If this is the wrong forum to post this question, or if the answer is already documented elsewhere, I apologise and would appreciate a pointer in the right direction.

I'm very interested in the roleplaying aspect of NationStates, but my main concern is one of etiquette: what is the accepted way of involving other nations in the situations you craft? Do you refrain from mentioning other states in your posts until someone else joins you? First ask permission via telegrams? Same goes for joining other people's incidents, although here at least some of the thread titles indicate who can join.

Thanks

I think this is the wrong forum for this. No matter.
I think the best way to get nations involved in RP situations of your invention is to create a really interesting one, and just leave it open. If you create a fan-fic RP, then you might get a lot of response. Smaller nations like yourself may find it difficult to get attention with their own RPs, because other nations don't know how well you can do it. They don't want to waste their time getting involved in an RP that ends with "1 Billi0n N00ks w3r3 launched. Die!" I'm sure you understand. If you get involved in an open RP, then you can gain respect from the community, and more will join your RPs. Addressing your RPs to attract other nations generally comes later. Hope that this helps.

Stay away from storefronts... some may be good, but most are bad influences on new roleplayers on NS

Well said.

After that, read the stickies at the top of the NS and II forums. Watch others, make friends, but above all: Don't become some idiot older nations lapdog. Forge your own way. Alot of newbies coming in lately seem to cling to the big dogs like ticks.

"Blood, sucking little parasitic..." Yeah. :)

But, if you'd like some help, or if you have any questions you can telegram me and I'll be more than happy to help out.

Good that you are interested in this forum and the Roleplay...

I suppose the best way is to read the stickies first, and wander around reading some of the stories that are running around. I would recommend you to keep alowprofile first, and avoid wars and heavy stuff. Of course, forget about storefronts, with the exception of some of them.

The best way to roleplay, anyway, is to agree with the players involved in certain rp and meet the conditions by them...The rest of the rules don't matter as long as you keep with that golden rule.

I am very impressed with the manner you came to us with this. Follow what everyone else said, and you'll do fine. There are a number of helpful stickies, and it is to your advantage to read them. Hope you RP well, hope to see you around.

I think the Gameplay (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=12) forum was set up for threads like this. I could be wrong, though.

Anyway, to answer your question it's tough. You could go for something flashy to get people's attention.

OMG! There's a Planet-Killing Comet Headed Straight For Us!

You could invoke the name of an established role-player.

New Nation Strikes A Blow For Good! Sanctions Imposted on Melkor Unchained!

Parties are pretty popular, but have the downside that every over-acting ham likes to show up and demand recognition for how utterly COOL they are.

New Nation Holds Costume Ball. Open RP.

And so on. As a general rule, I would recommend against the first two examples. The third is doable, but you have to be a pretty good RPer and writer to get over the pitfalls of other folks crashing and hijacking your thread.

A really good way (in my opinion) is take some of your free time (which varies for everyone, I know) to download mIRC or xchat IRC clients and connect to irc.esper.net (port 6667). Join the #nationstates channel and politely introduce yourself. It can be quite a whirlwind, but generally we try to be good to newbies. But if you're arrogant or obnoxious, you're likely to draw quite a lot of flak.

Anyway, be creative and be polite. Those are the catchwords to remember. Don't assume anything about folks you want to RP with (like declaring actions within their nations or deciding consequences for them) and demonstrate your 1337ness through good RP, not by arguing logic..

I disagree slightly with the notion of riding the coat-tails of an established role-player. Making friends with and RPing with veterans can be a good way to get started, just don't become a "yes man" to them. Good stories require conflict, so don't be afraid to disagree or otherwise tangle with folks. Just work it out with them before you start and make sure you keep IC (In Character) and OOC (Out Of Character) separate. It's impossible to do good RP with someone you don't get along with OOCly.

Good luck.

Adding onto Treznor's comment involving MIRC, other channels such as #nationstates_general, #nationstates_technical, and my infamous #nationstates_outcasts are other chats you can consider.

Well, there's The Roleplaying FAQ (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2133) and, of course, The Etiquette Guide (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31892).

A bit about logistics... (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=52356)

And some on diplomacy. (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=55640)

Loop, people who RP are playing the game just as much as you are.
