F.S. Proteus Launched

Feline
04-06-2004, 03:53
The Proteus crew, and its captain, Kimberly Govga, climbed into it. The Proteus was undoubtedly the most advanced submarine in the world. The bottle was broken against the side, and it set sail for its shakedown cruise, in the Northern Haven Straits.

Proteus Class Information

Introduction
Proteus. The “Old Man of the Sea.” This omniscient, yet secretive Greek deity guards his knowledge by changing his form to whatever he wished.

Proteus. The next generation in attack submarines for the Cat navy. This intelligence-oriented, almost absolutely quiet naval ship guards her nation by changing its sonar signature to whatever it wishes.

The most Low Observable boat ever.
The Variable Sonar Signature (V.S.S.) is the technology that makes this all possible. Developed by Dr. Archibald X. Davies of the Democratic Arcologies of Feline, V.S.S. uses a classified means to grab sound waves selectively, allowing it to select sonar signatures, and suck them into the V.S.S. bay located in the middle of the ship. It then uses sound waves and jets of air and water to alter the signature, allowing it to tell the enemy that it is something else- from a friendly ship to an aquatic animal, to in the right water conditions, nothing but water. In addition to the V.S.S., it is built out a mix of carbon nanotubes, titanium, and other non-magnetic yet strong materials to prevent detection by magnetomers. It also features absolutely quiet designs of waterjet engines. The only sound emitted is any noise the crew makes inside. The water from these engines cycles around all systems before going out the back, rendering it almost undetectable by its heat signature.

Advanced centrally controlled weaponry
Dispensing with the separate, manually operated torpedo rooms and their large crews, the three torpedo tubes are centrally controlled from the bridge. Each tube has a magazine of torpedoes that reloads quickly, allowing for rapid-fire spreads of torpedoes. Press a button, the pressurized launch bay opens. A rod shoves the torpedo out through the wall of air pressure that stops the cabin from flooding. The propeller activates as soon as it is in the water. These advanced torpedoes, replacing normal explosives with plasma charges, and able to guide themselves, or be guided by a crewmember on the bridge, to the target, are the best torpedoes in the water. It also has a railgun that extends out of the hull that fires plasma shells, bombarding enemy targets when it is serving on the surface. Lastly, it has two pop-out laser emitters that can be use to cut apart slow-moving enemy submarines at very close range- limited use, but when you can use it, deadly effective..

Power plants that are quiet, safe, and powerful.
Replacing traditional diesel-electric and nuclear powerplants is a quantum reactor. Quantum reactors (OOC: Not the quantum nucleonic fusion reactors, this is a purely IC technology) leech out the forces holding atoms together and use these forces to spin small turbines at a high speed to generate electricity. With no radiation, no risk of meltdown, and the ability to use any matter (although some elements work better than others) to generate power slightly more than that of a nuclear reactor, quantum reactors are ideal to power submarines.

Unparalled Combat Sensor and Scientific Capabilities
A wide variety of combat and scientific sensors are aboard the Proteus. It has a scientific sensor suite that would make any oceanographer drool. In addition, it has a small bay where it stores equipment for divers and a small scientific research minisub. In addition to this, the tactical sensors are the best known, able to detect any hostile ship before it detects the Proteus. The highlight of its sensor suite is Quantum Pingers. These devices send out a slew of subatomic particles jacketed in a magnetic field. Once it hits a target previously found by sonar, packets are fired out the array. Based on how they bounce off and how they interact with the object, very detailed information can be ascertained.

Spectacular Crew Amenities.
The crew of sixty live in the lap of luxury for a submarine design. Each crewmember has his own 3.5 square meter quarters, which feature a bed, a small table, a computer terminal, a video display screen, a mini-fridge, and a storage closet. A full exercise room is included for the crew. The ship’s galley can prepare a wide variety of food with an advanced FP-33.03 Feline designed food processing unit. The mess hall has a large video screen. The ship’s databanks store hundreds of movies. You can easily replace them or delete them if you want.
A small library, stocked extensively with e-books and with a selection of actual books. The same information applies here as it does with the movies. All chairs are padded, and most areas are carpeted. A full sickbay with the most advanced medical technology available is installed.
