MILITARY
Military Age: Dedicated military units serve upon exiting the factory.
Term of Service: Indefinite; any unit may be asked to serve in the military at any point, for however long they are needed. In practice, most of the population is needed to maintain the economy in this newly-formed colony.
Total Number of Units ready for conscription: 250,000 units of various kinds.
Notes: All of these units have been tested, but very few are in active production. The Gamman infrastructure is much too new to accomadate the creation of a large, fully-equipped military as yet, and so even the prototypes of many units have been recycled for their material value.
Military Units to Date:
G12B5 Command Unit
http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com/img/docbot_beauty.jpg
A field commander, also employed in peacetime as overseers. Their primary feature is an expanded AI core, additional on-board software AI and a high-bandwidth uplink to the central command core. These robots are rarely seen on the battlefield. despite their prevalence. Each one oversees the operation of a small deployment of more specialized units.
G12C7 General Support Unit
http://www.denjin108.com/sketchwork/020216/robot.jpg
An all-purpose maintainence, repair and logistics model, adapted from one of the most common industrial chassis. C7s are the general-purpose non-combat personnel, fulfilling roles ranging from the equivalent of combat medic to handling logistical supply chains.
G12F5 Main Infantry Unit
http://village.infoweb.ne.jp/~fwja6505/images/stills/robot.jpg
Ubiquitous and cheap, F5s are the primary general-purpose infantry unit, capable of meeting a wide variety of mission roles. Gamma-12 armies rarely form battle lines, and F5s suffice as commandos or massed infantry as the need arises. Several on-board mission packages are available.
G12E6 Emplaced Defense Unit
http://www.cadbim.com.tr/egitimornek/Mekanik/robot.jpg
A rather simple, but effective chassis. E6s mount a single high-powered laser (OOC: similar to the aircraft-mounted ones now going into service in the Middle East) capable of focusing on air or land targets. When given radar telemetry, these units can engage a wide variety of targets ranging from tanks to individual missile rounds. The primary weakness of this unit is it's stationary nature; they are large, hot targets that show up brightly on infrared displays. For this reason they are fiercely defended and linked to a forward observor network--in any battlezone with defending E6s the primary objective of the Gamma-12 forces is to protect the guns until all major threats to the emplacements can be eliminated.
G12H4 Covert Reconaissance Unit
http://www.shadow.org.uk/images/robot-buckley-simplehex.jpg
Insect-sized units crammed with sensors, these are deployed liberally throughout Gamma-12 and on battlefields. Like the cockroaches they are usually camoflagued to resemble, where there is one, several more are hidden close by. They gather information, evacuate their target and transmit their findings to the command units.
G12E1 Underwater Operations Unit
http://www.irtc.org/ftp/pub/stills/2000-08-31/robot.jpg
A versatile undersea unit. Usually employed for peaceful purposes, the military models have upgraded propulsion systems and mini-torpedo launchers. They are sonar-baffled and difficult for large submarines to attack or even spot. Gamma-12s naval philosophy has little place for larger submersibles as yet; these small, versatile units can place explosives, cut nets and transport limited cargo.
G12D5 Ground-Effect Tank
http://www.sheriftariq.org/images/markers/hovertank.jpg
A swift, durable hovercraft equipped with an experimental CPAW (Charged Particle Accelerator Weapon). The beam suffers from line-of-sight limitations and is power-hungry (requiring considerable recharge and cooling times), but burns through armor with ease. It also irradiates the target heavily. The weapon is powerful but aims slowly and is somewhat prone to malfunction. The command minds of Gamma-12 consider this to be within acceptable limits and the tanks are deployed wherever heavy firepower is needed.
G12D7 Aerial Gunship
http://www.greylight.com/gallery/htdawn2.jpg
A heavily-armed aircraft roughly equivalent to a combat helicopter. These serve as the primary aerial defense of Gamma-12s settlements and installations; they are also effective on the offensive, capable of attacking both land and sea units. Their performance against fighter aircraft is rather miserable; they are much too slow and restricted in altitude to compete in this arena. They are, however, the scourge of tanks and infantry.
G12D6 Ground-Effect Tank
http://www.ping.be/~hubob/DonTBE/TA/images/ArmHovertank.jpg[img]
A slower, more durable unit mounting a conventional gun. The backbone of Gamma-12 armored forces. Unlike the G5, G6 tanks are incredibly reliable and much cheaper to produce. Note that both tanks are smaller and less brawny than a typical MBT.
G12D8 Ground-Effect Tank
[img]http://koti.mbnet.fi/~jphuttun/akyro/gramtank.jpg
The equivalent of a Main Battle Tank, D8s are incredibly rare at this point; Gamma-12 military philosophy tends to lend itself to smaller, more flexible units, but the D8 does come in handy. Far more reliable than the D5 and with much heavier firepower than the D6 (with greater combat survivability than either), the D8 is an expensive, but worthwhile addition to the armored forces of Gamma-12. They are not currently a priority, as Gamma-12 has no active plans to commit aggression against a neighboring state.
G12C3 Recon-Bomber Aircraft
http://www.dreamlandresort.com/aircraft/predator.jpg
The C3 is a multi-role aircraft capable of delivering ordnance and collecting data. It is the single most common unit in Gamma-12's peacetime air force.
G12C9 Stratospheric Bomber
http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/codez/stratplans/1996/aero5.gif
A large, extremely fast craft meant to operate outside the range of anti-aircraft weapons, it recieves targeting telemetry from C3 surveillance units and bombs its targets from well outside the range of their defenses. It operates well outside the operational cieling of most conventional fightercraft. It also performs high-altitude surveillance.
G12C6 Stealth Bumber
http://users.cihost.com/ata/aircraft/manta2.jpg
A more conventional bomber. Relies on radar-absorbant materials and electronic warfare to evade detection (obviously not a perfect defense). Often operate in conjunction with C9s.
G12C4 Fighter-Interceptor
http://www.americanantigravity.com/graphics/nick-cook/bae-antigravity-art.jpg
Gamma-12's primary fightercraft, and the only one on active duty. Highly maneuverable, with moderate speed. Firepower is sufficient, but not notable. This unit is primarily noted for it's extreme maneuvering capabilities, as it lacks a pilot affected by G-forces.
G12C1 Attack Craft
http://www.ping.be/~hubob/DonTBE/TA/Unit_pages/armbrawler.htm
The primary aerial attack model. Heavily armed, it is somewhere in design philosophy between an A-10 Thunderbolt and a supersonic jet fighter. These are used on specific targets; the unit proceeds at Mach 2 towards it's goal, slows to reduce combat stress, and then engages the target. Like the A-10, deploying all it's weaponry for more than a few seconds visibly slows the craft.
G12F2 Infantry Support Unit
http://www.ping.be/~hubob/DonTBE/TA/Unit_pages/armfido.htm
A heavy-weapons unit deployed with infantry squads. The large back-mounted cannon fires high explosive shells, but can be refitted for armor-piercing if tanks are an expected target. This unit has a much lower targeting profile than many Gamman military units but is comparitively slow, with a top speed of just 50 mph.
G12C7 Supersonic Bomber
http://www.ping.be/~hubob/DonTBE/TA/Unit_pages/armthunder.htm
A high-speed, high-performance long-range bomber. Currently a minimal-production priority, as their uses are primarily offensive. These units are theoretically capable of delivering nuclear weapons, but Gamma-12 has yet to develop them.
G12E8 Defense Emplacement
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/cordoom.jpg
Heavily armed and more rugged than the E6, this emplacement mounts a variety of guns. The E8 is quite durable and used for defending military installations.
G12C10 Heavy Transport
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/damascus-640.jpg
Another large multirole aircraft capable of deploying bombs or troops, or transporting cargo. This craft is the backbone of any extended campaign on foreign soil, and is easily refitted to whatever duties are required of it.
G12E17 Hydrofoil
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/argvector800.jpg
A light combat hydrofoil. These are equivalent to patrol boats, and their primary strengths are their low targeting profile and considerable speed. The paired laser weapons are only somewhat effective against large ships. They do, however, excel in anti-missile naval operations, and may be deployed to knock out destroyer weapons, effectively disarming enemy vessels.
G12E18 Coastal Assault Boat
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/millennium_water1.jpg
A small watercraft equipped with oversize guns, these act as offshore artillery and can also engage much larger destroyers. Operating in packs, a small battle group can overwhelm much larger ships. The lack of crew allows Gamman warships to be much smaller than their human counterparts, which is reflected in the E18s small hull size. They are also equipped with sonar bouys and depth charges for antisubmarine warfare.
G12E12 Destroyer
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/UN_victory_class_battleship.jpg
The largest Gamman naval unit in service at this time, the E12 is an all-purpose ship that doubles as a troop transport. Heavily-armed and heavily armored for it's size, it is the pinnacle of Gamman naval might.
G12C2 Fighter
A general-purpose fighter plane, with better combat profile than the C4 and heavier firepower. Longer range makes it suitable for offensive operations.
G12F4 Heavy Infantry
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/thud_original_640x480.jpg
A slow, sturdy and powerfully-armed infantry unit, capable of doubling as light artillery with it's adjustable mortars.
G12F10 Light Combat Vehicle
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/as_jeffy.jpg
A fast-attack vehicle. Doubles as a reconaissance unit. The F10 is swift, lightly armored and utterly ineffective against tanks or other armored units.
G12D6 Assault Gunship
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/conradunits_predator.jpg
The D6 mounts a cluster of heavy missiles, and is designed to attack hardened targets and warships.
G12E10 High-Altitude Bomber
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/TAForever_Condor.JPG
A heavy bomber designed to test an infrared signature masking system.
Its detectable heat emissions are very low.
G12E11 Reconaissance/EW Unit
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/TAForever_Lyra_Sephiroth.jpg
A plane mounting excellent radar and detection systems, as well as electronic warfare equipment. A squadron of these can blanket a large area with interference and jam electronic communications.
G12F1 Mobile Relay
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/pavo_taforever.jpg
An unarmed communications relay, the critical component in sychronizing various battle groups with the main network mind of Gamma-12. These are employed when rapid response time from executive decision-makers is a factor.
G12E9 Assault Boat
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/rhyossrender21.jpg
The backbone of the Gamman navy; well-armed and versatile. Gamman naval units almost never operate alone, for the simple reason that no one model can compare to the performance of individual human ships. The E9 attempts to address the issue by forming a strong core force around which other naval units rally. These robots are not remarkable, but operating in groups they give pause to enemy fleet commanders, and can hold their own in combat,
G12F2 Light Infantry
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/herison.jpg
A very basic unit, F2s rely on swarm intelligence and are typically deployed to sow havoc in a contested area. They are not individually powerful, but they are cheap, and their novel swarm behavior makes them low-maintainence.
G12E20 Light Carrier
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/illusion.jpg
A troop transport and aircraft support unit. None currently exist.
G12F3 Light Artillery
http://www.planetannihilation.com/image.asp?src=/gallery/uploaded/Guyver.jpg
A swift artillery vehicle capable of firing medium-range shells, up to three at a time, in several dispersal patterns.
