Governor Tyron's office was a mess. Servant's were hustling about putting away his things into boxes, and he was trying to put all his paperwork into the correct folders. He looked up as a servant removed a light sculpture from a wall inset, "Do be careful with that, it's been in the family for three generations."
Elsewhere on the world, the withdrawl was proceeding more orderly. Tanks drove up ramps onto dropships to take them to orbiting troop transports, and computers and other sensitive equipment in command centers scattered across the planet were being disconnected and packaged.
Meanwhile, the two fortresses guarding the subspace node were silent, with no remarkable activities about them. Switches were flipped, buttons were pressed, coordinates entered into navigation computers, and reactor power peaked. They brought up their Takan designed fold drives and simply disappeared from the system.
A few hours later, after almost every soldier and vehicle had been delivered to the waiting transports, one final ceremony took place in front of the Governor's Palace.
One hundred soldiers of the People's Army stood at attention in parade formation on either side of a flag pole. They were wearing their dress uniforms, reminiscent of British colonial uniforms from the Age of Imperialism (khaki with pith helmets). The governor and his staff stood on the steps of the palace with a Takan representative. The soldiers saluted as the Verniian flag was slowly pulled down and expertly folded, then placed in a wooden box with the national emblem stamped on it. The Takan flag was then run up, and the governor turned and shook hands with the Takan representative.
The soldiers turned and marched to waiting assault shuttles, then silently rising and taking off into the sky. Tyron took one last look around, and turned to Lt. Governor Kinkaid. "I do believe I might miss this place." he said. Together they walked toward a waiting pinnace, the last to leave the planet.
A few hours later, the Verniian fleet swept across the hyper limit and vanished into hyperspace. The withdraw was complete.
