Misreading a country's population

On two different occasions, people I've begun or was in the midst of a RP with have told me that they were surprised when they saw my country's population. In both cases, the people involved said they thought I was a billion-plus population country. One said someone (though I don't know WHO) TOLD him I was billion-plus and he believed it and another said he checked it out as we were in the middle of a development RP.

In the first case, I had not yet cleared 500 million and in the second case, I had not yet hit 600 million. That's what fascinates me about this. It's not like I'm at 997 million or anything. As I write this, I have not yet hit 650 million.

I usually check a country's population before I begin a RP to get an idea of how to approach them (if they're a much larger country, I'll try diplomatic pressures only... I like diplomacy for the most part anyway, but I'll need to know if I could conceivably use military force if it became necessary). What could I be doing that makes people think I'm billion-plus?

Edited to add: This can be welcome to general suggestions as well as specific feedback.

If I plan on taking on a nation I try to read their nation description, and look through their old threads to see what I'm up against. It leaves me more prepared to take them on, and allows me to think up scenes for the RP in advance, improving the quality of my posts, rather than if I just pulled posts out of my ass as I went along.

Thanks for your input, but I was wondering what leads someone to think my country is a 1 billion-plus country when it's really a lot smaller?

Thanks for that "response."

Probably just put off by your high post number I'd say... Anyone who even just looks at your join by date should notice that you haven't been here long enough to be a billion nation(unless you've been resurrected of course, but that's rare).

That makes sense to an extent. I found I'd look at join dates to get an idea of what I'm dealing with, but even then, if I'm seriously going to get involved with a RP, I go check the country's page out first before I come back with my RP.

I'd rather not 1) try to bully a country I think is tiny and find out I'm pissing off a giant (which I normally don't anyway) or 2) act like a country's going to wipe me off the face of the Earth and find out they're a lot smaller.

The thing that put the question in my head was that a country acted as if I was going to destroy his army before checking my population and finding out I was smaller than he was. This was where the other person told him I was billion-plus and he believed it.

It doesn't ring a bell with me, but it is mildly possible that your name sounds similar to another nation that they could be confusing you with...

I too have entered into several RP's where I had to point out the size of my nation. I always check, but other nations don't...............though they should. I DO have 1 billion + and have had 300 million + nations engage me in hostilities and well into it when they say 'Your nation isn't big enough to (insert-field that many tanks, have that large a tax base, have that big of a navy, have that large of a consumerbase.......etc.)' and everytime I have to point out my nations size, and they are always shocked.

Wait, isn't your nation size close to 3 billion?

The problem is that when most people look at your nation's founding date, they see the month and not the year. So people in Jan. of this year were looking at me and calling me a "n00b." Then I showed them that I was Jan 2003, not Jan 2004, and they shut up. Maybe they're doing this with you, but the other way around.

I think if I get anyone else who thinks I'm a billion-plus country (or a two billion plus country when I hit the billion mark), I'll just say, "I get that a lot." LOL

Oh dear... People can't really mistake the 2002 or 2003 nations for newbs or n00bs, unless of course if its Artitsa or Whittier, but a lot of people are really messing up with the 2004 nations...

I wonder what it is about 2004 nations... maybe a lot more of us out there? Or maybe just getting some good RPers in the class of '04?

I'm relativly young, but I never considered myself to be a n00b (even when I was). I always looked down on people that stupid. There are some good RPers among us, but there are also a lot of n00bs. I would call myself a good one, but I haven't really been in anything long lasting.
