The First Ever Nationstates Soccer League (or at least in recent history)

Having recently taken part in an U21 Tournament, and noticing the abundancy of other tournaments, but a distinct lack of leagues, I have decided that it is high time for teams to be able to do their stuff over a prolonged period of time. It is time that, should a team lose embarrassingly to another, it should pick itself up, dust itself off and continue to fight. This is where the Nationstates Soccer League comes into play. It will provide a medium through which a nation can (in the metaphorical and physical sense) flex its muscles and show just how good they really are. It runs in the same manner as the group stages in soccer tournaments, but is over a longer period of time and covers far more games (usually over 300 in total).

This is my first time at trying something on as large a scale as this - we are talking a worldwide league, after all. I have, however, implemented a soccer league into my current region, East Pacific (NOT The East Pacific - there's a difference). Those of you who are in doubt as to the feasibility of this idea, can visit the region to see how it is done. There is usually at least one mention of the league and what's going on in it on the message board.

Those who are interested can reply to this thread, giving their details as follows:

1) Full Team Name (i.e. Maserrat Academicals)
2) Manager Name (i.e. Slobodan Gresko)
3) Stadium Name (i.e. The Custodian Bowl)
4) Player Details (in the form Position - Name - Age)

Please note that for number 4, you must have details of one goalkeeper, four defenders, four midfielders and two strikers.

I think that's about it for now. I'm looking for about 40 applicants, which will then be dwindled down to 20 through play off games, where the winners are invited to join the league, just so that I know I have teams capable of winning involved. Don't all rush to join at once - form an orderly queue, and remember, this is history in the making - be part of it!

We did have a Champions League. It ran for three and a half seasons.
Also, the majority of us who did that RP. And we take it seriously, with different hosts, scoring methods, RP bonuses to calculate scores. Can you match that? I'm sorry, but I really do not think this is a feasible idea, at least not now.

Well I'm sorry Mr. (or Mrs. but I'll assume the former) Experienced but it's obviously never going to be as good as some that have techincally superior equipment and funds put into them. However it is the only thing of its kind at the moment and so it will have to do. With regards to its feasibility, if it works in the East Pacific (not the The East Pacific) why should it not work here - it will follow exactly the same guidelines.

Oh, there was something I forgot to mention in the previous post. I will also need to know the style of play (from Defensive, Balanced or Attacking) and the aggressiveness (from Non-Aggressive, Balanced or Highly Aggressive) of your team. Obviously the more attacking you are, the more likely you are to score but, on the flip side, the more likely you are to concede. Similarly the more aggressive you are the fewer chances the opposing team has. Again, on the flip side you could have players sent off and you could give away penalties. It's entirely up to you nevertheless.

Okay,
1- is it at club level or international level?
2- how will you generate the scores?
3- I do not appreciate the remark made in that first sentence.

I'll answer those in a diferent order.

3) Yeah, sorry about that.

1) International level

2) It's fairly complicated, and I've not done theexact math yet, but here's a generalisation. During a match, a team gets a certain number of chances to score. The number of chances depends on several things: the style of play of the team, the style of play of the opposing team and the aggressiveness of the opposing team. On average a team will have about ten chances, but in extreme cases it could be as few as one and as many as eighteen. Anyway, once the number of chances has been decided, the match gets underway. A random number generator chooses a number between one and six. If the number generated is a six then the team who's chance it is is almost certain to score. However if the next randomly generated number is a one then somehow it is not a goal. Perhaps the keeper makes an incredible save, or the ball is ballooned over the bar. Any other number than a one, and a goal is scored. If the number generated is a five, the team who's chance it is receives an additional chance to score, either from a rebound off the bar, or off the keeper. The rules then apply as before. As I said before, aggressiveness also affects the number of chances of the opposing team. If you have high aggression, then a number generated randomly is the number of chances taken off of the opposing team. Low aggression means the same, but the chances are added instead of taken away. Balanced aggression adds or takes nothing. However after the game, numbers are geenrated to see the numbr of cards and/or penalties given. If you have low aggression the number of numbers drawn is 1, if balanced it is three and if high it is six. If the number drawn is 1, your players get off scot free. If it's a 2,3 or 4, then a player receives a yellow card. A 5 means a red card and a 6 means a penalty. For each penalty awarded a further number is drawn, and this denotes the outcome of the penalty. A 1 means the keeper saves the penalty, a 2 meas the penalty is missed and anything else means the penalty is scored. All in all this makes a match fairly random. It is completely fair to say that an aggressive attacking team is more likely to beat a non-aggressive defensive team, but you never know. Miracles may happen, just as Accrington Stanley may someday beat Manchester United (to which I would laugh). Overall this is a fairly basic simulation of a match, but it makes for thrilling games nonetheless. I told you it was complicated, now didn't I?

I hope this works if it gets off the ground.

Hey, if you like the concept, sign up for it. It's the only way this whole things going to get off the ground.

P.S. Too bad about the early exit from the U21 Championships, Jerusalem. We can wallow in our sadness together. Boo hoo, sniff!

There are like 50 leagues, if you look in the domestic soccer thread....

At least we made final twice but lost the first one. We'll be back like Arny :mp5:

Okay I think its time to start the preparations for this latest and newest league. Now, what shall I call it...? I know! How about the Nationstates Interregional League (or NIL)?

I think I might not bother with getting people to name the players in the team (although they can do it if they want). It makes no difference in the end, as I am assuming that all teams are of equal ability (at least for the first season anyway). I might just stick with team name, manager name and stadium name, just so that I can make the news reports a bit more realistic.

Methinks my original estimate of 40 entrants was a bit optimistic, so I think I 'll just work around what I get. I might send telegrams to nations who could possibly be interested.
