Rykia Abolishes Political Parties

27-04-2004, 03:43
RYKESGRAD - The Rykian Parliament voted in favor of abolishing formal political parties in a move that comes as no surprise to the political establishment in the capital. Prime Minister Retherton supports the measure as a sign of the growing importance of a unitary government in the developing Rykian state.

Opposition to the measure was surprisingly light, as the goal of a unitary state has been one rallying cry of the people as their new state is formed. Despite calls that the end of political parties means the end of the government, Retherton in public remarks made clear his intention of striving for a cabinet that would include all points of view and has thus singled out Ivan Grushev and Ashley Thomason from his former opposition party to be his Minister of Defense and Interior, respectively.

Retherton praised the vote and celebrated the historic vote with the announcement of a parade in honor of the people of Rykia.

Did you do this via an issue?

no... the issue that came up... so many days ago, i forget... was one suggeting the banning of donations to political parties... i took that route and i ended up with some sort of statement on country's profile about a nation of fiercly patriotic people... something to that effect... consequently i figured that given a medium sized moralistic government of a fiercly patriotic people... and being socialist... that the elimination of the concept of political parties would be interesting. Of course, in the long run governance by elected officials requires some sort of popular infrastructure and so the idea of eliminating parties is merely the ideal state of government. It's an idea I intend on playing around with in the future...
