ship that can match that in some way.

Also, though it has been a long time since we've been in an RP together, the Shivan Invasion wouldn't work to well right now. I have big plans and that would really gunk everything up.

OOC: This was cleared with Klonor. Also, I'm going to be RPing an enemy in this, not the enemy who had the gunboats, so that position is still open.
----

Citizen Captain Michael Parsons, CO of the ISS Brazen silently watched the holoplot's projection of the Klonorian forces chasing down the mysterious gunboats. He smirked as their light dots finally vanished from the display. Took 'em long enough, he thought. "Captain, Centaur reports that they just detected a freighter coming out of subspace. Range....two million klicks."

"Any chance they've spotted us yet?"

"No sir. Our emissions are probably too low for them to pick up with just a casual scan. If we go active they will."

Parsons looked over at his Exec, Citizen Commander Watkins. "What do you think?"

Watkins smiled evilly, "If they came in all fat, dumb, and happy, I say we show them that space isn't a nice place."

Parsons smiled in agreement, "I concur. Coms, signal Centaur and Abyss, inform them we're going to General Quarters and instruct them to do the same."

The three sleek battlecruiser rotated in space, their power output climbing dramatically as they brought their impeller nodes and sidewalls up. EW drones launched out to play hell with any system sensors that did happen to be looking their way, and a tightbeam com signal was sent to the freighter.

"Unidentified freighter, you are ordered to match our velocity and vector. You are ordered not to sent any emergency communications, any resistance will be met with deadly force."

OOC: US, what the hell are you talking about?

IC:

The ASFr Troquer popped back into real space, the Sub-Space Node collapsing behind it.

"Well, that was easy enough. I always thought my first Hop as Captain would be a bit more exciting."

"I'm sure it will expand quite a bit when you re-tell the story."

"You're probably right John. They always to seem to grow as the years pass."

"Yes, sir. Shall I take us into the dock now."

"Yes, that'd be best. Prepare a small Intra-system hop to get us close enough, then bring us in manually."

"Yes, sir."

The routine calculations are made, the Jump-Drive is powered, and before the Jump can be made they receive a rather unpleasant transmission.

"Unidentified freighter, you are ordered to match our velocity and vector. You are ordered not to sent any emergency communications, any resistance will be met with deadly force."

"Well................this sucks."

"Yeah. Okay, send a Beam Transmission to the Base then rotate the ship. Charge up the Turret, then get us the hell out of here!"

"What, seriously? Are you insane? We have a single Laser Turret! We'll be killed in seconds!"

"Yes, but those few seconds we live might be enough time for the Base to get reinforcements out here to save our asses. Now move!"

"They're powering up weapons, Captain."
"Idiots. Fire a warning shot."
A missile spat from one of the Brazen's forward tubes, racing toward the freighter. At the last possible second, it veered up and detonated with the white glare of a fusion warhead.

"Unidentified freighter, you are ordered to match our velocity and vector now. You will power down your weapons immediately. If you do not follow these orders you will be fired upon."

"Yes, sir."

"Here's hoping they wont just kill us purely for spite."

Citizen Lieutenant Werner finished changing into civilian clothing, then boarded the battlecruiser's marine pinnace. Pirates weren't supposed to look military. The other marines were all wearing power armor with no indentifying markers on it, and each carried a flechette or pulser rifle. The pilot brought the pinnace's engines online, and the craft lifted up off of the hangar deck and into space. As they neared the freighter, the pilot brought up his scanners and mapped the hull of the ship, indentifying an airlock of suitable size to dock with. The pinnace settled down onto the hull, airlocks connected, and two marines went through first, then Werner. He looked at the crewmen waitin for them at the airlock. "Take us to the bridge." he ordered. Behind him, the rest of the boarding party cycled through the airlock.

"You got it! Enjoy the ship! Have fun! Bye!"

The Captain, former Captain now that he no longer has a ship, practically sprints to the escape pods, shoving a few other people out of his way first.

"Let's get the hell out of here!"

At that moment, just as the escape pod was seperating from the ship, the cavalry arrived.

Popping out of Sub-Space and heading towards the pirates like a bull aimed at giving it prey the horns came the 1'st Fleet's 3'rd Battle Group, the primary anti-pirating force in the system. Comprised of 1 Leviathan class Heavy Cruiser, 2 Fenris class Strike Cruisers, and 4 Mercury class Corvettes the squad had more than enough power to eliminate the threat sitting before it.

"This is Commodore Williams of the Klonor Space Corps, leader of the 3'rd Battle Group. Stand down at once, lower your shields and surrender your vessel. You will not receive a second warning."

Citizen Captain Parsons looked over again to Citizen Commander Watkin's station. "Recommendation?"

"We get the boarding party back over here, blow away the freighter, and then translate to hyper."

"Exactly what I was thinking. Tac, what's the range to the enemy?"

"1.5 million kilometers, Citizen Captain."

"Open fire with port missile tubes, Coms, instruct Centaur and Abyss to do the same, although they should have figured it out by now. Then tell Citizen Lieutenant Werner to get him and his men back onboard immediately."

A slight vibration passed through the ship as it's missile tubes hurled 27 impeller missiles into space, all targeted upon the Leviathan. The two Sultans fired a few seconds afterward, each targetting one of the smaller Fenris cruisers.
---
The boarding party charged through the passageways of the freighter, running for the pinnace. "Move your worthless asses!" Werner shouted as encouragement.

They cycled through the airlocks as fast as possible, cramming as many men into each cycle as possible. As soon as they were all through, the pinnace disengaged from the freighter and fired it's maneuvering thrusters at full blast, rocketing away from the ship.

"Sir, incoming weapons fire! I'm reading 27 missiles. Acceleration is fast. Very fast! Two and a half minutes to impact."

"Damage potential?"

"I'm reading nuclear explosives, sir. It wont be pretty."

"Shit."

"Yes, sir. ETA is now 2 minutes, 15 seconds."

"Okay, signal the Fenris's, get them between us and the missiles."

"New signals, sir. Missiles heading towards the Fenris's as well."

"Shit"

"Yes, sir."

"Are the Mercury's okay?"

"Yes, sir. ETA is now two minutes."

"Okay, send the Mercury's to the front. Do they have enough time to get between us?"

"Yes, sir. (Mercury's are the fastest capital class ships in the Klonor fleet)"

"Excellent. Have them in front of the Fenris's. Once they're there use the Anti-Fighter Beams. Try to slice those missiles up before they get here."

"Sir? What about us? Our Beams can't hit targets that fast."

"Buff up the shields, transfer energy from the weapons to the engines, and then start to pray."

"Yes, sir."

With barely a minute and a half left the ships spring into action; thin Beams, almost like a scalpal when compared to the broadswords of the Heavy Beams, stabbing into space in an attempt to swat the missiles out of the sky.

The Leviathan, armed with the Heavy Beam Cannons that were so useless in this situation, just floated and took the blows.

It almost looked undamaged afterwards. Of course, then you noticed the gasses billowing out from engine compartments and the Laser Turrets blindly rotating in their sheathes. The Leviathan was an armored ship, very well armored, but an explosion reaching 810 megations will rattle anything.

"Status report!"

"Hull integrity is breached, but no vital areas. The engines are offline and the weapons are unpowered. We're out of it for a while."

"No matter. Signal the other ships, have them blow those bastards to hell.

The smallers vessels then moved to the attack, the Fenris's both unloading on the Imperious. Four Beam Cannons and 20 Laser Turrets pummeling the distant enemy.

The Mercury's dashed forward again, two each moving towards the Sultan's. 40 Laser Turrets targeted each Sultan, and in a second the Void of Space was filled with the flashes of weapons fire.

Each ship's sidewalls bent and degraded the incoming beams, weakening the power of what did penetrate through. Radiation and energy shields handled a bit more of that, and then the armored hulls of the battlecruisers dealt with what got through. Several outer hull compartments on all three vanished in melted hull plating and venting atmosphere. Several primary gravitic arrays vanished, followed by a secondary fire control station, a lidar array, and a few PD laser clusters. Two counter-missile tubes were knocked out on Brazen, and Centaur lost one of it's ninety centimeter laser mounts and a missile tube.

"Time to hyper translation?"
"Sixty seconds."
"Fire a last salvo, then roll ship. Tac, hit one of those damn Fenris cruisers with a kinetic strike."

A line of flashes lit the broadside of each ship as they hurled their missiles into space. This time, only twenty-five were meant for the Leviathan. Two of Brazen's missiles followed behind their sisters from the other two battlecruisers. Their programming was to use the preceding wave as cover from what point defense the Klonorian warships did mount, and then to smash into their target with every ounce of power their engines could generate.

Behind them, the battlecruisers rolled up behind their wedges, presenting their ventral bands to the enemy, and changing their course to disengage from the battle.

29-07-2004, 07:02
"Minor damage, sir. Without our heavy guns it'll take a while for the Fenris's and Mercury's to do any real damage."

"Time until we're running?"

"Under a minute, sir. Like I said before, nothing vital damaged."

"Excellent. Have the other ships continue the bombardment, then get us under way as soon as you can."

"Yes, sir............Sir! New launches! 25 missiles headed our way!"

"What, again? Okay, cut all power from the engines. Send it straight to the shields. That should keep us together."

"Yes, sir."

There is no visible difference, but the energy sheathing the Leviathan is suddenly doubled, then tripled, then quadrupled in strength. It might not be able to move itself, but it sure as hell wont be moved by anything else.

The other vessels, however, take a much simpler way out of the battle. They rotate in space, drop their shields, and hop to Sub-Space. A small hop, only a few million kilometers, but it puts them well out of range of the attacking vessels. They then rotate again, charge their weapons systems, and prepare to leap back. Their first hop had been random, no set destination. The return hop, which was aimed at a specific point near the battle zone, required precise calculations. With any luck, the pirates would have no clue where they'd went and be totally unprepared for their counter-strike.

"Generators charged Citizen Captain."
"Good. Take us into hyper."
The impeller wedges died and reconfigured themselves into two disks, perpendicular to the battlecruisers hull. The ships appearance seemed to stretch slightly, and they vanished into the Alpha layer of hyperspace, heading away from Gamma Draconis at thirty times lightspeed.

The trio of ships translated up into the higher bands of hyperspace, and journeyed for a few days, before dropping back down and translating back to normal space. It was a desolate system with nothing of value in it. Here they would repair their damages before proceeding to Regulus.

"Well........that was pointless. They jump in, hijack a shipment of pillows, shoot at us, then leave? Did they, or we, do anything here?"

"I don't think so, sir."

"Huh. I tell you, this is one screwed up world we live in. Anyway, are the repairs complete?"

"Yes, sir."

"Okay, get us back to the base. Transmit an Association wide alert, give the details of the raid and any info we have on the ships. Maybe the next time they show up we'll be better prepared."

"Done, sir."

"So............now what?"

"I don't know, sir."

"Want to catch a movie?"

"Sure."

The Leviathan disappears into Sub-Space, headed back to the Gamma Draconis military base for the finishing repairs and a brief shore leave.

Broad Beam Transmission: 2'nd, 3'rd, 5'th, and 6'th System Fleets
Transmission origin: ASMB Riviera, 4'th Fleet Headquarters, Gamma Draconis

All active vessels of the Klonor Space Corps, this is a Class 3 Alert. Three vessels, tentatively identified as belonging to the People's Republic of Vernii, are currently engaged in illegal pirating actions within the Associated Systems. They are to be regarded as a Class B threat and should be dealt with upon contact. The 4'th Fleet is on call should efforts to contain the threat fail, do not hesitate to request reinforcements should these pirates gain the upper hand.

Jorian Tovius and his military advisors sat in the dim of the conference room, watching a three-dimensional recording from one of the cloaked probes hidden somewhere in Gamma Draconis. The recording showed what had happened to the operatives sent to infiltrate the Associated Systems, of how they managed to escape the Valkyries only to fall prey to a nexus cannon from a much larger ship. After this, the hologram faded and the room lights returned to normal.

"They were unable to transmit any of the information they may have collected before they were destroyed," Admiral Varel stated, clasping her hands before her and placing them on the table.

"Were they identified?" asked Jorian.

"Unlikely," said General Korell. "The gunboats were stolen by a third party. As Rhinara does not possess that class of attack craft, there is no way they could have traced those vessels back to us. Aside from that, Klonor does not appear to be paying much attention to those gunboats anyway."

"But they are on alert," Jorian noted, reading over the reports coming out of that system. "Even if it was due to pirates. Can't blame them, though, Gamma Draconis being their main base of operations."

Korell leaned forward in his seat, tipping his head forward and casting pale shadows over his face. "I believe that we have not been compromised, and another tactic is called for."

Jorian nodded. "Agreed." He propped up an elbow with one hand and brought the other hand up to his face to rest his chin on. "Suggestions?"

General Avrek cursorily raised a single finger, "How 'bout we nab one of their officers and clone them? No one too high up in the ranks, mind you, someone high enough to be able to access the information we need, but not high enough to have every Klonor sensor network aimed at him for his protection."

Jorian looked over at the other advisors with a cocked eyebrow, indicating that he wanted their input on that.

"We will have to see if there are any other inherent security systems in place," said Varel. She looked over at Korell, "Do you have any intelligence on their sensory systems and personnel identification techniques?"

A nod from Korell. "They have some fancy equipment; ergometers, particle emitter detectors. But we can get around those. That's what we're good at, after all. Once that is accomplished, I can send a team to kidnap an isolated officer and run any necessary scans needed to make an exact duplicate."

"Write up a preliminary report," Jorian said as he scrolled through some brief highlights on Klonor from the mini-console on the conference table in front of him. "Meanwhile, have one of your men look into Ross128 and the Mahogany Duchy of House Ecaz."

The Antarellius, one of the Intelligence's Chameleon-class deep infiltration vessels, set course for the heart of Gamma Draconis after having installed a top-of-the-line cloning facility.

While standard Rhinaran cloaking technology was already difficult to nigh impossible to detect, Chameleons were equipped with stealth technologies far superior to anything else Rhinara had to offer. So much so that not even Rhinara had the technology to detect Chameleons under heavy cloak. This was what General Korell chose for this mission.

It entered warp under cloak, since while hyperspace would be faster, the power output required for hyperspace would have demanded that the cloak be dropped, which was not an option. Upon reaching the edges of the Gamma Draconis system, the Antarellius dropped out of warp and went to impulse. Passive scanning allowed a continuous flow of information coming in about what was going on in the system, as well as important knowledge on the sensor network in place so that the ship would know what, where, and when to avoid being spotted.

Thus the vessel moved through the system, keeping extraneous power output low and stealth high, to the planet where pickings for a kidnapping would be plenty.

And if Plan B failed? There was already a Plan C to be executed.

ASC Phobos, 1'st Klonor System Fleet, Gamma Draconis

The Phobos swam through space like a fish through water, it's engines glowing blue as they propelled it along its pre-planned route. System Patrols were always boring, but they were necessary so they were done. They might not be done with vigor and enthusiasm, but even lethargic patrols can find an enemy. As this one had just done.

The Massometer was a relatively simple device, a standard sensor system designed to analyse gravitic effects. A ship might be invisible, but it was still there and it still had mass. Therefore, it had gravity. It might not be much, but it was some; and when that gravity started making other objects move the way they shouldn't it made the Massometer take notice. Then the Massometer made a very loud beeping noise and the bridge crew took notice.

Ensign Gatt was on his first System Patrol and was finding it a lot less exciting than the thought it'd be. He'd expected finding pirates and rebels, glorious space combat that would awe people throughout the Associated Systems for years to come. Instead he was bored out of his mind and was wondering which fighter pilot he should put the moves on next. That one with the red hair was a pretty good looker.

Unfortunately, his plans for courtship were suddenly interrupted by a flashing light and a small siren.

Attention sensor station, there is a gravitic anomaly present. Probability of a cloaked ship is high. Recommend full alert.

"Oh bloody hell........Captain!"

Broad Beam Transmission

Attention cloaked vessel, this is Captain Rilos aboard the ASC Phobos. You have been detected. Lower your cloak and identify yourself at once. Failure to do so will result in immediate destruction. This is your only warning.

Lighting was dimmed on the bridge of the Antarellius as part of the power output minimization. Colonel Tollonis Khavara sat in her command chair at the center of the room, listening to the announcement from the Phobos with a frown on her face. "Threat assessment. And how did they detect us?" she demanded after only three words have been uttered by Rilos.

The tactical officer looked at his readings and quickly said, "The ACS Phobos, a Fenris-class cruiser, armed with laser turrets and beam cannons. Threat level four, direct confrontation is possible but not recommended."

"There was an internal announcement on the Phobos about a gravitic anomaly," said the intell traffic analysis officer. "Their massometer must have picked up on us."

Her eyes fixed upon the image of the Klonor ship on the viewscreen, Khavara asked, "Has our gravitational inhibitor malfunctioned?"

"It...seems...we missed something on our systems check," an engineering personnel said, nervously looking between his console and the colonel.

She shot him an icy glare.

"Yes, ma'am! It has," the engineer answered more conclusively. "I'll put a crew on it right away."

Khavara returned her attention to the screen. "Quickly, bring the phase cloak online. Unless they have surprises we are unaware of, their sensors and weapons will be useless."

OOC: Okay, how the heck would you have heard the announcement? Seriously, doing that defies the very laws of the Universe since sound does not travel through a vacuum. But then again we're also using ships with FTL and laser weapons. I think the laws of the Universe aren't enforced very strictly ;)

"Sir, we're no longer picking up their gravitic signature."

"Hmmmm, wily bastards aren't they? Turn on the Ergometers."

"Yes, sir."

Hyperatomics are a funny thing. They are used to transfer vessels into alternate dimesions for FTL travel, they are used to modify the atomic structure of ships to generate intense power, and, in very rare circumstances, they're used to hide vessels outside out of the phase of the the normal Universe. In any case they are easily detected with the right equipment.

"Sir, we have a fix on the ships location."

"Tag it with a Particle and keep on it. Once it drops back into Phase send it straight to Hades."

I assumed (hopefully correctly) that your ships weren't actively trying to hide these signals as mine would be. Therefore, with a bit of futuristic technology, one could pick up on these electrical signals. Now this would normally pick up on a whole mess of other signals too, but an intell traffic analysis officer would know what exactly to look for :) )

"Colonel, I'm detecting a foreign substance on the hull. Radioactive particle," the ops officer reported. "It appears we've been marked."

Khavar lifted her chin up slightly, looking imperiously at the viewscreen. "So they are able to find us even when we are phased. Impressive enough, I suppose. Can we remove the marker?"

"Negative. Not without a baryon sweep of the hull."

She hit a command on her armrest mini-console. "Send the information on the marker to my console."

"Yes, Colonel."

To the conn, Khavara coolly stated, "Bring us about, heading 133 mark 54, one-tenth impulse." To the science officer, "I want you to synthesize this molecule they used to mark us with. As much as you can and as fast as you can." To ops, "Prepare to leak some of our hydrogen stores. Since they like looking for us so much, I'm going to give them as much phased matter and radioactive particles as they can take. I want this entire system flooded with them." To the engineer, "ETA to complete repairs of the grav inhibitor?"

"Um...it...it'll be finished, should be, in another half hour."

The colonel gave him another cold stare.

Jorian stood out in the desert where a cloaked Rhinaran military base resided. Gathered around him were his military advisors and various other personnel. Floating in the sky a few hundred meters off the ground was a vessel that suddenly turned into a Deimos-class corvette that cast a large shadow over the group. The cloaking field hiding the base extended far enough to keep the fake corvette hidden from the outside world as well.

"We are capable of making an exact, holographic duplicate of most of the Klonor Space Corp ships," a scientist said excitedly. "And with the aid of a quantum singularity drive, some forcefields and false readings, etc., most sensor technologies could be fooled into believing that this is the real thing, as long as they don't get too close."

"Thank you, Doctor," Jorian said. He turned to Llorana Varel, "How many can we field immediately?"

With her usual, even voice, Admiral Varel said, "Of the six we have completed since production began at the start of the year, five of them can be activated right away."

"Good." Jorian looked at the rest of his advisors, "Let's go discuss how we can best use them."

"Well, they've made a lot of radioactive particles. No matter. Keep an ergometer lock on them."

The Captain pauses then, considering a possible new course of action.

"Belay that order. I'm done letting these cretins have a free pass throughout the whole system. Take a Harbinger Warhead, send it over there, and detonate it."

OOC: Unless I'm mistaken the intense radiation will either kill everybody aboard or at least destroy the Phase Cloak equipment.

Oh, just so you know, they'll instantly know that your things aren't Klonor ships. Besides the registry numbers and such, there's also the fact that there wont be any MiniStar Engines aboard. It'd be like trying to pass a diesel sub off for a nuclear sub. It might look like a nuclear sub, but any examination (even just listening to it) reveals that it's not. "Thank you, Mister Taris," Khavara said without looking at the man. "Is the Phobos still tracking us?"

The operations officer looked over the readings and said, "Yes, it appears they still have a sensor lock on us."

The colonel slowly took in a deep breath of air, and likewise expelled it back out. "Set course for the planet, full impulse. Be ready to slip into subspace on my command. Tactical, try to jam their sensors."

"Aye, searching for a way to disable their ergometer," the tactical officer replied.

(OOC: Okay, so not as complete a hoax. But if very far away, would it be enough as a "sensor ghost" to possibly have people at least consider it? As for the Harbinger...aww, I was starting to like this crew too ;) But that brings up the question of how radiation affects phased matter. Since radiation is the emission and transmission of subatomic particles, only those particles that are phased would affect phased matter. Otherwise, they ought to go right through a phased object just as a knife would.)

(OOC: Yes and no. Yes in that the concept is based off of Star Trek. No in that I didn't like how Star Trek did some of the stuff. For example, the way the phased people were able to run around the Enterprise? That's a big no. They can't interact with the phased world, so they can only run around on a similarly phased ship. Also, my rule is that phased people can't see unphased people, the same way unphased people can't see phased people, so the whole "Geordi peeking at the Romulan cloak" thing is impossible. With the right sensor technology, though, phased matter can detect unphased matter, and vice versa (which your ergometer does).)

(OOC: Hmm, I don't remember anyone interacting with radiation in that episode, but maybe my memory is bit hazy. I also tried looking up other sources of how radiation affected phased matter in that episode, but found none. Either way, though, the phase technology was sporadic in the episode, so I'm not basing my phase tech completely on it. For me, anything that's phased can affect phased matter. So if the radiation, which is subatomic matter, is phased, then yeah, it could do damage to the phased crew. Anything that isn't phased, can't.

Howabout things like gravity, that isn't matter and thus has no phased or unphased state? In this case, it'll affect phased and unphased matters the same way. So a phased ship stuck in the gravity well of a black hole is just as screwed as a normal ship is. Does that help any?)

"Nevermind about all that, blast it!" the mercenary spat at the comms personnel in the Mahogany Duchy who was unfortunate enough to be the one who answered his hail. "I've something important that your government would want to get its hands on...for a fee. Patch me to someone more useful than you are."

"I'm sorry, sir, but standard protocols-"

The man rolled his eyes and gritted his teeth. "For the last time, my bloody name is Richard Thomas. I'm an independent contractor for military services, and no, I'm not bloody registered. I don't have much time, so get me someone I can talk to. NOW."

With a sigh of surrender, the comms personnel said, "Please hold."

After a moment, another person appeared on the screen. Before he could say a word, though, Thomas said, "Finally! I thought that idiot forgot to transfer me or something. Look here, I managed to smuggle out a stolen data rod from someone who's planning to wipe all of you off the face of your planet. But I would need some compensation."

The person on the other end was about to say something when Thomas held up a hand, "Uh uh, don't you be worrying about authenticity. I'll stick around your little planet as long as needed for you to prove that it's the real thing. As long as you don't take so long that I'll be trapped here when you get attacked. I'm about to enter the Eridan System, let's say you and I - what the?" Thomas looked around frantically. "Bloody hell, how'd they sneak up on me like... Holy sh-bzzzzzt-" the signal turned to static for a few seconds before reestablishing. The cockpit of Thomas' ship was smoking, and another blast sent the ship rocking. "They bloody found me, those sons of -bzzzztt-"

And the signal was gone.

Any sensors that were aimed in that direction would have seen a Klonorian Prometheus-class interception cruiser blow up the smaller ship before moving off and disappearing into deep space.

Among the wreckage was a charred strongbox, inside of which was a data rod that, while a little banged up, managed to survive the explosion. The information held within was a Klonorian plan to reinvade the Eridan System. Not only that, but Star Realm Five Civilized Nations was next on the list. Other information included fairly recent Klonorian fleet movements and locations...possibly in preparation for the invasion? There were a few discrepencies in the data, a few missing pieces, but then that was to be expected from a rod that just survived an explosion, right?

"Good. Prepare the decoy ships. Have them start making sensor ghosts of Klonor ships at the edge of sensor range for the Mahogany Duchy and the Star Realm." A bishop flew diagonally across the path that the previous pawn just got out of the way of and settled on a rook.

Could it work? It might! But what if they unphase? Then we'll both be destroyed, and the system will remain secure. Yeah, but then I'll be dead. Well, that would suck, but it's a risk I need to take. The longer they're here the more risk we place on the entire Association. We have to do it.

Would that affect the ship even when phased? Khavara was uncertain. "Can we outrun it?"

The colonel maintained her steely composure. "We should not be affected. Maintain course and speed."

"Impact in three...two...one..."

Nothing happened.

"Harbinger bomb has detonated."

Whew. Khavara stood up and took a few steps forward, clasping her hands behind her. "ETA to the planet?"

"Change course. New heading, the shipyards. Let's keep they guessing."

"Yes, Colonel. Changing course. New bearing 67 mark 358."

"Any progress at jamming their sensors?"

The tactical officer shook his head, "Negative."

"Keep at it. I want them off our tail by the time we approach the planet."

"Aye aye, sir."

Nothing to do now but wait. After some time has elapsed, the ops officer said, "Sir, the Phobos is increasing speed."

The colonel's body remained motionless save for the swivel of the head so that she could look at the one who spoke. "Reason?"

"Unknown."

"Can we increase speed?" she asked.

"We are already at maximum impulse," the conn officer replied.

"How long before they catch up?"

The tactical officer checked his readings, "Five minutes, fifteen seconds. They had to distance themselves to fire the harbinger."

"What could they possibly be doing?" she asked aloud, mostly to herself. She did not spend much time pondering, and instead she said, "Keep an eye on them."

"I want a map of the system, on screen," Khavara said. The viewscreen blinked over to a representation of the solar system, marking the locations of planets, asteroids, Klonor vessels, cloaked Rhinaran probes watching system, and the Antarellius itself. "If we alter course for the asteroid field, can we reach it before they catch up to us?"

The officer at ops shook his head. "The Phobos will reach us a full minute before we can get to the edge of the field."

"Do so anyway," the colonel ordered. "It may take them more than a minute to attempt whatever it is they are attempting."

"Course change, new bearing 17 mark 58," said the person sitting at conn.

Khavar lifted her chin, using it to point towards the icon of one of the Rhinaran cloaked probes. "The probe that's trailing the Phobos, can we establish a tightbeam subspace transmission to it?"

"Aye," replied the tactical officer. "But the beam will come mighty close to the Klonor ship. It's possible, but risky."

"Coordinate with Communications," she said without taking her eyes off the viewscreen. "I want an update of our progress sent to it, and for it to get that information back to Central Command before the Phobos catches up to us."

"Aye, sir."

A couple of long minutes later, the comms officer said, "Transmission sent. A direct tightbeam message was successful. The Klonorian vessel did not intercept it."

"Well done, lieutenant," said Khavara.

"Colonel, the Phobos will make contact with us in thirty seconds."

"Let them come."

"Fifteen seconds...fourteen..."

"They're trying to occupy the same space as us? Evasive maneuvers!"

"Aye, evasive maneuvers!"

The Antarellius began twisting and turning, trying to get away from the larger vessel.

"The Phobos is still on us."

"...five...four..."

"Quickly, slip into subspace now!"

"Aye aye!" the tactical officer rapidly punched in the proper commands.

"...one...contact... They are continuing on their course and will completely envelope us in three...two..."

"Subspace ingression initiating!" announced the engineer.

The Antarellius began to slip into subspace like a submarine dives under the ocean, but then there was a flash of blue light and the ship shuddered as space rippled.

Had the Rhinarans initiated their subspace systems a fraction of a second sooner, or the Klonorians their Sub-Space just milliseconds before, things would have turned out quite differently. But as it happened, their timing was impeccable.

Unnatural shearing of time/space allowed the crew of the Antarellius to see themselves stretched out, but only as wraithlike projections of themselves. The ship rocked violently, and then it was gone.

Not in subspace.

Not in phased space.

Not in normal space.

Not in Sub-Space.

Simply gone.

"Go on."

"The probe lost all contact with the Antarellius shortly afterwards. The Antarellius is now twelve hours overdue for its next update."

"Destroyed?"
