OVERVIEW
The primary space superiority fighter of the Largent Forces, the SA-43 Endo/Exo Atmospheric Attack Jet gets its more common designation of 'Hammerhead' from its resemblance to a Hammerhead Shark. Also known as 'Hammer' or 'Zoomey', the SA-43 performs a wide variety of mission profiles, including interception, combat space patrol, air support and colonial defence. Powered by an advanced He3-fuelled SCRAM engine (Supersonic Combustion RAMjet), the Hammerhead is capable of take-off from inside an atmospheric envelope to trans-orbital insertion and subsequent ACM (Air Combat Manoeuvring, or dogfighting) activities.
WEAPONRY
» An electro-magnetic railgun mounted on an extended chin gimbal, which is able to cover a 50-degree arc of fire from the front of the ship.
» Mounted to cover the rearward quarter are two smaller railguns in an automatic target-seeking turret.
» The SA-43 has six hard-points on its wings for the mounting of missiles, bombs or instrument modules. The most common load is the Spartan space-to-space missile.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT
» To ease repair times in the field, the SA-43 uses modular components that can quickly be removed and replaced if a malfunction occurs - like many of the primary systems, the fighter's single-seat cockpit unit is designed to detach, enabling it to be mounted in a launch bay for pilot entry or egress prior to fighter launch from a carrier. The self-contained module also doubles as an escape pod, which can be ejected in an emergency.
» The SA-43 features a long-range configurable LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) scanner, capable of tracking 100 independant targets and engaging the same, a holographic head-up display (HUD) for combat intelligence and an optical disc playback unit (ODP) for mission data records.
