He stepped up to the podium. His beard silvery and stylishly trimmed. His wrinkles added distinction to the personality stored in his head. Standing at five foot two, he reached up to the microphone and readjusted its height to better compensate for his vertically challenged body.
The podium overlooked a vast stadium filled with many people, all looking up at their short leader. The place was eeriely quiet as they awaited his words...
"People of Karzir. For many years, we have suffered under the rule of the former dictatorship. For fewer years, we fought to depose that regime.
Did we fight for our freedom?
Many of you think we did. You would be incorrect. Freedom is an irrelevence. It serves no purpose in society.
Did we fight for a democracy?
Many of you think we did. You might be correct. Today, I announced to the world the creation of a new Karzir. A new government, a new regime. No longer shall we be a dictatorship. We shall be a Utilitarian Republic!
All hail the Utilitarian Republic of Karzir!"
The people were unsure as to this cryptic proclamation. What could he trully mean? Is not democracy; freedom? They cheered anyway, at least the horrors of the old regime were gone, nothing could be any worse?
"I sense that you are all troubled. I concur with you, my statement did seem cryptic. Allow myself to better elaborate on what I said earlier.
I said I don't believe in freedom. Of that I am sure. Freedom for the sake of freedom is not practical. Without order, there is chaos. With chaos there is no progress.
But I still believe in a democracy. A democracy is a rule of the people though only when it is compulsory. That is practical. If everyone participates, then all can share their ideas witht he government and the government can better govern the country. It is that simple.
But what of Utilitarianism? To the Utilitarian Party that now governs this country, we seek only to employ techniques that are useful. If a factor in society has no purpose then it is useless. This does however mean that we are against leisure in all forms. We believe that leisure is merely giving into the temptations that affect our mind and to do this will only bring short term happiness to the people. We seek to create long term happiness for the people through the promotion of a stoic existence.
How do we hope to do this? More clearly, we believe that a man must determine his purpose; to understand why he is here. With understanding comes enlightenment and with enlightenment comes a sense of personal and long lasting bliss. We intend to give man purpose. A man is the sum of his work. Through work, he can define himself in society and become trully happy rather than live in the empty and thankless existence of pleasure that erodes the very senses.
I am sure that many of you are still unsure as to what I speak of, but all shall become to clear to you in time. Many hardships are ahead of us, many fixes must be made to the old ways. But we shall prevail, thankyou."
He took a bow and left the podium. The people quietly and reflectively left the stadium.
