Fresh off a surprising third place finish in the AOCAF tournament, Bryan Marshall, the coach of Sarzonia's national team announced the roster for the team's Baptism of Fire Cup appearance before the team makes its World Cup debut.

Sarzonia Stars
Coach: Bryan Marshall. Assistants: Dave Wilson; Barry Owens

ROSTER (starters in bold)
GOALKEEPERS
30 Troy Perkins (Portland): Perkins is still young (23), but started all five matches for the Stars in the first AOCAF tournament. He also has a SFC Cup trophy to his credit.
1 Kerry Tanner (Portsmouth): Now 34, Tanner brings a veteran presence to the team. He can take over in a pinch if Perkins can't go.

DEFENDERS
2 Mike Coyle (Woodstock): Left back in the Wild's 4-4-2 alignment. Speedy defender who can make up for occasional lapses in positioning with sheer athleticism. Now 22, still learning positioning.
5 Bryson Juergens (Portland): Plays left fullback for the Timbers but will play sweeper for the national side. Slow, but experienced. At 36, his best days may be be behind him.
14 William Jackson (Townshend): Steady right back helped bring pride back to the war-torn city of Townshend. 30 years old.
18 Taylor Williams (Rochester): Plays right halfback for the Rage. He earned a spot in the starting 11 with all-star caliber season. Not much pure speed, but tremendous quickness and great smarts. (29 years old)
32 Emacio (Ravenna): Known as a tremendous offensive defender, joined Ravenna in the SFC and helped lead the first year team to the playoffs. (22 years old)
34 Antonio Bresco (Burlington Braves - minor league): Can play defender or midfielder. Led the league in minutes played by bench player. Could start even for most SFC teams, but tires out easily after 65 minutes. At 34 years old, his stamina may be getting worse.

MIDFIELDERS
6 Jeff Conley (Woodstock): Also plays defensive midfield for the Wild. Renowned throughtout the league for shutting down the league's best attacking midfielders and withdrawn forwards. Aggressive streak sometimes results in cautions and sendoffs. 35 years old but in the best shape of his career.
9 Darwin Russell: (Nicksia): Tremendous left-side player with a deadly accurate free kick from that side. Can be roughed up and taken out of his game. At 24 years old, still has potential.
10 Bobby Convey: (Woodstock): Team captain. Easily the best playmaker in all of Sarzonia. Very experienced. Able to relate to all his teammates well. Frightening maturity at 22.
16 John Benmont (Portsmouth): Rugged midfielder adds great danger on right flank with accurate, pacey free kicks. Above average speed. 27 years old.
21 Martin Overton (Richmond): Plays defensive midfield for Richmond, but can also join the attack in a pinch. Has played withdrawn forward at times when the club team was hit by injuries or suspensions. 28 years old.
17 George Mitcham (Saugerties): Plays attacking midfield for the expansion Snakes, though he's better suited on the flanks. At 24 years old, may flourish with a new club.

FORWARDS
13 Anton Gregor (Daurmont, Isselmere-Nieland): Withdrawn forward who doesn't see much playing time on the capital city's best side. However, played key role in third place finish for Sarzonia in the last tournament. At 26 years old, the sky's the limit.
22 Brian Wilson (Woodstock): At 20, the youngest player on the team, but has terrific skills for his age and great football awareness. His father is the national team's top assistant coach, so he often thinks like a coach on the pitch. Also played a key role in Sarzonia's last AOCAF tournament.
31 Barry Alphonso (New Daurmont): Can play either withdrawn forward or striker for his club team. Led the league with 19 goals last season. Set records for most goals in Joe Gibbs University's history as a four year starter. 25 years old.

Coach Bryan Marshall surveyed the scene from the training facility in Vilita as the Stars finished up a practice session. He walked away muttering to himself.

"This has to be the worst practice session since before the AOCAF tournament began," he told assistant coach Barry Owens. Owens grimaced. He played on that first Stars team and he remembered how disorganized everyone was.

Assistant coach Dave Wilson finished the drills and gathered the team around. He knew Marshall long enough to know why he walked off and he knew Marshall trusted him enough to run things without him if need be.

"Men, that was absolutely unacceptable," he began. "If we're going to win this tournament, we're going to have to do much better than that."

His son Brian spoke up.

"I understand your concerns Coach," he began. The players looked at him in stunned silence because they expected him to call the coach "Dad."

"However," Brian continued, "we're waiting for our opportunity to play against people other than ourselves. I think our training will be a lot more spirited when we're in the midst of competition."

"You know me Wilson," Dave replied. The players looked around in surprise. He usually called his son Bri, but things definitely were different. "I believe you practice like you play. We can't afford to be lax or we end up going home before the postcard arrives."

Coach Marshall came out after his consultation with assistant coach Owens.

"By now, you should know the system we're going to be playing," Marshall said. "You should be more familiar with each other than you were the first time we got this team together.

"I've arranged a friendly against the Woodstock Wild," Marshall said. "They just won their third cup in the last four years." The Portland Timbers players growled. The Wild had beaten them each time in spite of Portland's dominance of the league's regular season table all four years.

"And, if a single Portland player gets caught making a dirty tackle, he's off the team," Marshall cautioned, catching the glances of all the Portland players, including young goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

Participating in their first ever international football tournament, the Spurland Football Association (SFI) have announced the following team to to carry the hopes of the nation in the Baptism of Fire Cup (see below).

The majority of the players are part of the nations reigning domestic champions, Tothampton FC.

The team appear to be confident if the statement by Manager Sid Morzaria is anything to go by, "We will win, no doubt about it. Well, atleast come in second."

The team like to play a defensive 4-4-2, with manager selecting no attacking midfielder in the team at all. The team has a good mix of yound and old, hopefully they will be able to use that to their advantage.

SPURLAND ROSTER:
MANAGER: Sid Morzaria
ASSISTANTS: Jack Black, Steven Brown

GOALKEEPERS
1. Bryan Robinson (28 - Tothampton FC): First Choice kepper at his club for over 6 years, has been instrumental in the clubs success. Very Agile and is known for his bravery.
13. Jack Teller (34 - Clochester Wanderers): Usually safe, but tends to drop off towards the end of games.
16. Robbie Hutch (23 - Blythe FC): Wears a cap. All the time. Besideds that, a handy keeper to have in reserve for any team.

DEFENDERS
2. Theo Buss (27 - Tothampton FC): Left Back at his club and is often seen charging down the left wing and knocking in crosses with some precision.
3. Paul Kelly (19 - Tothampton FC): Young central defendar, very ambitious, has shown signs of developing into a good prospect for the future. His only weakness is giving away freekicks just outside the area.
4. William Prince (23 - Bromley): Just recently recovered from an ankle injury but has passed a fitness test to be included in the squad. Always willing to give it his all.
5. Paul Campbell (34 - Accrington): Aging Right Back but still with a lot of quality.
12. Daniel Brown (25 - Tothampton FC): Versitile player, can play in a number of positions at the back. He gives 100% in every game, but his ability isn't as good as his effort. Good cover for the defence.
14. Kevin Atkinson (27 - Clochester Wanderers): Right back. He has shown signs of being a decent player, but he's not brave enough to actually show us what he can do. At times last season, he wouldn't move with the ball for fear of messing up again. Only available cover for Campbell.
20. Howard Becker (29 - Tothampton FC): Average player at Left back, not in his clubs first team and is not expect to play unless injuries take its toll on the team.
22. Thorston Willhelmson (18 - Cowdenbeath): Good player will lots of talent and time on his hands. Will be one for the future. Player either Center or Left at the back.

MIDFIELDERS
6. Jack Davis (29 - Osset Town): Left Midfielder whols played in that position all his career. Can run for 120 mins, always the first one on the pitch.
7. Martin Ricketts (23 - Tothampton FC): Central Midfiender, hasnt yet quite reached his prime but a good player none the less. Wins all headers that come his way.
8. Jackson (26 - Tothampton FC): Another one of Tothampton FCs Central Midfielders, always charges up the pitch, goes for every 50-50 ball. Probably the most commited member of the squad. Mostly known for his lack of last name, when asked about it he says, "How am I supposed to know?".
9. Peter Mannes (29 - Accrington): This Right sided Midfielders can carry the whole team on his shoulders, superb passing ability, positioning and is the national teams captain. Been at his current club all his career despite a number of offers from more successful ones.
15. Ron Davies (35 - Witton): Oldest member of the team, announced his retirement at the end of next season. Still has signs of the Davies of old. Prefers playing in the center.
17. John Lewis (24 - ?Currently Without A Club?): Right Midfielder with great speed. Unfortunatly without the talent to match it. Average player with average ball skill, and acts like it on the pitch. Not expect to start a single game, but only made the team bacause of injuries.
18. Terry Motson (22 - Weymouth United): No one really knows what his best position is. But what is known is that he has quality and can score the odd goal.
21. John Blue (30 - Weymouth United): Hardly played last season, only reason he is in the team could be because he is a known friend of the manager. Plays on the Left side of midfield.

FORWARDS
10. Robert Yeats (26 - Tothampton FC): He is without a doubt our most consistent player and has saved the team many times in the past. Part of the backbone.
11. Alaau Morris(22 - Cowdenbeath): Always ends up scoring. He is more out-and-out than Yeats, which makes for a nice little partnership. He's a bit short though.
19. Dean Morris - (17 - Cowdenbeath): Started with his brother Alaau at their club Cowdenbeath last season. He had good first season and was rewarded with a call up. Easily the youngest member of the squad, not expected to start, but a good back-up.
23. Jonnie Hammond (20 - Weymouth United): Laegely inexperienced. Only managed to break into the first team of his club in the latter half of last season scoring just under a goal a game.

Sarzonia .. 3 - 0 .. The Water Cooler

Stars Burn The Water Cooler 3-0

Obviously, the motivational ploy worked.

After a lackluster practice session, Sarzonia's national team coach Bryan Marshall had his side play the three time defending SFC champion Woodstock Wild in a friendly before the Baptism of Fire Cup debut. The Sarzonians then looked sharp in a 3-0 rout of the Water Cooler.

Forward Brian Wilson scored two goals and fellow forward Anton Gregor added one from the penalty spot after a cynical challenge from a Water Cooler defender in the box.

"This was the best match we've played of the six international matches we've played thus far," Marshall said. "Our defense was as solid as I've seen it and Willsie was real sharp.

"[Goalkeeper Troy] Perkins was awesome out there. You saw why he's our starter."

Perkins made five saves including a diving stop of a bending free kick in the 19th minute to earn the first clean sheet in Sarzonian national team history.

"The defense made things easy for me," Perkins said. He noted that the 19th minute save was the only difficult chance he faced the whole match and most of the 13 shots on goal were well wide of the mark.

"We can't let up from here," Wilson said. "It's great to get a tournament off to a strong start, but there are a lot more matches to go. We want to be able to play for a cup title and this is just the first step in a long journey."

"I guess Willsie was right, huh?" Assistant Coach Dave Wilson, Brian's father said. The coach and his son disagreed about the concerns over the flat practice before the tournament.

"It seems that when we play the matches that count, we are able to turn things up a notch," Dave Wilson said. "As a player, Bri probably has a better sense of the team than I do as a coach."

"If I were concerned about our ability to focus, I probably would have said something," Wilson said.

"For a guy who's not a team captain and who's the youngest player on the team, he has the respect of everyone in that locker room," team captain Bobby Convey said. "If he said 'pick it up,' the guys would do it."

Bribery Results In 0-0 Draw!
VILITA - What would have been a controversial 1-0 win for Spurland became a 0-0 draw after HypercapitaliZm made a CH§1 investment in Abysmali referee Afsdh Bafhi...er...Bioga Wfxla...er...we can't tell what his name is, it was written by a Lovisan. The §1 bribe was enough to convince the ref to overrule the goal and become the richest person in Abysmalistan. When coach Bob HZSF (HypercapitaliZm Soccer Federation) was interviewed after the game, he assured reporters that the team would use their experience to capitalize, not communize, on their scoring opportunities. Communizts Anonymous is already filing charges against Bob for his use of the word 'communize', but nobody knows if CA will have a large enough net worth to win the case.

We Was Robbed!

After allegations reguarding bribery that led to the goal that would have won the game for Spurland was dissalowed, Manager Sid Morzaria of Spurland had this to say at a press conference:

"If I thought bribery was an integral part of the game, we would be going through that in the practice sessions."

"I will accept the result, what happened has happened. If the opponent resorts to cheating and goes unpunished, I can not do anything about it."

Moving on to tactics and selection for the next game, the Manager had this to say:

"We will now set up a more attacking formation for the next game to regain lost points."

"4.William Prince had injured his ankle again and will be replaced by 12.Daniel Brown and 18. Terry Motson replacing 7. Martin Ricketts in the center of midfield."

"I will encourage my wide defenders to charge up and down the pitch to aid our midfield and attackers."

By looking at the team in the latest practice session, they looked determined as ever. Goals are expected in the next game.

Midfielder Bobby Convey converted a direct free kick in the 19th minute for the only goal of the match and goalkeeper Troy Perkins made six saves for his second consecutive clean sheet and blanked Ruslana's national team 1-0. The win all but clinched a berth in the next round of the Baptism of Fire Cup tournament.

"I just wanted to put a good bending shot on net," Convey said of his goal. "It felt good off my boot and it was a thrill seeing the ball curve into the net."

The Stars withstood immense pressure from the desperate Ruslanans, as the opponents saw their chances of going through to the next round slip away from them as the minutes wore on.

"Troy was unbelievable," Coach Bryan Marshall said. "Our defense did the best they could, but Ruslana was pushing forward with some urgency. It was all we could do to keep them at bay especially in that second half."

"I'm tired, man," Perkins said with a grin. "The team needed me to be in top form and I think I did all right."

"All right?" Marshall said as he overheard the interview. "He's the reason we may be advancing to the next round. Period."

18-07-2004, 18:05
After Sarzonia's 1-0 win over Ruslana in the second of three matches in the first round of the Baptism of Fire Cup, Coach Bryan Marshall announced that the team was considering resting most of its regulars for the match against Kylaai.

However, the move was "highly unpopular" in the locker room and Marshall announced that the team would use its usual starting 11.

"I announced it in the locker room and no one said anything at first. Then Willsie [forward Brian Wilson] spoke up."

"I told the coach, 'wait a minute, we haven't clinched yet,'" Wilson said. "It's going to be too hard to turn intensity off and on in games. I'd rather get out there and win as many matches as we can."

Wilson's speech to Marshall ignited the rest of the team to argue passionately against resting most of the starters. Finally, Marshall rescinded the move to rest starters.

"I figured I'd have a mutiny on my hands," Marshall joked. "The players were dead-set against resting starters for the next round. They said they figured they wanted to stay sharp by playing. Who am I to argue with that?"

The Stars decision came when the team all but clinched a spot in the next round. For Sarzonia to be eliminated, they would have to lose 2-0 to Kylaai and The Water Cooler would have to win by at least two goals.

"We want to have strong momentum going into the next round should we make it," goalkeeper Troy Perkins said.

Members of the Spurland national team were "absloutely delighted" with their sides 2-0 win over West Pacific according to assistant coach Brown. The team had to win the match after drawing the first game against HypercapitaliZm to stand more of a chance for going through the next round of the BoF competition.

The goals came either side of halftime, being scored by midfielder Terry Motson in the first half after 30 minutes and the second goal at 56 minutes on the clock scored by Alaau Morris after a stunning cross directly onto his right foot by fellow forward Robert Yeats. The game was evenly contested until the second goal went in, then it was all Spurland, and the score could have easily been 4-0.

Alaau Morris was also voted man of the match and responded with modestly. "It was a team effort," he said.

Manager Sid Morzaria was unavailable for comment but his changes from the previous game appear to have paid off with Terry Motson scoring the first goal which was a change made by Morzaria after the first game that ended in a 0-0 draw. He is much expected to stick with the same side against Minas Trith as William Price has not yet recovered from his ankle injury and Daniel Brown doing well to fill his shoes.

West Pacific Shows Up To Play!
Beats Minas Trith 3-1 in opener. Loses 2-0 to Spurland in second match.

West Pacific sent a team of All Stars to play in the Baptism of Fire Cup in Liverpool-England and in the opening round they beat a team from Minas Trith 3-1 in what was a spectacular show of Goalkeeping by Johannes Yeager.

This is the first international competition that West Pacific has competed in and they have thus far delivered on their promise to make us proud. A win in the Baptism of Fire Cup would be a huge morale boost going into the World Cup qualifying.

The coach of the West Pacific team had this to say: "Our boys came out confident and did no allow themselves to overwhelmed by the pressure of their first game against an opponent whom they had never played before. I am very proud of them."

In the next days game West Pacific lost 2-0 to Spurland, who seems to have been cheated out of a win against their first round competitors in an apparent bribery scandal, they came out with a mission and came through, using speed that few people in West Pacific can match they ran around our boys and used excellent passing to fight their way to victory. Says Johannes Yeager, starting Goalkeeper for West Pacific: "They are a fast team, we couldn't keep up with them, I was rattled on that first goal, I should have had that one blocked, I got a finger on it but I was to slow to react, it hit the post and went in. But coach said not to worry about it and kept me in, that was a huge moment for me and proved that coach and the entire team still had faith in me."

West Pacific will be playing hypercapitaliZm in the final matchday of the first round, a win would garantee their spot in Second round of the Baptism of Fire, if we draw with hypercapitaliZm then Minas Trith must beat Spurland for our team to advance, a loss would eliminate us from the competition.

Going into the Sarzonian national team's last group match of the Baptism of Fire Cup, the team looked as if it had little to play for with the team only needing one point or a draw by the Water Cooler to advance to the next round. However, the team sure played like it needed the win desperately.

Young forward Brian Wilson scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Stars to a dominant 4-0 win over Kylaai to clinch the best record in the region. The team's offense clicked, converting four of six shots on goal and peppering the Kylaai keeper with 23 shots.

Meanwhile, the defense was stifling, limiting Kylaai to six shots, only two on goal. While goalkeeper Troy Perkins was the star of the previous two matches, he was barely involved in this match.

"It's nice to have matches like those sometimes," Perkins said. "I like to get saves early on to feel like I'm in the match, but it was nice to see the team play so well in front of me."

"Winning a group is a nice accomplishment, especially since this is the first time the senior national team has played a tournament outside our region," Coach Bryan Marshall said. "But the true work begins now. HypercapitaliZm only gave up two goals in their three matches in Group A. Our offense will be put to the test in this match."

"This was only the first step," midfielder and team captain Bobby Convey said. "HypercapitaliZm advanced from a tough group to the semifinals. We're going to have to hope they exhausted themselves just getting here."

"Now is not the time to look past anybody," Wilson said. "They are here facing us in the semifinals for a reason."

Leprechauns Fighting Strong
Defeat Bluesonia, Ebon Hawk; Draw Hazlia
Jonestan 1 - 0 Bluesonia
Jonestan 2 - 0 Ebon Hawk
Jonestan 1 - 1 Hazlia

Fredriko Sxnajder, Jonestani Sporting News, Liverpool England The Fighting Leprechauns are representing Colony and Empire well, off to a superb start in the Baptism of Fire Cup, going 2-0-1 in their first three matches, and sitting comfortably at the top of their group.

On the first day of the tournament, the adrenaline was pumping as the Leps put away Bluesonia with a one-nil victory. Striker Pauxlo Simon scored the game's only goal in the second half at 57 minutes. Sweeper Roberto Planto went in the book with a yellow card early on after an untidy sliding tackle at Bluesonian forward Justin Anhorn on a breakaway run for goal, perhaps accounting for the Leps' subdued pace for the rest of the game. The resulting free kick, however, was easily dealt with by Leps keeper Nigxel Tufnel.

On day two, the Leps' momentum continued unabated against Ebon Hawk, with both Simon and fellow forward Donacxjo Iriso scoring. Iriso scored off a corner at 13 minutes into the match, and Simon doubled the scoreline nineteen minutes later.

On day three, Tufnel's clean sheet was interrupted by a goal from Hazlian striker Buck Legless* at 33 minutes, naturally scored from a header. Simon countered with the equaliser just before the whistle for the end of the first half; the momentum, however, failed to carry over to the second half, which was spent mostly at midfield.

(* OOC: I couldn't find a roster for Hazlia, so that's a placeholder name. If there is an official roster, point me to it and I'll fix that; otherwise, Mr. Legless remains an official Hazlian forward.)

Better and Better
Spurland 0-0 HypercapitaliZm
Spurland 2-0 West Pacific
Spurland 4-0 Minas Trith

Life seems to get easier and easier for the Spurland national football team. The large victory in the last match of group A over Minas Trith garenteed the sides progression to the next stage as group winners on goal difference.

After the disappointing draw in the first game of the tournament which was rigged by bribery allegations, Spurland managed to come back nicely with wins over West Pacific and Minas Trith with 2-0 and 4-0 scores respectively.

The 4-0 win against Minas Trith was the best performance by the team in the whole tournament. Robert Yeats managed to score a hattrick. The goals started pouring in just after 10 minutes on the clock with Yeats given a simple tap in after a stunning pass from midfielder Jackson. Jackson also set up the second goal after nodding a corner kick to set up Alaau Morris just before the referee blew for half-time.

Minas Trith had several chances to get back into the game and were presented with a gloden opportunity when referee Neil Barry awarded a penalty early in the second half. Unfortunatly for Minas Trith, goalkeeper Bryan Robinson was in fine form and managed to save with ease.

The two other goals both late in the second half were the result of some stunning individual play by Yeats, creating both chances after quick a quick counter attack in both cases. He was later awarded the man of the match, "They certainly caught us in fine form today," said Yeats after recieving the award.

Manager Sid Morzaria was again unavailable for comment, he was nowhere to be seen after the match but was definatly seen barking orders throughout the match from the dugout. It is not known why he hasnt appeared since his team has started winning.

The management is expected to again go for the same team that defeated both West Pacific and Minas Trith. The only doubt for the knockout game against The Water Cooler is Theo Buss, who limped off the pitch late in the first half. He is expected to be fit but in a practice match before the game Thorston Willhelmson was seen playing in Buss's position. A statement is expected reguarding selection before the match kicks off.

New problem for Marshall, Stars

Sarzonian Coach Bryan Marshall is the worrying type. That much had been established when the team looked flat in pre tournament practice sessions going into each tournament the Stars had competed in.

"Our philosophy as a coaching staff is you practice like you play," Marshall said. "And until we're actually in the middle of cup tournaments, our practice sessions have been awful."

However, the team was able to breathe more easily after winning its international debut against the group's top seed and World Cup veteran Crystilakere. Following that, the team advanced to the regional semifinals where they fell 1-0 in extra time to Vilita. They then avenged a loss in group play to Krytenia by beating the Celestials in the third place match.

The Stars continued their habit of sluggish practice before tournaments, leading Marshall to schedule a friendly against the three time Sarzonian Football Confederation champion Woodstock Wild. A 2-0 loss to the Wild "was a wake up call for us," assistant coach Barry Owens said.

The team responded, winning three matches by a combined 8-0 score and finishing as the only team in the Baptism of Fire field to finish with the full nine points from the three group matches.

Now, Marshall is worried about complacency.

"We had a fairly easy go of it during the first three matches if you look at the final score sheets," Marshall said. "Things will get much harder in the knockout stages. HypercapitaliZm played (Group A champions) Spurland to a goalless draw. They've only conceded two goals in three matches. We have to be in our top form if we're going to be able to advance."

The team brushed off any predictions of the matchup between The Water Cooler and Spurland, preferring a focus on the match against HypercapitaliZm.

"If we don't win the next match, that discussion would be moot," goalkeeper Troy Perkins said. "We have to get in there and play our best football to make a matchup with either team possible."

Marshall and assistant coaches Dave Wilson and Owens each took tapes from HypercapitaliZm's previous three matches and set about preparing a match plan from them. As usual, forward Brian Wilson was also watching the tapes, joined by team captain Bobby Convey and defender Mike Coyle.

"The ultimate goal is to win a Cup," Brian Wilson said. "We want very much to take a Cup title home with us. But we have to take each match one at a time. Let's not get ahead of ourselves."

When the coaches were asked about Morzaria failing to attent any press event after the first game, Black responded by saying, "Nothing is wrong, hes just been busy, thats all."

"He just needs to concentrate, he will speak to you all when the time is right," added Brown.

There was no further information given, but rumors around the Spurland camp suggest that Morzaria might be having some personal problems.

HypercapitaliZm Defeats West Pacific, Remains On Correct Side Of Field For 90 Minutes
VILITA - Only slightly distracted by the recent change of government and advance to the World Cup finals in Commerce Heights, the HypercapitaliZm team stayed on the right side of the field for the entire match, even though every West Pacific attack was on the left side of the field. Fortunately for HypercapitaliZm, every one of West Pacific's 30 shots at the goal was missed. The West Pacific goalie was bribed by their coach to stop the HypercapitaliZt right-wing attacks, though their efforts were thwarted in the 58th minute when David HZSF kicked the ball, provided by the Liverpool England Communist Party, to the left side of the goal to make the score 1-0. After the game, HypercapitaliZm goalie Tom HZSF brilliantly exploited the 4 West Pacific forwards, forcing them to pay a fee of TDY1,000 for each shot at the goal. HypercapitaliZm advances on a 2-1-0 record to the quarterfinals, where they will play Sarzonia.

The Sarzonian national team continued its impressive run through the Baptism of Fire tournament by handing HypercapitaliZm a 2-0 loss that was not as close as the score suggested.

Midfielder Darwin Russell scored his first international goal off a direct free kick in the 49th minute to open the scoring after several Stars chances went just wide or met with spectacular saves from the HypercapitaliZm goalkeeper. Defender Mike Coyle scored the second goal in the 84th minute after the stubborn HypercapitaliZm defense finally broke down under intense Sarzonian pressure.

"We're a little concerned about not being able to finish our chances," Coach Bryan Marshall said. "But you have to give a lot of credit to their goalkeeper. He was unbelieveable out there."

"That defense was the toughest one we've faced in this tournament," forward Anton Gregor said. "We spent [59 minutes] in the offensive end and to only come away with two second half goals, you have to give some credit to their defense."

HypercapitaliZm conceded only two goals in their three first round matches and were just as stingy in the first half. The Stars fired nine shots, seven on goal in the first half but the Stars had to earn each shot.

"I told the guys to keep up what we were doing," team captain Bobby Convey said. "[Forward Brian Wilson] stood up and said, 'it's only a matter of time' and he was right."

Goalkeeper Troy Perkins notched his fourth clean sheet in the four matches of the tournament, making five saves out of 11 shots fired by HypercapitaliZm.

The Stars have scored 10 goals in the four matches leading up to the regional final and have allowed none. The first two games, Perkins was stellar. The last two games, he didn't have to be.

"Most of the chances weren't difficult," Perkins said. "We expect a much stronger test in the final."

The anticipation and adrenaline continue to build as The Leps prepare for today's big quarterfinal match against Zangara. Jonestani manager Vilcxjo Gxol, however, remains confident that yesterday's tie against Hazlia was just a minor setback on Jonestan's road to Cup victory.

"Sure, Legless's diving header yesterday caught Nige off-guard. I mean, the guy was literally legless!" Gxol told JSN this morning. "But we definitely dealt with that freak occurrence during the post-match team talk yesterday, and our defenders will be extra careful today. We're not going to let that happen again."

In other team news, striker Pauxlo Simon is rumoured to be brimming with confidence, having already scored three goals in three days in this tournament. In addition, he is rumoured to be romantically linked to athlete/entertainer Nina Junipro. Speculation abounds that her latest hit single Don't Kick Me Away was written for Simon. When asked about their relationship, however, Simon said only that "We're good friends."

Spurland Down The Water Cooler to Meet Sarzonia in Regional Finals

The final score was 2-0 to favour the Spurland side. Robert Yeats maintained his extraordinary goalscoring form in the tournament as we signed off in style against The Water Cooler in the regional semi-final match.

The Tothampton FC opened the scoring in the first half to send us on our way to a 2-0 victory and make it four goals in four games in the tournament. Bringing the team total to 8 goals without conceeding a single goal.

Captain Peter Mannes set up the first goal. The livewire midfielder was typically bright and perky on the right side of midfield. Unfortunately the game slipped into neutral after the first goal after 24 minutes on the clock.

"I knew we had it in us," said Mannes. "We are looking forward to the regional final against Sarzonia, both of the teams havnt been scored against so it will be a tight game."

The second goal came just minutes from full time and was a cracker from youngster Dean Morris who came on as a substitute on the 70th minute to inject some pace into the game replacing goalscorer Yeats. Shooting from the outside of the box, hitting the underside of the bar before going in and leaving no hope for The Water Cooler goalkeeper of saving the shot.

Morris was extatic after scoring his first ever goal for the national side, he recieved a yellow card for time wasting after prolonged celebration. "It was worth it," he commented, "Best yellow card of my life."

The Water Cooler had several chances in the game, testing Spurlands keeper Bryan Robinson after just 30 seconds into the game. Robinson was once again in fine form and recieved the man of the match award for his fourth consecutive clean sheet of the Baptism Of Fire Tournament.

"I just kept my head down and there was the help from the defence which really was nice," he said upon recieving the award.

Manager Sid Morzaria once again managed to evade the press after the game, but was photographed talking on his moile phone after the game looking like what can only be called relieved. Assistant coach Brown said, "He just needs some time alone at the moment, but he should be available for the press conference tomorrow."

"Sarzonia is a good side and I believe that they are now the favourites to lift the cup, they just have to get past us. That is no easy task by looking at the way our players are playing at the moment."

Striker Alaau Morris picked up a slight knock in injury time and is likely to miss the next game. His brother Dean Morris impressed today and is widely expect to replace him for the match against Sarzonia. Tomorrows pre-game press conferece should shed light on a number of issues such as selection as well as Morzaria's reluctance to attend press events.

Sarzonia-Spurland matchup to be "one for the ages"

The Sarzonian national team's final training session heading into the Vilita Regional Final against Group A champion Spurland was one of the most spirited in team history as players picked up their intensity level "a couple of notches," team captain and midfielder Bobby Convey said.

"This matchup's going to be one for the ages," Convey said. "The two best teams in the Vilita Region are going to be meeting for the final. How can you not be stoked for that?"

"Spurland is an outstanding team, no question about it," Coach Bryan Marshall said. "They did not concede a goal at all this tournament and they advanced from a brutally tough group. We will have to play the best match we have ever played if we want to win this match."

Following the training session, Marshall and the coaching staff sat down with game tapes of each of Spurland's matches. They promised to "be there after the cleaning crew leave," to study the tapes looking for any tendency or weakness they could exploit.

They weren't alone.

"Practically the entire team wanted to join the coaches, but they would only let a few players in," forward Anton Gregor said. He wasn't one of the players allowed into the facility, so he asked the coaches to make tapes for everyone. When they only produced two other tapes, midfielder John Benmont offered to invite the rest of the team to his hotel room to watch the tapes. Meanwhile, Convey, forward Brian Wilson, and goalkeeper Troy Perkins were invited to join the coaching staff.

"We'll look for tendencies, weakness, etc. just like the coaches do," Benmont said. "Then I'll call the coaches or Willsie to find out what they think. We'll compare notes this morning before we travel to the stadium. We've got to be at the top of our game if we're going to beat those guys."

Marshall bristled when he was informed that Spurland assistant coach Brown labelled the Stars the favorites to hoist the cup.

"They're just saying that to get into our heads," Marshall said sharply. "This is going to be a tough, tough match. Nobody's won anything yet."

Assistant Brown Talks About Spurlands Chances

In a rather informal chat with the press after a training session assistant coach of the Spurland national team, Brown let his feelings on the upcoming regional final against Sarzonia be known.

"As you can see from our practice, we are taking things like any other game, I still do consider ourselves as the underdogs. They are definatly the favourites, but it will still be a hard game. As we are not the favourites, we can only win.

"Its a shame Alaau(Morris) is almost 100% out for the game, but i'm sure his brother(Dean Morris) will be a good cover. If he could score another goal like he did against The Water Cooler, it wouldnt do us any harm at all.

"Sid(Morzaria) was a bit pissed when I said that Sarzonia are the favorites, he likes to think that we are the better side. But they have a slightly better record coming into this game. We will still be reguarded as winners when we get home.

"Whatever happens I feel it will be a tight game, and whoever wins the game will go in to with the whole damn thing."

It looks like we could be in for a cracker of a match if this is anything to go by.

Evil SocialiZt States of Sarzonia Defeat HypercapitaliZm Due To Government Interference
VILITA - What would have been an eazy HypercapitaliZm win over a struggling socialist nation turned into a devastating 2-0 loss as the Sarzonian government gave some of the 71% of income stolen from the players back in the form of bribes. This action was thoroughly protested by HZSF officials, arguing that "a soccer match should be between two teams of 11 players and their incomes". The HZSF had no choice but to accept the decision, as the WCC (World Communist Committee) would not give in to their demands. Even with the unfair bribes, the HypercapitaliZts tried as hard as they could to pull off a victory with their larger incomes. Their efforts did not succeed as, in the 75th and 79th minutes, Sarzonian kicks caught by fans high in the stadium were counted as goals by the bribed officials, leading to a 2-0 loss. A random spectator was quoted as saying, "This cannot go on! The so-called communist and socialist nations steal from their citizens, and the WCC allows them to use their stolen property on the playing field! It is an outrage!"

Leps Advance to LE Finals
Fredriko Sxnajder, Jonestan Sporting News

Liverpool, England - A concentrated effort on defence in today's semifinal matchup against Zangara led to a scoreless draw after 90 minutes today. Leps striker Donacxjo Iriso managed to send a shot wide right of goal early in the first half, and Pauxlo Simon's three shots were all dealt with by the Zangaran keeper. Beyond that, however, Zangara's defencive prowess was well able to keep Jonestan's midfielders from getting the ball up the field.

Fortunately, however, the Leps' defence played equally well, and keeper Nigxel Tufnel dealt with six shots on target and a corner with aplomb.

At the start of extra time, Jonestan manager Vilcxjo Gxol subbed in reserve midfielders Erik Martin and Kori Hart for David Birno and Macxjo Vinberg, respectively, hoping to counter the effects of 90 minutes' worth of fatigue. However, two periods of extra time failed to result in a goal for either side, and the match went into penalty kicks to decide it.

Jonestani forwards Iriso, and Simon, plus midfielders Martin, David Evano, and Johano Bongxiovi each put away their tries, leaving Zangaran keeper absolutely stunned. On Zangara's second try, however, forward Corky St. Clair's was snatched out of the air by Tufnel, propelling the Leps into the regional finals.

In a post-game interview, Gxol told JSN (with a half-empty bottle of Tanqueray in hand), "Oh, of course, we're absolutely delighted to have made it this far! Extra time was a bit tense, as was the shootout, but we showed the world that the Leps don't get fazed when it comes down to the wire." (Added defender Brian Majo, "We stay cool when Under Pressure!") Gxol continued, "We have learned a lesson today, though, and from here on out we're not putting all our eggs in one basket, be it defence, midfield or striking. We need to be a well-rounded team, and that's exactly what we're going to be."

"Invincibles" Only Nearly So

Northbank's run in the Baptism of Fire was ended within spitting distance of the tape as the Invincibles were beaten by Jonestan.

Both sides fought tooth and nail, and Terry Hanratty came within a gnat's crotchet of scoring as his shot was tipped over the top by the Jonestan goalie, Tufnel.

The match was sealed with just six minutes left on the clock, as David Evano latched onto a Bongxiovi cross to nod past Jon Luman.

Northbank will remain in Liverpool England to play the loser of Spurland v Sarzonia in the Third Place Playoff. Many Northbankis are putting their hopes on Spurland to win; Sarzonia have had the Indian sign over the Principality's governing nation (Krytenia) and the Invincibles want some revenge.

Vilita - Jonestan's Fighting Leprechauns advance with a one-nil victory, resulting from a surprise Bongxiovi-to-Evano cross very late in the match, over the Northbank "Invincibles" to the Baptism of Fire Cup Final, to play against either Sarzonia or Spurland at the 87,000-seat Tivali Ring Stadium in Alikki-Corra, Vilita. Despite the fact that this means playing on the "home turf" of the Vilitan Region, the Leps are undaunted. "All it really means is that we're just playing in a bigger stadium," noted Leps midfielder David Birno. "You may tell yourself, 'This is not my beautiful house,' but it won't be Sarzonia's or Spurland's house, either. Home-field advantage is really a myth in a tournament."

Added Leps forward Pauxlo Simon, "Plus, this lets more Jonestani football fans make it to the match." The Leps' success in this tournament has proved to be a boon for the nation's airline industry, with over sixty red-eye flights full of football fans added to the schedule and departing in the past two days, since news broke that the Leps had made the Liverpool England regional semis. Whether this was a veiled hint that Nina Junipro might show up for the big match remains to be seen.

As the Sarzonia-Spurland matchup remains to be played tonight, Northbank media are reporting that they hope Spurland advances in that regional final. Most Jonestani fans have found themselves in agreeance with that sentiment, since Sarzonia has proved to be the powerhouse of the tournament, going 3-0-0 in the group stage. However, as Jonestani football fan Antonio Vendoj, who had managed to snag tickets to all six matches played of the tournament, mentioned, "Personally, I'd like us to get Spurland. They've done too well so far; everyone else has at least drawn once." Leps sweeper Roberto Planto, however, noted a third viewpoint: "It doesn't matter who we find ourselves up against. We're all going to go out and give it a hundred percent from the kickoff, and Nige is ten feet tall between the posts. They might get a forward past me, but any striker who does will find his route shut off in the box."

Despite trailing in a match for the first time in the 16th Baptism of Fire tournament, the Sarzonian national team proved its mettle by coming from behind to defeat Spurland 4-2 to win the Vilita Region final.

Defender Mike Coyle scored the match winner in the 77th minute and fellow defender Bryson Juergens added an insurance marker in the first minute of stoppage time after the two teams entered the first half drawn 2-2. Forward Dean Morris scored the first goal of the match 11 minutes in, ending goalkeeper Troy Perkins' shutout streak at 416 minutes.

"The streak is no big deal; the important thing is to win football matches," Perkins said. "It was great while it lasted, but it's just a stat."

The streak began after Krytenian forward Roger Celsen beat Perkins at the end of first half stoppage time in the AOCAF tournament third place match and continued through the semifinals of the Baptism of Fire Cup. Spurland captain Peter Mannes added a tally in the 16th minute that gave the Group A champions a 2-0 lead, leading Juergens and Coyle arguing about who missed an assignment until forward Brian Wilson chided both.

"I told them, 'this match is far from over. Keep your heads in it,'" Wilson said after the game. He then took it upon himself to restore focus to the briefly rattled Stars by making a sterling tackle on Spurland's Robert Yates before he could set up a shot and then scoring the first goal against Spurland keeper Bryan Robinson in the 32nd minute. Midfielder John Benmont drew the match level with a goal just before first half stoppage time expired.

"We knew going in this match would not be easy," Coach Bryan Marshall said. "Willsie deserves all the credit for keeping everyone focused. His tackle was the turning point of the match, no question in my mind."

"I didn't think the tackle was all that spectacular," Wilson said. "It was either make a play or we could be down 3-0."

The Stars take on Jonestan at Tivali Ring Stadium in Alikki-Corra, Vilita. Some oddsmakers are predicting that Sarzonia will hoist the cup, but Marshall would have none of that.

"We just had a tough, tough match against Spurland. It'll be interesting to see what happens after a match like that one."

Final Preview: Sarzonia v. Jonestan

Alikki-Corra, Vilita (ASP) -- Coach Bryan Marshall looked impassively at the team's final training session before the Baptism of Fire finals against Jonestan at Tivali Ring Stadium. The players' usual light-heartedness at practice has made way for a steely determination as the Sarzonians advance farther and farther in the tournament.

"This team seems to train with better focus when there's more at stake," Marshall said. "It's a maddening habit, but I guess the results counter my argument."

Marshall disagreed with reporters who predicted that Sarzonia would clinch the Baptism of Fire Cup, saying "Jonestan is a tough side; they've only conceded one goal in the run of play throughout the tournament. Tufnel may be the toughest keeper we've ever faced."

"The biggest thing about Jonestan is we really don't know what we're facing," team captain Bobby Convey said. "We just got the tapes on their previous matches. The tapes had been a lot easier to get when we were playing Vilita Region opponents. Hopefully, they have had the same problems getting tapes on us."

"They seem to be aware of what they're facing," forward Brian Wilson said after looking at various quotes in the newspapers throughout the region. "We can't let a few oddsmakers and scribes get in our heads. There's still plenty of football to be played."

Players refused to talk on the record about the comments in the Jonestan media regarding home field advantage, but a team source who spoke on condition of anonymity said, "they had to travel from Liverpool England to get here. We only have to take the tram to go to the stadium. We've been using the facilities here since the tournament began, so it's like having home field advantage."

"Who said that?" Marshall said, his face showing panic. "I told the guys not to say anything that could be put on their locker room walls."

The coaching staff assembled with goalkeeper Troy Perkins, defender Mike Coyle, midfielder and team captain Bobby Convey, and forward Brian Wilson to break down the tapes and consult on the match plan for Jonestan. Wilson said he kept his cell phone on while midfielder John Belmont was listening in to relay the message to the rest of the team, which had assembled in his hotel room with Jonestan match tapes.

"We want to make sure everyone's on the same page," Wilson said. "They're a great team and we have to make sure that we play the best match of our football lives if we want to hoist that cup."

It's Official: Leps To Face Sarzonia
Team Members Set For Baptism of Fire Final
Fredriko Sxnajder, Jonestan Sporting News

VILITA - As the scores went out that Sarzonia won the Vilita regional finals, and would become Jonestan's opponent in the BoF final, an air of somber determination suddenly overswept the jubilation the team had been experiencing in the locker room. "The good news is, now we at least know who we'll be up against," manager Vilcxjo Gxol told JSN. "The not-quite-so-good news, as we've been expecting, is, it's the juggernaut of the tournament."

And quite the juggernaut Sarzonia has been. In five matches to date, Sarzonian keeper Troy Perkins has allowed only two goals, and both in their most recent match. Of course, his counterpart on the Leps, Nigxel Tufnel, has allowed only one. Armchair pundits, naturally, are predicting a low-scoring affair, in which the keepers shall probably play a very vital role. Back home in Jonestan's gambling mecca of Dabstono, bookkeepers have found themselves in quite the quandary as a result, and those who are willing to take in wagers on the match at all have set the line dead even (a few of the more optimistic have offered a half-point spread, though there seems to be little consensus as to which side those bookies favour).

When asked to comment, Gxol told JSN that "Sarzonia's fielded an excellent team. They know how to make their possession count. If there's one thing the match tapes have taught us, it's that we're going to have to get the ball up the field, and quick. We can't afford to let up for a moment; even their defenders don't hesitate to bury the ball in the back of the net." Holding up a clipping of an ASP article, he added, "Luckily, we've got Nige in there, and even their manager recognises his potential."

Tufnel commented, "Yeah, I saw what they said in the Sarzonian papers, and it really is flattering. Of course, I can't afford to be taken in by flattery once I step onto the pitch. As soon as that whistle blows, they're going to be on me like a midget on Stonehenge. I've seen their propensity for goalmaking, and that'll bring anyone back down to reality. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Troy (Perkins) tries to put on in off a goal kick, if he gets the chance."

JSN asked the Leps if the travel from Liverpool England to Vilita for the final match was a concern for the match. Sweeper Roberto Plant added, "Sure, on some level, it's stranger here ... than over there. But I can't stay down for too long now. We're just gonna go out there and play like we're back in Jonestan in front of a packed house. I mean, I'm in the mood." Added fellow defender Brian Majo, "We're just gonna play the game," and Mikelo Stipo joined in, "You just gotta make your stand in whatever place you are." Forward Gari Ricxrat, though not expected to start this match, added "You've just got to roll with the changes." All in all, the Leps don't seem too troubled by the travel.

Secret: Gxol intends to switch to put on a bit more offencive emphasis with a 4-3-3 formation:

Stars bristle at bribery allegations

VILITA - Following Sarzonia's 2-0 defeat of HypercapitaliZm, serious allegations of bribery confronted the Stars after the victory put them into the Vilita Region final.

Coach Bryan Marshall was not available for comment, but word from assistant coach Dave Wilson is that the coach was, "livid" about the accusations.

"Accusing a team of bribery when there is absolutely no evidence to support a claim is potentially a libelous situation," Jonathan Cochrane, the team's legal counsel said. "We take slanderous speech very seriously and we intend to prosecute that at the highest possible court of international law.

"Bribes? Are you kidding," team captain Bobby Convey asked incredulously. "You saw the match. We beat that team fair and square. That result should have been 3-nil or worse.

"Their reporters didn't even get the action right," he added. "If we got paid that much money, I sure haven't seen it."

Forward Brian Wilson pulled out his wallet and opened it up to show the reporter sent to interview him. In it were three dollar bills and an ATM receipt.

"Look at this," Wilson said, pulling out the receipt and handing it to the reporter. "That's my account balance as of three days ago." The amount read $57.32.

"If we were paid a bribe by our government, you'd think we'd have seen the money by now," Wilson said.

A team source reported that the allegations would be "plastered all over the locker room walls" the next time HypercapitaliZm or any country choosing to accuse the Sarzonians of foul play was set to face the Stars.

"They definitely have not heard the last of Sarzonia, that's for sure," Convey said.

Stars ponder changes for finals

VILITA - Following a marathon study session looking at the Jonestan
tapes, Coach Bryan Marshall confided to a reporter that he was considering
changing its usual match plan for the final of the Baptism of Fire Cup.

"We went all around different ways; a 4-5-1 with only (forward Anton) Gregor up front to tighten up the defense a little; a 3-5-2 to keep possession
longer; a 3-4-3 or even a 3-3-4 to implement a more attacking style, you name it, we've thought of it," Marshall said.

But when the team gathered, the prevailing opinion among the players was that the team should stick with its 4-4-2 formation since the team was comfortable with the system after playing in it for five matches.

"We decided we didn't want to change what brought us here," forward Brian
Wilson said. "We've worked on ways to tighten our defense up to prevent
them from putting us in too deep a hole, but we also want to make sure we
play Sarzonian football. That's really our best chance to bring the cup home
to Sarzonia."

Team captain Bobby Convey agreed.

"If we change the whole way we play football because we're intimidated,
that gives them an advantage," Convey said. "We got here by playing attacking football and we've studied their keeper very closely. He'll be a tough nut to crack, but we'll have to see what we can do to get one past him."

Assistant coach Barry Owens sat with Convey, Gregor, and Wilson with
tapes of Jonestanian keeper Nigxel Tufnel's league matches. While the rest of
the team relaxed in the hotel pool, the coach and players studied Tufnel's
tendencies and looked for a way to exploit them.

"We're going to have to put a lot of pressure on Tufnel," Gregor said. "And not get discouraged if he makes a lot of saves. If we can put enough shots
on him..." he said, his voice trailing.

Assistant Coach Dave Wilson said that his family was coming in to see him and Brian, his son and "the place was going to be packed with Sarzonian fans." Roughly 55,000 of the 87,000 seats in Tivali Ring Stadium were purchased by Sarzonian ticket brokers. According to police reports, tickets
were being scalped for as much as $1,500 Sarzonian ($720 US.).

While the team said it would maintain its usual match plans for the final, Marshall said the team would throw "a few wrinkles" at the Jonestans in an
attempt to throw them off their game plan. Sources tell us that Marshall is
anticipating Jonestan playing a more attacking-oriented style than they normally play.

"He's told the team that he wants them to exploit any mistakes they
might make in changing their formation for this match," a team source said.
The team began to work on their counterattacks. Marshall also cautioned the
team against taking the match for granted.

"They were better than seven other sides in their region, so we're no better
than they are," Marshall said. "They say offense wins games, but defense
wins championships and their defense is one of the best we've seen. We're
going to have to be in top form if we're going to have a chance."

[OOC: I'm not going to say he knows IC what formation you're playing; it's only natural that a supposed underdog would pull out all the stops. Marshall
knows his team is viewed as the favorite by some people no matter how many
times he will try to deny it.]

'Fire' kind to Stars; Sarzonia Wins Cup, 3-0

Alikki-Corra, Vilita (ASP) -- - Maybe now Sarzonia national team coach Bryan Marshall can rest a little easier.

The Stars reverted to their dominant ways in the tournament in front of a very pro-Sarzonia crowd at Tivali Ring Stadium and throttled Jonestan, 3-0, to win the 16th Baptism of Fire Cup and send the Sarzonian national team into the World Cup on a roll. The team outscored its six opponents 17-2.

Forward Brian Wilson opened the scoring for Sarzonia in the 42nd minute - on the ninth shot on Jonestan keeper Nigxel Tufnel. Tufnel frustrated the Stars with spectacular saves on several well-organized runs through the surprised Jonestan backline but Wilson followed his advice to the team's offensive players that, "it was only a matter of time."

Tufnel only allowed one goal in the run of play in the Fighting Leprechauns' previous five matches, but he was overwhelmed by Sarzonian pressure.

"They looked like they had 12 men on the pitch," Tufnel said. "I don't remember the last time I faced that many shots."

The goal just moments before halftime may have done more than put a goal behind Tufnel, it may have taken much of the spirit out of the Leps. The Stars also got goals from forward Anton Gregor and midfielder Darwin Russell and nearly added an insurance marker from goalkeeper Troy Perkins in the 89th minute when his goalkick hit the right goalpost.

Perkins for his part faced nine shots, only three on goal as Leps manager Vilcxjo Gxol's plan to play a 4-3-3 backfired. The Stars' pressure and the defense's tightening exposed a team not comfortable in its new formation.

"The guys up front made it real easy on me," Perkins said as he notched his fifth clean sheet in six matches. "I just had to do my job and we were as good as gold."

"This is great," Marshall said above the din of celebrating players in the Sarzonian locker room. "This validates all the hard work these men have put in all throughout the tournament, except for that first practice session," Marshall grinned. He could afford to smile now.

Wilson and Perkins shared the team's most valuable player trophy and the team celebrated late into the night in Alikki-Corra. The Sarzonian government announced that a victory parade would take place in the nation's capital of Woodstock, possibly by Saturday.

3rd Place Result: Northbank 1:3 Spurland
Spurland come in third at first ever international tournament.

In a thrilling encounter Spurland only managed to make the result beyond doubt on the 89th minute, untill then it was a very open game. Northbank were pushing all the way until Spurland's third goal went in.

Northbank went one goal up early on in the first half when striker Raymond chipped keeper Robinson, being only the second match where a clean sheet wasnt managed by him this competition. Spurland soon equalised with Theo Buss scoring from a freekick from 30 yards over the area which was deflected by a Northbank defender and into the goal just after half an hour on the clock. The score remained 1-1 till half time.

Dean Morris, the young replacement for his older, more experienced brother managed to score another goal just after the restart, but Northbank never looked out of it. The Northbank side kept pusing until a fast counter attack by Spurland provided the decider, scored by substitute midfielder John Lewis at the death. His chances of finding a club for the next season were greatly improved with this performance. He didnt act like the average player he was always thought to be.

Manager Sid Morzaria returned to speak to the press after the match saying, "We did well today, too bad we wernt in the final having lost to eventual champions Sarzonia. We managed to score the only 2 goals against them the entire competition and this is worth mentioning. Also we didnt do too bad defensivly ourselves."

Commenting on his apparent dissapearance after matches he said, "The reason why I did not wish show myself at any press event is because I wanted to concentrate on my team. My absence was ment to draw attention away from the team and make them feel less pressure, and it appears to have paid off."

The team are now back home and the fact that they didnt win the tournament doesnt seem to have been noticed judging from the teams reception upon arrival back home.
