Recent petitions by the Ministry of Economics to designate a portion of a Xanthalian planet as a free economic zone, an area exempt from the communistic rules that govern the nation, were formally denied by the Xanthalian Triumvirate this morning by a 3/0 vote. "Now is not the time to incorporate a new capitalist element into Xanthalian society," said Triumvir Phillip Bakutso after the vote was held. "The disaster of the Economic Privitization Act is still fresh in our minds, and the people do not need another blow to their society."
"Although Xanthal is committed to increasing freedoms wherever possible, further privatization would endanger the government's support network. If cracks were to form in the glass floor, our entire system would collapse," spoke Triumvir Erica Quoss. "It is best for everyone if we focus on improving civil and political freedoms at this time."
The Xanthalian Ministry of Economics' proposal was killed in the Council last week with a 7/5 vote against the creation of a free economic zone, and the Triumvirate's decision was the death knell for the proposal. Ministry head Kaze Urashima issued a statement to the press this afternoon regarding his feelings on the subject. "As a Minister in this government, I do what I feel best benefits my people. As a Minister in the government, I am subject to the approval of my peers. I and my advisors felt that the creation of a free economic zone would improve the Republic's economic position, and I put the proposal before the Council. With the rejection of the proposal by both branches of the government, I am obligated to put the idea aside. I wish to express my continued confidence in the Xanthalian government; my peers in the Council and the Triumvirate. I also wish to reassure the Xanthalian people that the rejection of this act presents no danger to our already above-average economy. In the future, I and my staff will continue to work to improve our nation's financial situation every day so that the Xanthalian people can continue to enjoy the lifestyle they have come to expect." The Minister did not take questions regarding future plans for increasing economic freedoms for the people.
Perhaps the Minister of Social Affairs, who voted against the free economic zone last week, described the Xanthalian government's position best. "The Socialist Republic of Xanthal is an institution. We are a nation where there are no poor, no downtrodden. If we privitize the economy then we lose that. Xanthal is as close as most nations will ever get to utopia, and if that stops then we have lost our greatest achievement."
