Want to Learn How to RP?

25-05-2004, 22:41
Want to learn how to RP? Confusing threads not enough? Each month, hundreds - if not thousands - of nations attempt to RP on their own in NationStates, only to be labeled a n00b, ignored, or taken advantage of. Entering the NationStates world (especially the NationStates and International Incidencts forums) without knowing how to RP can be as hard as trying to find a high-paying job without a college degree. Without the proper help, many potential RPers could give up, leaving NationStates void of new players - making a boring community to those already at NationStates. With the massive amounts of people expected to come to NationStates this summer, there are many possible RPers out there.

Nanakaland Has the Solution!
Presenting the LoD Academy
Soon To Open
The Legion of Defence (LoD) Academy is a free service provided by the alliance called the LoD (for more on the LoD, click here (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=144058)) to teach people not only how to RP, but also how to RP well. Three courses on RP, with many classes - and eventually many more courses for the specialization of RP - makes the LoD Academy a perfect place to learn. The Academy will be opening soon.

That's where you come in. If you are an experienced RPer, you can apply to become a teacher and if you are someone who wants to learn how to RP, you can apply and learn! The Academy will open soon, but we need a significant amount of taechers and students applied before we can start. As Uncle Sam would say,

Has already been done. Wolfish and Stephistan run Role Play University.

..And shouldn't a Role Play school be taught by someone with a little more RP skill in all areas? You've said yourself that your strong point is Character RPs. Are you planning oh hiring others to fill in the other categories?

TROUSRS,

Do you have to criticize everything I do? You're pretty annoying.

Has already been done. Wolfish and Stephistan run Role Play University.

I know about the RP University. However, they wouldn't let me become a teacher, so I started my own using an alliance I'm head of. Besides, this Academy is also to help train new LoD members. In fact, the RP University, the Gameply Academy, and this may actually have a treaty of sorts.

..And shouldn't a Role Play school be taught by someone with a little more RP skill in all areas?

What? I've been around since March of 2003 (resurrected nation). I'm pretty good at RPing, too (holding many more popular threads and archived threads than TROUSRS). Besides, I have better spelling and grammar than you.

You've said yourself that your strong point is Character RPs.

Using my own words against me? I'm good at all types of RP (modern tech, future tech, fantasy, character, etc.). I said that I like character RPs better than modern tech war RPs.

Are you planning oh hiring others to fill in the other categories?

Even though I'm good at most of the RP categories, I am hiring teachers to help teach.

[OOC: I never was friends with you. I was just friendly toward most people, including you. I actually sort of always was annoyed by you OOCly. Also, I haven't wanted to be a mod for a long time, actually. Leave me alone for once. You're moving up my hate list, now almost higher than Russian Forces (who unjustly invaded me).]

I'd like to apply to become an RP teacher.

Credentials:

~6 years Pen and Paper RP experience
~NS RP for a long time. I started back at the Amerigo slavewars (resurrected nation). Some of the threads i've been involved in are: Every Shentavo Academy thread, I was a Co-founder of NATO(since defunct) and participated in every one of their threads. Those are some of the better ones.
~6 1/2 years of acting experience, 2 years semi-pro. (not technically RP, but some of the same premises)
~5 years Improv acting experience, which is VERY much like RP
~I actually (as a general rule) employ grammar, correct spelling, and complex sentance structures.

Yea, if that isnt enough, we can do a demonstration or something.

OOC: I believe the point being made is that not everyone acknowledges or respects the legendary role-playing credentials being claimed by Nanakaland. Claiming to be taught by Nanakaland will open some doors, and close others.

Hmm. I have some experience with wars in the past (once again, ressurected player) and with large-scale RPs. I'd like to teach war-RPing, actually.

No one can tell you 'The Right Way' to roleplay. That's my only problem with all these supposed 'universities' and the like.

We are none of us experts, people. We all have our different areas of interest, our own strengths and weaknesses, and our own unique styles. While many things may be said to be understood or mutually agreed on by a large number of people on any one given subject such as ettiquite, acceptability and the like, you'll find that many things differ from group to group, person to person.

Look long enough, you will find all sorts of different views on 'elitism', 'valid rp', tech levels, proper character interaction, and the list goes on. There is enough room on this game for all sorts - even if we ourselves do not agree with it.

My suggestion for how to learn to rp? Read the stickies. Read those threads that interest you most, observe what the players involved do. Participate. Learn by trial and error and experience. Find out what you like, what works for you, what is enjoyable to you ... and go with it.

There is no one 'right' way to play this game. There is no way to 'win' it, though there may be some that tell you otherwise. The bottom line is get out there, find what niche pleases you best, and have fun with it. Forget that there will always be someone who will criticize you, regardless of what you do - that holds true for all of us.

And there you have it ... my two cents. Take it for what it's worth.
