New Eden

"Well... We`re going to intervene... Elsewhere."

"I know." Metatron looked out of the window, over the vast gardens, the flowers... Back, at the horizon, the fires of the industry could be seen, diametrical opposite to the beauty in front of his window.

"I know... But we have had relations with United Indiastan. I guess it is time to act. Even if it is just a small contingent... The Cherubim want it, donĀ“t they?" He looked around, directly into Uriels eyes. He had replaced Michael, while the fleet moved towards their other target.

"Well... Yes."

"So be it."

Auli Consuli, Syskeyiapolis

President and First Consul Benedict Michael Sukothai could hardly believe what he saw on television? Atrocities? Hate? Human rights violations? Religious intolerance? Sure, we've outlawed Satanism and don't let the SSPX run around (not to mention the Coo-Coo Cola Cult) but besides that, you can believe what you want. Guess SeOCC has their ear, I guess.

Soon, preparations were made. Vincent F. Chalermchai, Strategos Strategon of the Syskeyian armed forces, began drawing up plans in case it came to war. In the meantime, Consul Francis L. Ghanikhan was to negotiate with the United Indiastan diplomats.

All the while a single thought passed throgh everyone's mind.
If you hope for peace, prepare for war.

God bless,

A short, undefinably ugly man scowls mightily as he reads over the report. He glances up at Ben Vitner, who sits calmly in his seat on the far side of the desk.

"What the hell is Desai playing at, with that speech?"

Ben shrugs eloquently. "I think he's thinking he can leverage our 'transgressions' against him to break the rules outright."

Treznor grits his teeth and brings up another document. "And they've already started mobilising. Anybody else getting caught up in this?"

"We got some whispers through the Dominion, so we're double-checking with our own people. So far, we haven't been able to confirm or deny anyone. If anyone else is in on it, they're playing it pretty close to the chest."

"Son of a bitch. That idiot. I bend the rules behind the scenes, so he uses it to justify breaking them outright? Fine, we'll give him enough rope to hang himself. Lock this down; no leaks. So far as the rest of the alliance is concerned, this is an independent action. The moment he puts his foot over the line, I'll break it off and feed it to him. Until then, I'll grant him leniency for the sake of our past 'transgressions.'"

"Understood."

"Just what I need. How vulnerable are we here?"

"Technically, it's our word against his. And since it wasn't even our idea in the first place, we have some pretty substantial support to back our position."

"Right. We'll get Alex to start some spin on this. I swear, you'd think international leaders would have more subtlety than your average schoolyard bully."

Having nothing to say to that, Ben quietly slips out the door to leave his Emperor to his thoughts.

My ally, your latest move seems somewhat ill-considered. The Republic of Syskeyia may be a pit of fundimentalism and democracy, but for all that it is an essentially harmless one, much like the rats which are it's national animal - plague-ridden and dirty, but violent only if one should push it into a corner.

And that, it seems, is what you are about to do, with possibly disastrous consequences for two worlds and the Alliance of which you are a member - the Alliance, I might note, whose rules you now break with scant respect for form.

We all have a responsibility to avoid war here on Earth, and also for we who have Martian territories to avoid war on Mars, which has already seen too many wars. And we have responsibilities as members of the Non-Democratic Alliance to obey it's regulations, and begin no wars.

In the end, you will do as you see fit, as do we all. I can but hope that you will see fit to bring your Chancellor under control, and call off the dogs of war.

The crowds numbered in the thousands. "Death to Syskeyia! Death to foreign pigs!" they chanted. All around the square before Parliment, and down the street for blocks, the massive crowd held it's protest. Signs innumerable, covered with all kinds of colourfull slogans waved above the crowd, along with a large collection of Indiastani flags. A podium was erected on the stairs, and it was rumoured that the Chancellor himself would come and address the mob. The cause supported by so many was an international intervention in Syskeyia, a nation who's tales of atrocities against human rights were only being to surface. In outrage, they poured onto the street, demanding that the pigs in Syskyiapolis be brought to justice. That they seemed to advocate that the justice be that of the noose worked all the better for the Empire. Already envoys had been sent abroad to bring together a coalition that would bring about the destruction of the enemy of the hour. To maintain appearences, an ambassador had been sent to Syskeyia to negotiate a peaceful regime change, along with a temporary foreign security force that would work to further the causes of freedom and liberty amongst the oppressed people, as well as attempt to uncover the full extent of the current regime's evil deeds. The Empress hoped that they'd just surrender, but one could never be too sure with those religious nut-crackers. The forces needed for such an operation were already in motion, quietly reserve divisions reported to the national armouries, a few more ships of the navy put to sea, and the Stellar Navy was slowly stepping up patrols as more ships slipped back to Earth. On Mars, the bomber wings were preparing for strikes, though it was hoped that the forces of NY&J already in the province could be negotiated with to support the cause. The last thing anyone wanted was another war with the New Yorkers. The board was set, and now it was time for the other side to move - if they even knew they were supposed to was another matter entirely.

As Chancellor Desai took the stage, the crowd fell silent. This was quite the feat, considering that there were people so far away they couldnt' make him out through the throng.

"People of Indiastan! As we speak, there are atrocities against nature and our fellow man that we cannot tolerate! You all hold your rights dear - we all do. To live free of persecution, free of religious intolerence, free of hate. We enjoy these freedoms... the people of Syskeyia do not! They are the oppressed! The downtrodden! Who will free them from their bondage, if not those who know what it is to be free? We must act accordingly, and free our brothers in Syskeyia! Our cause is just - we MUST see it through! Already we have sent diplomats to Syskeyia, to see if the craven dogs have the will to withstand us. Soon we may call upon you to defend your rights and freedoms from those who would take them away, and replace them with bigotry and jackbooted repression! Will you answer the call?"

The very ground seemed to shake as the assembeled crowed shouted 'YES!' "Good," Desai thought, "They're playing along nicely. But the foreigners... they'll be harder to convince."

Jarrod Khelm arrived just after sunset, along with his small staff, in order to avoid the worst of public attentions. He wasn't sure where the negotiations were to be held, but there was a limo with a police escort waiting for them, so that would have to do. He was hoping the Syskeyians wouldn't be as rabid as he'd heard they could be.
