Community of Mafikeng ceases to exist!!!

Mafikeng
17-06-2004, 15:50
The Government of the Community of Mafikeng declared today that the country will cease to exist as of midnight tonight. Due to fierce demands for greater regional autonomy, it is widely believed that the relationship between the individual states and central government, which has been the source of lengthy negotiation over the past several months, will be changed substantially.

Exact details are sketchy but it is believed that the individual states will become Communities unto themselves, with a much wider control over local issues with a weaker central government with control merely over national and international issues. What is clear is the new name of the state. As of midnight, the new state will officially be referred to as the "United Communties of Mafikeng." Whether this weakening of central government will result in states withdrawing from the Union, time will tell.

Official Foreign Response from the Camewottian Government

To be honest, we are very concerned of this..
We have always had many trade affairs with the Community of Mafikeng, and there is even a small Mafikeng base in Camewot...
We would like to know what will happen with this military base and trade relations when the states are divided,

Have a nice day,

The Most Serene Republic of Notchriscon wishes Mafikeng luck in their new federal government. While we remain a strongly centralized government ourselves, we respect your right to reform your government.

If any of the new states of the United Communities of Mafikeng ever feel the need for a centralized government again and desire to secede from Mafikeng, they are of course welcome to join the Most Serene Republic of Notchriscon. We neither encourage nor discourage such actions by individual states, but felt that we should remind all states that other strong centralized governments are still out there, for those who miss them and desire less independence.

The Government staged a dramatic climbdown today in
the face of opposition from the military
establishment. Gen. Ludi Schwalz, Minister for Defence
and longtime opposer of decentralisation supported his
subordinates in the Ministry.

"It's not often I publicly disagree with the rest of
the Cabinet but I will not permit the disintegration
of my nation!"

Gen Schwalz is resisting the Prime Minister's demands
for his resignation. Gen. Schwalz is also believed to
enjoy wide support in the military and is feared that
any moves to get rid of him may lead to gulf opening
between the defence forces and their political
masters.

On the campaign trail, things have been hotting up,
with President Erin Bohan publicly supporting his
Cabinet while his oppostion for the elections, Mr.
Michael deMaf taking the side of the military. This
public support of the defence forces has led to a
dramatic ip in his support amongst the electorate, who
are widely believed to be in favour of
decentralisation.

Defence Forces are staging massive strikes and
confining themselves to barracks. In Camewot, the
Mafikeng garrison have refused to partake in joint
peace keeping duties until the Government stops the
plans to loosen central government at home.

This morning riots erupted across the Community as
protesters clashed with police. They are protesting
over what the believe to be a Government ploy of
outright lying over the decentralisation. One
protester is on record as saying:

"We expect decentralisation NOW!!! And we will resprt
to arms to achieve it."

All that is certain is that this will get worse before
it gets better.

(Excerpt from the Mafikeng News Network)

In what is being viewed as a sharp escalation of tension in Mafikeng, the President, Mr. Erin Bohan, has suspended the Senate. Theis suspension takes place just days before a vote of no confidence in the Government was to have taken place by Senators irate at the percived turnaround in the policy towards decentralisation. The President will now, according o his powers in the Constitution, rule by decree with the aid of the Cabinet, who will act as a miniature parliament with the power to block or introduce decrees of their own. These emergemcy measures will have to be renewed by the Senate every six months, so it is doubtful how long they will last.Mr. Bohan will address the nation later today by television and radio broadcast on the crisis in the nation.

In other news, the President has issued his first decre, Decree#1, which will delay the Presidential elections until such time as it is deemed that the atmosphere of the country is condusive to them. This has led to a massive slump in Mr. Bohan's commanding lead over his opponent Mr Michel deMaf, the heir to the throne of the former kingdom, abolished over 200 years ago.

The beleagured Government today issued a strong rebuke of "any and all nations" who may attempt to force individual states in this nation to secede from the Union".The rebuke went on to say that any continuence of this policy would be viewed "as the strongest possible attack on the national secuity of the Community and would be responded to in the strongest of terms".

The Defence Forces are still confining themselves to barracks as the dispute over decentralisation betwen the armed forces and Government continues. The Minister for Defence, Gen. Ludi Schwalz is still refusing to resign over his support of the military. It is wiely believed that the Prime Minister, Mr. Johnathan White, will ask the President to remove Gen. Schwalz. Prior to the suspension of Parliament, it would have been necessary to secure Senatorial approval fo such a measure.

In the provinces, anti-Government protesters lashed for the third day in a row with police. The protesters are demanding decentralisation. The state legislature in Mylonia, in the north of Mafikeng, has announced it will secede from the Union if the promised powers are not delivered by the Government. Under the decentalisation agrement, the national parliament in Port Mafikeng would merely have control over taxation, trade, foreign affairs, defence and other overarching national issues. In the capital of Mylonia, Port Rachel, Civil Defence and armed foces are refusing to enforce the will of the Government over th wildcard legislature. This failure to control the military is critically weakning the Cabinet and there are fears that the army may become unanswerable to them, leading to fears of further civil strife.

A transcript of the address from the President of the Communtiy of Mafikeng, His Excellency Mr. Erin Bohan.

My fellow citizens,

I address you on a matter of the gravest ugency. As you are no doubt aware, the military forces in the country are refusing to heed the will of your Government. The subordination of military to government is crucial to any democracy. The atmosphere of discord in Mafikeng is making the running of the country by your M.Ps and Ministers impossible. Now is not the time for debate. It is instead a time for action. Accordingly, acting within my constitutional powers, I have suspended the Senate and, with the aid of your Government, will rule by decree until such time as this crisis abates. I assure you these powers will not last one day longer than is explicitly necessary. Understandably, it would not be possible to hold elections with the country in the state it is in and so I have decreed that the Presidential elections will be delayed indefinately. These too will happen as soon as is possible.

Today I have furthered decreed that the Minster for Defence will no longer hold his seat in the Cabinet due to massive insubordination and failure to support Government measures. His support of the armed forces has severely added to the atmosphere of uncooperation in our military. To the armed forces I merely say this; You are required by law and by oath to serve this country, this Government and heed the orders of your superiors. As Commander-in-Chief, I am ordering you to fully comply with the orders of the Cabinet and especially your new Minister for Defence, as soon as he\she is appointed.

I assure you, men and women of Mafikeng, that it is still the plan of this Government to introduce decentralisation. And to the seperatists in the north, there will be no dismemberment of this nation. Any attempts will fail in the face of opposition from this Government.

I beseech you all to remain calm in these days of discord and confusion. I promise that I and your Government will do all that is humanly possible to resolve these crisises swiftly and peacefully.

OOC: lol, I doubt a State would secede from a country and get their independence only to throw it away and join another country. Which is a shame, cos otherwise I would have put out a similar message.....
