Press Release; June 10, 20??
Edolian Ministry of Information
--In a series of private discussions, representatives from the Socialist Empire of Edölia, the Soviet Socialist Republic of Hattia and the Socialist Union of the Island States have agreed in principle to a policy of amalgamation. The proposed Union of Socialist Republics (USR) would group the three socialist nations into a tightly knit relationship. Many of the three nations’ legislative functions would be taken over by the Union’s parliament and discussions are underway as to the power of the executive and judicial branches of the Union government. Another important element of the amalgamation will come from the merging of the three separate economies to form the world’s single largest socialist economy* and will also encourage self-sufficiency within the Union, reducing reliance on outside trade.

Relations between Hattia, Edölia and the Island States have been growing steadily warmer over the course of the last few years and their mutual involvement in the United Alliance of Progressive States (UnAPS) has allowed them to work on building a closer friendship. The very similar economic and social policies of the three nations prompted the discussion over amalgamation –an idea that has widespread support in the governments and populations of the nations. Committed to liberal social policies, democracy and socialism, the USR would serve as a check to aggression from corrupt and imperialistic, capitalist regimes such as Allanea or Fluffywuffy.

Earlier today Edölia’s Imperätor Erik von Blätterschplitt met with President Newman of the Island States in private discussions regarding the nature of the Union (the Hattian head-of-state was out sick) and agreed in principle to a number of elements of the plan, including a parliament consisting of 100 members from each nation elected proportionally. Talks are still underway regarding the nature of the proposed Union constitution, as well as the admission of other member states. Coming out of the talks, the Islander President Newman said:
"This 'Union of Socialist Republics' will guarantee the safety of the peoples of Edölia, Hattia and The Island States. It will guarantee our economic safety, but most importantly, the safety of our combined sovereignty."

More talks will continue over the course of the next few months.--

*OOC: If that’s not true, don’t jump on my back about it. I would be interested in knowing of larger ones though.

Basically, the three of us agreed that since our countries are so similar, it would make sense for us to “merge” them. Since it’s really impossible OOC to “merge” three nations controlled by three separate players who do not know each other personally, we are trying to do something that would come as close as possible to full amalgamation. You might want to think of the USR as a super-EU.

I spoke for TIS in this post with his permission.

I should make it clear that this isn’t an alliance and we’re not recruiting. If your nation would be IC interested in joining this Union, please make a statement here. We would ask that you be a good roleplayer and reasonably respected on the boards. IC, we’d have a lengthy review process, as well as a trial-period of closer relations.>>

The Republic of Tiborita would like to express to its allies our great hope we have in the success of this venture. May the sum benifits of your collective effort outweigh the benifits of each of your nations individualism.

Official Announcement of The Allanean Government

We are surprised at this action by Hattia and TIS. Why would anybody want to merge their nation with an oppressive tyranny like Edolia?

Further, we would like to thank the Edolian government for calling us corrupt. It has caused brief moments of levity.

Official Announcement of The Allanean National Rifle Association

We are extremely concerned over the negative impact this might have on the rights of TIS and Hattia citizens.

"We find the claims made by the Allanean government of Edolian tyranny to be ludicrous and unfounded. Edolia is not the nation that has a history of launching unprovoked strikes with weapons of mass destruction, nor are we the ones who have been known to invade nations on little pretense (or none at all). Furthermore, to address the concerns of the World Rifle Association, national gun laws have not been an issue in discussions, and it is expected that they will remain a non-issue. We in Edolia respect the Hattian's lax gun laws, as they respect our tighter gun control methods."

Kasparov was expecting this news to come out sometime soon, for he had been planning entry into the Union before showing his true colors, and backed out several weeks ago after signing KIST, a treaty which embraced free and fair trade among more centrist and capitalist nations. Therefore, when he watched the evening news, he was not at all surprised, though was a little rattled by the fact that none of the leaders of the three countries had contacted him. He began typing away, the clicking of the keyboard rather loud in his very quiet office.

Letter to the international community:

I must congratulate Edolia, Hattia, and The Island States on their recent feat of history, accomplishing the beginnings of a Union that I have not seen in history, where three fully sovereign nations have joined together under one banner in the name of stability and ideals they hold dear. No alliance can match the sacrifice and dedication that the three Lietuv allies have shown on this evening, and I personally send my hope that this Union will thrive. Though the Lietuv people may soon boot me from office over a great scandal, I must say that if I shall continue to remain in my position, our economic differences will not be an issue in the matters of friendship. May luck be with Edolia, Hattia, and The Island States.

The Knootian government send out rather obligatory congratulations to the office of the Union of Socialist Republics. The usual words about the Dutch Democratic Republic welcoming international cooperation. A message from the foreign ministry detailed ‘hope for continued positive relations’ and ‘the hope that this coming together could help to tighten relations and bring stability to the Haven continent’

Politicians made care not to say anything bad about the nations in public, but the political analysts sketched a different picture. Firstly, Hattia would fall more under Edölian and TIS influence. Both these nations – former UnAPS allies - were not regarded as enemies but rather as competitors with a geostrategic interest in Haven that was decidedly different from the Knootians ideal of a liberal, peaceful continent.
Secondly, and more worryingly, it was a sign that the United Alliance of Progressive States was falling apart. If subgroups were beginning to form, it would weaken the whole. And a weak and uncoordinated UnAPS would be an invitation for Allanean ambition…

To the contrary...

A Union in this manner would strengthen our military might and improve the economies of all three nations. Also, an attack on one part is an attack on all, requiring no direct call to action by the Alliance to prevent us from aiding each other immediately.

((OOC:
This is the Knootian analysis, and it is NOT public. Publicly we say that it will 'help to tighten relations and bring stability to the Haven continent’

It is also not the security of the member nations we are concerned with, but the integration of UnAPS as a whole. Think about the ideas of a 'multi-speed Europe' if you know what I am talking about. This would give your nations an 'ideological' meeting club separate from the main body.))

"We here in Fluffywuffy actualy applaud efforts by Edolia, The Island States, and Hattia to form a socialist state, unless the people of the three states are opposed to the ideal; we value democracy above all things, while this may not reflect our standings on socialism, if the people want socialism, let them have it. But, if united by a common ideal to form a union, people unite democratically, regardless of those uniting, we, with our democratic tendancies, have to apluad them."

The Prime Minister has recovered from the nasty case of the flu which kept him from attending the talks. He thankss the various nations which have congratulated us and will be able to attend further talks and contribute to the joint constitution.
