How do you develop your nations IC history?

This is somthing that confuses me greatly. Some people set their nations in the 'real world'... Others in an 'alternate earth' of sorts. Other people just totally set their nations in non-exsistant planets and continents.

And after they've set the stage, they do all sorts of role-playing and whatnot...

How did you pick your 'location'? How do you develop your history? Do acts committed in rp's affect your history? Are theere any other ways you work on it?

Forgive me for the oddness of this post... I'm kinda sleepy...

A good way to get an RP history is the 1700s RPs, or others of that nature. As for location, like above, your imgaination.....

Hmm... Well, that makes sense. Although, what about the rps in which people say ther 'rule Libya' or have 'United the Ottoman Territories'... Do they actually have any rp legitimacy? Am I not allowed to calim those lands as my own?

Do I just cheat and say my nation is in a similar, but alternate, reality?

Because I was thinking that [maybe] my nation was a Crusader-State that somehow survived into the modern era...

you can set it however you like. many like the sort of alternate history approach, whereas I like the completely different reality approach. my nation is loosely based on a combination between Norway and Transylvania/Hungary

here's a history thread I'm currently involved in:

join in the fun if you want, or just read it to get ideas. whatever you like.

Start with a premise and go from there. Whatever suits your fancy.

Regarding RL territories and such, well its up to you whether you want to acknowledge them. Personally, I don't.

Nor do I recognize most real life companies, as RP'd on NS. I think people oughtta be more creative, and all too often the use of apparently helpless, obviously weak real life territories and corporations to expand your NS empire because you posted first in the "RL Nation Claims" thread is pointless wanking.

So really, I wouldn't worry about "RP legitimacy," everyone has a different idea on that, you'll find your own too.

Well, I just picked a theme that I'm most comfortable with and worked from there. The name MegaTokyo-3 is actually derived from the Tokyos from the shows Neon Genesis Evangelion and Bubblegum Crisis 2032; unsurprisingly, MegaTokyo-3's timeline takes place in the 2030s (although in RP terms it's about to go into the 2040s).
The location was fairly simple once I decided on my theme, capital, and timeline (Japan, or at least, a facsimile of the islands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Mutusuwan, and Shikoku).
And do RP events affect me? Considering that I lack the attention span to go on posting sprees and keep up with RPs that rapidly vanish off the front page if you aren't constantly posting and monitoring them, I don't RP... But it's still fun to waggle my big technology stick at nations that annoy me. :p

But anyway, the general thesis behind nation design (for RPs) is theme, theme, theme. Once you have a general idea of what you want to do, you can just make up the rest as you see fit. :)
