The Xanthalian Council announced today that it would consider a motion by the Minister of Social Affairs to close Xanthal's economic borders for good, forbidding international trade not directly approved by the highest levels of the Xanthalian government. "We can isolate our economy without isolating our nation," said the Minister in his preposition speech. "The Socialist Republic has lost its trading partners. Trust has been lost on all sides. It is best if we take the opportunity to return our economy to an isolated, self-perpetuating state."
Despite significant support for the bill in the Council, the Triumvirate has issued statements that "the Socialist Republic is unlikely to shut down trade while alternatives are still being pursued." Whether or not this will prove true, only time will tell. This is XNN.

"Well you could do what we did, have your totalitarian government (in our case it was an Imperial Dynasty) overthrown in a bloody two decade long revolution that kills over 25 million people, then set up between the states a very weak "national" government that creates a small number of Common Laws that the states abide by and managed forigen affairs and leave all the rest of the power between the states. It's worked out quite well so far but there is room for improvement."

The fact the the Socialist Republic is a peaceful and productive democracy aside, how in the name of the Universe would anything you just suggested help our economy or trade relations?

Well concidering the Zerni are free marketists, they would never ban trade with anyone even to save themselves, thats one trading partner you don't have to worry about and Fully an third of Tirah's exports go to Xanthal and half Tirahs imports are from Xanthal, you don't have to worry about some of them stopping trading. If we stopped trading with Xanthal or Xanthal stopped trading with us, Tirah's economy would fall into depression at best and be in shambles. Trust or no trust Tirah has to trade with Xanthal.

The Council and Triumvirate have agreed that Xanthal should pursue a policy of approved trading partners. The following nations have been preapproved as Xanthalian trading partners, all others must obtain a license from a special committee

Ambassador Jerraus set his small hat down on his desk. Another day... another diplomatic bother. He so loved his job. The small holopad on his desk shone with the common luminescent blue he had grown so used to after twenty-seven years of faithful, diligent service to his homeland.

In 72 point, Arial Black, bold font, the first dilemma he was to deal with simply was,
XANTHALIAN ECONOMIC ISOLATION

He blinked. This... was a topic not anew to him. Wormia... had of course, been itself, fairly recently in a two century total isolation. He sat at his chair, flexed his fingers, and typed a reply.

"It is the opinion of my country that isolation serves its purpose. Following our fifth and most devastating war, the Wormian people banded together and isolated themselves completely from the rest of society. Within that time, we were able to allocate resources and people to reconstructing infrastructure and civilization altogether."

"Alas, we cannot deem that which will guide your nation best from here. This is what your people have chosen for you to do, and thus, they have entrusted you to make these decisions. Such is the true meaning of politics... though, frequently bad examples of our kind taint the reputation."
