IC: The Xanthalian government, in a joint Triumvirate and Council decision, announced today that they would be eliminating up to 5/7 of the nation's space forces and up to 49/50 of the country's military.
"The time for Xanthal's militaristic participation in foreign affairs is at an end," declared Triumvirate Atachi Kyomino in his speech relaying the decision to the domestic and international community today. "From this time forward we will remove this great nation's ability to threaten the safety of others." The decision wasmade by an overwhelming majority, with even the Minister of the Armada and Military voting to approve the cut.
"The Socialist Republic is and will continue to be well able to defend itself," he said when questioned by a reporter. "Both the Aellis and Than systems are equipped with massive defensive grids composed of shielding stations and weapons platforms, and we will continue to maintain more than adequate Military and Armada forces to insure national security."
The cut, Xanthal's biggest single armed forces reduction in history, will begin next month with the gradual phasing out of Armada starships and soldiers. It will continue for ten years, and involve the steady transfer of personnel into other, nonmilitary areas. Triumvir Erica Quoss, the nation's senior Triumvir, took time to reassure listeners that Xanthal's "open door" policy would not end. "This nation has for hundreds of years and will continue to be open to all immigration, emmigration, visitation, and trade. We will not end our friendships, nor will we cease our diplomatic efforts throughout the known universe."
Though official numbers are still pending, the decision will eliminate one of the nation's two Excursion class vessels, eight of its ten Eclipse class capital warships, and its single Apocalypse class starship. The Military will have nearly its entire space transportation force cut as well as most of its personnel and heavy weaponry. Xanthal will also be closing its military storefront. All told, the cut is expected to remove around one hundred million personnel, one million Military craft, and five hundred starships from armed forces service.
"This marks a new era for the Socialist Republic," said Triumvir Nara Eche. "From this day forward we will strike out only in direct defense of our nation, let only those who would attack us feel our sting. We will cast aside our weapons! We are at peace!"
