"... and the Basket Weaving industry is soon set to cut some 1000 jobs in the autumn."
The newsman; a slightly thin and pale-skinned 47 year old reshuffled his papers after reading the headlines and sipped water from a glass that rested on his desk. He cleared his throat and began again...
"And now for the latest news on the General Election here in Miloz.
Three political parties have announced candidacy in the election for the Presidential post. Now to Gloria Stockington, our senior political analyst, presenting a special report for the benefit of the voters.
Gloria; a short, stocky and rosy cheeked 22 year old held a trigger that controlled a slideshow of images that she could commentate on. She began speaking.
"The first party I will speak of is the Liberal Party which currently holds power. Its leader, President Anthony Williams advocates a continuance of current government policy. He insists on a continuation of school reform away from faith, a fairly free and open dialogue with foriegn nations and an economy based on opportunity and free trade. He plans to introduce legislation next year that would legalise homosexual marriage and certain recreational drugs."
As she had spoken, her fingers had clicked the trigger and images of Liberal party symbolism combined with a simple bullet-point outline of the policies were projected to the television audience. No doubt she intended to implement the same technique for the other parties she would describe.
"The second party, the party with the largest minority in parliament is the Conservative Coalition. An alliance of religeous politicians, hawks and big business interests. Led by religeous scholar Mark Henry, they consistently oppose the proposed legislation on homosexual marriage and the legalisation of recreational drugs. They advocate a foriegn policy of strength and support legislation reducing environmental controls. They also plan to introduce 'morality' laws and increase the power of the Catholic church.
The next series of images moved into play.
"The third party, the Socialist Democratic Alliance led by Catherine Temple plan to make an enormous election leap this year. They support a controlled and regulated economy and plan be more isolated and reserved in foriegn relations. They support homosexual marriage but they condemn the legalisation of recreational drugs that might cause dependance on others who as the party leader said 'seek to control, exploit and oppress their fellow citizens'. That concludes are simplistic segment outlining the election.
The news anchor began speaking again.
"We will offer further electoral coverage with questions directed to the party leaders over the next few days.
