The Birth of a Nation - Romulox of Vestistan factbook.

Romulox
09-05-2004, 10:39
The Commonwealth of Romulox announces it's birth into the Region of Vestistan.

Romulox is a small country, no bigger than the United States'
Massachusetts (est. 7,500 square miles: Land Survey 1997). The
terrain is coastal to the South with high hills (highest point -
Pinnacle Point 4,200 feet above sea level) to the North. A native
tall grass, and large shrubbery dominates the landscape, and can prove
to be quite a nuisance when left to grow wild. There are no native
trees in Romulox. All the trees you would find have been transplanted
from various sources. There are a handful of lakes scattered about,
the largest, Lake Salerno, measures over 40 square miles, and has a
lowest depth of 120 feet, and is located in the hills. The geology is
a random sack of soil save for the two mines; Tungsten, and pewter.
But the topsoil is fertile, and the native fruit, Dossberries grow
plentifully.

The weather is fluctuant. Beautiful, cloudless days can turn into
tumultuous, electrical nights. Winters are short, but can bring snow, hail, incapacitiating storms and can cripple transportation.

The settlement history was very limited until recently. Patrick
Kelliher purchased the land for 900 million dollars in 1997 from
Randall Upshaw, famous Vestistan developer. Kelliher then exhausted
his entire remaining 1.4 billion dollar bankroll building his tourism
paradise, and capital city, Ballastaire. Immediately, young adults
fresh from college came from every corner of the globe arrived to
intern in restaurants, casinos, tourism, and the fledgling government.
Therefore, the diversity of the peoples is as countless as the number
of countries they originated from. Some 10 and 1/2 months after
Ballastaire had started to train its staff, was the first nationalized
citizen born. Evan Joseph Kexel became an immediate celebrity as the
first native Romuloxian. The baby's surname "Kexel" became a local
slang word meaning "the first." To "Kexel" something means to pioneer
something.

There a few things that make the capital city unique. The first thing
to take notice of is the total lack of gasoline powered vehicles.
Gasoline powered vehicles are only allowed in the city limits for construction and emergency vehicles. If you have flown into Crowley Municipal Airport with a tourist card, you are immediately handed keys
to electrical powered small capacity vehicles, able to handle the size of your party. The "cart system" as it's commonly called, is a very simple trade off procedure to ensure that everyone gets transportation, fully charged, when needed. It is for this reason, guests are often reminded to bring their things with them when leaving a cart with a valet. Also, Kelliher "Kexeled" a system of free housing and 2 meals a day for people that work for any of the resorts owned by the Kelliher Consortium. You'll notice these "dormitories" as triangular buildings adjacent to the resorts. These dormitories are triangular shaped to give everyone a great view in their private rooms as they share a kitchen, common room, and bathroom with two other housemates. It is this diversity and sense of teamwork, thatKelliher considers the "platformed basis of community to which all
other nations be measured". (Inaugauration speech, 2001)

Religious observances and services are kept to the home and family in
Romulox. No one is embarrassed by them, but no churches were built in
Ballastaire to avoid any assemblance of religious preference. The
separation of religion and government is STRONGLY outlined in the
Romuloxian Constitution.

There are however, plently of Patriotic ways to celebrate for the
whole family in Romulox. Here are a list of recognized national
holidays;

January 1st - New Years Day - To celebrate the passing of another
year. Usually done with noise, resolutions, and intoxicants.

January 17th - Polaski Hills Racing Day - No matter what the weather,
Romuloxians team together and build any kind of vehicle to carry one
or more persons down Polaski hill (where the tall grass grows
sideways) in the safest, most stylish, and fastest manner.

February 14th - Feels Like Home day - Native Romuloxians are
outnumbered some 5,000 to 1, so we remember our heritage by wearing
the clothing, cooking the meals, and sharing time together learning
the ways of different cultures from our diverse populations countries
of origin.

March 11th - Dossberry Festival - Dossberries, the native fruit, are
perpared and served in thousands of different ways from Dossberry
pancakes and smoothies, to the acquired taste of Dossberry chili and garlic pie. Be sure to stock up on Dossberry liquor as it's in the
perfect season.

April 20th - Marijuana Harvest - Marijuana is not only legalized here,
it's legitimacized. We celebrate with a Cannibus cup competition, and
a day of socializing in hopes of making new friends. Of course, not
everyone participates, and not everyone has judgements. People who do
not enjoy Marijuana smoking, are free to do whatever the people who
don't like Dossberries do during the Dossberry Festival.

May 3rd - Romulympics - Competitions of all sorts and sports are here for the watching and wagering. The finals of the national sport, Bocce, are held, and the 36 hole 3 million dollar miniature golf course, Kirkers', is holding there Minigolf Open finals.

June 18th - Family Day - Call your mom, hug your Dad. Make your
grandparents dinner. Today is the day to embrace family. Long
distance calls are all paid for by the government.

July 13th - Romulox Day - The birthday of our Nation. 7 & 13 are the
numbers of Romulox. 7.13 million dollars in fireworks are purchased,
and all launched in a 7 minute, 13 second pyrotechnics calamity. When
do the fireworks start? 7:13pm, of course! Be sure to arrange a good
spot on one of the three hills; Tatum, Conklin, or Menands for best
viewing results.

August 19th - Cart Prix - Four city blocks between Matrim Avenue and
Linden Street are sectioned off and carts are raced for a 14 hour
marathon. The driver who has driven the farthest amount of distance
in 14 hours, is considered the winner. Many businesses donate prizes
to the winner, and the total prize pool is quite a hefty load.

September 30th - The FEAST - Town square is crammed with people to
enjoy discounted meals from top restaurants in Ballastaire. As long
as you don't mind sharing a picnic table with people you haven't met yet, it's the place to be.

October 11th - Flower Festival - Native flowers take on all sorts of
responsobilities today. Bleeding Hearts are given to sweeties,
DossBlossoms are used to decorate hair, Frentils are used as garnishes
for food. Everything is prettier and smells nice, even the President!

November 22nd - Celtic Seahorse Day - The national animal is honoured
with a parade and the oceanarium is open free to the public, just in
time for birthing season! Come see the majestic Celtic Seahorse as
the males give birth to new fragile natives!

December 18th - Winter Festival - Romuloxians brace for the inevitable. Winter is on it's way and the annual precautions are made. The possibility of violent storms with crippling snow and hail is palpable. Romulox takes the day off to prepare by stocking up on supplies, and making sure the elderly and sick are in good hands and spirits. We have been building our sense of community for this day.

This thread will soon be updated with other important statistics, a draft of the Constitution, the first ever Romuloxian election results, military and defense information and more!

[OoC: I realize that this vision of my country is quite Utopian with all the weapons dealing and wars going about in this forum. Just thought I'd start somewhere, and what better way than with a vision of delight and peace to eventually devolve into a terrorist target that requires vengeance. Or maybe I'll just try to be a diamond in the rough. Who knows how jaded I'll become, and how fast. 8)]

Thank you for your kind invitation to your region. Unfortunately, we will have to decline. Everyone in the Vestistan region is familiar with each other from another avenue.

Please accept this invitation for you and as many as 7 accompanyments to this years Cannabis Cup, April 20th. All expenses, including transportation will be taken care of should you accept.

We are still a fledgling nation, looking for allies and potential tourism customers. Please come and enjoy our land on our dollar, and tell many of your return the fine time you had.

The Commonwealth of Neo Krysten is interested in a friendship with a nation around the same age as our own fledgling nation, and the fruits that such a relationship could provide.

The Commonwealth of Neo Krysten is recognized and complimented in Romulox. In fact, it was your wonderful fact book that gave us the basis of which to write our own. There was many a remark in the nation about the Hive City, and quite a bit of talk from citizens about forming some sort of excursion to see it with their own eyes.

Perhaps, if there is an event here that interests you, surely we could exchange tourists from nation to nation in order to furtherment the betterment of our own citizens.

I will surely send a CC of this note to Candi Valencia, our Director of Entertainment, and she will certainly extend an all expenses paid vacation for 8 of the citizens of Neo Krysten of your choice to come experience the event of their whim.

The Commonwealth of Romulox thanks you for your kind words, and looks forward to a long, healthy, relationship with your kind peoples.

Actually, the office of tourism has investigated these hive cities, and found their citizens to be peaceful, they have no weapons as of yet, and seem to disregard any of our aerial investigations, the tourism office should be providing aerial tours within the next 6 months, and in return we extend the chance for anyone of your choice to accpomany the scientific detachment in 3 weeks, to further investigate.
