Up until now, workers' rights in Xanthal have included guarantees regarding working conditions, but no comprehensive guidelines for working time requirements. As the United Nations debates its newest proposal, The 40 Hour Workweek, the Socialist Republic has passed its own laws on the subject, defining limits on work time and off-days for the first time.
The bill, passed yesterday in the Council by a 9/3 vote, is summarized below.
Working Laws Amendment #52:
Article three (summarized): No worker shall be required to work more than five days a week and more than eight hours a day UNLESS that worker is an activated soldier in the Military, in which case they must not spend more than one week at a time in active combat.
Article four (summarized): No employer shall compel workers to work beyond the limits set in Article three through work load, threat, or demand unless the worker is an activated soldier, in which case he/she/it may be required to spend up to two weeks in a combat zone.
Article five (summarized): All workers shall be paid doubly for time worked over the limits set in Article three.
Article six (summarized): All workers with the exception of activated Military soldiers must be granted unpaid leave from work if they are ill or injured and have written confirmation of illness or injury from a medical professional. In the case of activated soldiers, ill or injured personnel must be evacuated from the combat area as soon as possible.
Article seven (summarized): All workers must be granted thirty days of vacation time, unpaid leave from work, at the start of every year. This vacation time can be used at any time during the year in which it was granted, but cannot be used for more than five periods of absence from work and must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. All employers have the right to deny workers the use of vacation time when granting that time would result in an unacceptable shortage of staff.
