Need formula for ship displacement

If this is not the right place for this then I am sorry.
I am interested in starting to design my own ships, but am currently lost. Therfore I am looking for someone who is a good experianced ship builder to steer me in the right direction.

just look at a load of ships and compair displacement with size?
ie Guestimate.

Hmm, well thats all fine and all, but what if I am making a ship much larger that any real nations? This is why I am in need of the formula for displacement. I have been looking all over the place and have only found the formula for displacement in engines.
