This is just one in a series of Posts in regards to the Nation of Fultonia and its history.

Fultonia's political structure is relitively simple.
The Chief Executive Officer is the President of the Republic. A person who must be at least 35 years of age and a natural born citizen of the Republic. A candidate must receive a majority of the vote or a runoff occurs among the top two vote getters.

The nation's legislature is set up into two bodies. The House of Representatives and the Senate.

The House is elected following the rules established by their homestate and each state is is given representation according to population. The Senate is elected proportionally among the parties recieving at least 3% of the vote to take seats.

The Judiciary is headed by a 15 member Supreme Court appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The Chief Justice being appointed every new presidential term.

The constitution has 12 amendments.

Fultonia has fought in 5 major wars and conflicts.

The War of Revolution

The first major conflict in fultonia's history, when the people of the colonies rebelled against the stifling oppression of the Empire's Tyranny. The empire had 6 major garrisons within Fultonia. 2 in each of the 3 provinces and 2 outposts on the Frontier. The conflict began when the colonists started to protest the forced conscription of boys and men into the empirial armed forces to fight against the continental menace. After two years riots began in several major cities ending in the death of 50 colonists. Demanding the formation of legislatures the Empire acquiesed and formed the three parliaments of Fultonia and established civil courts under thier jurisdiction. Becoming increasingly antagonistic over empirial taxes and the continued practice of forced conscription three months there after the parliaments formed the executive committee who promptly formed the Colonial Militia. Once word reached the Empiral king he disbanded the parliament and the militia.
Sending his forces into the streets hoping to strike fear into the colonists only backfired. Jester Adams, Prime Minister of Alko, led a band of militia men and citizens in battle against Mt. Mary Garrison surprising the commander who was promptly thrown in jail and his men being placed under arrest also. Jester and his men then commandeered the three naval vessals the Queen Mary, Nautilus, and King George sailing next to Alko Garrison destroying the anchored ships in harbor and forcing the surrender of the garrison to his forces who had made their way speedily south with the equipment and munitions from Mt. Mary.

The farmers and frontiers folk heard of the stunning success of their midisland neighbors and stormed the two frontier posts who were both unaware of the events unfolding to their east. Ft. Prosperity was burned to the ground along with all of the empirial forces. Ft. Alliance held out three days against the frontier forces until they surrendered due to an outbreak of diahrea among the men.

Meantime Jester Adams had split his force in three. 1,000 remaining to hold the garrisons and secure more recruits. With about 1,000 men heading toward the northern garrison of Anora, while he and 1,500 men went south to attack the northern garrison of Penn.

Lord Byron, Colonial Governor, saw the writing on the wall and had 4,000 of the 4,500 empirial force under his command lay down thier arms and be placed in prison. The 500 remaining were his personal guard who met with Prime Minister Waters and handed control of the garrisons to the colonial militia. In exchange Lord byron was made General of the Penn Militia and his men put in charge of building an official armed forces.

two weeks of marching and Jester Adams and his force arrived at Penn Garrison and met with John Waters and Lord Byron and sent word for Prime Minister Cook of Anora to be fetched to the site.

Meanwhile the colonial forces met in combat with 4,000 empirial forces in western Anora and were massacred the survivors being all hanged.

The Anora Militia did not succeed in its attack due to the fact that roughly a third of its members rebelled supporting the empirial forces. Only a small contingent around Prime minister cook were able to escape capture or death.

Militia forces led by Lord Byron trained during the rest of the fall and winter. At this time the Frontiersmen stockpiled food and water inside of the newly named Ft. Necessity setting up river blockades in both the northern and southern Disar River.

Empirial Forces deployed 10,000 troops who landed and secured the Province of Anora within two months. By Mid-December the Province of Anora was 90% pacified with only minor pockets of resistance. Alko and Penn were in the control of the newly formed Executive committee. Made up of the three Prime Ministers and various other elected officials of the provinces.

The war raged for 6 years. It was only after the Continental Menace bagan a blockade of the Empirial homeland did the King agree to sign The Republican Accord. The document giving all soveriegnty to the Republic of Fultonia and declaring the ties between the two severed.

GENERAL
The Fultonian Government represents, serves, and protects the Fultonian people at home and abroad.
The Fultonian Constitution establishes the basic structure of teh government. The nation is a federal system with power shared by the national and provincial governments. The constitution creates 3 seperate branches of government. The branches are represented by the Parliament, the President, and the Supreme Court.
PRINCIPLES OF FULTONIAN GOVERNMENT
The national government derives its authority from the provinces through the constitution. This document describes the structure of the governemnt and its goals.
According to the constitution the government's purpose is to, "ensure the longevity of the republic, create justice, defend the provinces from attack both without and within, and maintain the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity."
Three seperate branches share the powers of the government. In general the parliament makes the laws, the president enforces the laws, and the judicial branch interprets the laws.
A system of checks and balances keeps individual branches within thier constitutional limits.
The constitution ensures that branches remain seperate by forbidding members of parliament from simultaneously serving in the other two branches. In addition the same applies to to the executive and judicial branches. The only exception to this rule is the office of Vice President, who serves as President of the House of representatives.
Federalism is the division of power between national and provincial governments. Each state has its own government set up and constitution.
The Fultonian government relies upon the consent of both the provincial governments and thier people.
LEGISLATIVE BRANCH
Parliament creates, abolishes, and changes federal laws which govern the nation. Parliamentarians have a large say in public policy.
Parliament consists of two chambers - the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate being the chamber with greater power. The Senate has 200 members seated proportionally according to national party ID. Senators serve eight year terms. The House has 500 members who serve 2 year terms. Every province is represented within the house based upon population. Each territory of Fultonia is also guaranteed one representative.
Elections are held in the second week of July on even numbered years, swearing in takes place the following January the seventh day.
Making laws is the primary function of parliament. During each two year session of parliament over 10,000 bills are introduced with an average of only 300 being passed a year.
The Senate being the more powerful of the two branches must approve Judicial appointments and ministry positions. All bills regarding taxes must also originate in the Senate.
Parliament does much of its work through committees. The house has 22 Standing committees the Senate 20. When committees study bills they may call upon experts and other professionals. Committees wield immense power to determine floor approval of bills.
Party is an important part of the parliament. The members of each house elect the leaders of their party. Party leaders plan legislative strategy, communicate party goals, and encourage members to vote along party lines. In each house parties form coalitions to in an effort to gain chamber leadership and control over committees. Although the VP is President of the House it is the Speaker who has committee control. The Senate elects a Prime Minister who leads the Senate and controls committee assignments.
EXECUTIVE BRANCH
The Executive Branch carries out federal laws and creates regulations to help enforce such laws. The President is the head of the executive branch and in charge of its 16 ministries.
The Ministries of: Agriculture, Commerce, Defence, Education, Energy, Health, Urban Development, Interior, Justice, Labor, Foriegn Affairs, Revenue, Security, Transportation, Veterans Affairs, Treasury
Presidents of Fultonia are elected to four year terms. The people of Fultonia vote for President and if no candidate recieves a majority there is a runoff within 1 week between the top two candidates.
The President has many functions. As chief executive the President enforces federal law, prepares a budget, and appoints high ranking officials. As commander in chief the President directs foriegn and national security. As chief diplomat the president directs treaty negotiations. As legislative leader the president may veto bills passed by Parliament.
JUDICIAL BRANCH
The Judicial branch interprets the nation's laws. It is made up of a system of federal courts and judgeships. The Supreme Court of Fultonia is the highest court in the land.
Federal courts handle disputes among citizens involving the constitution or Fultonian law. The courts most important power is that of judicial review, the authority to overturn laws they deem unconstitutional. Any Fultonian federal court may overturn laws or declare acts of the Fultonian government illegal if they are unconstitutional. The Supreme Court is the final authority on such matters.
The Supreme Court is in charge of creating lower federal courts. Today both trial and apellate copurts exist.
District courts are trial courts that have general federal jurisdiction. There are 90 district courts. Court of Appeals are apellate courts that review district courts on matters of law. A court of appeals may change a district courts ruling if they deem that it was unfounded or incorrect. Fultonai has 11 apellate courts.
The Supreme Court, the nation's highest court, reviews appeals from the apellate courts and the highest court in each province. The Supreme Court has one Cheif Justice and 14 associate justices. At least 10 justices hear and decide a case by majority vote. In an event of a tie the previous ruling stands.
The President appoints all federal judges with the approval of the senate. Judges are appointed for life but may be removed from office for corruption or other crimes as deemed fit by the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Fultonia has five major political parties which always win seats in Parliament.

In alphabetical order:
Conservative Party- This party supports a decrease in federal spending on social welfare programs and an increased concern over state rights. They support business interests, a strong prepared military, and tougher crack downs on crime especially drug related.

Liberal Party- This party supports an increase in federal spending on education and medical programs as well as firmly establishing a woman's right to choose. They support environmental regulation and espouse greater civil liberties and federal rights.

Libertarian Coalition- This Coalition supports greater choice in all political arenas. Lower taxes for all Fultonian's and more deregulation of public monopolies like public schools and electric companies. They are staunch opponents of Gun Control and support the legalization of marijauna.

Progressive Alliance- This Alliance wishes to seperate church from state in fultonian politics and support gay, and polygamous marriages. They favour gas taxes and wealth redistribution as well.

Traditionalist Faction- This Faction wants to establish a national religion and directly opposes abortion rights, gay marriage, and wants to bring back public executions along with dilineated class structure.

President Jefferson- Born in Alko City, Alko in a middle class family with two working perants. A lackluster student who dropped seminary school to marry his wife. He the received his B.A. in English Studies with a minor in Spanish Culture. He then went on to recieve his law degree from the prestigious Yorvord University. He then served as a Trial lawyer for 16 years before being elected to Alkonian Senate. After only serving 4 of his 6 year term he was elected to the House of Representatives. He was swiftly catipulted into the Speakership where he remained until the Fultonian Civil War broke out. Both the President and Vice-President dying in the same plane crash he was sworn in as Acting President. Using strong negotiation tactics he was able to restore order and quickly restored the Fultonain military to its prewar magnificence. Serving out the remaining two years he won reelection in his own right with an amazing 51% of the vote. The first President to win election on the first ballot in 60 years. Two years into his first full term he defended the Republic against The Evil Hodgeanian Empire, and with the help of Allies liberated two of its provinces. His shrewd negotiations helped rebuild the Republic and help the people of Aubania and Coastal City create democracy. With many in his party calling for the creation of a monarchy or President for life he instead brought the libertarians into his party's coalition and helped pass a constitutional amendment allowing the President to serve an unlimited number of terms. With the next election only a year away he has yet to announce his palns to run for the Presidency again.
Vice President Bottom- Bottom was raised in a one family home and was a lackluster student graduating at the bottom of his small highschool class. Known as a drinker and a hellraiser in Anglefold, Providence he joined the military at age 20 to escape trouble with the law. He served honorably for 6 years before being assigned to --- classified for reasons of national security --- after serving 6 years in this capacity he went to Providence State College where he recieved his B.S. in Chemistry with honors. He then went on to recieve his doctorate in Medical Ethics from Haley University in Anora. Shortly there after Fultonian Civil War broke out and he reenlisted being placed at the rank of Corporal inside of the Army Judicial Corp. He was in charge of Prisoner Treatment and Civilian Humanitarian Aid. Within the year he was installed as the Chief Information Resources Gathering Officer of Southern Anora Internment Displacements. Once the war ended he was accepted into the Fultonian Diplomatic Corp and appointed as Assistant Associate Secretary to Associate Vice Chairman Moyers. He served in an exemplary fashion garnering two top class medals. During the chaos of Hodgeanian War of Aggression he was tapped to hold the negotiations on Iansisle and was able to break the deal that liberated the Provinces of Coastal City and Aubania and gave the remaining 80% of Hodgeania to Imitora. Coming home a hero he accepted the invitation of President Jefferson to assume the Vice-Presidency and was a key negotiator in forming the current Republican Coalition.

Prime Minister Donaldson- Prime Minister Donaldson was born in Utal, Calco to two loving perants who taught elementary school in the large religiously charged city. He recieved high marks all throughout highschool and was the captain of his highschool basketball team the Red Rockets. He went to college on a basketball scholarship where he led his team, the Cats, to a province championship. After five years he recieved his B.A. in Educational Studies. He played for a brief two years in the Fultonian Basketball Association before a back injury ended his career. Donaldson taught highschool ball for ten years before getting involved in politics. He was elected to his local school board where he served for six years. Donaldson then ran for City Council of Utal and defeated his highly popular Traditionalist opponent. He served for 12 years before being defeated by a Traditionalist candidate. Not taking any time off he campaigned hard for the Conservatives being rewarded with a Senate Seat serving 3 years. During the Fultonian Civil War he quickly emerged as leader of his party in the Senate and took the reigns of power from the party establishment. He was one of the few leaders to survive the attack launched by the Hodgeanian Aggressors and has rebuilt his party, and with the help of President Jefferson has created a solid national base of power.
Speaker Samuels- Samuels was born into the prestigious Samuels steel family through his father and into the Williams bank family on his mother's side. He recieved perfect marks throughout his school career twice recieving the coveted Fultonia Scholar Award. He attended the Adam's School of Business recieving his B.S. in Accounting in only three years. Transferring to Yorvord he recieved his masters in economics in only one year. Samuels then took two years off to serve in the Fultonian Citizen Corp. After finishing his tour of service he attended Haley where he recieved his Jurist Doctorate in two years. Samuels then began operating a small accounting firm working for some of Fultonia's wealthiest individuals. He worked in this post until the breakout of the Fultonian Civil War three years out. During the war he was a major lender to the government and used his large influence in the immense rebuilding efforts that took place after. During the last election cycle he ran and won as an independent representing the people of Penn in the House of Representatives. Being one of the few Representatives to survive the Hodgeanian attack he convinced the Libertarians to create a new coalition with the conservatives and was nominated to be leader of their party. He is seen as a rising star in Fultonian politics.

Chief Justice Browning- Edward Browning

Penn- is the leading manufacturing and industrial center of Fultonia. Adelphia is the provinces capital with Hershey and Phillipsburg being its first and third largest cities. Penn's chief manufacturing activities include the production of chemicals, machinery, and electrical equipment. Service industries include shipping, education, and computer services. Mines in the western part of the state produce granite, silver, and huge deposits of coal. Penn is made up of hills, plateaus, ridges and valleys. Penn is nicknamed the Keystone state, as it was at the center of the formation of the Republic.
Anora- is the leading center of banking, communication, and finance in Fultonia. Its greatest asset is the city of Anora itself. The capital of Fultonia and the largest city in Fultonia. It has large numbers of theatres, museums, and cultural centers. Anora has a large shipping business and manufacturing sector as well. In the harbor of Anora stands the Emblazoned Eagle, the symbol of the Republic to the masses. The other large cities of Anora are Bania, York, Kingston, Pugskeep, and Byron. The states nickname is the Empire State as it was the most supportive of the Empire during the Revolution.
Alko- is a major fuel and food producing province of Fultonia. Thousands of oil and natural gas wells dot the western landscape of Alko. Millions of white faced beef cattle graze on the flat plains and rolling hills of Anora. Fertile fields produce vasts amounts of wheat and corn. The state is also and important industrial, distribution, and aerospace province. Alko's capital is Alko City and other major cities include Morrison and Utherie. Its nickname is the Turner state which refers to the fact that it turned from the empirial to the Republican Cause during the revolution.
Nev- is a small province that exhibits a populist libertarian attitude in nearly all fields. Gambling and corporate interests are almost completely unregulated making this a popular tourist stop for Fultonian from all over. Vega is the capital and Renus is the second largest city. Nev is a land of rugged snow capped mountains, grasy valleys, and sandy deserts. Nev also raises many crops the largest being wheat and potatoes. The states nickname the Mineral State stems from the fact that gold, silver, gravel, natural gas, and daimonds are mined across the province.
Calco- is a state that holds more people than any other province of Fultonia. More goods and products are produced in Calco than any other province within the Republic. Factories produce computer and electronic equipment across the state as thousands of barrels of oil are pumped and shipped to the rest of Fultonia. The capital of Calco is Menos and the next largest cities Angelwood, Frisco, Central Valley, and Washwood. The provinces nickname of the Watchtower State has been shifting recently to the Brain Trust as computer and biolab firms center around huge public universities funded by the province for research and development.
Providence- is the second largest state in the republic in regards to population and the largest in land size. Individualist rugged attitudes have always been the symbol of Providence. Providence has great trade and finance industries that benefits from huge agricultural and mining productions. The provinces leading economic activities are manufacturing, socail, and personal services. Vast plains with rolling hills and provide fertile soil and rich grasslands. Providence has more farmland than any other province leading the way in wool production. Providence is called the Loner state as it was an independent nation until the War Between the States.

The various commands are unified in the joint command center housed in the Aerospace Divisional Building in Providence.

The Naval and Air Force units are completely seperate. Therefore The Fultonian Air Force is rather small compared to other nations, but it's Naval Air Force more than makes up for it in size.

The Bloodless War was not actually a bloodless war. The war happened in three stages over three years.

First Stage
The National Government was taking forced conscriptions and taxing the western territories on thier products as they traveled across the Snake River. This enraged the frontiersmen as they had fought for independence with the provicnes. In retaliation they declared independence from the Republic. The national government actually accepted thier independence as resources were being sapped in the east.

Second Stage
The new nation of Providence then began a sustained and systematic slaughter of the native peoples within a year of independence. The Republic began putting pressure on the nation and blocked trade in an effort to stop the slaughter. Providence then bagan claimed ownership of the Snake River setting up blockades unless high tariffs were paid.

Third Stage
The second year of the native slaughter and the third year of the conflict the Republic began to respond by putting naval units on the snake river and busting up the Providential blockades. They then marched troops straight into the nation and over took thier parliament while in session. They hanged the Prime Minister and the Fultonian President appointed a new one.

At this point the war was effectively over, albeit random attacks did occur till shortly after the province was granted admission into the Republic.

The War of Hodgeanian Aggression was one in which a psychotic dictatorship devestated the peaceful republic and its people.

Every major city was attacked and nearly every major military installation as well. Only after four years of heavy rebuilding with steady defence spending has the nation been able to rebuild to its glory.

The war was fought by naval forces and longe range missiles. A counter strike liberated coastal city, however the forces were almost completely repelled with only a few chaplains rescued by our Imitora Allies escaping execution.

With the help of Imitora and Iansisle Hodgeania became a bankrupt nation. With Coastal City stabilized and the state of Aubania handed over as well, President Jefferson appointed military governors to head the nations. The two have since become incorporated territories who will during the next election be given the right of self determination. The other 80% of Hodgeania was given over to the control of Imitora. On a side note Coastal city and Aubania are seperated from the rest of former Hodgeania by huge towering walls with only two checkpoints.

The Grand Republic of Fultonia has throughout its history been defined by its religion. Nearly all of its Chief Executives being Roman Catholic the few exceptions being Fultonian Orthodox. The nation has always been deeply religious the church state line being blurred by those in office. That being said the nation has been led by Liberals and left leaning parties almost exclusively since its inception as a nation. This has led to an interesting dynamic. A nation that until recently prided itself on Universal healthcare, state run education, massive welfare roles, and 60% government ownership of corporations. While on the other hand illegalizing abortions, maintaining mandatory prayer in schools, banning church taxes, and forbidding homosexual, ployamory or polygamous relationships, and even divorce without church anullment. Interesting dynamic still exist within Fultonia. There has still never been a protestant or other religiously affiliated President. The once powerful pro-protestant Traditionalist Party is nearly extinct and the libertarian party has replaced it as party of toleration regardless of issue. Yet both are part of a new coalition that is made up of mostly Fultonian Orthodox and Economically Conservative (or liberal depending on what side of the pond you're on) Catholics.
