Sex education

Teenagers of today don't appear to be educated enough about underage sex and teenage pregnancies. Many parents appear to be either neglecting to explain or are too embarrassed to inform their children about the concequences of their actions and the many dieseses and infections caught through unprotected sex.

Virtex is running a training program to help educate parents and teenagers on the dangers of underage and/or unprotected sex and unwanted pregnances.

Any more ideas would be gratefully received! :)

Callisdrun recommends that the teens be educated about birth control, as it has proved highly effective here. Sex is not like drugs for teenagers. "Just saying no" is a lot more difficult in this case. Why? because it goes against millions of years of genetic evolution. Teens' brains are not hardwired to say, smoke for example, but the desire for carnal relations is embedded permanently in the minds of teenagers. No matter how much they are discouraged, they will engage in relations of this intimate nature, so what we have done is a program to inform them on how it may be done more safely. Since the institution of this, the teen pregnancy and STD rates in Callisdrun have dropped by an enormous amount. It has been very successful.

Weyr has a simple policy:

We provide High School students with a full semester class in which they will learn the processes of the various modes of sex, STDs, and pregnancy. Otherwise, it's their business. We compute the cost of the various treatments they get from the government for STDs and abortions as part of their normal taxes . . .

Easy solution-Dont make such a stigma about it. Realise that the human biological process creates hormones that will pull the teenagers towards sex. Then simply stop making a big deal about it, and accept it. You cant fight eons of evolution.

Muktar doesn't fight it. It just stresses contraceptive use. It's near impossible to find a Muktari virgin above fourteen.

Since our people are not bound by recreational biological urges, i'm afraid we can not offer much assistance for you in this field. However, if an appropriate program is found, we will give funding for it. We do have humans in our lands, and this problem could arise here. We hope the research findings will be shared.

OOC: Don't you think it's a little unlikely that teengers will flee their country because their Government introduced a Sex Ed program? I mean, heck, they aren't even old enough to live away from their parents. I doubt you'll get a single "refugee".

The Princeps of Dux encourages you to urge your citizen to the higher virtue of abstinence. He is well aware of the natural passions that call, not only the young, but most people to engage in sexual activity. That is well and good and not to be denied. However, the Princeps believes the use of contraception encourages sex outside of committed unions which tears apart at the fabric of society creating distrust and rivalry among its citizens. The control of these natural passions and desires are what distinguishes the noble from the weak. Sex is a wonderful thing, but it must be engaged in within the proper context - a committed relationship between two adults. Such a committed relationship is the key to the continuation and safeguarding of your society's traditions and valuables.

You say there are no virgins over 14? Are you proud of this fact? I urge you to reconsider your campaign, and think hard before your society becomes one driven by the lust to conquer other beings, which eventually becomes the lust to conquer other nations.

Callisdrun is mostly pagan, and does not adhere to the judeo-christian form of morality. We are a very sensual society. We see nothing wrong or embarassing about sex, and since teenagers are going to be doing it no matter how much one discourages it, they might as well know how to do it safely. Also, we find that, to the contrary, Callisdrunians generally do not lust to conquer others, only to have sex with them. Before the regional war we were dragged into, we had not fought another nation in 70 years, and that war was one of defense. Our citizens are generally quite content.

i'd rather promote abstinence :-/

In my experience, there isn't much that's more ineffective and naive than sex education that merely promotes abstinence. It would be nice if teens all abstained, but the fact is that they don't, never have, and never will. It's a fact of life.

Empire of HMV promotes abstenence but not in a forceful way, but actually persists on the use of contraseptives if at all. It is not to tell our children what and what not to do, but to teach them values and help them understand that these things will have a effect on their future. In the opinion of the government here, all that is really needed is morals and self respect held in each person of the Empire. We will not let these natural urges take hold of our people, we as a social community must learn that we humans have the mental stregnth to say no, and that we are becoming more evolved as we take more control over what we do. Teaching our children about control of themselves and teaching them how to promote their future is whats needed in a subject as this.

The President's view:
"Yes we teach basic sexual education, STDs, contreception and the like. Of course the religious factor is as follows:

Roman Catholic: 40%
Wiccan/Pagan: 35%
Athiest: 20%
Other: 5%

As you can see we have many Catholics... officially. They're all just horny bastards anyway. I of course am a virgin and I abstain, hell I never even got married. Now if you excuse me, I have a German Duke to kick out of my Villa..."

Sex is a wonderful thing, and it is even better that it is a natural urge - otherwise no one would it except when absolutely neccessary. However, as I have previously stated I believe that in order to preserve its goodness it must be exercised in the most meaningful way. This is not because we are Christians, but because we are humans. As such, the understanding of the Natural Law which binds all humans explains that treating others as objects is unfair to them. Sex is the ultimate giving of self. Thus, engaging in sex outside of a commited union is a lie because two people could have sex one night and the very next morning break up. Thus, each act of sex outside of a committed union is, in fact, a lie. Furthermore, if a sexual act results in the impregnation of a single woman it is the worst sort of abuse. A single mother is placed in a horrible situation in which it is very difficult to support her child and herself because for part of the pregnancy and the time following the birth she will be unable to employ herself, as well as during the infancy years of her child. Women in the Protectorate are highly respected, and thus any conception outside of a committed union is highly looked down upon. Our program of instruction is simple: we encourage virtue in all of our youths. At the discretion of the parents they are to be the primary instructors regarding sexuality. It is ridiculous to say that a person cannot live without sex, there are many who do, thus we believe it is the parent's prerogative to decide when their child should recieve instruction on the matter. Furthermore, we believe sexual education in a class room setting devoid of morality further encourages "exploration with one's classmates." Thus our program encorporates our understanding of human dignity into the sexual education. Do not misunderstand the aims of our program: the government does not deem illegal sexual activity. In fact we are the staunchest supporters of free will. However, the people of the Protectorate, because of their high respect of freedom, value it most when it is properly exercised out of respect for others and in agreeance with the good (human happiness).

Polygamous and polyamorous marriages (with all proper precautions taken, of course) are the norm in Andolai. Due to the carnal nature of our official welcoming ceremony, visitors to our land consider us to be an overly lustful people. This is far from the case. We are not any more or less prone to sexual desire than others, we simply have fewer qualms about expressing it.

Homosexuality and bisexuality are part of the tapestry of life, and our government is perfectly happy to promote any loving, committed relationship between any two or more people.
Callisdrun

Sexual morality is subjective. In Callisdrun, most couples live together for quite some time before marriage, and very few people are still virgins by the time they marry. Callisdrunians view marriage as a confirmation of a bond that already exists. However, very few children are born to unmarried parents and the divorce rate is low. Contraceptives are one of Callisdrun's biggest imports. Despite the climate, which some foreigners have called depressing, due to lack of sunlight (it's dark all winter and rains all summer), Callisdrun has a very romantic society. Called heathens by much of the world, Callisdrunians see nothing wrong with the way they live their lives. Sex is viewed as what one could call a personal, semi-spiritual way. The use of the term "f***ing" in reference to coitus is generally disapproved of, as the general feeling is that the term is too crass and casual for the act referred to. The term usually used to describe sex translates basically to "making love." In view of this, Callisdrunian sex education places major emphasis on the emotional implications of sex, as well as how to prevent some of the...less romantic consequences (STD's). Callisdrunian families have always been somewhat matriarchal, respect of women is a non-issue. Callisdrunians have held basically the same views on the subject for years upon years, although Callisdrunian society may have become somewhat more sensual since the introduction of more advanced contraceptives and STD protection.
