The Socialist Republic of Xanthal extended its laws protecting free speech today by abolishing the Verbal Discrimination Act, passed in 2392 to protect Xanthalians from unfair ridicule. "The VDA was poorly thought-out," said Minister of Justice Ziona Filmore when asked about the decision. "In our goal of extending civil fredoms as far as possible, it was counterproductive. Because of the difficulty involved in enforcing it, and the problems it created for management positions, the Ministry of Justice saw this as the right time to do away with an outdated piece of leglislation."
The Ministry of Justice began a month ago the first total review of Xanthalian law in history, pledging to modernize the lawbooks and extend civil freedoms as much as possible in what is expected to be a two year endeavour. Minister Filmore has, in her time as ministry head, already overseen the abolishment of almost fifty outdated laws and passed far-reaching leglislation ensuring Xanthalian civil freedoms.
