Arcanum RP Sign-Up thread

Wandering Argonians
10-05-2004, 22:39
This is a sign-up thread for a future free-plot RP set in the 'Arcanum' tech level. I derive the name & tech level from a computer-based RPG of the same name.

The Arcanum tech level blends late 19 century technology (and some advanced variations as well) with magic & mythology. The two balance out, however. Since magic produces ultrasonic vibrations, use of magic or magical creatures will cause illness in the user & mechanical devices to malfunction & explode. This acts as a balancing variable, so there can be no master gunslingers who can summon skeleton minions without any complications. This can be done, but you'll likely miss your target, have your weapon missfire, and/or mess up the spell & have skeletons after you instead of your target. Please keep this in mind.

I'm looking for up to fifteen decent (preferably expeirenced) RP'ers.
Try to keep characters at a reasonable skill level, so we don't have fifteen firearms masters or century-old master wizards walking around.

The RP will start in a large, industrial town known as Gregsburg. Gregsburg is a recent believer in technology, and still has many among its population who oppose its useage. The anti-technologists have been forced into the poorer areas due to the massive conflictions with magic that steam engines cause. Gregsburg is divided in half by a large river & the two sides are connected by a large, wide bridge supported in the middle by a small island. The main support houses the Halfway Inn, a popular tavern due to its magical & technological neutrality.

Quick tech list

Guns:
Flintlock pistols & rifles
Revolver (Magic resistant)
Repeater rifle (Magic resistant)
Mechanized gun (Machinegun)
Elephant gun
Hand cannon
Screnk's Pistol (Multibarrel weapon)
Flamethrower

Swords:
Katana
Longsword
Alloy Sword (technological)
Axe
Dwarven Axe (technological)
Shocking Sword (technological)
Filament sword
Dagger
Magical Swords (magical)

EDIT:
To respond to Cyberutopia's question, there are numerous races allowed, but some have magical predispositions that will effect their tech use.

Elf (Magical)
Half-Elf (Semi-Magical)
Human
Dwarf (Non-Magical)
Half-Orc
Argonian
Elf Sub-Breeds (Drow, Woodelf, Fairy, etc.)
Half-Orge

((Saweet idea, WA. I assume since this is a magical RP, other races are allowed. Therefore, if it's alright, I'm going to be playing a Drow, because I've never done so before. Should be fun.))

In once of the numerous dark recesses of the Halfway Inn, a lone figure sat, sipping brandy. The other occupants tried to keep their eyes averted, sensing the malvolent aura of necrotic magics about her. Her exact clothing was unidentifiable, cloaked in a ragged black cape, full of holes and shredded cloth near the bottom from heavy use. Luxurious white hair cascaded down her back and over her shoulders, coupling with her jet black skin to give her an exotic flair. She was in the bloom of youth, but the attractive features of her supple body were marred by the coldness of her eyes. For now, she watched the inn like a hawk.

Count me in, comrade! I've been looking for a good RP. As things update, could you TG me? I'll start thinking on an appropriate character... and, uh, how many elephant guns do you have going around? :D

Edit: Just a basic rundown of a character.
Alex (or Alexei) Bistron, human, 34, male, packing an elephant gun and a flintlock pistol. Whoosh!

OOC: Anything for an interested personage.

And yes, breech-loading elephant guns are entirely acceptable.

Should I?, Shouldn't I?...

Of course I would play an elf in any case...

As it says at the top of the post, this is a completely free-from RP, so go where you will with it.

I'm interested.

-Aschen Ko
-Human male
-Since humans are not "non-magical", I'll assume that they have access to at least some minor magical abilities. Ko uses such magic to aid him in his vocation as a spy, such as camouflaging into the background (more experienced people can turn invisible, but Ko hasn't quite reached that level yet), mind alteration to make people "not notice" him, even forget about him (more advanced levels can actually implant false memories), being able to detect a nearby presence to know when to hide, and other such things that would help make him stealthier.
-Arms: katana, two daggers, throwing stars
-Slightly opposed to more advanced technologies such as guns.

cool, ive always liked arcanum, great game. i think ill join.

charecter-
name-Harrald Ironfoot
race-Dwarf
age-53
is a sceintist, studying herbology, explosives, electronics, and gunsmithy, he prefers technology, and dislikes magic of all sorts, he carrys a revolver at all times, along with a mechanical dagger. Harrald is very cynical, normally keeps to himself, but is normally up for an adventure. Harrald is known to ware clothes of any normal Dwarf, nothing special. Harrald enjoys a good hunting trip, a good ale, some dwarven snuff, and reading books. he always carrys around a bag that holds his equipment, and some extra ammunition for his revolver.

OOC: Swords of magical classification can do anything from simply enhance the strength of the wielder to summoning magical creatures to aid the owner in combat.

Since you are an elven character & will be carrying a flintlock firearm, the sword would work best if it where of low magical status, since the close proximity of the elvish presence & the magic of the sword would cause the weapon to missfire pretty often. If you are okay with a very unreliable firearm, then make the sword what you will.

Actually are elves in arcanum considered somewhat weak?
Cyberutopia
16-05-2004, 22:32
Hey WA, what would you say about a vorpal or magicaly poisoned sword if I only focused on magic?
Kihameria
21-05-2004, 03:39
There are poisoned swords, but they are more technological than magical.
and elves are weaker in arcanum strengthwise, they are built to be fast, and mages, so they are good archers and mages, but not the kind of people you want in the front line of any army.

Is it possible to play a character with a trait, as in the game? Or a human from the Magical City (the name escapes me at the moment, but the one with the apparition before you go to the Wastes with all the Masters, etc). I had an idea for a human who took souled his soul to demonkind for more magical power and now wishes to atone the choice by doign good works. Or else a human technological "monster" hunter from Tarant.

If so (in either case), I would liek to sign-up for this thread, and await approval before I post on the RP thread.

the mage city....Tulla, i think.
but one of the backgrounds/traits is that youre charecter sold his/her sould to a demon or something in return for magical powers, but you cant be good(good on the good/evil spectrum, not good/bad spectrum) with that background, so says the game but this is a freeform RP, all sorts of things can happen.
as for human monster hunters..... i see no problem with either.

you might want to TG wandering aragonians if you still desire approval, it was his idea.
