Prologue to Something Major

2245 March 17th, 2014 - Dill Row/Todeskopf border

The E-21 flew a level orbit, peering into Todeskopf on a fairly standard SigInt mission. Inside the mission room a young Warrent Officer looked over his console.

Turn on the target generator, let's see how long it takes for them to react.

The Systems Officer typed some commands into his console and almost instantaneously he knew on the Todeskopfian radars four fighter sized objects would be appearing, flying supersonically for about twenty kilometres before disappearing.

About five minutes later they got four blips on their radars, fighters had taken off.

Bogeys! We have bogeys on screen!, the radar officer yelled across the room.

Almost instantly the station supervisor, a Colonel was at his side.

Yes, it seems that we have four fighters on screen, heading 260° at 1 200km/h. Good work.

He picked up the phone and made a call out.

We have bandits at heading 260°, travelling at 1 200km/h. Detected in sector A47. Scramble fighters to identify and escort these aircraft out.

Minutes later four Black Widow FA. 1 fighters rolled off the runway en route to intercept the aircraft.

They've taken off, five minutes from signal being detected to launch, they've been practising. Turn off the signal generator, we're done for the night.

The target generator went off but they continued to track the Todeskopfian fighters as they neared the border. The E-21 changed course so as to be deeper within friendly territory, just to be safe.

Sir, you know you're entering enemy airspace, right?

Yes, yes I do. We're going to find those fighters and destroy them, they couldn't of gotten far.

The Black Widows crossed over into Haaregradian airspace expecting to quickly locate some older F-33E Sniper fighters, instead their radars remained blank.

Maybe they've gone cloaked? Number Three, switch over to plasma detector mode and we'll databus our systems together.

The detector was blank.

The radar warning receiver lit up on the #2 pilot's instruments.

Sir, they have a lock.

Before he got a reply there were three bright flashes towards him, followed by explosions. Past his head whipped glowing telephone pole that twisted to bear down on him. He banked as hard as he could, dodging the missile as it exploded, throwing shrapnel towards his fighter.

He turned back to home, not knowing how to best convey that he was the only survivor.

Bandits closing, confirmed from E-21 #22-9956. Four Black Widow fighters at bearing 70°, range 200km and closing, speed 1 500km/h.

The radar officer watched the screen intently, waiting for them to come 'too close' to the Lumov Test Site. The fighters passed closer and closer. Finally he looked over and gave the order,

Fire three S400s, that will make a good warning.

The SAMs lept off of their launcher towards the Todeskopfian fighters, they were to remain undetected until the end.

0900 March 18th, 2014 - Kaiser's Morning Address

Yesterday, the liberal scum in Haaregradia downed two of our majestic fighters after attacking them with swarms of their inferior fighters, flown by cowards. This act of murder and cowardous will not be punished lightly. We are closing all rail lines that lead into Haaregradia.

Additionally we ask our allies to join with us in condemning this attack on our majestic nation by imposing economic sancations against these cowards.

To the rest of the world we ask that they condemn the oppressive leadership in Haaregradia for this act of war.

Let them know that acts of this nature cannot be tolerated, even when hypocritical, pinko scum commit them. We will not raise the rail blockades until reparations of $1 000 000 000 are paid, to cover the loss of life and equipment, as well as to compensate our nation and the pilots families.

Welfare victory! One nation! One people! One leader!

Premier Romanov watched the Kaiser's address from his room in the new Politburo building. It was a new addition to the downtown square, built on the site where the democratically elected Parliament had once stood. When Romanov took power, he disbanded the Parliament and appointed members of his party to take over governmental functions. Romanov, more recently a General in the Grand Army of Briandom, already had the military on his side at the time of the coup. Briandom's citizens were powerless to prevent this, as the previous liberal government had made the nation completely gun free, and most were brainwashed into pacifism anyway.

Romanov was happy to have Todeskopf as his neighbor to the east, and he recently signed a non aggression pact with his comrades. Now if only he could keep those other liberal nations in Socialist Paradise off his back...

When it was announced that Haaregrad had shot down two of Todeskopf's planes, he was unsure of what to do at first. Briandom was in the midst of modernizing its military, after the previous "president" had reduced Briandom's strength in favor of world unity. Now they were advancing their technology and draft rates, but Romanov was not ready to involve his country in a major battle. If only there was a way to stall, he thought.

He decided to make an announcement to his comrades. Romanov called the new state-run television station and was given a spot on every station. He walked over to his statement room.

The cameras came on. He began. "Comrades! Good morning! I come to you today with sad news of our beloved neighbors in Todeskopf. It seems that the Socialists in Haaregradia have shot down two of their planes in random acts of violence. Our neighbors have done nothing wrong.

The Haaregradians are out for their blood, and then they will come for ours! I call you to arms, Comrades! If provoked, we will rid the region of socialist scum!

"For Briandom!"

Romanov turned and walked away from the podium as the red light on the camera turned off. There were no reporters allowed in the new Politburo building, and if Romanov ever did give a press conference, the questions would be prepared and handed to them. Reporters that didn't follow the script would find their names not on the front page, but in the obituaries.

1803 March 28th, 2014 - Haaregradian News Network

This upcoming election has turned into the most heated one we've seen in years. Vladimir Lenin's Socialist Party is running in an almost dead heat with Andrei Reagan's National Front Party. Both parties have shot to the lead with the only chance at opposition coming from the Centre Party, headed by Corey Haim.

Lenin and Reagan have been exchanging heated rhetoric over the past few days over everything from proposed economic reforms to the situation with Todeskopf.

The screen changes to a clip of Vladimir Lenin speaking at a Socialist Party fundraiser about how the National Front Party will change Haaregradia for the worst.

The Nationalists are a threat to our way of life. The very freedoms we hold so dear, that define us as a nation, they wish to change. We already spend huge amounts on defense, we are able to defend ourselves from ANY nation on this planet.

They want to increase our police forces well beyond what is needed. Why waste money on more police when there is almost no crime? I'll tell you why! Andrei Reagan knows that in order to enforce the stripping of our rights and freedoms he's going to need to arrest alot of people. To do this he's going to need more police.

They want to strip our acceptance of immigrants, our devotion to liberty and justice and freedom.

The screen changes back to the anchor.

Presidential hopeful Andrei Reagan countered with this.

The screen cuts to Reagan as he addresses possible voters at an university.

Mr. Lenin doesn't know what he is up against. This nation is slowly turning into a spineless, liberal morass. The last thing we need is more taxes, the last thing I will do is raise more taxes. We need more police to crack down on the crime that immigrants bring to our nation.

When I was growing up I used to see Haaregradia as the strongest nation in the world, but we've let it slip. We need to make Haaregradia yet again the centre of our region, the best, strongest nation on earth. We need to have the strength to make sure any part of the world can be molded to suit us.

I want to see Haaregradia march bravely into the future. The Socialists want us to collapse like Rome under a wave of liberalism as we pick fights with our neighbours, like in Todeskopf.

Premier Romanov sat at his desk and watched the political banter from both sides in the Haaregradian election. Some of the other Politburo members were there, but most had gone home for the day. The Treasury Minister was there, and Romanov turned to him.

"How much do we have in 'the fund,' Andrey?"

"We can spare a few million People's Credits," he replied.

"Good. I want you to start funneling money to the Reagan campaign in Haaregradia. We have some businesses there, and I'm sure a few 'subsidiaries' could make some donations. In the meantime, put out a statement supporting Reagan."

"Right away, Comrade Premier."

"Admiral Spiridov, I think we should start some more training exercises in the north, preferably by the Haaregradians," Romanov said to the interim leader of Manganmark. Briandom had come to Manganmark's help after a bloody coup, and Admiral Spiridov had basically become the governer of a large state under Briandom's control-- much like Alaska is to the United States.

"Yes, Comrade Premier. We can try out our new STOVL carriers and experimental planes."

"Excellent. We're also going to be running exercises in the bay of Briandom/Todeskopf ((or whatever it's called)). We'll test out some of our long-range fighters."

"Comrade Premier, if Haaregradia elects Reagan, the whole northeast of Socialist Paradise would be at an advantage over the rest of the region."

"I know, Admiral. That's why we must work now to secure out future."

"I serve the State," Spiridov said. He hung up the phone and began preparing for his exercises.

1445 March 29th, 2014 - Electorial Debate

Andrei Reagan stood at the podium looking very confident. With the new infusions of cash into his parties accounts he had more then enough money to paint Vladimir Lenin as a warmonger and a coward who secretly wanted to oppress people with higher taxes and food shortages. The economy was good, better then it had ever been in fact, but Reagan knew if he could paint the right picture he would win.

Through Mr. Lenin's warmongering policies he has alienated neighbours and former allies. The Socialists have left the nation too weak to defend ourselves, yet they keep trying to push us into fights. If you are so dedicated to freedom why do you insist on forcing neighbours to accept socialist reforms? Is that no worse then how, in your views, capitalism oppresses them?

Lenin glared back, he looked tired, but still full of fight. He stared down Reagan for a moment before replying:

When has the government of Haaregradia forced any nation to accept Socialist reforms? Are we not treading partners with many capitalist nations, like New York and New Jersey? Have I not attempted, personally, to improve relations with numerous Nationalist nations? Your party's manifesto makes it clear your end goal is to turn us into a Fascist Dictatorship. Haaregradia was founded on Socialist ideals, even now it is clear to most people that Socialism makes us all better off.

Jello Biafra of the Green Party cut in.

Mr. Reagan, in your all knowing power you must be able to explain this.

Biafra pulled from a knapsack a stack of documents.

Reagan turned to face him.

Now what are those, some sort of liberal lies?

Biafra held them up in front of him.

These are a list of your campaign donations, including some that originated from our very neighbourly dictatorships, Briandom and Todeskopf. Are you planning to sell us out to them? We need more protections in our democratic process to keep things like this from happening again.

The moderator interupted him.

I'm sorry Mr. Biafra, now is not the time for allegations of those sorts.

Reagan shot a dirty look Biafra's way as the moderator started again.

Now, Mr. Reagan, how do you intend on improving Haaregradia for the future?

Reagan looked straight into the camera, he seemed slightly shaken by Biafra's claims but quickly recovered.

It's simple. We need to open up our economy and improve the strength of our military and police, without these all the taxes we are collecting are being wasted. Social security is mostly wasted on people too lazy to work. How does this help our working classes? Nationalism, a stronger military and a freer economy will only serve to help our nation as we strive into the future.

The camera switched back onto the moderator as he posed the same question to Lenin. Lenin looked stronger then ever, at what he saw as a chink in the Nationalist's seemingly inpenatrable armour.

Our vision for the future is clear. The faster our economy grows, the more chance it has to collapse. The more chance it has to collapse the more people will be hurt. The only solution I can see to this is to ensure the economy grows at a sustainable rate. Setting a solid foundation for future growth can keep us healthy now. Additionally, more tax money could be freed up if more people were working. We plan on introducing a program of 100% employment if re-elected. You will find a job if you want a job, that is my pledge.

The money freed from this can be further invested, and another tax cut can be given. Taxes have fallen during the time I have been in office. It is a blatent lie to claim otherwise. The nation needs a trustworthy, experianced leader for the road ahead. I believe I am that leader.

Damn, Romanov thought to himself. The new laws in Briandom would have allowed the Green Party candidate to be shot for treason if an accusation, albeit true, were made about the Premier.

The exercises were heating up now. Two carrier groups from Manganmark were poised along the edges of Haaregradian waters, just far enough away to make things seem normal. Well, normal for a large-scale military exercise anyway.

In the Bay of Death's Head, the new fighters were running their training missions as well. They skirted along the Todeskopfian border but didn't cross any boundaries. They kept to themselves, but the E-767 was keeping an eye on the Haaregradian horizon as well.

Things seemed to be going normally enough, and those who were less informed would probably think Briandom was flexing its muscles to influence the Haaregradian elections. They had no idea.

Meanwhile, the regional bullet train station was slightly more busy than usual.

We are planning a massive strike into Haaregradia. The liberals will pay for their affront to our honour. The first stage of the attack will be a blitzkrieg on the city of Kiosk, which is a major rail hub. If we take Kiosk then 50% of the food from Dill Row will be unable to flow north into the rest of Haaregradia, this will weaken their war fighting abilities.

Additionally we're going to require large numbers of ships positioned to strike against Haaregradian shipping, which will keep them from getting supplies.

Delegates from the above nations are asked to arrive in Skull by 0600 tommorow, to begin further discussions of our operation. This must occur on the timeline given.

It was beginning to look like the week ahead would be troubling for Admiral Gorshkov, especially since he was the guy in charge of Briandom's naval operations throughout the region.

Earlier that night, Admiral Spiridov, Manganmark's interim leader, had flown in and was now on the bridge of the SB Red Badge, the fleet flagship. They were putting out to sea, presumably to oversee the operations on Manganmark's side of the Haaregradian border. Their position would be in international waters, but close enough to Haaregradia to launch an attack, if warranted.

Meanwhile, three of the bullet train passengers stepped off at the station in Skull. Two were dressed in suits-- one nice and one cheap. They both carried briefcases to match the degree of their clothes. The third was dressed casually and carried a backpack. They carried no diplomatic papers, but the only diplomacy they needed was within reach-- safeties off with a bullet already in the chamber.

They made their ways separately to the meeting place, with staggered arrivals.

We would prefer to not strike first with ballistic missiles. After all, we are surrounded by hostile powers, and Haaregradia is quite adament about their policy of not having nuclear weapons; meaning, if we nuked them it could bring almost the entire regions nuclear stockpiles down on our heads which isn't going to help anyone. Non-nuclear ballistic missiles wouldn't be cost effective. the Chancellor explained.

The Kaiser butted in, I want them to feel the pain of being defeated fairly. Besides, we can't colonize Haaregradia if it's been turned to glass.

Field Marshal Rommel walked in, in his dress uniform. He greeted the men in turn and spoke to the Kaiser directly.

Sir, the troops are in place and undergoing 'exercises'. The Haaregradians, as expected, are whining about it. With the exception of some border posts there won't be any soldiers close enough to launch a counter-attack long enough to save Kiosk. We expect the city will fall within hours.

"Excellent... A full scale war with some of our closest allies. They'll never expect it, and hopefully we'll catch them plenty off guard.

"We can devote the entire armies of Manganmark, but we must keep some of Briandom's military at the Cav border... because they have fought before in the region-- partially to save our asses. They will probably jump in on Haaregrad's side, and Briandom will find itself in the midst of a two front war. We must keep a hefty percentage of our military in western Briandom, or we will lose the country.

"We have thousands of tanks and millions of troops, and the logistics don't look too bad on this. We can start moving some things through Todeskopf, but the satellites will pick up on us quickly. I say we hold more 'training exercises' that would simulate a large scale war between Briandom and Todeskopf. That way, we can position things and then turn and run for Dill Row. They'll think it's because we're trying to show favoritism towards Reagan, and well, they couldn't be more right."

"I guess the only way for Briandom to be secure is to have more forces in defense than at attack." Chin listened closely to the only voice from Briandom that he's ever heard. "A war on two fronts screwed Germany over twice. We can't let that happen. Best if you keep your navy's role as mainly defensive ("Green Water") to prevent a naval blockade."

OFE = Operation: Forced Entry

Kovel is a large town east of Kiosk, almost on the Dill Row/Metropolis Industries border, the second K in Kiosk is right on top of it.

April 1st, 2014 - Kaiser's War Room

Chancellor Adolf frist addressed the Sinoese delegate, We would like to have at least some Sinoese vessels and troops in position by OFE Day. If this is not possible we would like to see Sinoese troops making up part of our second offensive, which will be an attack on the town of Kovel.

Then he turned to the delegate from Briandom, The population of Manganmark might go into rebellion if too many forces are drawn out, no? You should be careful to not let your grip on the nation slip, as that would certainly not help us. The last thing we need are the Haaregradians claiming to 'liberate' Manganmark. Additionally, we wish for troops from Briandom to assist in the second offensive.

Next Rommel addressed the whole room, We've seen how wars have been lost before. We need to strike so hard and so fast that they don't see it coming, and keep enough troops in reserve to protect ourselves. Studying the past and learning from others mistakes it what will let us win here.

"I agree with my Sinoese comrade. Briandom needs more defense forces, and if anything, will act as a buffer state between the war and Cav. We will give them major logistical problems, especially if we blockade the ocean. We could even set up an entire line blocking the strait between Cav and Carfy. Carfy's navy is nothing to be afraid of, and Cav will have to fight a major naval battle, or they will have to take their fleet around Carfy. I'd assume they'd pick the latter, but it'll take them a lot longer to get aid to Haaregrad.

"We will beef up our western forces and prepare our major routes in case Cav decides to barrel through Briandom."

He paused and waited for the representative from Manganmark to give his input.

"Here's what Manganmark's situation looks like. Our army can make it to Haaregrad, or we can go through Silberklinge. I have a feeling the Haaregradians will respond with great force to the battle we will wage in the south. If that happens, we can position our army in northern Haaregrad and slowly close in on their troops. They will be trapped and their country will fall. And Manganmark is such a 'liberal' nation that the Haaregradians probably won't even think about our involvement. We are considered a subsidiary state of Briandom, under our own rule with Briandom's influence through Admiral Spiridov. He is thought to have only a meaningless title, but Spiridov has the ears of the armed forces... and the nuclear missile codes. Not that it'll come to that, but I wanted you to know exactly what kind of power he yields."

"I am afraid a heavy commitment of Sinoese troops on OFE day would be impossible. Two Sinoese divisions are arriving by ship in a week's time. But as the war progresses on, tanks, APCs and even aircraft will come in. We have three destroyers escorting the troop ships. they will also be involved once they dock in Todeskopf." He pauses. "We know that a blitzkrieg is the best medicine but we must also prepare for stalemate and further enemy involvements and other scenarios only known as alternatives but in the face of warfare, who knows? If we do not suceed in the first wave, this will drag on."

He pauses for a sip of water.

"What allies does Haaregrad have? They may be liberal but their conventional forces do not lack in numbers or technology. This is not comparable of Nazi Germany's attack on Poland, but more like Nazi Germany versus Cold War USSR! We must over estimate to win, men."

It's quite fine that our Sinoese allies will miss the first attack, they will be fresher as they move on Kovel, and the road to Kiosk should be clear by then. We want to make sure we cut off their grain supplies from the south first, before we try to make a move on Haaregrad City.

Field Marshall Rommel showed some pictures of Haaregradian troops taking up position well inside the nation and completely out of the line of attack. Either incompetance, ignorance or a strange scheme indeed was lurking inside Haaregradia.

A Sinoese tank brigade arrives in Todeskopf. Two weeks after General Chin setting foot on Sino's new ally.

The Type 98s became a real problem to be hidden for long. Originally it was thought to be best driven to their new warehouses in the dark hours of early morning but it was soon discovered at dawn that there is a column of tanks parading like a Sinoese National Day parade.

"This is not looking good." Chin could only comment nervously to his fellow delegates. Looking at a video footage from Todeskopfian public news sources of the Sinoese arrival.

1200 April 2nd, 2014 - Haaregrad City

Vladimir Lenin sat facing the TV camera, he had to make the hardest speech of his life. He had to tell the Haaregradian people that they had been attacked, that they were so far losing badly and that on the election day the vote had to be cancelled in order to preserve stability.

Greetings Comrades, please do not panic, but for those of you who didn't yet know our glorious state is now under attack from the fascists of Todeskopf. The situation is already not looking pretty, but we must have hope. We will defeat the fascists. We will drive them back to their deaths. This is not a choice but neccessity. If we cannot defeat the Todeskopfians now then all of the Northern Seas will decend into a new dark ages.

It is unfortunate but at this time the Pan-Haaregradian Council has seen fit to suspend the election indefinately, until the fascist menace has been dealt with. However I must ask each single citizen, do not dispare. Turn your faces not into the shadows but face the enemy directly. We cannot surrend, we will never surrender. Our freedom will shine like a beacon against these enemies.

Dispare not that we have to struggle but stand proud that our trials now might see a more peaceful future, filled with freedom for our children. We mustn't submit, now or ever to tyranny. We must let our sacrifices shine on for all to remember.

OOC: Todeskopf, nice tribute to Reagan

IC: "Curses! The Haaregradians aren't playing into the whole southern front war!" Admiral Spidirov had hoped he could move into Haaregrad from Manganmark if things became a little more lax on the border.

Meanwhile, the Premier stepped onto the Grand Balcony to make his speech to the masses. "Comrades! We have finally managed to muster enough of our collectivism to take on those evil fascists in Haaregrad! Right now, our forces are meeting up with those of Todeskopf, and we are slowly making our way into Haaregradia!

"Did you know that they have a saying in Haaregradia that roughly translates to 'Man, I love pitchforking live babies?' Well they do! And it's not just a figure of speech! Therefore, we must all work together to see that no more babies are pitchforked! Men: enlist today! Women: cook for your men like you've never cooked before! There's a war to be won, and we can't do it on empty stomachs!"

The crowd cheered as Romanov walked away from the balcony, then headed to the conveniently located enlistment stations.

OOC: Sino, what's your navy like? What's it's main role and how many capital ships do you have and of what types?

OOC:

Bugger me, I'm not a fan of naval systems. Most of the cargo ships are ACS (amred cargo ships). Despite being slightly vulnerable systems, generally there is about two missile boats for every4 ACSs and one frigate for every five. ACS (based on an actual Chinese naval system) are capable surface attackers versatile for MBTs, a variety of artillery pieces, SAMs and TBMs.

The ACS crew are usually mix between ARSA, ARSMC and ARSN. Most of the ARSA and ARSMC personnel are artillerymen infantry guards. The sailor being fit only for their purposes. Many of the ACS equipment are likely to be unloaded at port, returning back to Sino for more.

There is also a wolfpack (30% diesel-electric) of subs guarding the convoy but none of them are SLBM capable. Air defense is lagging but interceptors can be called from Todeskopf. There is currently 40 ACS (desguided as regular cargo ships with the crew in civvies) and 50 transport/supply vessels (which are poorly defended). The supplies en route are mostly artilleries, MBTs and men.

The main role of its presence is to ensure that Sinoese men and supplies are transported to the conflict area as swiftly as possible (thus explaining the lack of surface defense).

Interesting to note, I must warn you I've got a pretty substantial navy and have since I could afford it... on the other hand many of the vessels are 1990-2005 era, but 20 year old vessels have alot of upgrades to them, especially here. And I do have new designs coming along quickly.
