Edolian Broadcasting Corporation Special Report
June 11, 20??
--Between 1980 and 2000, the Edolian population grew by leaps and bounds. A massive influx of Chinese immigrants coupled with a upsurge in births caused the population to more than double in that period, expanding the nation’s already sprawling cities, and forcing stricter land-use policies. With the inauguration of Erik von Blätterschplitt in 2001 and the adoption of a communist constitution, Edölia’s rising population has crowded into the massive skyscrapers that make up the vast majority of the Empire’s enormous cities. Although most of the nation’s cities are still growing, experts estimate that geographical features will cause many of Edölia’s largest cities to reach their maximum extent within the next twenty years. This is requiring expansion. Although a number of new cities are being founded around the Edolian mainland, some political observers have suggested that plans be made for a mass migration into Edölia’s more distant provinces –Axackal and Yasmarea. With a relatively low population density, there is quite a bit of room for expansion. Although up until now, the government has been reluctant to expand into those provinces, respecting the concerns of the natives that they will become the minority in their own homeland, the current population growth crisis is causing many to rethink this policy. Currently up for vote in the Edolian parliament is a bill that will relocate some four hundred million Edolians from the mainland to the overseas provinces. While the relocation would cause few problems in Yasmarea, Axackal’s special economic zone status would raise issues, as to the economic rights of the new immigrants.—-
The report goes on to give a more detailed description of what a relocation would require. It also mentions that a second bill severely restricts immigration, imposing a maximum number of 500,000 immigrants into Edölia per year.
