Hey every body, I was adding to my storefront when a thought occoured to me, Wouldn't it be cool if a bunch of future tech nations kicked in a fighter and their best pilot and engaged in one on one dogfighting with others? using non-lethal sort of weapons (Light beams and so on) Would there be any interest in this?

Sure. I could use a manned fighter, there are still a few left over manned by the best-of-the-best hotshots. Most are piloted by AIs now. Xanthalian Slipfighters are sweet little machines, but they can take three hits at best, usually only two.

I'll probably join, but I've got to fix up the pic. I'm not too happy with the one of the fighter I plan to use.

Okay! Without further ado, I offer you the most advanced prototype fighter in the entirety of my nation:

The "Guardian" is a highly expensive prototype space fighter designed to dominate the fighter scene. Featuring the best features of the Supernova and Vengeance designs of corvette and battleship respectively, the "Guardian" is meant to be given to elite CF aces, a craft fitting of their skills.

SA-32A Mitchell-Hyundyne Thunderbolt Class, is a two-seat fighter craft utilized by the Fenwickian Royal Airforce for short/medium range defense operations. The SA-32A is the only Starfury that can fly in atmosphere as well as space. Thunderbolts are larger than the old Aurora Starfury at 15.54 meters (51 feet) long from nose to tail, 18.7 meters (61.35 feet) from side to side air foils extended and 6.96 meters (22.83 feet) from top to bottom.

Thunderbolts are armed with four Walter 40mm unidirectional plasma Pulse Cannons, with a power output of "35" megawatts (35 million watts) per. bolt, and an estimated maximum range of some 15,000 meters. The SA-32 Starfury can also be armed with ten external hard points for addition weapons and missiles and also has a particle/laser weapon built into its system. Unfortunately, due to the massive power drain accompanied by firing the particle/laser, combined with the long recharge time (15 seconds), it is not used unless absolutely necessary.

Unlike older models, Thunderbolt pilots sit in the same position as in classic fighter planes. The fighter is operated by a combination of hand, foot, eye and voice-activated controls just like the SA-23s, but the controls on the Thunderbolts are far more sensitive than those on the old Aurora.

the point of these excercises is to engage in spacial dogfighting, rather than having the light beams act as a "kill" shot, the object will be to target your opponent with a heavy weapon (torpedo, missle etc) light weapons will count for points, and if neither pilot has scored a kill by the end of the round then the pilot with the most hits will be declared the winner

Jitano: Nice choice of rules. Those are the ideal conditions for a Slipfighter battle. The Slipfighter class can dodge a torpedo or missile easily, and with its cluster missile armament, it is almost impossible for it to completely miss a target with a full spread. Its rapid-fire disrupter banks will rack up lots of hits, too.

I think I can simulate that. It doesn't change the fact that the enemy will have to lose ten missile lock-ons instead of one. A Slipfighter operates by "telling" the missiles what to target. Once fired the missiles track the objective on their own. This is the key to the Slipfighter's success. The ship itself doesn't need a lock on the target to fire the missiles.

Right. The weakness of the system is that, if the enemy is skilled enough (which considering the nature of this excercise I assume they will be), they can maneuver out of the "primary targeting area". Every missile fired has a limited radius tracking ability, and they all converge in a cone-shaped area about twenty degrees wide extending from the front of the fighter. If the target can slip out of the PTA in the second or so between the time the missiles are fired and the time they split into their cluster components not all the missiles will be able to "find" what they're targeting. This tactic is a double edged sword though, as missiles that cannot find their targets will "wander" using minimum fuel until either they find the target or run out of fuel. This can make for a later unexpected "surprise" for the enemy pilot.

I think what I'll end up doing is replacing the missiles with targeting probes on the fighter I use. That way the targeting rule will still work and no damage will be risked to any of the ships.

2nd: What will be the overall structure and organization of this Top Gun?

The Legionnaire is a simple, cheap fighter that wins through numbers. Little more than an engine, control stick, and two rotary cannons, the Legionnaire is nevertheless easy to fly and quite nimble in the hands of a capable pilot. Lacking any sort of real armor, Legionnaires must rely on their speed and maneuverability to avoid enemy fire. However, when employed in large enough numbers the sheer amount of munitions being thrown against a target can overcome most basic ship armor.

The Atlan is a good sturdy design that warriors of both the Jaguar and Condor caste are proud to pilot, its service record showing much glory, and when death does come to the pilots, it is usually quick and full of honour. It does have a downside in that its hardest hitting weapon, the M.A.H.E. is quite short range for its type, that and its low re ward visability.
The example here carries the battle plumes of the Rexul-Cha City State, from where the pilot Poca-Chaq-mul hails from, great sacrifices to he Sun God have been made, in anticipation of his victory.

I'll use the fighter in this thread. I only suggested the mobile suit because my fighters are well...they aren't the greatest out there. Probably because their built by the lowest bidder.

The Super Acolyte heavy fighter. The Super Acolyte is LRR's oldest continuously serving ship type. All attempts to replace it entirely have failed, either because of reliability problems, lack of armor, or general performance bugs not found in the good old Acolyte. The acolyte is a true beast, at least twice the size of most starfighters, and with speed to match. Its armerment of two heavy ion cannons will blow most other craft away in the first shot. The only problem is the low rate of fire, where it takes a skilled pilot to score a first-shot kill. It is used to escort Thunderbolt bombers into combat, and to supplement Vengance squadrons at bases and installations. They are being looked at for farad system conversion. The newest standard design template version of the Acolyte is the IIX, which has higher external stores capacity as well as more powerful ion cannons, a larger engine, and a light anti-torpedo plasma cannon which is mounted above the engine block. The most radical departure from the regular Super Acolyte II design template is the Super Acolyte IV, a light corvette/gunship with planetary capability. Its relatively high production cost has kept it from replacing the IIX. The only problem that the Super Acolyte faces is its somewhat sluggish manouverability. However, this is offset by its high firepower and speed, and this problem has been mostly fixed by the addition of larger manouvering thrusters.

While it can turn reasonably well, let's face it- in a one-on-one battle with one of those little fighters that people build millions of, the Acolyte's just not going to manouver as well. What it does with massive application of thrusters, it might do it with a flick of a control stick.

Of course, little rotary cannons won't do too much to a Super Acolyte for several runs. Their main advantage is their armor and firepower. They can survive longer and do (generally) more damage. And they can manouver well enough to decently dodge missiles and such.

Joe shrugged, while continuing to walk about the smooth fighter, admiring its curves, accented by the black and red paint scheme it had recently recieved, "Well, it was either this fighter competition or a month of transport escort...in Saturnspace."
"And this is punishment for your little stunt the other weekend?" Mark glared at Joe, running a hand along the fighter as he trailed behind Iosif, "You damn near wrecked Maxine."
"Yeah, best punishment ever, " Joe looked over his shoulder and grinned, "bah, I kept her in one piece."

The two continued their walk around inspection as they had done many times before, checking to see everything was in order.
"Why do you want me? I'm just some old codger"
"Cuz Mark, you're the best damn mechanic I know. Besides, you've always worked on Maxine for me, even when the other senior mechanics thought me insane."
"True, that last part at least," Mark pauses, "So why the hell was this even an option? Most of these nations aren't even on formal relations with the Trium, hell I've ne'er even heard of half of 'em"
"I'm not sure. Brass probably wants to spread our good name without sending delegations and such."

Mark frowned at this, "I hate diplocrap, can't do it. That's why I'm a mechanic."
Joe chuckled, running his hand through his short brown hair. "Don't look at me, I'm no diplomat either. Tried it once, pissed of one of the most powerful ladies in the Trium."
"Ole' Siri?"
"Ha, I wish. I would have welcomed a fleet of Gravships."

Mark's frown goes away, replaced with a quizical look. "Anyways...How are we getting there."
"A Loki will be dropping us off in a Cargo MAM Pod. You'll have enough space and equipment to do maintainance, with space for living quarters as well."
"Christ Joe, we could practically manufacture our own damn wing of fighters with that much equipment."
"Yeah, I thought it was a bit much, but apparently their devoting a large portion to the living quarters, some fancy stuff too. Brass figured some top national figures may want to watch, so it'll also serve as their box seating."
"Oh. What about us, what will our quarters look like?"
"Luxury suites all around."

Mark frowned a little again, thinking of how the space would be better used. Joe noted the smile and made a little jab at the Scolopendraen.
"Don't worry Mark, I'm sure we'll find a closet for you to sleep in."
"That's low Joe."
"I know Mark, couldn't resist."
Mark shook his head, "How about some food?"
"Sure thing Mark, my treat. To make up for the whole closet thing"

Description: Dren comes from a long line of servicemen. His great-grandfather fought as Baad Skeelzot's flag bearer during the Conquest of Solomon, and his uncle defended Azuk II against a gnomish attack in 2138. Dren is your typical Skeelzanian warrior, which is to say aggressive, prone to rage, and normally none to bright. Luckily for Taegar, the goverment often has its best troops under go genetic therapy to increase their abilities. This has allowed Dren to achieve a level of cunning rarely seen amongst his comrades.

Unlike his forefathers, Taegar chose not to be a ground pounder. Signing up for the new Fighter Corps right out of high-school, he showed natrual strength in the pell-mell dogfights favored by Skeelzanians, eventually graduating as third in his class. He first served as a patrol pilot on the southern border, being invovled in numerous skirmishes against the Far Tortugans. As he advanced in rank, he was moved up to the Assault Cruisers, and was able to serve during the Black Star Incident. He is credited with destroying 36 enemy fighters, one gunship and a fleeing transport during the recent unrest on Solomon.

Those who have served under him describe him as a good pilot, but prone to anger, even by Skeelzanian standards. He was reprimanded three years ago for ejecting a insubordinate cadet out of an airlock, though no serious action was taken against him.

Edit: Bumped up the pilots weight. Skeelzanians have very big frames and good muscle mass, and 200 pounds would look downright skinny on a 6'6" frame.

The Socialist Republic is announcing a slight change in its contest entry. The Slipfighter entered will be a new prototype, equipped with Type II shields. This will be its first combat simulation, and will be used to test its performance.

Skeelzania, taking a page from Xanthal's book, has also announced a change in entry. In place of the Legionnaire fighter (good for large attacks, unsuitable for ace pilots), we wish to enter the new Centurion heavy fighter. Only twenty of these craft have been produced (3 being lost during an spaceshow accident), and have seen no combat. Of course, if the contest judges deny our request to change our entry, we will retain the Legionnaire as our representative fighter.

This fighter was designed as a successor to the Legionnaire, packing a bigger punch without sacrificing the maneuverability of the smaller fighter. Solomon engineers achieved this by mounting a gauss gun on the right side of the fuselage. Unfortunately, this rather heavy chunk of weaponry sits a good deal away from the center of gravity, resulting in some unusual flight tendencies. In the hands of an inexperienced pilot, the Centurion has a tendency to go spinning out of control during rolls. Hey every body, I was adding to my storefront when a thought occoured to me, Wouldn't it be cool if a bunch of future tech nations kicked in a fighter and their best pilot and engaged in one on one dogfighting with others? using non-lethal sort of weapons (Light beams and so on) Would there be any interest in this?

I believe we are supposed to have only one craft entered. Just like in the Top Gun movie. We are to send our best craft and pilot.

I have seen the series almost in it's entirity when it was first broadcast but since I started on earth, I cannot design and develop the type of craft the Vorlons used since they are from a gas giant.

The vorlon fighter looks to be a massively overpowered fighter but here it is handicapped by the required replacement of it's weapons with a simple targeting laser.

We all have the same weapons system and we are trying to maintain a 5 second targeting lock in order to get a "kill". The hull armor will not protect you from the target lock. Your only advantage is the manuverability of the fighter.

Since the weapons of the craft is not to be taken into account, the defences, manuverability, and pilot skill will count the most for everyone who gets to play.

Who do we have in the contest so far? I have not found out if my entry has been accepted even tho I was the fourth nation to reply. I just had to finish developing my prototype (so I couldn't be GodModing).

OOC: for RP purposes i will tone it down, weaken it's shields, make the armor easier to overwhelm, etc, and only field small numbers of them. that should lower the godmodisness of it quite a bit. OCC: As the start time for the competition is uncertain, I'm following Balrogga and Beserker's example and getting a jump-start on the IC. Also, Jitano, I'm not sure if your a seperate planet or an Earth-nation, so I'll try to be ambigous.

IC: High above Jitano, space buckled and tore as three ships of the Skeelzanian Navy reentered realspace. The Fenrir cruiser and two corvettes had left the capital world of Solomon one week earlier to much fanfare. The hyperspace jump had gone smoothly, though it was quite aggravating to some unable to practice in the time being.

On board the assault cruiser Von Schultz, Lt. Dren looked down over the ship’s hanger. Schultz was one of the MKII type cruisers, hasty refits that had sacrificed crew comfort for hanger space, and the bay showed it. The three fighters took up most of the available space, and Dren was thankful that the engineer’s dropship was being transported on one of the Draco Kai corvettes. A crewman appeared behind Dren and saluted. “Sir, we have stabilized the ship back in realspace, and are opening communications with the Jitanoese. The captain says, if you wish, you may take your fighter out for practice.”

“Very good, sailor. Inform the captain that I will indeed take the Centurion out, and that my wingmen should be notified.” The crewman saluted and disappeared back into the bowels of the Von Schultz. Dren glanced over the hanger as the flight crew began their preflight check, then went off to suit up.

What terrain are we talking about? Is it space? Space and atmosphere? Anywhere we take the mock battle? ect...

Carrer Record: Born in the pristine suburbs of Facehugger city, Kenzie had an easy physical life, but a troubleing emotional one. He was born at a time when hatred of Elves was still prevelent in Central Facehuggeria, after their failed attempt to enslave the nation. He grew up constantly harrassed by ignorant humans. Turning inward, he trained himself physically and mentally, determined that none would ever torment him as his peers had. It was also during this time period that he fell in love with flying, taking pilot courses that were offered by the CF Aerial Militia.

When he was seventeen, his human mother and elvish father were killed by a molotov cocktail to their house. They were so burnt that they had to be identified by dental records alone.

Finding himself homeless in a hostile community, he did the only thing he could. He left.

Elves, Muslims, even the occassional Jew were shown in that poster. It left a remarkable imprint on young Kenzie. For the first time, he felt a sense that he wasn't alone.

He decided to dedicate himself to getting into the military. To this end, he got a job as a helicopter pilot ferrying around Eye in the Sky news crews.
It paid well, but he still felt incomplete. Most of his coworkers despised him.

Finally, one day, he said "Screw it." And enlisted in the CF Air Corps. After going through a rigorous two year training course, he graduated from Phalli Aerial Institute with honors, the first ever person of Elvish descent to graduate.

His skill with a plane became legendary, and when the CF Space Corps was first formed and they began looking for ace pilots to test new exo atmospheric fighters, Kenzie was one of the first to apply. He was also one of the first to be accepted.

Soon after completing his training with the then new Starfire class fighters, the 1st ever CF Capital ship, the CFV Vengeance was completed. He put in for a transfer to this prestigious ship, and got in just before its maiden voyage.

He fought admirably in deep space, getting over one hundred and sixty confirmed kills.

Upon returning, he was granted a Heroes welcome, and recieved the CF Phallus of honor, the highest honor in the nation (awarded by the Premier himself!)

But with the death of the Premier and the conversion of the government into national socialism, Kenzie finds his loyalties strained. He wants to resign from this brutal and wholly evil regime, but his love of flying and loyalty to his squadron prevents him.
