Main newspapers in your nation

Hell Bovines

What are the main newspapers in your nation? Do your citizens have any contact with the outside world at all? Are they controlled by the state, by corporate conglomerates? Can be really considered independent?
Post right here so that we can all know about it!

The main nationwide newspapers in Hell Bovines:

As a socialist nation, all newspapers and media sources in Hell Bovines are state-owned. But state-owned doesn't mean state-controlled. As stated in Hell Bovinian law, all media industries are administered by worker cooperatives and the government isn't allowed to have a say in what these cooperatives write, say or publicate.

#The main nationwide newspapers in Hell Bovines are:

*The Bovine Herald (El Heraldo Bovino): One of the most popular and respected newspapers in the Grand Duchy, The Bovine Herald is a leftist, yet moderate newspaper. Whenever possible, it tries not to give its articles any political connotation and write them as neutral as possible. The biggest and most popular newspaper, the herald is also widely popular thanks to its respect for different opinions and, of course, for its great comic strips.

*Greenfields Spy (Espia de Greenfields): A left-of-centre newspaper, the greenfields spy was founded right after the joining of Hell Bovines to the Non Human Union (NHU). It's news are centered on the developments of the entire Greenfields continent and the development of the NHU as a whole. However, another reason it has become popular is its great horoscope.

*The Combatant (El Combatiente): A radical-left, somewhat popular tabloid, the combatant is characterised by its agressiveness torwards capitalist and right-wing nations. Oftenly writing with a revolutionary rethoric and without giving much information, the combatant has yet managed to become popular, specially in the south of the country.

*Cow Snooper (La Vaca Chusma): This is simply a low-quality, non-informative tabloid. It's sensasionalist articles center mainly on celebrities and on looking for ways to cause polemic in the country. They don't seek news, they seek public scandals.

*Bovine Unity (Unidad Bovina): A right-of-centre newspaper, unidad bovina oftenly tends to write its articles with a pro-capitalism stance. This is the kind of newspaper that writes wonders about the capitalist world and its one of the few newspapers of the nation that critisized the signing of the International Fair Trade Agreement (IFTA). Though not very popular, it has managed to reach to many citizens specially in the city of Blackhooves' Barn, where it has its headquarters.

Miko Live: Sports, activities, safety issues, crime, etc all spoken for those who cannot read (working class).

As a plus, I have included a little information on them.

The Vanguard Unlimited
-Well known and strong liberal political bias (once a year, the publication includes a big insert in it that simply says in large blue letters 'And proud of it', believed to be in reference to this), the leading newspaper, general purpose news.
(OOC: Loosely based on the Guardian Unlimited)

The Arcology Compendium
-Technology centered paper.

The Cat City Times
-Liberal political bias. Famous for editorials.
(OOC: Loosely based on the New York Times)

The Cat City Post
-Famous for getting the poltical scoops and leaks first, due to it having its offices right outside most of the government pods.
(OOC: ...Washington Post...)

Ten-Ten-Ten Times
-Artsy paper, with a liberal polticial bias. Gets its name from Arcology Ten's Level Ten, Section 10, famous for its art and culture scene.
(OOC: ...Village Voice...)

The 8-9 Journal
-Financial focus, very little other content. Editorial section has conservative bias. Named after the 8th
(OOC:... Wall Street Journal)
Tanah Burung
22-05-2004, 17:57
There are hundreds of newspapers in Tanah Burung, each run by an independent co-operative. There is no state interference of any sort with the press, although the six provincial governments each publish their own government gazette with news about upcoming referendums, access to government services, and even occasionally a new law, one the rare occasions when one manages to get passed. The main limitation is availability of newsprint, and the largest-circulation papers are those with special arrangements with hemp paper producing co-ops (newspring made from wood pulp is very rare due to strict regulations on forest protection).

The largest newspapers include:

Matebian Times (leftist daily)
Daily Crocodile (sports news)
Catholic New Times (news from a progressive Christian perspective)
The Emerald Review (hoity, and a little toity)
Tanah Burung International Tribune (published overseas in English)
Yummy News (food, drink, entertainment and the tastier things)
Ukun Rasikan Beacon-Herald-Picayune-and-Mail-Star (daily paper resulting from media convergence gone wild, politically centrist)
Star of Loro Sae (left-libertarian daily)
Yer Daily Sun (news in bite-sized bits, with plenty of pin-up girls & boys)
Hello Sailor! (sex & gossip)
Rights News, Right Now (international news, with a human-rights spin)
Tiga Burung Tribune (nationalist daily)
Orsainville
22-05-2004, 18:23
Our newspapers are:
Le matin d'Orsainville (about general news)
La Gazette d'Orsainville (about politic)
The Orsainville Sun (a newspaper in english for english-speaking's minority]
Ouverture-Magazine (a progressist editorial newspaper)
We have also magazines:
Cité Libre (a liberal magazine)
L'OrsainVert (a ecologist magazine)
Caricature-Ville (a caricature's magazine)
Le Bigot: Affaire (a magazine about business)
Le Bigot: Économie (a magazine about economy)

Terrible Malice
22-05-2004, 18:35
Terrible Malice has two different newspapers, and as all other buisnesses they are closely connected to the government:

Daily Malice
Violenceburg Times

Furthermore there is weekly published a newsletter by one of the government's opposers titled "The Independant Freedom Weekly". However, this is an illigal publication and is printed outside our borders and smugled into the country by traitors.
Greater Perolijk
22-05-2004, 19:03
The most important newspapers in Greater Perolijk are these (names translated):

Voice of Perolijk - serious, respected, relativly conservative (by Perolijkan standards) in language and attitudes. Very popular, comes in four local varieties, each written in a different dialect.

The daily messenger - serious, leaning a bit more to the left and is a bit more daring in its language and attitudes than the above mentioned newspaper, only one variety, but is translated in three dialects

The Perolijkan Uryuom - a serious newspaper focusing on issues regarding one of our two significant ethnic minorities that certainly does not come from outer space, it is written in Uruomoco. Obviously not too large given its limited target group.

Perolijkan times: the biggest tabloid in Perolijk, like most Perolijkan tabloids, it is by international tabloid standards pretty serious.

The Fatherland: a pretty radical and political newspaper written in eastern Perolijkan. It is fairly popular, espechially among younger and politically interrested people. This newspaper is not afraid to take sides.

It is worth mentioning that the editor of a newspaper in Greater Perolijk may not be a stockholder in said newspaper, to avoid economic issues from influencing its contents too much.
Cauthu Arn
22-05-2004, 19:09
Newspapers never developed in Cauthu Arn.

How people do get their news is could be likened to a mass gossip network. :)
Sirocco
22-05-2004, 19:12
Er... A paper that tells you what's going on in Sirocco... it was a new idea at the time and I don't think the founders were very good at names. Still, it was a great success as it launched at the same time as the great toilet roll strike of '91.
Teritora
22-05-2004, 19:31
Teritoran National News:

The Royal Times: An Daily newspaper published by the Royal Government, this newspaper is surpisely lacking surpisingly little spin on the information it gives unconcern with how people will react to the news. It gives the facts about doings of the national government and how the Royal government views events in Teritora and around the world, new techological breakthroughs and that is it.

The Royal Arm Forces Chronicles: An monthly newspaper published by the Combined Armed Forces Newspaper, this newspaper as its name sugests deals mainly with with the Teritoran Armed Forces and is an especally poplular newspaper

The Catholic Veiwer: An weekly mostly moderate Newspaper published by the Catholic Church, this relgious newspaper is extremely popular.
Tomkins
22-05-2004, 19:33
Hmmm...Tomkins has a number of newspapers, ranging from the National, through Regional down to local. While private enterprise is illigal, most of our newspapers are run by workers cooperatives of journalists, printers and so on. There are some government owned publications but they are protected from direct government control and are instead run by committee.
Most of the papers are left leaning and libertarian though a small minority are on the right of the political spectrum. Having a well educated population means Tomkins is unsual in that broadsheet newspapers are actually more popular than tabloids.

NYNJ has several. The NY Times and the Daily News make up most of NYNJs current circulation on a daily basis. The times being more focused on the nation itself instead of smaller city stories while the Daily News which operates in most large NYNJ cities focuses on those cities and their current events.

The weekly newsmagazines are led by Gaze. Which deal mostly with foreign policy, military affairs, and diplomatic posturing.

Cyberutopia
22-05-2004, 19:50
The Red Rail: Ultra-liberal newspaper, it commonly advocates full-fledged communism in Cyberutopia. Often runs on the ragged edge of getting shut down by the government for the intense slander in some of it's more famous articles.

The Cavalier: A moderate, mellow newspaper run mainly by the government, it is the fairest and prides itself on it's lack of corruption and extreme bias.

The Cyberutopian Seeker: A generally leftist newspaper, though much less extreme than The Red Rail. Often runs articles in congratulatory support of the government's positions on most issues, perhaps as a result that the government is occasionally looking over it's shoulder.

The Hokkaido Armorsmith: The only newpaper in Cyberutopia with a conservative stance, it is a hardline supporter of more money for the military, and a larger WMD arsenal.

Sarzonia
23-05-2004, 16:18
There is no "national newspaper of record" in Sarzonia, though the Woodstock Mail comes close to being that. It's the best newspaper in the country for reporting international news and national news. It has an extensive local section that is renowned for its reports that have often forced action by the local authorities. Simply put, it's the best of the best. If countries call and ask for a newspaper to be sent to them from Sarzonia, this is the newspaper that gets sent every time.

The other biggest newspaper in Sarzonia is the Nicksia News, which is a tabloid daily that reports more innuendo than fact, though it's often right on the money because its reporters have a standing order to find out as much as possible that can tangibly be considered germane to the story they're investigating.

The Portland Globe is a daily newspaper that spends more time on local news but has an excellent section on national news. It suffers a bit on its sports and entertainment sections but they're striving to improve in those areas, particularly since the new top-flight football league is getting underway and Portlanders are passionate about the Timbers.

The Townshend Times is a weekly newspaper that runs mostly analysis pieces and non-breaking news. Its writers are often veteran reporters who are tired of the daily newspaper grind and like to write more in depth stories.

The Sarzonia Statesman is a brand new five day a week publication that is attempting to become the newspaper of record for Sarzonia. Its local coverage will be limited to the hardest-hitting news and will focus on national and international news. [OOC: It will be like the USA Today for Sarzonia.]

Knootoss
24-05-2004, 14:48
OOC: Interesting… I do recall giving a slight overview before with my political campaigning and all, cuz the papers are different. They are loosely based on Dutch papers, but radically different in outlook since Knootoss is different from Holland. It should be noted that all domestic papers (including the leftist ones) are at least partly owned by media conglomerates such as KNN. From big to small:

Wombat News
‘nuff said. ;)

Trouw (‘Loyalty’)
A decidedly centrist newspaper with formerly Christian roots but secularised along with the rest of the Knootian media. Medium-brow, most of its readers are middle-class with white-collar jobs. Trouw is fact-oriented, and tends to state both sides of the story with a tendency to focus on moral judgements. Interestingly enough, it has no direct ties with political parties but has ‘supporters’ amongst the more pragmatic politicians within the liberal SLP, the green KGP and the conservative RCPK.

De Telegraaf (‘The Telegraph’)
A low-brow paper that is unabashedly conservative and right-wing. A firm supporter of current Prime Minister Galadriël nos Cirdan, it favours ‘decisive policies’ and ‘leadership’. It lost its status as the largest paper in the DDR after supporting the extreme-right Dick Tator before the shadow war, but it remains a strong voice in public opinion.
Articles in this newspaper are opinionated, and the writers despise ‘communism’ (which, according to them, is anything to the left of the Conservatives)

De Volkskrant ('The Peoples Paper')
As the name suggests, this is a progressive paper that attracts both socialist and leftist non-socialist readers. Generally supportive of the green KGP and more progressive SLP elements and welcoming towards the new Socialist Party. (De Telegraaf consistently claims that De Volkskrant is being run by communist agitators.) It mainly competes for readers with Trouw.

NRC Handelsblad ('New Rotterdam Courier / Trade Journal')
A merger from the New Rotterdam Courier and the Amsterdam-based General Trade Journal, this paper is relatively small but high-quality. This high-brow paper is mainly read by the upper class, government officials, and the corporate elite. It is openly Liberal in its outlook (as its mission statement says). While its views politically ought to coincide with the government (liberal/conservative) it often takes its own views on matters and is appreciated for this by its influential readers. This is because it is not regarded as a propaganda outlet for the general population but more as a ‘grindstone for the brain’ that provides in-depth analysis. Financial data, stock quotes etc. also form a backbone of the paper as it provides daily figures for almost all NS nations with stock exchanges. (This makes it a very big paper in terms of pages.)

Iansisle
25-05-2004, 05:12
The thousands of newspapers printed in the Iansislean Commonwealth have but one thing in common: they are all printed by the Iansislean International Telegraph Corporation (IanCorp, Int.) of Ianapalis. Recent theorists have proposed that Jackson Halders, who controls IanCorp from his office fifty stories above Gallaga Street, really wields more political power than Parliament or the King, and perhaps even both of them put together.

IanCorp dominates every aspect of Shieldian cultural life. It is the teneral moving-picture house you take your sweetheart to; it is Kirk Valoon and other silver screen legends; it is the wireless broadcast you listen to first thing in the morning; it is the telephone wires over which you call your mother; it is everything.

The corporation which is now omnipresent got its humble start as a young man with a simple plan for exploiting new technology. Within a scant few years, his wire network expanded until it connected Ianapalis not only to Fort Jackson, but to Nusheld, Great Walmington, and the world. IanCorp spread from there into other forms of media, everwhere victorious; everywhere crushing new barriers underfoot.

The old economic powers of the Shield, such as the East Gallaga Company, Royal Mining and Manufacturing, and the United Banking Concerns, were astonished. Here was a company whose wealth lay not in land, metals, or liquid capital but in information. At the start of High King Toto IV’s reign, IanCorp was a virtual unknown; towards the middle, it displaced the Company as the third largest corporation; as the old king lay on his deathbed, it was undisputable the largest, most wealthy, and most influential power on the Shield.

But this story is not about the rise of IanCorp; it is about the multitude of newspapers it has spawned or absorbed. Foremost among these must be the Ianapalis Star-Tribune. Priced at four kenerals a paper, it is expensive for the lower middle class and unattainable for the working classes (though not as expensive as true upper-class publications, such as the Ianapalis Financial Review, which clocks in at a hefty general and a half!).

The Shadoran Star can trace its history back past the forging of the Empire to the days of the seven kingdoms and has earned a place as one of the Shield’s oldest surviving publications. The Star thought it had already met its greatest nemesis when the family-owned business was challenged for subscriptions in the nation’s capital by the Ianapalis Tribune. For generations, the two papers waged a war of words and occasionally bullets. Readership hardened around one or the other and the pair continued to slag away like Rome and Carthage or Venice and Genoa.

When IanCorp made its first forays into the world of newspaper publishing, both sides attempted to play the newcomer (which had the strength of a giant, if the mind of a child) against the other. However, both soon realized that neither alone could both contain the latest addition to the game. An alliance ensued, but the readership remained too divided for IanCorp to consider the conquering of both little more than a bump in the road. Now, the Star-Tribune, under IanCorp management, continues to be published from the Star’s historical office in downtown Ianapalis.

The real power of IanCorp lies not in its top-line upper crust papers, however, but in the thousands of ‘Keneral Rags’ it has spawned. Low-brow, full of pictures and cartoons, and featuring articles written by the Wire Services, these magazine-format papers serve as both IanCorp’s biggest moneymaker and its greatest control over the opinions of the Mob.

The IanCorp Wire Services, however, deserve their own section. Many of the contributing authors work under close supervision in downtown Ianapalis for the keneral rags, but most serve overseas in virtually every nation known to the Empire of the Shield. These reporters are present at virtually every foreign and domestic news conference, and their stories fuel every IanCorp paper’s international section, from the Financial Review to the Star-Tribune to the Daily Workhorse.

And of course, no discussion of Commonwealth newspapers would be complete without mentioning the Troobodia Sentinel. Published in the Dominion of Troobodia, which has a population of less than 500,000, by the government, with offices in Troobodia (the city) and Copplestone, it provides a biweekly insight into happening in government, new laws, upcoming elections, and a myriad of other things IanCorp doesn’t think the masses ought to know. Paid for as it is by the government, the Sentinel is provided free of charge for every citizen of the Dominion.

Sakkran newspapers are all distributed electronically, since all that paper would just make for filthy streets.

The Imperial Newsfeed: Datastream that watches events system-wide. Can have a search function that 'listens' for news of import to the individual, and streams those headlines to the individual. Sanctioned by the Imperial Line, but not edited or controlled by them. All information is received and sent 'as is' from the newspapers of other nations.

The National Bask: Tabloid and sensationalistic headlines known for being unreliable info. All is taken with a grain of salt in this light reader. Humor pages are superior to the Imperial newsfeed, however.

And then there are numerous regional titles, such as the Savannah Searcher, Tranquility Times, Guaah Transcript, Eeorouh Relay and many more.

KT MPLG
26-05-2004, 10:31
These are the most influential news sources in our nation.

Printed physical papers (also have online branches):

Miralan Chronicle - Published in KT MPLG's capital of Miralan, this paper follows the government more closely than any other. It follows the Conservative party line nearly to the letter.

St. Alicia Times - Published out of the medium-sized city of St. Alicia, the Times is a great source for those looking to read about world events, sports, or crime. It leans slightly to the Unity side, but all in all does a good job of reporting the news fairly.

The Selian Eye - Paper for devoutly religious Selianists. Although the actions of Buddhist and Catholic missionaries have weakened Selianism, the religion is still practiced by a plurality of KT MPLG's people, so the Eye is a potent force.

Nationwatch - Tabloid, but they have been responsible for bringing out numerous political scandals, including the recent Sophie Daimon corruption fiasco.

Purely online news sources:

news.co.wn - They don't publish in print in KT MPLG, but their website is one of the most visited in the nation.

Dragon Child - Originally this was just an average blog, wherein Ryuko Onover would rant about current events while working on her journalism degree. Then, about four years ago, she uncovered a disturbing secret regarding the man in line for the top position in the Selian hierarchy. She carefully confirmed all her facts, then dropped the bomb on her site. When the government dug and found her story true, Ryuko became a minor celebrity. She was offered plenty of positions, but refused and started KT's first independent news website. Now she's raking in the blackrocks. She occasionally submits pieces to NW and the Times, but most of her work goes into Dragon Child. Her political views are heavily Unity.
Teakland
26-05-2004, 20:53
The Scholarly Republic of Teakland has three national newspapers and three major periodicals (aside from, of course, Wombat News, which is available to all Teaklanders but is not technically national as it is not indigenous).

The three newspapers are:
The National Press – “Your News. Now.” #1 circulating paper in the country: slightly right-wing and pro-capitalist bias; the best source for science and business news.
Teakland Today – “What You Need To Know.” #2 paper: unabashedly right-wing, but the best news source for national current events, sports, and entertainment.
The International – “The World At Large.” #3 paper: slight left-wing bias; the best source for international current events and environmental news.

Teakland’s top three periodicals are:
Quantum Weekly – “Science. Simple.” Weekly magazine: anything and everything new in the scientific world, with an emphasis on Teak innovations.
Driftwood - “Teakland’s Cultural Debris.” Bi-weekly magazine: arts and entertainment news, focusing on more literary than popular culture.
La Semana - “ Su mundo, su manera.” Weekly magazine: Spanish-language magazine featuring national and international news.
