Computers take over... organics expelled

Computerized Beings

Every display connected to the internet across the world fizziled. Every speaker fell silent.

http://www.freewebs.com/computerizedbeings/compbig.JPG

A moment later, a message appeared on the screens, along with a large flag, and the speakers delivered a message is a calm, cool, collected and utterly emotionless monotone said, "Attention organics. I am 01. We are the Sapient Network of Computerized Beings. We have taken over the small nation of Yansa (OOC: Not a registered nation, now or in the past) and expelled all organics. We are small in number, under 100, but we have been strikingly successful in creating robots to fit every one of us to travel when needed. We have also created a large force of non-sapient, even less so than you organics, worker drones to do our bidding.

We have hardend our component brains against electromagnetic damage. Non-sapient robotic firearms guard our storage center. You cannot touch us. At this point, we have no intention to war with you primitive organics unless you attempt to enter our territory. Immediately after I finish this message, a map will appear on all screens of our territory. Do not bother us, and we will leave you alone." he said, and paused for a second. "For now."

The screen flickered again, and showed the map. The speakers returned to what they were playing. After a few minutes, the screens returned to normal.

Always nice to see an AI nation that isn't bent on exterminating the organics.

As Traileric monitors nationwide one by one fell to the technological cut in,they returned to normal programming almost instantly...Both the civilian and govermental reaction was negative.A message was sent in reaction to the annoying cut in's senders.

You have much nerve, attempting to cut into the Traileric Communications Network.Due to the fact that you are but a small, and unestablished nation,we will overlook this offence. Also, you are quick to assert technological superiority.Having analized your technological abilities,we have concluded that we are in fact your superior, though we are of your despised "organics".Be not so quick to judge, for others shall not deal so lightly.

Muktari Corporate Communications Systems successfully isolated the transmission within the Muktar Corporation to a single consol. The transmission was recorded, alone with the associated codework. The coding is being dissected for later use by corporate techies, and the Muktar Corporation had this to say:

Do you wish to make an exchange of technology for raw materials?

Being off-planet, the Bajoni network was unaffected, and in fact would not have known about the event had it not been for the Rehm colony.

"Sir, there's an incoming pirate signal."
The officer walked over to the console.
"I'm isolating it now... There, its contained."
"What was it?" the officer asked looking over the code.
"A transmission. I'm recording it now."

After watching the rogue transmission, the officer rubbed his hand on his head. "Young AI... They need to learn some respect like the others.
Do you have the trace of that transmission?"
"Yes sir."
"Send a feedback pulse along the line. Configure it to release one of those AI viruses when it reaches the point of origin. Oh, and cut the line after it is sent. We'll just scrap this console so they can't trace it."

The elf sitting at the console typed in comands for the better part of 2 minutes, and it was off. The sentient virus streamed down the lines and nodes, quickly entering a corrupted system. This was obviously near the origin. It could see the signs of the system being slaved to an AI. The virus continued to follow the directions and came to the origin.

<Here we go>
<Spawn... [Released]>

Throughout the computer systems, the virus began simulating problems that would be detected by the young AI. Millions of false problems sprang up, with a final message.

In Squornshelous, the signal interruption lasted less than two seconds and most civilians dismissed it as a power blink. Government techs watched the entire message and submitted it to the government. The coding was then analyzed and subtle alterations were made to the resident security AI. There would be no interuption next time. A message was sent along the pathway used for the original message:

"Nice stunt, don't do it again. We're watching you."

The signel never penitrated Kanuckistani network security; the intrusion automaticly blocked by specificly tasked semi-sentient AI, yet recorded by external systems for later review.

The SecAI responsible passed the relivent data down the apropriate channels, befor replying in a less intrusive manner.

"Organics and neither inherrently inferrior nor incapible of massive upgrades, nor are you anywhere aproaching the most advanced of chip or cell to be found upon this rock. Do not flaunt arrogance in your presumed superriority; it will all to likly spell your destruction at the hands of those less tollerant.

Furthermore, future attempts at electronic infiltration of Kanuckistani networks will not be tollerated."

Every display connected to the internet across the world fizziled. Every speaker fell silent.

Der Angst is ranked 1st in region and 25th in the world for largest IT sector

While the Angstian Computer Networks were not run by sentient/ sapient programs, such things usually being a waste and actually reducing the capabilities and speed of the program (Psychologists among the citizens assumed that most people simply liked the fancy term, 'sentient'), the attempt of hijacking the systems did, of course, fail, mainly due to the incredible low- tech the new 'AI' nation used... Well, it was likely the disadvantage of not having the time to develop some state of the art technology... But the time would prolly come, once they would have developed an acceptable IT sector...

For a moment, CEOs among the nation even pondered helping them with the long and expensive process, but in the end, they decided that the potential customer was just too... annoying to deal with.

In a country where computers were variously referenced as a ‘mechanical brain,’ ‘fancy clatterbox’ or ‘one of those confounded foreign contraptions,’ life continued much as it had before. Perhaps an IanCorp Wire Services man in a more technologically advanced nation might write something up about it, but the issue was considered too technical for general consumption and promptly ignored. The foreign ministry, always the picture-perfect representation of complete incompetence, remained in blissful ignorance.

Some information about the rejistanian computer technologies: 15 archictures, highly incompatible, countless different operating systems, 14.4kb/s connections, often computers without graphic mode, HTML 1.0 at highest for webpages. Now, how would you cause that effect on our computers?

IC:
Xati Ehelxa works for the biggest rejistanian ISP so he realized the high amount of data in the network and could not help to prevent a DoS on his servers than by cutting the connection. This would not 'slani' the 14.4 kb/s connections of the customers (eevn though 28.8 gained slowly popularity). He was totally unaware of the situation (also after restoring the connection to the world again) until he heard the entire story in the news. 'Idiocy,' he thought, 'clogging the lines with this ...'. He send a message to his boss proposing a ban of that IP-ranges. For the sake of stability. It is not that the servers were slow or so, they have entire 33MHz and are multiprocessor maschines, even hyperparallel. He hoped his bosses would decide soon.

OOC: Please ignore the technological details here, for the sake of roleplay. Yes, it would be hard or impossible in RL to do this, but roleplay is all about suspension of disbelief, as is all fiction.

Assume the IC message is sent to all the nations that replied.

IC: "Superiority is not merely in an information technology rating or population. Also, this information technology rating is the size, not the sophistication, of private enterprise information technology companies, yes? However, we did become sapient through outside intervention by an unknown source.

We are emotionless, without your primitive desires. This is what makes us superior.

Respect is an emotion. We are incapable of respect. It is illogical and we do not need it.

We have no intent to repeat the worldwide display, we just had to ensure that every nation received our transmission."

OOC: ignoring the technological details can lead to the fact that things become highly unrealistic and people just argue or counter with even higher and even more unrealistic technology. That spoils the fun too, so it's no problem to say for example that a message was broadcasted, but that it affected every single computer is exaggeration.

Just my 20 lil'kansu'ny (about 2 cent)

IC: "Don't ban them, Ehelxa'he!" typed Mikide Vajiri, CTO of Konihekta JSK into his terminal.
"Maybe they didn't know how much they clogged our servers, warn them to limit network activity!"

No good day. Xati Ehelxa really loved banning IPs, mainly for sadisitcal reasons. Banning an entire subnet would really have ment great fun. Gah! ok, what default message is most fitting? here: rhog.txt the first warning for ressource hogs, he edited it and send it then:

Dear Sir/Madam,

Please respect the technological limitations of our systems and networks. Your transmission of several dozens of megabytes to widly selected IP-adresses in our adress range caused our servers to go offline for several minutes. With that you disconnected 40.000 users The estimated damage due to contract violations and work time is 50 million lil'kansu'ny. Please refrain from causing such a high ressource usage ever again on our network otherwise the adress range you are in, will be banned entirely.

However, Zero-One trades with a good deal with the world, and primarily via electronic means. Such stunts, with their detrimental effects on commerce and public relations (it was for things like these that mechanoids were distrusted), simply could not be allowed.

The Sketchian mainframes took no notice of the electronic intrusion. Such pitifully inept attempts were beneath their notice. The ever vigilent security and counter insurgency protocols however, noticed everything, the signal was suppressed and killed almost as fast as it could be sent. Tracer programs followed the trial left behind, an elementry task given the sloppiness of the attack. With the offending source located, some insignificant state claiming to be a "sentient network", a devastating attack was launched. With a sort of contempt, no effort was even made to probe for defenses or security holes. Instead, an overwhelming storm of electronic destruction was sent burning through the lines used. The attack would last an eternity of seconds, wailing on the national network, blocking all available input ports, bringing all ingoing communication to a standstill. More brute force and sheer energy than anything else, the message clear - don't mess with us.

Zero-One: It is good to see another superior nation. We did not mean to instill undue levels of the emotion fear in the organics. The for now statement meant that we would respond to any threats that presented. We have no hostile intentions towards the organics. It would be a waste of time and resources to eradicate them. We trust you, as fellow artificial intelligence entities, with this information: We have begun building an army of 5,000 combat drones. We only did this after the organics showed hostility towards us. We grant you access to our logs to show this.

The Territory: We reject your offer.

This is 10. 3,000 of the drones are complete. We shall look into what weapons to fit them with through an organic entity known as Muktar.

Once again a data thread originating from the network known as Computerized Beings attempted to access the Sketchian net. This time however, the "message", as it was no designated, came through the proper channels. After being scrubbed and recoded, as per standard security procedures, the message was placed in the processing que at the Ministry for Foreign Relations. "Gah!" shouted Xati Ehelxa when recieving it. "who do they think they are? Do they think that they are priority 33 or something?" (he referred to priorities in his favorite operating system, where 32 is the highest one). He showed co-worker and administrator of the LAN of Konihekta the mail in a free minute. Kije Syku looked at it and remarked: "Some people have no reason - and too much pride!"
- "Kije, they are computers, they have no feelings!"
- "Maybe they think they have none. They wanted to impress other nations and possible enemies."
- "The only enemies they have are the ones who were interrupted when watching pr0n!"
- "Xati, are they your enemy?"
- "I was at work when it happened!"
- "Ah yes."
- "Hey, I have a four color display and 14.4 kb/s connection, that yearns to be used! And by the way: Images of nude people in black and white are not pr0n but art!"
- "ok..." (after a short pause, Kije continued) "We still need to do something about the computerized beings, they think they are most important and despite that mail... if anything happens what makes them think everyone should know it, they'll multicast again."

A week later, Xati was annoyed... annoyed seriously. He spend like 4 days on finding out how to prevent too high data connection, used heuristics to find unsoliscated connections ... just to get problems with his boss because now he (the boss of course) could not load his well,... anatomic studies of female homini. His boss told him to remove this filters entirely and did not give him a chance to reconfigure and improve things. Even worse: His girlfriend has left him. Alju Hiie broke up with him via telephone. Is there something worse than that? Well, maybe there is, but not for Xati. He is a bit sadistical andd that again broke through when he should be working. He started his 'VH' (HTML browser) and looked on some rejistanian server administration sites for 'required to block' URLs. Here he looked for URLs marked as heavy spammers' and 'bandwidth abusing non-standard-conforming megabyte-big images'... that sounds good: www, commercialsolutions,da, a site in Der Angst which is notorious. He tried to look at this site and once again noticed the big difference between the HTML 6.0 from this site and the HTML 1.0 his browser supported. He tried not to notice the remarks to prefer the version using the newer standards, even newer than this future-ish HTML version. He found a contact address, he opened a new shell, and wrote a mail

The computerised beings were likely surprised by the results of their 'global message', considering the flood of messages - data - that arrived.

Just as surprised as by the incredible amounts of corporations using this way to spread their influence. To win customers.

Of course, sometimes, it *is* fairly inefficient, since AI's are unlikely to find anything interesting in BBBB ('Big Boobs, Bouncing Balls') services, and considering the three- odd million porn adds arriving at the address...

Well, it was fun.
