Howahkan awoke in his Quarters. It was a mix of Modern Technology and Ancient customs in buildings. His name meant "of the mysterious voice" in the Sioux Language, and he was the chosen Headman of his Tribe/Nation.
He walked outside into the Forest Setting, and cleansed himself in the River, the chilled water waking him from the Evenings slumber. The morning was grey, with clouds barley visible through forest canopy. As he was washing, his cell phone went off on his pile of clothes on the Riverbank. Many modern nations would find this sight quite strange, or at least think that perhaps this Native American was on a Spirit Journey, or some stereotype like that.
But these were the Tribes that resisted the European Onslaught of Territorial Expansion, they had lost millions of their people hundreds of years ago, to battles and wars. But many, many more to the new diseases that these people had brought. And in the early 1800's, by the white mans years, which most of the Unified Tribes of Wolvesrayne had adopted by now in 2004, Many of the Great Plains, Great Basin and Southwest tribes, from as far west as Arizona, and far south as Florida, finally united and used the Europeans Technology against themselves.
For a time, things were good. The Americans, as they called themselves, learned to repsect the Native Peoples, who most were willing to share the land with, though obviously not the other way around with them.
For a time, the tribes began to fall into the ways of Capitalism, and pursuit of Technology, the once-ways began too vanish, and hundreds upon thousands of Tribesman, either in the name of Defending thier Borders, or plain disillusionment with thier own cultures, became their enemy.
Than in the early 1900's with only few left who rembered the ways of old, called upon for a great reform, too return too a harmony with ones enviroment, and remember who they were. But the problem was obvious, if they were to do this, what would stop their neighbors from coming to take thier lands once more?
And for many weeks, the Leaders and Representatives of the many tribes discussed and argued among themselves of what should be done, and one by one they came to an agreement. A compromise would have to be reached, things could not be as they once were, but they could at least defend thier territory without losing their way. Certain amounts of Areas would be dedicated to the Production of Technology, and others, such as forests, holy sites, etc. would be allowed to run, as the Great Father saw fit.
And for a time things were good. The Wolvesrayne People began too return to the former spiritual ways, and less and less fell into the ranks of Scientists and Soldiers.
And of course the inevitable occured, in the middle of the 20th Century, the Wolvesrayne fell behind in Technology, and Europeans marched back into the Territory of the Unified Tribes. War, plague, and famine took over more than quarter of their vast territories. And for three long years the people suffered, until a great Leader appeared, and arose a vast army in a matter of months, and drove the Pale-Skins from their lands once more.
There was a time of rebuilding, and than, suddenly, when everyone least expected. The Pale-Skins opened negotioations, after hundreds of years of war, the two sides finally spoke to one another, and for Decades too follow, an uneasy truce became a deep friendship, borders opened between the two, though the two sides were still different in values, culture and customs, trading opened, and both sides flourished.
And it was on this day that Howahkan, would be proclaimed the new leader of the tribes.
