Al Khals

The Al Khali Republican Guard is the most elite part of the nation’s military machine. While the new Arab Republic’s over-all military doctrine calls for a large and rapid advance against any foe –so as to deny the enemy such a luxury over the nation's strategically vital oil fields, some of which are near the borders- the RG’s role is less involved in holding ground than in causing disruption ahead of the modestly equipped regular army.
Over all commander of the Republican Guard is President Omar Qottar.
The divisions are two fold; Armoured Divisions and Infantry Divisions; both being considered mechanised, unlike regular army infantry divisions (though the army does also have some mechanised divisions).
Republican Guard Armoured Divisions are comprised of 1 Mechanised Infantry Regiment, 1 Armoured Regiment, and 1 Artillery Brigade.
Republican Guard Infantry Divisions are of 2 Mechanised Infantry Regiments and 1 Artillery Brigade.
There are four Armoured Divisions and six Infantry Divisions in the Republican Guard.
Below is an example of an Al Khali Republican Guard Armoured Division.
On the day of victory no man is tired!
1st Tkrat Division, “Habob Division”-
Field Commander: Fariq (Lt.Gen.) Abdelaziz Mahamat (usually a Liwa (Major-General) would be expected, but the Habob Division is apparently a flagship formation for the Al Khali armed forces).
1st Tkrat Mechanised Infantry Regiment-
Organised into 3 Mechanised Infantry Brigades each under an Amid (Brigadier-General), with each Brigade consisting of;
3 Mechanised Infantry Battalions each under an Aquid (Colonel) and consisting of;
4 Mechanised Infantry Companies each under a Ra’id (Major) and consisting of;
3 Platoons each under a Naquib (Captain) and consisting of;
5 Squads each under a Mulazim (Lieutenant) and consisting of ten Mechanised Infantrymen, officer and NCOs included.
The smallest unit, a Squad, consists of 10 men, the next, a Platoon, of 50, then a Company of 150, a Battalion of 600, and a Brigade of 1,800, three of which comprise a Regiment of 5,400 men in all.
The following vehicles provide a Mechanised Infantry Regiment with its mobility and armoured punch: 90 Khali Infantry Fighting Vehicles, 108 BMP-2, 120 assorted MT-LB multi-purpose tracked vehicles, 12 UAZs, 350 assorted trucks mainly ZiL-131, 18 SA-6 Gainful SAM SPU launchers and associated radar vehicles (3 batteries), 18 SA-13 Gopher SAM vehicles, 24 ZSU-57-2 SPAAAGs.
1st Tkrat Armoured Regiment-
Organised into 3 Armoured Brigades, each under an Amid (Brigadier-General) and an Engineering Bridging Unit under an Aquid (Colonel).
A complete Armoured Regiment has the following vehicles: 60 M1A2-AK Al Khali Abrams, 78 PT76B light amphibious tanks, 72 Vickers MBT, 9 M48 Mine Clearing Tanks, 18 Vickers Armoured Vehicle-Launched Bridges, 24 Vickers Mk3 Armoured Recovery Vehicles, 30 assorted MT-LB multi-purpose tracked vehicles, 12 UAZ, 270 assorted soft-skin trucks mainly ZiL-131, 24 ZSU-57-2, 18 SA-6 Gainful SAM SPU launchers and associated radar vehicles (3 batteries), 12 SA-13 Gopher SAM vehicles.
1st Tkrat Artillery Brigade-
22xQottar 122mm SPAG, 28xSO-120 SPH/Mortar 2S9, 30xL1 100mm Towed Anti-Tank Guns, 20x76.2mm Towed Artillery Guns, 18xOmar 122mm Towed Artillery Guns, 20x120mm Towed Mortars, 70xMT-LB multi-purpose tracked vehicles, 40xZiL-131 soft-skin trucks, 2 UAZ.
Basic composition is the same for all four Armoured Divisions, and in Infantry Divisions exchanges the Armoured Regiment for a second Mechanised Infantry Regiment.
Broad tactical over-view-
Al Khals is a large, oil-rich Arab-dominated republic in the Middle East. The recent Arab Socialist revolution, lead by the self-proclaimed President, Omar Qottar, has caused some friction with foreign nations, especially capitalist states with investments in the prior Sultanate.
Al Khals is a largely desert nation criss-crossed by several large rivers and innumerable canals around which population, agriculture, and industry are all centred. Many of these canals, and several strategic petrochemical resources, are found near the borders. In the case of the canals this was presumably to facilitate trade in ancient times, but today it means that Al Khals stands to lose much in the event of invasion. As such, military doctrine calls for an all-out offensive against an enemy so as to contain fighting to the extreme fringes or, ideally, push it into a neighbouring state and protect the Arab Republic's vital population and resource centres.
The prevalence of rivers and ancient canals inside Al Khals makes river-crossing ability important to the armed forces. Artillery is considered important in maintaining defensive lines set-up along waterways and disrupting enemy fording attempts.
(So then, I know very little of the modern martial world, and as such most of this is improvised by my completely amature military mind. Al KHals doesn't expect its military to exactly follow anybody else's, but I'd appreciate any feedback on huge errors. Other than that feel free to comment or question.)
