The Slaver Kingdom Arises from the Ashes

West African States
15-04-2004, 02:38
There was once a time when the Fon peoples of the Dahomey Kingdom and the Akan peoples of the Asante Kingdom were great rivals. Both rivaled to attain European business in the slave trade. Both had fierce militaries. Both faced destruction by European colonization.

But now, as the year 2020 approaches, the Ouidah Corporation is proud to announce the reformation of the former kingdoms, including the buffer zone -- Togoland. The population consists of roughly 32 million inhabitants; about 80,000 being military personnel.

Funds are low at the moment, but the Ouidah have an interesting offer to make to the foreigners.

The West African States have a surprising abdundance of tradable goods; most importantly gold and ivory. Any nation wishing to sign a contract may do so with the consent of the Asantehene, also known as the CEO of Ouidah -- Agaja Dagbo. Diplomatic exchanges as well as trade deals can be made in the capital city of Kumasi, sub-capital of Abomey, or Ouidah headquarters in Ouidah, Dahomey. We are most interested in the importation of Russian military weapons and automobiles.

We await your counter-offers with great trepidation.

Perhaps the peoples of NationStates would be more interested if we offered our supply of slaves as another trade product. We have some 200,000 exportable slaves, well-built and skilled in manual labor.

Prices range from 2,000 Africaine Francs to 5,000 Africaine Francs. The slaves are all healthy, clean, and well-fed. The slaves are exported from the port city of Ouidah, Dahomey -- headquarters of the Ouidah Corporation.

Does this interest anyone now? Contracts can include the exportation of slaves along with the gold and ivory. But, if you sign a contract involving slave trade, we expect heavy weapons, small arms, and expensive quality fabrics in return.

Remember, slave trade is not a necessity; however, it is an option.

The Commonwealth is shocked and disgusted at the proposed slave trade offered by the Ouidah Corporation. We demand an investigation into the 'readyness' of this trade and warn the Corporation that any nation engaging in the trade of slaves will be the target of many anti-slavery organisations, as well as the recipient of UN sanctions.

Message from the Minister of Finance and Revenue, to the Ouidah.

Having discussed this matter with my colleagues on the Council of Four, we have determined that the use of imported slaves may be beneficial to a certain project currently in the planning stages. Though we have had several volunteers from our own brave Paladins among the Glorious Martyr Division, we believe that less valuable assets should be sacrificed at this time. This project has an expected human attrition rate of 66%.

General Richter, Minister of War, has specified that such slaves as can be considered candidates must be able to lift at least 200 pounds, and run 5km in under fifteen minutes, carrying same. They must also have good hand-eye coordination, a basic grasp of map reading, some technical skill, and some skill with gunnery and small arms.

Inquisitor General Marcellus, and Cadinal Klein, High Minister of Law, require a certain pliability of will among the slaves, to prevent them from spreading subversive heresies, or in taking up arms against their Isidonian overseers.

While we are capable of handling most aspects of the re-education needed to produce a docile slave, it would help matters greatly if most of the goods being imported met the above criteria before delivery.

As only twenty to thirty subjects shall be required for these tests, we believe that a simple cash transaction will be the most efficient means of settling accounts. Please contact us if you have any subjects meeting the necessary requirements.

The Western Asian State Department has issued a stern warning to Ouidah:

Noting the blatant disregard for the inherent freedoms of all human beinggs, we must condemn the Ouidah Corporation slave mongering. The Ouidah company must realize that Western Asia and many other countries are dedicated to the important principle of essential human freedom. We are prepared to intervene using whatever means necessary to end this cruel marketing of human misery for personal profit. We encourage the WAS government to prevent the Ouidah Corporation from carrying out their plans.

Efforts to export the slaves will be intercepted. Until further notice, WA forces are being deployed to patrol in the area and to monitor the WAS area and specifically those of Ouidah Corporation assets.

We note with growing concern that the nation of Isidon has agreed to be involved in the slave trade. We urge you to desist in this matter, otherwise Chimaea, as part of the Anti-Slavery League [RF Amerigo], will be forced to take action to halt the trading of slaves by whatever means appropriate.

As a precaution, we have sent two carrier groups to the nearest international waters, one to West African States and the other to Isidon.

The trading of slaves is in direct violation of UN resolutions.

It is a necessity, albeit a sad one, that expendable human subjects be used in these earily tests. Rest assured that all survivors will be granted status as free citizens, second class, according to the Laws of Penitence, which allow heretics to re-enter society after performing a service to the God Emperor and the Holy Nation.

We applaud the words of Yurka, a truly brave nation, which believes in West Africa's right to sovereignty. We regret that Chimea and Western Asia have taken up such an obviously hostile stance, and seek to strip away the West African States' rights to govern their people as they see fit.

While we had hoped for a peaceful transaction, in light of recent statements, all vessels involved in the transport of Isidonian property (that being, goods for which payment has already been completed) between West Africa and the Holy Nation, will be escorted by gyroships from the Isidonian Air Corps, at a ratio of at least two to one. These ships will act to defend Isidonian interests in West Africa, and will only use force in response to force.

We urge Yurka and the Resi Corporation to act with us, in defending our mutual interest in this matter.

Blah, blah, blah. We've all heard it before. Listen, for one, neither foreign nations nor the intrusive UN have any business in what goes on in our nation. We aren't even members of the United Nations to top it off. Anti-slavery coalitions are disgusting; they speak of freedom yet fail to allow the slaver nation to trade freely. We are a sovereign body; it's our body, we can do whatever we want with it.

Democracy? The Ouidah operate a 40-member Senate in Kumasi. Thirty members are directly appointed by Mr. Dagbo; the other ten are elected by free men and women.

Free speech? Did we even mention any restrictions on free speech? Akan, Fon, and white residents have as much freedom of speech as any other "democratic" nation.

Business done unethically? We've existed for nearly ten years and now you decide that our ethics are immoral?

If your country is truly abundant in gold, you could become our primary supplier of the material. We'll need about 20,000 kg of gold a month. Can you quote us a price on that?

20,000 kilograms of gold per month is approximately 240 million Euros or 286 million American dollars. You can cut these costs by selling to us military equipment or computer software.

We have about 200,000 exportable slaves at the time. As stated previously, they are well-fed, healthy, and well-built. Thirty test subjects will be shipped to Isidon -- a price of about 60,000 Africaine Francs (60,000 Euros).

Freedom? We have the freedom, the sovereign right, to export these slaves anywhere we want for whatever price we want to do as much work as we want.

Slaves do not suffer. They are fed, sheltered, and kept physically fit. Any attempts to intrude Ouidah waters will be met with fierce opposition including the sinking of ships by torpedoes. You have no right to tell us what is right or wrong. No, only we may decide that.

As a precaution, we have sent two carrier groups to the nearest international waters, one to West African States and the other to Isidon.

Is the personal freedom of a murderer, rapist, or thief worth more than thousands of brave men and women you are putting in danger by infringing a sovereign nation's waters? I fear your response. The UN has no power over our laws or way of life. That is the exact reason why we did not join the despiséd organization.

We will protect all vessels wishing to buy slaves from Isidon, all we request is the freedom to purchase 10,000 slaves to supplement our labor force in Yurka. We find your terms acceptable. Our mathematicians estimate that the amount of 84,562IF (imperial fiat) is roughly equivalent to 60,000 Euros. This amount has been sent via wire.

Three craft have been dispatched to escort the shipment from West Africa to Isidon. Two of these are Spartan class high-speed escort craft. Though lightly armed, they will be met en route by the supercarrier Leviathan, which has just been recalled from its diplomatic mission in West Quiq. It is our hope that this display of air power will deter most attempts to interrupt our transaction.

Be informed though, any unidentified flying objects over our waters or lands may be shot down. These are tense times and if your pilots do not identify themselves as Isidon pilots, we will assume that they are enemy fighters.

To prevent any counterfeit authorizations, we would like to issue several confirmation codes to the Isidon military. These codes would be handed out to the pilots and the pilots would confirm their status as Isidon pilots by repeating these codes. This is, of course, all for security.

Anyway, the deal shall be sealed once the Isidon convoy arrives.

Leviathan, the single largest aircraft created by the Isidon military. Hovering over the surface of the ocean, supported by a cunning network of gas bags and massive rotors, propelled by a dozen gigantic turbofan jets, the supercarrier was truly a sight to behold. Its hangars housed two wings of Javelin series jet gunships, three wings of Dragonfly gungyros, and four wings of small Wasp series interceptors. Its hull was dotted with dozens of gunports, equipped with everything from defensive machineguns, to heavy artillery cannon and rockets, fully capable of repelling attacks from air, or land.

The massive carrier was flanked by a pair of light escort ships, whose twin-rotor forms kept a moderate distance. Here and there, small autogyros flitted across the sky, keeping an eye open for possible hostile forces.

By keeping their flight path on an overland route for the early part of the journey, the Isidonian ships had managed to skirt most of the potential blockade in international waters. The Asians and Chimeans would have to do a lot of doubling back to even have a hope of intercepting.

One the bridge of the Leviathan, Captain Raul Vega let a smile cross his lips. He'd outfoxed the enemy, at least for now.

"Captain, sir," reported the ship's navigator. "Beginning approach to West Africa."

"Excellent." Vega activated the ship's intercom. "Radio room, contact Ouidah, and transmit the authorization codes. Hangar two, prepare the launch for departure."

***

"Ouidah, from Leviathan. Ouidah from Leviathan. We are about to cross over your border, and are preparing to launch a light transport jet to receive cargo. Stand by to receive authorization codes."

The radio man signaled to the head telegrapher, who began to tap out the complex string of numbers.

***

The Leviathan's secondary hangar opened, like the maw of some horrendous sky-beast. The whine of small fanjets was overwhelmed and drowned out by the all-consuming beating of the carrier's rotors, as the transport jet slipped away from its moorings, flying towards the Ouidah capital.

It does not matter that you are not a member of the United Nations; you may not believe in the international community, but rest assured that the international community believes in you.

Chimaea has lost the lives of brave soldiers defending the rights of those who have none; for their memory, we will not let this matter stand. Elements of the First Fleet have been dispatched in response to the growing threat against the Chimaea and Western Asia assets patrolling the area in question. We have also informed Baron allies of the situation and appropriate responses will be given.

We do not believe in soveriegnty without responsibility, power without rights. The moment people are being sold to others, your nations are in contravention of established human rights.

We wish our forces, and those of our allies, gods-speed and good luck.

Chimaean Carrier Group Greyhound, in international waters off West African States

The Command and Control vessel CSS Stalwart sailed low on the grey, leaden waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, the streamlined grey hull gently slicing through the endless vistage seemingly effortlessly. Around the comparitively small vessel towered the two carriers New Sydney and Hope. Around these behemoths were the smaller shapes of destroyers, cruisers, guided missile ships and other craft that gave a faster offensive and defensive capability to Greyhound.

And underneath the waves lurked the soundless, shark-like shapes of the submarines.

The activity on board the ships was deceptively calm, though with the chaotic calm of well-trained forces on high alert. Overhead, helicopters flew like flies around a carcass and higher up, fighter jets and unmanned aircraft flew protective circles around the carrier group. Guns were being loaded, artillery systems brought online, sensors tuned, sattelites located and radar brought through its capabilities. The Stalwart was like a hub in a storm of electronic information and organisation, analysing, reporting and interpreting. Minute course corrections and calculations were done constantly, the situation updated without pause, commanders informed and reports made. And constantly, backups were being done on all the other ships so that in the unlikely event of a successful attack on the Stalwart, the command and control function could seamlessly be forwarded to another ship.

Greyhound on operation was like a tiger, ready to spring at the slightest opportunity.

A pair of Western Asian expanded Naval Strike Team from the 4th Grand Fleet pass from the Western Mediterranean through the Straits of Gibraltar and begin to make their way south over the night, arriving in the region shortly after dawn less than a day after the Ouidah Corp's first offers were issued. They are followed by a pair of WA Gatekeeper Area Assault ULAs (airlifter forms) dispatched from bases on Malta, which arrive in the area shortly after the main fleet. Almost two dozen naval vessels are on scene already.

Another IDF Naval Corps group sets sail from its patrol near Sniper Country territory in Southern Africa, with an ETA of less than two days. The 5th Amphibious Assault Ready Group and parts of the 8th Grand Fleet are included in that expedition.

Another Message is sent to the WAS:
"Even financial freedoms come secondary to the rights of these slaves...who have been deprived of their sovereign rights by your profit seeking. Slaves, whether well provided for or ill maintained, are slaves and they cannot appreciate the freedoms that they deserve. Our forces will be ensuring the non-continuation of your slaver exploitation.

"We can assure you that the first torpedo your forces fire at any of our vessels will be the sign that the WAS will be punished for its oppressive practices."

An open message is issued to Yurka and Isidon Valley:

"This action comes in response to the enslavement that the Ouidah personnel have laid upon the innocent, the deservingly free that are in chains for their profit. We advise third parties and potential clients of these slaver practices to stand down and avoid the loss of life among their forces. This is not an attack on trade--we encourage the WAS to continue the export of gold, ivory, and other products freely as is their right...but no power has the right to enslave other human beings for profit.

"Armed vessels escourting slave transports will be seen as an offensive military presence and will be engaged unless they allow for the boarding and seizure of the slaver transports, to allow for the freeing of the slaves held by WAS. We do not view these slaves as property but rather as hostages and unlawful prisoners of the WAS or whatever state has claimed ownership of them. We will seek their release into safe hands so that their freedom may be ensured.

If any Western Asian assets should 'go missing' then parts of Resi Corp operations globally will also 'go missing' in a disproportionate manner. We are responding to economic issues other than the export of gold.

We advise you to discontinue trade with the Ouidah Corporation until assurances have been gained that they will cease the attempted exploitation and export of slaves...your pressure on them about this matter would be appreciated well.

For the safety of your shipments we would ask that you encourage the crews of such vessels to comply fully with Western Asian requests to inspect the cargo. If there are no slaves aboard ships destined to Resi Corp, in light of previous good relations between our nation and your businesses, then the gold will be allowed to pass. Ships that attempt to run the blockade, however, will be disabled and the cargo impounded until the conclusion of the situation. We would like to state, that nowhere in the Christian bible is slavery considered a sin, and to those trying to free the slaves, according to Western Africa State's the slaves were imprisoned for very specific reasons(IE: Murder, Rape, etc.).

We would also like to state that Iesus Christi's attempt to take a moral higher ground is hypocritical, and their stance that the bible says something which is does not, speaks more highly of your knowledge of your religion than anything else. Please address where exactly it says thus.

Fortunately, I have seem what I think an oppurtunity for a tyrannical government to take over, and we must stop this from occuring. Thus, we will send a large group of forces to Western Africa to make sure that no tyrannical regimes are able to take over, and to make sure that no hostile nations land in Ouidah lands.

Vega nodded slowly. "Radio room, relay following message. Escort craft Ilead and Oddyssey, proceed west to the coast, then south to oversea point Baker. Hold position and try to keep the seaborne heretics looking in the wrong direction. End message." After a moment's thought, he added, "Transmit request for backup from the second fleet. A few Behemoth air destroyers might help reinforce our bargaining position."

***
{20 minutes to Ouidah}

The transport jet lumbered through the African sky, westward to the Ouidah airstrip, and the precious human cargo that awaited it. In the hold, a team of Imperial Airborne troopers (the equivalent of other nations' Marines) waited, carbines at the ready, in case of any unforeseen difficulties.

***

Beneath the escort ships, the exotic African landscape gave way to the cold, dark ocean. The two vessels began their southward course correction, moving in on the blockade from the north. Radio messages had been received from the Isidonian capital, Candazia, that two air destroyers were en route, though it would be some time before they could arrive.

The crew of the vessels felt no fear. Most were hand picked from the Glorious Martyr brigade, and felt secure that their sacrifice would only bring further glory to the God Emperor.

A naval fleet leaves Yurka's borders, the imperial Yurkan military flags flying high, civilians gathered at the shores of all of Yurka's ports salluting the soldiers. The emperor's daughter was also boarding her personal craft, the largest combat submarine in the history of Yurka(Which is saying quite a bit). The naval fleet's components meet up just outside of Yurkan waters and beeline quietly towards Ouidah waters. They were not only there to assist Ouidah, but also to secretly purchase some slaves.

Combat Air Patrols consisting of F-14E SuperTomcats and EA-18 Growler EW aircraft are run constantly near the shores of the WAS, outside of WAS territorial waters.

The Gatekeepers arriving on scene are used to create a massive radar observation network over the skies of the WAS while slowly radar mapping the entire shoreline for possible ship-based strikes within the country.

IDF Intelligence Corps satellites high overhead remap the nation every 20 minutes, with any major movements of equipment being recorded and transmitted to the fleet vessels and aircraft in the region via satellite tightbeam signals. IDFIC vessels off of the coast monitor electronic traffic across the nation, homing in on the military signal frequencies of the possible enemies of Western Asia.

Early on the first morning of the blockade, a signal between Isidon Valley vessels records the Captain's orders to the Ilead and Oddyssey and the following request for aid from the IV government are intercepted by EA-18 Growlers on patrol and are stream-relayed to the SIGINT and ELINT facilities aboard the IDFIC's vessels over the fleet's secure Link 23 system.

By the time that normal CAPs are underway, over 1,100 strategic and tactical targets have been designated within the WAS and have been programmed into missiles aboard the Gatekeeper units and various naval fleet elements.

OOC: Yurka, F-15s in general, and F-15Es in specific, are completely unsuited for carrier-based operations, just FYI. I'll also assume that you have the ~60 superlarge transport ships for those troops and equipment included but not counted in the naval force deployed. You can be assured that this fleet is picked up the moment it heads out from port.

Just asking, where is Yurka located?
Yurka
17-04-2004, 02:22
OOC: Any idea on a good carrier-specific fighter? I don't usually mention transport ships, but ours are larger than average; picture an oil tanker completely filled with troops and powered by nuclear reactors and thats how we move troops around. So we use considerably less. A map of where the ships are coming from can be located here: Yurka (http://img6.photobucket.com/albums/v19/BrianJ/Yurka.bmp)

(The grey areas are Yurka's notoriously large cities(Smaller cities aren't shown), which are patrolled by notoriously "efficient" police leading to our crime rate of basically nil. Each Hex is just above 10 miles. The rest of the country isn't as colonised as that section and that is where the naval ships are comming from) The Militaristic Empire of Yurka isn't expecting any attacks by going there, and won't let anyone prevent them access to the shores of Ouidah.

(Nili is essentially a space nation, but we really need fertile, strong humans for our biological engineering))

Zack sat back in his chair and looked at the vid monitor of the Sol system, spying a group of humans selling eachother for trade. The species wasn't an ideal race for the experiments he was doing, but as far as price was concerned it was relatively cheap. He walked over to the terminal and reached for it's wire, turning around as he stuck it to the base of his skull and sent an encrypted message via thoughtlink.

------Encrypted------

Ouidah, the Autocratic Triumvirate of Nili requests 400 human specimens of the strongest kind, all fertile, half of which must be male and the other half female. The empire thanks you in advance and will pay you in full. Just put them all in a secluded location and we will retrive them via space shuttle.

{ooc: The FA-18, and the Harrier strike jet, are both common sights on American carriers, Yurka.}

"Getting pretty crowded up here, Leviathan." Radio crews abord the two Isidonian escort vessels remained in contact with the primary ship. Gyrocraft and light fighters had been deployed from the ships' hangars, holding in a defensive pattern around the gyroships.

"Spotters report at least three seabased targets in MRAM range, stand by for co-ordinates.." The radio operator began reading off West Asian ship locations from a bundle of papers, drawn up by the spotter teams and navigator.

Within the Leviathan's gunnery control room, maps were laid out, engineers with slide-rule, compass, and protractor in hand swarming around the large central table, preparing the firing solutions for the vessels formidable complement of Z25 Medium Range Artillery Missiles.

{ooc note: Z25s are middle-to-big "antiship" missiles. Though a more accurate real-world analog would be 1940s Germany's V2.}

***

Meanwhile, air destroyers Phoenix and Emperor's Hand had departed Isidonian airspace, heading to meet the West Asian fleet at Africa. Phoenix was a typical four-rotor craft, carrying two wings of Hornet jetfighters, and one of Javelin gunjets. The Emperor's Hand however, was something special. Its hangar had been retrofitted to carry not aircraft, but a single weapon: A new, experimental, "mobile" Tesla Cannon, adapted from the Holy Nation's formidable, land-based defense grid.

***

Vega breathed a sigh of relief, upon hearing news that the transport jet had touched down securely.

Still, he regarded the radio set with trepedation. He had ordered the portable set to be brought to the bridge, and patched into the ship's long range transmitter..There may, he thought, still be a way to settle this peacefully.

The radio room began transmitting a simple, unencoded message.

"West Asian fleet, from Leviathan. West Asian fleet, from Leviathan. Please respond."

The Commonwealth greatly encourages democracy, free speech and human rights to prevail in the lands controlled by the Ouidah Corporation. Business done unethically is not worth the effort.

There was a murmur of confusion as the orders were given, though the Leviathan's crew obeyed. Soon, the bridge had been cleared, save for the captain and his radio set.

"This is Raul Vega, captain of the Isidonian flagship Leviathan. I request to speak with the officer in command of your battle group."

This had better work, thought Vega, looking out over the African vista through the ship's large, glass viewing port.

Meanwhile, just off the African coast, Phoenix had arrived and deployed patrol craft. The heavier Emperor's Hand, burdoned by its Tesla Cannon, could be seen hovering several leagues distant.

Aboard the Hand, final preparations had been made to deploy the experimental weapon; the powerful lift engines were connected to generators, and capaciters were slowly being charged..

Chimaean Carrier Group Greyhound, in international waters off West African States

Rear Admiral Alistair Kennedy tapped his fingers rhythmically on the arm rests of the chair bolted to the steel floor of the Bridge of the Stalwart, studying the reports that flashed across his screen. Around him, technicians and aides scurries to and fro, sometimes giving verbal reports to each other and the officers on the Bridge.

He noted the Western Asia forces closing on the Yurka battlegroup and the Isidon escorts, and ordered a course taking Grehound between the Battlegroup and the African mainland, taking care not to actually cross the territorial waters of the Western African States.

He ordered the communications section of the Bridge to open up a public channel to the Yurka battlegroup and sat back, continuing to drum his fingers on the armrest.

Iesus Christi's passion against slavery is commendable, but that nation must realise that wading in blood is not the most expediant method of dealing with slavers. To fight monsters we must take care lest we become monsters.

-------------------

It matters not what the slaves have done to become slaves. Slavery is cruel and unusual punishment in any case; neither do we necessarily believe that, even if these slaves are criminals, future slaves would be too.

At this time, Chimaea has no intention of invading the Western African States. Our purpose is to monitor and halt any possible trade in slaves, via a quarantine of the waters and airspace surrounding the Western African States.

-------------------

First Fleet, approaching international waters off West African States

The First Fleet on operations was a sight to strike terror into the hearts of anyone who saw it. It was the oldest and biggest of the three Fleets in the Chimaean Navy, which started off as a token gesture to mainly support the actions of the Chimaean Army. Under the Styles Administration, the Navy had expanded to almost ten times what it was before, with cutting-edge technology designed by the Chimaea-Clock Hill-Snuffopolis alliance. If a single Carrier was a floating city, then the First Fleet was a floating continent, composed of defensive and offensive Carrier Groups. The cost alone of maintaining and operating this veritable barrage of hardware was in the hundreds of billions of Sils per annum, more in an active operation.

In the private Admiral's quarters of one of the Carriers, Admiral Isobel Wilder sat down and eyed the dark-suited man opposite her suspiciously. He was a little too presentable; the eye tended to just wash over him and away. His face was young but the Admiral suspected that he was far older than he looked. His black hair was swept back from his forehead and his eyes were masked by sunglasses.

"You're not really a diplomatic attache, are you, Mister Walton?" she asked bluntly.

There was a hint of a smile on his lips as he shrugged. "No I'm not. I work for the Chimaean government in an... unofficial capacity."

Realisation dawned. "Why would CAF send an... send you with the Fleet?"

Walton regarded her for a moment, then cocked his head slightly. "You may as well know this now, Admiral. It is strictly confidential and will never leave our heads."

Will, she noted. Not can.

"There are no written records of my presense here, nor is there any orders or otherwise on hard copy. It is my duty... our duty first and foremost to ensure that the interests of Chimaea is looked after. Like you, I am here to fascilitate this."

The Admiral frowned. "What do you intend to do?"

"If certain conditions are met, Admiral, I will ensure that, one way or the other, Agaja Dagbo is taken care of to Chimaea's satisfaction."

Far away, the radio relay system conveys these words to the commander of the operations, Rear Admiral Keday.

After a few moments, Keday opens the band again "If you wish to save the lives of those thousand men then abandon your attempts to enslave these men, whose only crime has been their poverty and their only cause for imprisonment was the greed of the Ouidah Corporation.

"If you wish to avoid conflict then I suggest that you say so now and disengage your weapons systems rather than powering them up...yes, we can pick up the tremendous electromagnetic field emissions of your ships which is exactly why a barrage of hypersonic missiles will be destroying that craft as well as yours inside of ten seconds if you don't order it to stand down."
19-04-2004, 00:50
"Emperor's Hand holding at 194.4 miles from target, Captain. Capacitors ready, discharge in 12."

The radio man's voice crackled over the Leviathan's intercom, audible over the relayed words from Admiral Keday.

Vega punched on the intra-ship com system. "Order them to adjust heading by 87 degrees westward."

"But captain sir, that will--"

"Do it."

"Yes sir."

Outside, in the darkening sky, Vega saw a shaft of brilliant light, the discharge of the Hand's Tesla Cannon, striking empty water several miles from the Asian fleet, sending up billowing clouds of steam from the ocean's surface. The captain re-opened the radio channel.

"Sorry if that startled you, Admiral Keday. The capacitors must be discharged, you see, or the electrical buildup could set off a gasbag. It's not very pretty, when one of those goes up.

"You must understand, Admiral, that this mission is the will of the God Emperor. I cannot simply turn back; if I did, I and my officers would be tried for heresy, likely executed besides. Despite what you may think of us, these are good men, and deserve better than that. I would like to offer an alternative, if you'll listen.

"With this in mind, Admiral, I appeal to you to meet with myself, and my second, Paladin Lieutenant Marcus Blake, at a location of your choosing, to settle this confrontation between us. Blake is an honorable man, and shall not interfere, that I promise.

South Atlantic Ocean

The orange-rose sunrise illuminated the grey-white (http://www.shipcamouflage.com/images/USN_camouflage_title.jpg) Syskeyian fleet as it made its way throught the blueish grey sea.

The fleet was comprised of a variety of vessels, all sailing in textbook formation. Carriers, battleships, crusiers and other vessels cut through the water while planes and helicopters circled overhead

This was not the first time that Syskeyian forces had helped blockade the forces of slavery. Long ago, when Amerigo offered to sell slaves under a pretense of hypocrisy, Syskeyian stepped in and blockaded the country. The rest, as they say, was history.

And history was with the Syskeyians that day, for the ships that had blockaded Amerigo in those bygone days were in the task force now.

One of those ships, the Syskeyian flagship RSS Holy Trinity, commanded the fleet. Aboard this Nimitz-class carrier, Rear Admiral Joseph Chuynak send messages to the WA and Chimaean fleets, informing them that the Republic intended to join their side. To the Chimaean message he added the following note:

[code:1:31194a28c4]We're back.[/code:1:31194a28c4]

1 Supply-class replenishment ship

Also, each carrier carries 1 Carrier Air Wing, which consists of the following:

1 F-14 Tomcat squadron
1 A-10N "Sea Hog" squadron
1 S-3B Viking squadron
1 EA-18G "Growler" squadron

Sir Julian Cadmus Myterlowe swore to himself as the train hit yet another bump on the poorly-laid tracks. His fedora - which was a good size larger than his head - fell down over his face. He fussily rearranged it, hopefully without letting anyone notice.

The entire incident made Myterlowe think of something rather important - how rude was it to wear his hat on a train? He knew that inside, especially in a lady's presence, was strictly forbidden, but did a train count as 'inside'? He glanced, as inconspicuously as possible, around the car; no one else seemed to have a hat on. He started to reach up to remove his as well when an old man across the aisle glanced over at him. Myterlowe froze, his hand halfway to his head, and smiled. The old man snorted and returned to reading his paper; Myterlowe replaced his hand on the rest and sighed softly.

Out the window, Nigeria rolled by slowly. Myterlowe had been on train, river boat, or rickety aero-flyer for what seemed an eternity and a half. His job for the past few months had been as His Iansislean Majesty's trade consul in the Walmingtonish Cape Colonies; as such, he was considered the most knowledgeable man in the foreign service where Africa was concerned.

That was really something of a shame, since Myterlowe hardly knew anything about the Dark Continent. He sighed again, much louder this time. The old man looked over again, and Myterlowe blushed. "Sorry..." he muttered. The old man humph-ed and went back to his newspaper again.

Lord Inswick, Iansisle's Foreign Affairs Minister, assured him that contact had been made with the new West African States government and they had been told to expect his coming preliminary diplomatic mission in Kumasi, but somehow he was less than secure in that fact. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had been known to be slightly less than efficient - some might say absolutely incompetent - and it was really a coin flip if the administrators in Kumasi would actually know he was coming.

On top of those troubles was the excessive vagueness in the contradictory orders Lord Inswick had sent from Ianapalis. Myterlowe was "to make contact with the Ouidah leadership," "convince them of His Majesty's good will," "inquire as to the possibility of ending the sale of human beings," and "remind them that the Royal Iansislean Navy considers the international slave trade upon the high seas to be piracy" while keeping in mind "our long-standing commitment to non-interference in a sovereign country's domestic affairs."

The old train shook with another large jolt, sending Myterlowe's hat into his hands. Another hour or two until they hit the border. Hopefully, Inswick had managed to arrange more comfortable transportation into the West African States.

((ooc: I leave poor Sir Julian's future travel plans in your hands, WAS. Oh, and a quick note about geographical locations. I imagine that no one else here has the 'Walmingtonian Cape Colonies" or such places on their maps, and I understand that completely. It's just another multi-verse thingie. People talking to my characters can chalk it up to insanity or something ;)))

Mr. Dagbo,

It is indeed our definition of cruel and unusual punishment to which I referred. Since it is our servicemen and women out there, risking their lives to put the outdated and degrading practice of slavery to an end, I see no reason to adopt any other definition.

Murder and rape are scourges of society and naturally I am always supporting ways of making these crimes a thing of the past. If you wish, Chimaea can send justice experts and social advisers to help deal with the Western African States' crime problem; as you may note, Chimaea is relatively free of any major crime.

We will not, however, support a practice that is akin to the British convict history in Australia. It does not belong in in modern times.

Chimaean Carrier Group Greyhound, in international waters off West African States

"This is Chimaean Navy Group Greyhound to Yurka naval forces, the territory you are entering has been deemed under quarantine. Do not come any further, advice you to change course immediately."

Brigadier Kennedy listened with half an year to the communications section, broadcasting the message over the open channel. The other forces in the vicinity were sure to hear any exchange between Greyhound and the Yurka battlegroup.

The message icon from the communications section flashed on his screen and he opened it and read the coded message from the Syskeyians, and couldn't help grinning at the last part. He acknowledged the message and ordered the Carrier Group to coordinate with the Syskeyian forces, leaving the formal greetings to the now-nearby First Fleet.

First Fleet, approaching international waters off West African States

[code:1:ac240d53c6]TO: Rear Admiral Joseph Chuynak
FROM: Admiral Isobel Wilder

The Chimaean Navy welcome the arrival and participation in this blockade of our historic allies in Syskeyia. Once more our Navies are pitted against the horrific blight of slavery.

We will send you sitreps attached to this message. I have instructed Chimaean forces to coordinate and liase with the Syskeyian Taskforce.

Warmest regards,
Admiral Isobel Wilder,
C.O. First Fleet, Chimaean Navy

P.S. Let's kick some righteous buttock.[/code:1:ac240d53c6]

Admiral Wilder looked over the message, and authorised it to be sent to the Syskeyian Taskforce. She checked the ETA of the Fleet in the proximity of WAS and Greyhound: 25 minutes and lessening.

She nodded to herself in satisfaction, and walked out of the Bridge onto the viewing platform. Acknowledging the salutations of fellow officers, she looked out at the armada of ships in the First Fleet and felt the familiar thrill of excitement and nervousness, knowing she commanded the thousands of lives and the machinery at sea that day. At her disposal was the enormous destructive power of Chimaea's greatest and oldest fleet.

Wilder watched as another two CS-42s took off from the deck of the Carrier, heading towards the possible flashpoint. She wasn't very religious but as the planes blasted into the sky, she remembered Oppenheimer's quoting of the Bhagavad Gita: "I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds".

"Mr. Dagbo," said Ode Maga, personal assistant to the Asantehene, intelligence reports the arrival of a foreign diplomat via the Nigeria-Kumasi railroad.

"Where did they come from?"

"The Cape colonies down south."

"What is his nation of origin?"

"Well, he's told authorities that he is from Iansisle -- Sir Julius Cadmus Myterlowe. And that he wishes to meet with us today, as planned."

"Why wasn't I informed of this meeting?"

"You weren't, Mr. Dagbo. We were never contacted of Ouidah-Iansisle meeting."

"Hmm... send the Kumasi Guard to seize this man and bring him to me. Do it peacefully and be sure not to cause any civil disturbance."

"Fine."

Sixty Kumasi Guards stationed on the outskirts of the city were contacted and sent to capture Sir Julius. The Guards were lightly armed, with only pistols and nightsticks. Their orders were not to hurt Julius, but to bring him to Dagbo's Kumasi residence.

And off they went.

This isn't going so well, thought Sir Julian as another of his not-so-discreet inquiries met with blank stares and apprehensive behavior. His poorly-tailored suit was soaked through with sweat, and he fanned himself with his hat as he wandered the outskirts of Kumasi. Fortunately for Myterlowe, his duty to the King had acclimated him somewhat to hot weather: he'd been stationed not only on the Cape, but also in the sticky island jungles of Calarcan Gallanesia and the tropics of the Company's land in Gallaga. The sweat would still come, but he didn't pay it nearly as much mind as he once did.

He turned a corner, and nearly ran smack into a group of what looked like police. "Pardon me," he said in English (he didn't even pretend he knew what the local language was, much less how to speak it), replacing his hat on his head so as to use it to tip at the nearest guard. "My name is Sir Julian Myterlowe, a representative of His Iansislean Majesty High King James III, may he live forever. His Lordship the Earl of Inswick sent me to this fine city in order to make contact with the local government.

"I...I have had some trouble contacting the local authorities...and I wonder if you fine gents might be able to, ah, direct me..?" Myterlowe's voice trailed off towards the end of his little often repeated speech as he noticed more policemen coming from behind him and the nearby alley-ways.

"Good day, Admiral." Vega killed the radio link, resuming his chair. The bridge began to repopulate, crewmen returning to their duty stations. Things were not going well. Out at sea, hundreds of what could only be madmen were preparing to start a war over the rights of citizens not of their own nation. On the ground below, negotiations between the Ouidah and the Ianislean were delaying the loading of the jet-transport's human cargo. The safest resolution availiable to Vega, had been shot down by his opponent. Even still, Vega had a feeling things could get even worse.

Yeoman Kristover, the captain's aid, approached with Vega's customery evening brandy, though the older man waved it off. "I need to think."

***

Aboard the Emperor's Hand, Paladin-Martyrs had dutifully relayed Vega's sudden orders for course correction, and the subsequent misfire of the Tesla Cannon, back to fleet headquarters in Candazia.

Minister of War Richter called the fleet admirals to conference, and prepared to take action. By moonrise, a transmission was broadcast from the Isidonian capital, reaching the Isidonian battle group in Africa, as well as anyone who may happen to be listening in.

"We are greatly disturbed by the actions of Captain Raul Vega, who once claimed to act on behalf of the Most Holy, God Emperor of Isidon. Captain Vega's recent attempts at communication with an enemy fleet, and orders issued as a result of those communications, have caused us to call his loyalty and fidelity to the God Emperor and His Holy Will into question.

"As of this moment, Captain Vega is relieved of his command. Control of the Leviathan and her battle group is turned over to Paladin Lieutenant Marcus Blake. Given Blake's service record in the Heretic Uprising, and his unquestioned devotion to the God Emperor, we believe he is best suited to commanding the battle group until its return to Isidon, where a new captain shall be appointed, and Vega's potential heresy shall be addressed more fully. Until then, Vega is to be confined to Leviathan's brig until completion of this mission."

***

On the bridge of the Leviathan, Blake's voice crackled over the intercom, sounding hesitant, almost sad.

"Captain, sir, I..I'm sorry."

"Just do what you need to, Blake. Get us home," replied Vega.

Kristover stared at the captain for a moment, stammering. "Captain sir, you..we can't just let them.."

"Stow it, Yeoman," came the reply. "We can't fight the will of the Council. It'd be suicide."

The heavy door to the bridge swung open, revealing the form of Lt. Blake. He was a young man, just past his mid twenties, with dark hair and strong, European features. He wore the crimson uniform of the Paladins, trimmed with threat-of-gold, and bearing a small, golden chevron on either side of its high collar. His pistol was holstered at his right hip, sabre at his left, though his demeanor was far from hostile, and much more apologetic.

He was followed by four Paladins, in tailor fitted crimson jumpsuits, covered with guilded, metal body armor over chest, shoulders, forearms, knees, and shins; absent where the red-plumed helmets, deemed too cumbersome for indoor use. Each man was equipped with a .30 repeating carbine, held ready.

"Captain," began Blake, stepping forward. "If you will please accompany me."

"No!" Yeoman Kristover threw himself between the Captain and the Paladin. "No, you can't do this. He'll be executed! I won't let you!" The yeoman moved to draw his sidearm..

The sharp report of gunfire echoed through the cavernous bridge.

***

Almost an hour had passed since Leviathan had received its transmission from Isidon. An hour of frenzied chatter among the Isidonian battle group, but no communication to stations outside the intership network. Until now.

"This is Paladin Lieutenant Blake. As I'm certain you are aware, command of the Leviathan and her battle group has been handed over to me. In spite of recent events, rest assured that your ships are still within range of our missiles, as well as Ilead and Oddyssey's twelve inchers. Any attempt to harm the transport jet or its cargo, will meet swift, and brutal response, in the form of a full barrage. This is not a threat; I, like Vega, do not wish to start a war. However, I will not compromise the Emperor's interests."

***

It was rare for a vessel's commander to actually set foot inside the radio room; as such, these particular parts of the ship were not always up to the pristine standards of the Isidonian Air Corps. So it was that Marcus Blake found himself picking a careful path among empty, disposable cups, wrappers, and crumpled printouts, to reach the chief operator.

"Chief, raise a secure line to the Ouidah, immediately."

The small navy closes in on the shores just a little, trying to see how determined to start a war Western Asia really was. The huge ship below the surface opened it's collection of missile pods lining the surface and the torpedo ports along the sides and bottom, all of which were fully loaded and ready to fire as the huge behemoth partially surfaced to allow it's missiles to actually fire. As it did so the the entire Yurka fleet bobbed from the waves it created. The empire's blessing was not "just" a figure head, and if it needed to dispute this fact it would.

Encrypted to Ouidah

To our allies in Ouidah,

Stay strong! In our nation such criminals would get anything from a life of forced labor to an execution! Your mercy is indeed righteous and a beacon of hope in this dark world where sovereignity loses all meaning. I can hope that our stand against the oppressors, win or lose, shows the world that there are still nations ready to fight for sovereignity. Please dress all of the slaves in military uniforms to make it easier for us to smuggle them away.

"Haha," laughed Sir Julian nervously. "Of course you can! Never meant to imply you couldn't...I mean, uh, that's splendid! Please, lead on!" He laughed again, but it was no more natural this time.

As they traveled the streets of Kumasi, Sir Julian adjusted the light duffel he was carrying over his shoulder - rule one of diplomatic travel: pack light - and tried to remember the literature he'd read on dealing with natives. The foreign service academy seemed so far in his past now, he could hardly think of a single thing.

He then tried to think of the natives he'd interacted with on the Cape, in Gallaga, or Gallanesia. The memory seemed awfully far away now, especially considering it'd hardly been a week since he'd left the Cape, and those that were fresh didn't apply to this situation.

Which brings up an interesting point, he mused to himself, Once we arrive, what title does an 'Asantehene' bear? Your Majesty? Your Excellency? Your Grace? Your Highness?. Sir Julian was a baronet, the third in the Myterlowe of Bridetton line, and a lifetime within the rigid Iansislean aristocracy had taught him the imperativeness of addressing others correctly, especially when on a diplomatic mission. But while his teachings had included everything from Maharajas to Kings, Presidents, Prime Ministers, Dukes, Princes, Chancellors, and Czars, he couldn't think of a single instance with an Asantehene.

((You know, it's really too bad the only diplomat involved in this mess is incompetent. ;)))

A message is sent in response:
If your royalty are aboard a ship for diplomatic purposes then it shouldn't be a warship. You have six minutes to turn back now before your vessels will be engaged.

However many allies Yurka may rally, we can assure you that we will yield an equal or greater number of immensely more powerful nations in support of our nation. I don't believe that you need to be informed of the fact that Western Asia alone is probably as large as most of your allies combined...and our military power matches that reality.

Aboard the Nirit-class vessels, the weapons officers hold their attack for the signal from their commanders as the missile boats move ever closer to their target...the two dozen powerful missiles sit restrained only to the activation of the digital control systems.

Within the fast-approaching jets, the Weapons Officers continue to monitor their targets and the payload. As the massive submarine appears on the data relay from the Gatekeepers the officers retarget on that vessel.

In response to Western Asia's reply:

These ships are only to protect ourselves in case war should come in Ouidah. Alia Yurka is the emperor's only daughter and is next in line for the throne in case her elder brother is not found. The rest of our royalty was wiped out in a nuclear war awhile ago where our allies decided that they weren't willing to protect us. Thanks to that attitute over one million people were killed, including every slave that they were trying to liberate, even though most of them had freedom in another few years.(Yurka's slaves were more like indentured laborers) An entire generation of innocent people were wiped out, we will not allow anything such as that to ever happen again.

The empire's blessing is our form of sincerity and our ability to show off our power. Your mocking regard to our allies is very unflattering because of your lack of knowledge. More than one of our allies is over the one billion mark. We are also a member of many "memberships" which will defend us to the last. Can you honestly justify the death of so many innocent civilians for a few prisoners forced to work off their debt to society?

The submarine halted, awaiting Western Asia's response.

OOC: The huge submarine is a huge submersible, mobile fortress powered by a few nuclear reactors on most of the sides. It dwarfs the destroyer and two carriers combined. Its only used to wipe out surface foes or transport royalty.

Upon hearing the words, the leader of Arusia inc. informs the government of his purchase, which is quickly ok'ed. 6 large ships in earth's atmosphere eventually receive their mission and launch a group of 10 armed transport vessels towards Ouidah.

Upon reaching Ouidah aerospace the lead ship's pilot turns on the radio and says the confirmation code, "Ok! Now we need to get them in as quickly as possible!" The ships decelerated as they quickly approached the surface of the port, hovering in place for a minute before landing. The leader walked outside into the sunlight, accompanied by roughly 60 soldiers from each of the shuttles, "We shall wire the money once the specimens are aboard the ships.

To all nations involved,

Mr. Dagbo, perhaps then it is necessary to bring a rennaissance of morals and ethics to the West African States? Chimaean efforts of bringing a new socialised justice system in Colombia, for example, have been largely effective. It will not change overnight, but perhaps the next generation will not have to resort to such extreme measures. It is a fact that is proven again and again that deterrance does not work; social factors must be addressed for crime to lessen.

We are delighted by your offer to negotiate; however our forces will remain in international waters outside of the West African States territory, maintaining the blockade. All ships not connected to the slave trade will be allowed to pass through upon inspection. However, Chimaea is prepared to assure that, should talks go ahead, no Chimaean ship will cross the territorial line into West African States' waters. We are prepared to ask the other forces present to do likewise.

RE: The international community and the UN

The part to emphasise, and we apologise if this has not been made clear, is not the UN (a body with which Chimaea holds certain reservations) but the international community. In today's world of global communications, international bodies and world-wide media coverage, it is no longer practical to claim soveriegnty (on either side) while people are being killed or rights trampled upon. Chimaea believes that soveriegnty stretches only so far; it is not a free ticket to tyranny and oppression. We do not question the right of any nation and any armed forces to fight an intervention, of course. We are more than prepared to fight back, is all.

Chimaea does not act under the jurisdiction of the UN, as per domestic legislation passed after the Ienotheisan Crisis. However, being an active UN member, Chimaea will always act to defend UN resolutions... resolutions which have global resonance and global consequences. This does not mean that Chimaean forces, in 99% of instances, will serve under a UN banner according to UN jurisdiction.

Therefore, Chimaea will never consider being a part of the UN an issue when it comes to intervention. Whether the UN is behind us or not, we will do what it takes to ensure that human rights is upheld.

Lastly: Chimaea considers human rights and the well-being of sentient beings more important than any illusionary rule such as soveriegnty. We believe it is a basic instinct to help when help is needed.

Lastly: Chimaea considers human rights and the well-being of sentient beings more important than any illusionary rule such as soveriegnty. We believe it is a basic instinct to help when help is needed.

Our recent experience with the "international community" and "the UN" has been less than favorable. We see them as meddlers. You merely rationalize your right to intervene in affairs according to some vain belief that you think is "right". As well, offer proof that said slaves asked for help from the outside. For all you know, they may have wanted to be slaves.

IC: Your allies have already failed you once, be mindful of that. It might also be said that deploying your sole surviving heir to the throne is a bad decision and a risky gambit for your kingdom, but you monarchists can do as you wish and it is none of our concern. One would think, however, that your people would learn to not promote slavery considering the results of your last defense of those practices. You have three minutes...you would be wise make sure the rest of your vessels halt as well.

OOC: So it's a nice big, slow, and vulnerable target...okay.

Sys,
Probably not...if you're plugged into our TacNet then you probably have an idea that our ships have been sent to intercept and a transcript of the record. You might be getting some Radar and satellite images soon, but it seems unlikely as most of the data is being fast streamed to the forces preparing for any assault rather than being generally distributed at this time. You'll probably know inside of 15 minutes, however, and you definitely have the approximate coordinates of the Yurka and satellite imagery if your ships have broad bandwith and integrated information transmission/reception capabilities (ie, WA ships are designed so that they can be run from almost any area with the right authorization codes, this means that intelligence information can be displayed on any general access panel...on the bridge and in the commander(s)'s suites this means large (quarter to half wall-sized) screens for detailed information display).

The Rear Admiral responds:

"It is a shame that your society doesn't reward the reasonable and practical among you. I am surprised to hear that you have cannons with such range, but I can assure you that the moment we decide to intervene, that is, the moment that you attempt to remove slaves from the WAS, your ships will be destroyed."

Do not worry, friend, we know what we are doing. Once the foreign diplomats make their arrival in Kumasi, the slaves will be sent.

~Lady Bryce
Governor of Chimaea

Lady Bryce, it is not your decision whether or not the West African States are ready for this "radical" change that you offer. Our ancestors lived for nearly 200 years using harsher slave tactics, and they flourished into rich nations. We ARE NOT A WESTERN CULTURE. Understand this.

However, we are pleased to hear that you will also be willing to negotiate. Once your allies withdraw from our waters, negotiations may begin. Non-military jets will be allowed to land at Kumasi Airport. No diplomats may come by boat. All aircraft will be monitored and Ouidah fighters will be patrolling the skies should you attempt to attack any of our assets from the sky.

IC: To: Western Asia
Western Asia, maybe honor is a foreign idea to your people, but we show our loyalty by sending important people to locations around the world whenever trouble looms overhead. You have no reason to attack us other than to starve Ouidah's civilians. I can tell you this much, the first persons to be affected will be the slaves you are trying to free. Can you honestly say that them starving to death will do anything? We are not moving. If you can afford a war with Yurka, be warned that you attacked first and we will sacrifice anything to defeat your tyranny!

PS: If you'd like you can come aboard and check our navy, we need to help an ally in need. You can check our ships for slaves once we're there if you wish, but our loyalty to an ally in need is far more important than a member of our royalty. Would you be willing to leave an ally in such a posisition and not help them? If you have any honor whatsoever then you would understand our posisition.

Important Notice

We regret to inform you that your meeting with Asantehene has been delayed until tomorrow. Mr. Dagbo will be holding a dinner party tonight and will be unable to conduct diplomatic arrangements.

The Ouidah government will pay for a two-night stay at the Kumasi City Hotel -- the finest in all of Ghana. Enjoy your stay, room service for you will be free.

The note was handed to Sir Julius from a messenger; he quickly departed to continue on further errands.

Agaja Dagbo's Residence -- Kumasi, Ghana 11:00 PM

"I'm leaving, Mr. Dagbo. A big day ahead of us tomorrow," said Hugh Stein.

"You sure you don't want to stay for the dinner party?" replied Dagbo.

"I'm completely sure, Mr. Dagbo. Maybe another day."

"Alright, see you tomorrow, bright and early -- 5:00 AM."

"As always," said Stein as he exited Dagbo's office carrying his jacket over his shoulder.

---

Hugh Stein's Residence -- Kumasi, Ghana 11:30 PM

Ring! Ring!

The telephone rang twice. Stein's secretary answered it.

"Who's there?" she asked.

"Ode," replied the caller.

"Ode who?"

"Maga. Let me talk to Mr. Stein now."

"Mr. Stein is sleeping... may I take a message?"

"No. Wake him."

"I'm sorry, Mr. Maga..."

"THIS IS ASANTEHENE DAGBO'S PERSONAL ASSISTANT LET ME TALK TO MR. STEIN NOW," he interrupted.

"I'm sure you are. Bye..."

"You f---ing bitch. Let me talk to Mr. Stein right now or I'll kill you!" he said indignantly.

"I'm going to have to ask you to refrain from calling us ever again 'Ode Maga.' I'm sure there's a mental institution somewhere in Kumasi willing to nourish your outlandish little fantasies."

A red dot flashed on her dress. It moved upward until it was centered on her forehead.

"Believe me now?" Maga said.

She was hyperventilating now. She stuttered, "Get.. get... get Mr. Stein NOW!" she hollered.

"He's sleeping, honey," said one of Stein's servants.

"I'm serious, get him now. This is important."

The servant sighed. "Fine," she said as she walked down the corridor.

She entered Hugh Stein's bedroom. Stein was sleeping and snoring mildly. She nudged him. He grunted.

"Mr. Stein! Mr. Stein."

"What is it?" he said sluggishly.

"A phone call."

He sprung from his bed. The servant handed Stein his slippers and handed his phone to him.

"Yes?" he said.

"Mr. Stein. It's me. Ode. Maga."

"Good, good. Are you there?"

"Yes, I'm outside of his residence right now," replied Ode. "Are you sure this will work?" he added.

"Trust me," said Stein. "The money from Amadi's bank accounts have been transferred to secret Swiss bank accounts registered under your name. Your identity. Amadi is the heir to the throne as well as an unbelievable amount of wealth. He has the motive and opportunity, He'll be staying a bit after dinner when everyone else has left to discuss the upcoming Iansislean-Ouidah diplomatic talks. Amadi has always been a strong supporter of the slave trade and has been known to take several kickbacks and bribes from slave owners."

"Like you?" Maga said sarcastically.

"Shut up. Dagbo is planning on cutting off the slave trade. I can't afford that. I've made certain deals with prominent slave owners and gold miners," Stein answered firmly.

Ode sighed. "And you assure me that you'll pardon me for the assasination?"

"Privately. Secretly. Only you and I will know. Then Kumasi Guards will escort you from the prison. After that, you can take a train to Nigeria under a new identity which will be provided for you."

"What about my old life? Won't they realize that I've left?"

"There'll be an explosion in your cell."

"Beautiful."

"Yep, just like the Kennedy assasination. Oswald kills Kennedy, Ruby kills Oswald 'out of sympathy for Jackie.' We'll use that tactic to cover up your escape. Of course, our man is a suicide bomber. A real nut."

"Aight. Well, the party will be beginning soon. I must assist Mr. Dagbo until the time comes. I am, still, his personal assistant until 12:45," chuckled Maga.

"Don't forget to plant Amadi's pistol in the glove compartment of his car."

"No problem."

"Wear gloves. We don't want any DNA evidence to reveal that it was you."

"Done."

"Don't fuck up."

"Don't worry, Mr. Stein, I won't."

Agaja Dagbo's Residence -- 12:43 AM

"I'll be there in five minutes, Agaja," said Amadi Dagbo, Agaja's first cousin and heir to the throne of the West African States.

Agaja Dagbo was in his dressing room, putting on a new velvet tie. Suddenly, there were two knocks.

"Who's there?" asked Dagbo.

"It's me, Mr. Dagbo," Ode answered.

He checked his watch. It was 12:45.

"Ode?" said Dagbo trying to recognize the muffled voice. "Is that you? Come in."

The door swung wide open and a man dressed in dark black wearing a black robber's mask (complete with two eyeholes and a mouth hole). He was pointing a pistol fastened with a silencer at Dagbo, who happened to be sitting on his bed. Ode fired two shots into Dagbo's head. Blood splattered everywhere, Dagbo gave out a gasp! and Maga turned and slinked away from the crime scene. He pulled his robber's mask off, concealed the pistol, and hustled down the stairs.

"Okay, Agaja, I'm ready. Let's get down to business," said Amadi.

There was complete silence. Amadi was puzzled. He licked his bottom lip and sniffled.

"Agaja? I'm ready," he said louder. "For Christ's sake, man, I'm ready let's do this."

Amadi was perturbed a bit and walked down the hallway and turned into his cousin's room only to find a horrific sight.

"OH MY GOD!" he shouted at the top of his lungs. "MEDIC!!"

Remaining servants and Dagbo's own wife rushed to the scene, curious to see what had happened (worried too by the tone of Amadi's voice).

Urbi, Agaja's wife of nine years, fainted at the sight of her dead husband, only to be caught by Amadi who was just as shocked.

Blood was splattered all over the walls. Brains oozed from his forehead. He was slouched back, his head and neck leaning on the wall, the rest of his body laying flat on his bed. His feet were hanging from the side of the bed serenely. His eyes were rolled back and his arms were spread out to each side. He mouth was slightly opened and saliva dripped from his lips.

Agaja Dagbo had been assasinated.

A port side 6”/50 Mk. V secondary gun mounted on His Iansislean Majesty’s Battleship Titan in a twin turret leveled itself and barked loudly. One hundred pounds of shell, hurled from the barrel at nearly three thousand feet per second, tore through the air. It splashed into the warm water of the Caribbean roughly five thousand yards away.

On His Iansislean Majesty’s Battlecruiser Queen Jessica, which was following Titan in line as they steamed south west, Midshipman Richard Parsten put his glass up to his eye and concentrated on the larger ship. A few moments later, he flipped through a nearby book. Once satisfied he had the proper answer, he descended to the quarterdeck and glanced about for the officer of the watch. Parsten found Commander Nicholas Mitchell, the gunnery officer, and saluted.

Sloppy, thought the first lieutenant, pursing his lips. I don’t care how much of a crunch this new expansion is putting on our officer corps, we shouldn’t have started sending midshipmen out to sea again. This pup is being seen by the men, and we have a reputation to maintain. He made a note to have a talk with Mr Parsten after the watch.

“Signal from flag, sir,” said Parsten, his voice much more crisp than his salute. A moment of silence passed, and the sixteen year old boy flushed slightly beneath his acne. “Er, the Admiral orders all ships to heave to as possible.”

“Mr Rearden?” called Mitchell over his shoulder.

“Sir!” replied the eleventh lieutenant sharply.

“Heave to. Keep an eye on the fleet.”

“Aye aye, sir!” A little overeager, perhaps, thought Mitchell. This is the sloppiest watch. Below him, Mitchell could feel the ship’s engines reversing as Rearden relayed the order to the helmsman buried deep in Jessica’s bowels.

“Any other signals, Mr Parsten?” asked Mitchell, turning to the midshipman again.

“Yes, sir - our number is to stand by to receive small craft.”

“Very good, Mr Parsten. Acknowledge, then keep an eye out for the boat. Mr Callisdrum, please give my compliments to the captain and inform him that the flag is sending over a boat.”

“Aye aye, sir,” replied another pimply-faced midshipman - at least Callisdrum managed to salute properly - before running off to the captain’s quarters.

---

“Situation, Mr Mitchell?” asked Captain Lord Phillip Clayburgh - the younger brother of Admiral the Marquess of Westergate - as he walked onto the bridge fifteen minutes later.

“Titan put her barge over just a few minutes ago...” started Mitchell.

“Her barge?” asked Clayburgh sharply. Mitchell could almost be seen to retreat physically from his captain’s tongue. Still, the first lieutenant managed to make one reply.

“Yes, sir. I know it would ordinarily be safer to use the cutter in open ocean, sir, but there’s hardly a swell to be seen and no breeze to speak of...”

“That’s not what I meant,” said Clayburgh. He stood out to the observation deck and took Parsten’s telescope in hand. “Just as I thought. The Admiral himself is on board.”

“Vice Admiral Hansfield is coming here, sir?” asked Mitchell. There was a note of panic hiding beneath his craggy face.

“He wouldn’t be using the barge if it was just the flag lieutenant,” snapped Clayburgh, trying rather unsuccessfully to hide his displeasure with Mitchell. “He’d just use the pinnace for that, wouldn’t he? The other ships must not be close enough to see.”

“I - I’ll get the salute off promptly, sir,” stuttered Mitchell.

“See that you do, Commander,” said Clayburgh, managing to get his temper under control at last. “Where’s the boatswain? Have him get the proper side party together at once!”

---

Vice Admiral Martin Hansfield, sitting with his staff amidships in the barge, heard the Jessica’s 4.9”/52 HA/LA guns start to crack off his fifteen gun salute at last and smiled grimly. He’d been timing it, of course - nearly ten minutes between when he set off from Titan and when the first gun went off. He would have to have words with Clayburgh about this.

Granted, he hadn’t signaled to the effect that he himself would be part of the party making for Queen Jessica, but he’d tried the same trick on Lieutenant Commander Taylor of the Adder before Clayburgh’s ship had joined Walmington Station. The destroyer had her first salute shot off inside of two minutes; a battlecruiser, with so many more eyes aboard, ought to be at least as quick.

Now, even as the last echoes of Jessica’s salute died away, the rest of the fleet started theirs. There was no way for Hansfield to be sure, of course, but he could have sword that he heard the pop of Adder’s guns go off before any others. He was a good man, that Taylor. Hansfield made a mental note to recommend him to the Admiralty for promotion.

Soon, the long, shallow barge had pulled up alongside the Jessica. Hardly a wave lapped at the side of the battlecruiser’s steel hull; he had been right in not using the cutter after all. Of course, if the weather picked up, he’d have to make use of Clayburgh’s boat and leave his barge temporarily. But there was nothing save clear horizons in every direction. From above him, Hansfield could hear the first call of the boatswain’s pipe. Grasping the wet ladder with both hands, he climbed up quickly, but slowly enough to make his entry properly dignified.

The call sounded again as he stepped onto the deck. Captain Lord Phillip himself was there to meet him. It still gave Hansfield unremitting pleasure to see the blue-blooded son-of-a-bitch salute him.

“Welcome aboard, Admiral,” said Clayburgh, respectfully. “We weren’t expecting you, sir.” That was as close to an apology for the slothful salute as Hansfield was likely to get with so many enlisted men standing about.

“I imagine not,” said Hansfield, carefully inspecting the side party, who were standing rigidly at attention. Try as he might, he couldn’t find a single imperfection in their appearance; Mitchell might be slow on the uptake, but he was thorough. “I don’t suppose I might be able to impose on your wardroom, Captain?” Like it or not, and despite his immense seniority, Hansfield was just a visitor on Clayburgh’s ship.

“Of course, Admiral,” replied Clayburgh. It was hard for him (and a skill carefully nurtured through his career) to sound properly respectful when speaking with a superior who was actually a social inferior. Now, after nearly twenty years as a King’s officer, he at last had it down. “Queen Jessica stands to your command. Would the Admiral care to follow me?”

“Thank you, Captain, but I believe I can find my way,” answered Hansfield, clasping his hands together and walking through the proper hatch. He’d been aboard Jessica enough over the past few weeks to know his way around, and he’d be damned if he let Clayburgh lead him about like a dog.

The wardroom’s not as nice as it is on Titan - of course, the Jessica wasn’t really designed as a flagship, reflected Hansfield as he walked in. The room, but for the captian’s steward, was empty. Every officer on board knew the Admiral was coming; experience taught them which room the Admiral would like to relax in and instinct taught them to avoid the Admiral at all costs.

“Now, then, Captain,” said Hansfield, opening the liquor cabinet of his own accord and mixing a drink himself while the steward stood by helplessly. “I’m afraid I have to return to Titan promptly, so I do hope you’ll excuse me if I don’t mince words?”

Thank God, thought Clayburgh. “Of course not, Admiral, though I’m sorry the pleasure of your visit has to end so soon,” he said.

“Very good - ah, do you care for a drink?” Hansfield had finished mixing his own.

Clayburgh was too clever to fall for the trick. “No, thank you, sir. But please don’t let me stop you.”

“As you will. As I was about to say, Captain, I’m afraid that I’m going to have to release the Jessica for detached duty.” Clayburgh arched an eyebrow at that news. “I just received word from the Admiralty; there’s some sort of trouble off the West African coast. Their Lordships want to make sure His Majesty’s interests and those of all his subjects are upheld. The main fleet will be continuing on to rendezvous with your brother.”

“Trouble, sir?” Hansfield nodded as he took a sip of his drink.

“Yes. A blockade of sorts. The situation seems to be getting rather touchy, and there’s an Iansislean diplomatic mission on the way to the capital of the blockaded country. His safety must be guarenteed, especially if the blockading powers start bombing.”

Clayburgh nodded his understanding, and Hansfield gritted his teeth; here was the reason he’d come over himself. “I’ve had to cut written orders for you.” Hansfield handed them over. “Their Lordships are promoting you acting Commodore for the duration of the mission. You’re to be given a free hand, Captain, but rest assured: their Lordships want no cock-ups.”

“I see,” replied Clayburgh, keeping his face carefully neutral. “Am I to be given other ships, sir?”

“Yes - the destroyers Valorous, Belligerent, and Belle.”

“How about the Walmies, sir? This is all very near their colonies: should I expect them to be out there too?”

“Their Lordships sent me no information on Walmington’s intentions,” replied Hansfield with a shrug. “It could be they don’t have any immediate interest in the situation. Keep an eye out for them all the same. Now then...” Hansfield withdrew a pocket watch and checked it. “I’m afraid I must be off, Commodore. Do take care of yourself, and God-speed.”

“Shall I escort the Admiral back to his boat?” asked Clayburgh, standing.

“No, thank you, Commodore,” said Hansfield, “I’m sure I can find my way. Good day.”

“What was that about, if you don’t mind me asking, captain?” asked Mitchell quietly after Clayburgh strode back onto the bridge.

“I’ve been promoted acting Commodore,” responded Clayburgh sharply. He knew there was no way that Mitchell could have guessed that, but couldn’t seem to keep the acid from his voice. He didn’t say anything about his other orders; Clayburgh tried to make it a personal goal not to let overarching missions interfere with the crew’s first concern, which was maintaining the Jessica. She could be a proper bitch if she tried, and there was no reason to distract them with thoughts of Africa.

“Please make your course south east and do turns for twenty six knots,” ordered Clayburgh to Sub Lieutenant Rearden, then turned himself towards the signal midshipman. “Mr Parsten, Valorous, Belligerent, and Belle will be accompanying us. Please have them do the same.” He ignored the chorus of ‘Aye, aye, sir!’s and instead rounded on Mitchell again. “Have you seen Commander McLaughlin?” Lieutenant Commander the Honorable Francis P. McLaughlin was Queen Jessica’s second lieutenant and navigation officer.

“No, sir. Shall I have a boy sent to his quarters?”

“Yes. Tell him I want to see him in my quarters as soon as possible.” Mitchell signaled to Callisdrum, who set off at once. Just as Clayburgh was about to set off, he turned back to Mitchell. “Oh, and Mr Mitchell?”

“Yes, sir?”

“As soon as Titan’s out of sight, I want a Commodore’s pennant, with proper salutes, put up.”

“Aye aye, sir,” replied Mitchell, who watched as the captain nodded and ducked through a hatch.

On their way North, detachments of IDF Marine Corps personnel have landed on the St. Helena islands of Ascention and St. Helena. The sparsely populated islands have been almost overrun with Marines, who have been busy preparing the airstrips with Precision Approach Radar systems and lengthening and improving the runways to handle large cargo and bomber aircraft arriving from the WA basing facilities in Sniper Country on the horn.

Prefab hangars are built at a crazy pace and then are covered in concrete to protect their contents...several 1000tonne capacity ULAs are arriving every couple of hours from the WA base with supplies and equipment.

SAM systems are set up around the island as many of the warships continue northwards to support the blockade. Airplanes jump between the WA bases shuttling supplies towards the front.

Anyone with sufficient satellite technologies might notice the arrival of a number of ballistic missiles on the islands that are quickly raised although no equipment necessary for nuclear warheads is seen in the area...which makes sense for the avowedly non-nuclear WA.

Asantehene Agaja Dagbo Found Dead

KUMASI, GHANA -- A horrific scene was discovered at the Manhyia Residence by Amadi Dagbo at approximately 12:45 AM this morning. Amadi, the cousin of Agaja Dagbo and heir to the throne, found his younger cousin laying motionless on his bed with two bullet holes in his head.

"Blood and brains were splattered everywhere. It was disgusting," said Ode Maga, the Asantehene's own personal assistant.

Authorities have confirmed that Mr. Dago was shot with a silenced Soviet-style pistol. Amadi Dagbo was the last one seen with Agaja before his death.

"We do have our suspects," said the Director of Domestic Affairs, Gezo Dangbo. "And they will not be released to the public as of yet."

The perimeter of Manhyia is overcrowded. Reporters, journalists, the Kumasi Guards, and Army Officials had flooded the scene almost immediately after Agaja's body was found.

Currently, the Director of Foreign Affairs -- Hugh Stein -- is set to be named as the temporary CEO of the Ouidah Corporation while Amadi Dagbo is the heir to the throne.

"We're in the process of deciding who will replace Mr. Dagbo," Stein has been quoted to say. "But the new CEO is a lesser concern here. A great tragedy has happened today. I send my grievances to Urbi, Agaja's wife, and to his father and mother. The world lost a great man today."

Tensions are high, especially with the current international pressure from foreign fiends attempting to intervene with the Ouidah's slave trade policy.

Stay tuned into your local news station to for news and updates. The Ouidah Corporation urges all citizens to remain calm while they diffuse this situation and scramble to name a new king... and CEO.

Not all slaves have someone cracking the whip behind them. In some societies, a slave can attain a high ranking and enjoy considerable status. You should be mindful of cultural differences and not rest upon the laurels of your Constitution.

And mark this. If you somehow feel that the Klatchian way of life is in disagreement with your precious constitutional beliefs, you'll find that war would not be an easy nor enjoyable enterprise.

Blake was in his quarters when the news of Dagbo's death reached the Isidonian battle group. The Paladin said nothing as the young yeoman delivered the report; in fact, he never glanced up from the information received with regards to the slaves' records. As the aid left, Blake set paper into his typewriter, and composed a message to the Regents.

"Having reviewed the newly acquired records of the human cargo, I have learned a disturbing fact. 27 of the 30 subjects are violent criminals (16 rapists, 11 murderers), with 15 of these being multiple offenders. (see attached documents) It is my belief, having reviewed all information about AFS project availiable to my clearance level, that these subjects are completely unsuitable for the needed tests. They are simply too dangerous.

"Matters are further complicated by the recent assassination of Ouidah CEO Agaja Dagbo. As the deal between Isidon and the Ouidah was primarily an oral agreement with Dagbo, this puts the future of the mission in question.

The Rear Admiral tapped a few keys to turn off the local news broadcast of Dagbo's death.

"Well this certainly complicates matters...Lieutenant"

> "Yes, sir."

"Tell our SIGINT fellows to start monitoring some of the civilian and governmental channels...tell them to look for the successor, if there is a clear successor."

> "Right away, sir"

This definitely makes it harder to negotiate...let's hope that this doesn't actually fall to a shoot out. Two stand offs and the first day of this blockade has yet to be over. The Rear Admiral turns his attention to the dispatches from the Captain of Strike Force Yang, tasked with intercepting the Yurka Fleet. Assassin Found

KUMASI, GHANA -- Ode Maga, Agaja Dagbo's trusted friend and personal assistant, turned himself in to federal authorities nearly twenty minutes ago. He confessed that he had murdered the Asantehene and even turned in the murder weapon.

Maga has been arrested. Although he has said nothing of it, authorities believe Maga was hired to assasinate Dagbo for disclosed reasons that cannot be revealed.

Mourning families praying outside of CEO Dagbo's home were shocked and infuriated to hear that Maga was indeed the assasin.

"I just can't believe Ode would do something like this," said a personal friend of Maga.

"That man... is a monster... not only did he murder our glorious leader, but he also murdered a friend. It's unbelieveable," said a mourning woman.

---

"Damnit," said Stein. "Maga was supposed to plant the murder weapon in Amadi's car. That asshole," he mumbled to himself. "He must be taken out before he says anything more. He turned himself in too early and failed to plant the murder weapon. He's bound to break and ruin everything."

"Hugh," said Mel Osbourne, Stein's trusted friend.

"What is it, Mel?"

"Everything is going to hell," Osbourne replied.

"I know. Mel, I need you to do me a favor."

"Oh no, I won't."

"Mel, you have to do this for me. As a friend."

"It's too risky, Hugh."

"Mel," implored Stein.

Osbourne sighed. "Very well."

Stein's face lit up. He was clearly happy that his friend had agreed. Agreed to now plan and carry out the assasination of Ode Maga.

"Let's get to work. We have less than 24 hours to pull everything together and eliminate Maga. We cannot let that bastard squeal on us. On this transition. This new era of the West African States. A WAS underneath the rule of a white man. A man of knowledge. A man of class. A man of civilization," noted Stein quietly.

"Amen."

There has been calls by CEO Dagbo for negotiations to commense on the matter of slave trading. His request is that our forces stay outside of West African State's territorial waters. Chimaea has been in international waters off WAS; we request you to do the same--our bloackade and quanrantine can be as easily maintained there as anywhere. He has requested that we send non-military aircraft only to land at Kumasi Airport. See full details attached.

We hope you're willing to give negotiation a chance.

Indeed, Admiral.
As the representative of Western Asia in this sector I can assure you that any peaceful means of achieving our goals is superior to the use of force. I have relayed the news of Dagbo's request to the State Department in Jerusalem, but as I am sure you are aware, Dagbo is no longer in charge.

We are attempting to collect intelligence information about his possible successors but the situation is still developing. If his replacements are willing to negotiate then we will gladly meet them at the negotiation table instead of on the field of battle...but we don't want to risk our negotiators as hostages.

I hope that the WAS and Ouidah officials are willing to give negotiation a chance...until then I'll try to avoid destroying too many of these blockade runners.

Yurka
21-04-2004, 05:18
Alia Yurka watched the Ouidah news from her cabin aboard the emperor's blessing. It appeared that the king and CEO was assassinated and now the assassin was found. She just hoped that all of the planning was still set to go. She was the youngest general in the empire and had the most to prove. She turned on the tele-monitor and viewed the bridge.

"Captain, did they respond to our previous statement?" Alia was leaning back in her chair, the sword she received on her 18th birthday last year resting on her lap, "Well?"

"Oh I'm sorry general! The assassination attempt is being displayed, I suppose it drew me in... No the Western Asia fleet did not respond, they might be taken back by the assassination attempt as well. Should we try getting by?"

"No... They might take that as an aggresive action. Have the chopper ready, I'll be going to Ouidah."

"Yes general Yurka! Shall I inform your father?"

"No, that won't be necessary. Just send this message..."

To: Western Asia

Due to your insistance on keeping us from entering the country an assassination attempt that could have been prevented was not. We are sending general Yurka to the country by helicopter along with sixteen fighter escorts. Because of you an innocent man is now dead, we hope in the future you will use knowledge to weigh your judgements and not blind fanaticism.

Sincerely, Captain Gratzky of the Emperor's Blessing

The chopper, accompanied by the fighters, quickly took off toward the coast. To Alia, this was no longer about slaves or respect, this was about keeping the country stable during the strenous time. The best of Yurka's special forces were aboard the planes to protect her from assassination attempts once they landed.

The note was handed to Sir Julian from a messenger; he quickly departed to continue on further errands.

(holy cow! I missed this bit - terribly sorry!)

“Oh...thank you, thank you very much,” said Sir Julian, tipping his hat at the messenger. But by the time he had fished a silver general out of his coin purse, the young man had already left. “Well!”

That evening, he settled in and had himself a nice, relaxing night’s sleep.

Meanwhile, a couple hundred miles south of the Cape Verde Islands, Queen Jessica and her tiny consorts steamed onwards towards the blockade. They had actually been detached near Guadalupe a day and a half before Sir Julian even arrived in the West African States. There was something to be said for pre-war Iansislean design; they might be poor vessels for sea-keeping, but their legs were long and fast.

The plane began it's decent into the country, the morning sun gliscining off the metalic wings.
" When we get off look for a man with a white cap, he'll be housing us at his place," said Yrello, his eyes darted out the window, the clouds were passing by like flys at a picnic.
" You Kiki, will get a job in the local sweatshop. This way we can easily acquire the chemicals we need" His voice dug deeper into his gut.
" What job are you going to get?" Asked a scrony young man.

These men barly knew each other, yet they were soon t pay the ultimate price together. Each member had some skill or another useful for the terror plot. Ultimatly the men were to save up enough money to build a chemical bomb. They would then infiltrate the parliment building in which the president was encumbered, detonating a large explosion that woyuld
cover the surrounding area in a hue of chemical gas.

"I don't know what i'll do, but thiers no time to frolic about plans at the moment, because were about to land."

While we will let your transports pass unhindered, we will not allow the rest of your fleet to pass through. Indeed, we hardly believe that thousands of soldiers could have prevented the assassination of Dagbo by his personal assistant.

We will not hinder General Yurka's envoy but we warn you against further attempts to advance into those waters. We are monitoring your progress and continued progress will be taken as an agressive attempt to reinforce military opponents of Western Asia--in that case your fleet will be destroyed in all haste.

We do not take the responsibility for assassins and the disloyal within governments. Dagbo and his policies were our opponents...he is gone but his policies may remain, and we were sent to have an effect upon the policies not upon the man.

The next morning, bright and early, Sir Julian woke and stretched. Today was his meeting with the Asantehene; he wondered if he ought to just walk up to the palace and knock.

The moving-picture box in his room was an enigma that had perplexed him for some time. He knew of their existence, of course - some of the finest families on the Shield owned one - but how to actually work the contraption was a mystery. Finally convincing himself that pushing a button or two wouldn’t make it explode, he sat down in front of it and considered the row of commands.

Hmm...’input’...that sounds like it would make the bloody thing turn on. Nothing happened. Channel up? What the devil does that mean? Apparently nothing; hitting the button did nothing. Volume...that one I understand...aha! Power? Like make power go into it? Well, like Granny always said, can’t accomplish anything by just sitting about. With a click and a hiss, the set turned on.

Whoever had been watching it last set the sound much too high - and left it on a static channel. After a few moments of sheer, abject terror, Sir Julian managed to make it shut up by hitting ‘volume down’ a number of times. Some more experimentation proved the worth of the channel up or down buttons; in no time at all, he had tuned in to the local news reels.

“Just like the radio-wave receivers back home,” he smiled, patting himself on the back. And then he shut up and watched the program.

Several minutes and one call to his home office later - “This is the Iansislean Trade Consulate in the Walmingtonian Cape Colonies...please hold...we’re sorry, but we’re not accepting incoming calls right now...*click* - and one to Lord Inswick - his secretary didn’t believe Sir Julian was in the foreign service - later, he was calling the local government, to find out what he could. And see if they could contact Ianapalis for him.

First Fleet, in international waters off West African States

Admiral Wilder watched the news broadcasts in silence, with Walton and a few other officers alongside. After a while, the Admiral switched it off.

"All right. So what're we dealing with now?"

One of her officers opened his mouth to speak but Walton got in first. "This changes little. Dagbo was appearing reasonable, offering negotiation and so on. He must have been killed by the powerful slave owners in the country."

"Is negotiation still possible?"

"Who knows. It depends on who replaces Dagbo... This Stein fellow, possibly."

"All right. So we wait till they've organised it out, and contact the person who gets to the top. If... if the situation in WAS disintegrates further, what are we going to do? Let Yurka handle it?"

Walton shook his head. "We must not let Yurka handle it. We don't want one pro-slavery administration replaced with another."

Wilder nodded. "Right. Contact Chimaea and inform the CAFHC that if the situation on the ground turns unmanageable we will directly intervene, whilst maintaining the blockade. I want to speak to the Governor ASAP. Ready the diplomatic team in any case. Contact our allies and inform them of this."

The First Fleet, stretching across the horizon, slowly approached the gathered forces, but stopped short of joining the blockade. Instead, it maintained a distance behind and to the side of the Yurka and Isidon Valley forces.

The Ouidah Corporation urges all citizens to remain calm while they diffuse this situation and scramble to name a new king... and CEO.

Damn, that really complicates things, mused Senator Joseph Nguhyai as his plane made its way from Syskeyiapolis to Kumasi airport.

The Senator, a member of the Syskeyian Democracy party (one of the major political parties in Syskeyia and the party of President and First Consul Sukothai), was a man of moderate height and decent build. His complexion betrayed a Chinese-Vietnamese ancestry, but his blood probably had a lot more nations and peoples mixed in, given Syskeyia's long history of interracial marriages.

He was not going to go alone. Along with the usual diplomatic staff to help things go smoothly, the Senator brought along a squad of the elite Parliamentary Guard brigade. These men, the finest of the finest in the Syekeyian army, wore an outfit that resembles the armor of the Syskeyian soldier at the time of the 1300-1303 civil war except for the fact that the cloth was purple and not red. But appearances can decieve. For their mail and plates were made out of mithril, and while they carried swords their main armament was, for most of them, a modified M16 with the metal being shiny white, fully equipped with a spike bayonet and S2 grenade launcher.

As for Senator Nguhyai himself, he wore the traditional purple cloak of a Syskeyian Senator. While all Senator were required to wear the cloak while performing their legislative duties, it was optional to wear it outside of the Parliamentary hall (OOC: They still have to wear clothing in public, though. :P ). And it was this he debated: should he attend in a normal Western business suit, or should he wear the garb of a foreign legislature.

There was one thing he was sure about, though: whatever he wore, he would take his M1911 pistol, a relic from his soldier days, and his greatest weapon, the senatorial sword.

God bless,

The Republic of Syskeyia

Kumasi Federal Prison -- 11:47 PM

The night sky was dark and the weather was cool, but dry. Lights dotted the skyline in the not-too-distant city of Kumasi. Kumasi Federal Prison was located outside of Kumasi and held roughly 100 federal criminals.

Ode Maga was in an isolated cell, he would be interviewed in thirteen minutes -- midnight. After the interview, which would surely be long and tedious, Maga would be transported to a private location. As of now, only high-ranking government officials and Mel Osbourne knew where Ode Maga was.

A dark figure wearing a security guard apparel walked up the short stone steps. Reaching into his pants pocket, he removed a gold-colored key and inserted it into the door knob and turned it. The door creaked as it he slowly opened it.

"Who's there?" said another guard.

"Nightshift," replied the dark figure.

"Let me see me authentication. Stay there," said the guard.

"Ok, come a bit closer, I've got my authorization card here," answered the dark figure.

As the security guard approached the dark figure, the mysterious man reached for his pistol.

"What are you reaching for?"

Pff!

Blood splattered everywhere as the guard fell backward.

Thump!

The dark figure dragged the body into a nearby closet and shut the door. He proceeded down the hallway turning at the staircase to the basement. The man scurried down the stairs carrying a mysterious object under his arm. After he reached the basement, he began fiddling with object. A few beeps sounded and laid the object on the floor. He turned, ran back up the stairs, down the corridor, and out of the prison.

The building exploded.

---

Maga presumed dead

KUMASI, GHANA -- Ode Maga, the assassin of our beloved Agaja Dagbo, is presumed dead after a large explosion rocked Kumasi Federal Prison about two hours ago. Maga's assassination has led authorities to believe that he was paid to kill Dagbo. They have begun to look through Maga's bank accounts and money transfers. What they found was shocking.

Nearly one million Francs were transferred by an anonymous character to a Swiss bank account under the name of Ode Maga. Although we do not know as of yet who transferred the money, authorities have a hunch that Amadi Dagbo, Agaja's cousin, is the culprit. His bank transfers reveal that he recently withdrew one million Francs shortly before the money was transferred to Maga's account.

Amadi's lawyers have told us that Mr. Dagbo is unavailable for an interview, most likely because he is afraid to admit that he murdered Agaja. Amadi, of course -- like all criminals, has denied these charges.

"The situation is deteriorating rapidly, General."

Marcus Blake sat in the Leviathan's cramped radio room, having finally acquired a direct line to General Richter, Isidonian Minister of War, at Air Corps Control.

"We're aware of the situation, Paladin." The General's voice was gruff, to say the least; an almost condescending tone, of a person secure in his belief that he was superior to those around him. "The Regents agree with your astute observation: Dagbo misrepresented the quality of the human goods; his slaves clearly did not meet the requirements we had laid out prior to payment. Furthermore, with his death, we can safely assume that the deal is cancelled."

"Understood, sir. Shall I make preparations to depart, then?"

"Quite the contrary. With the Ouidah government in upheaval, the Council has agreed that this presents our nation with an excellent opportunity. A new leadership is coming to West Africa, and it would be most beneficial if that leadership was sympathetic to Isidonian interests. We are prepared to assist in the creation of such a government, naturally. I recommend setting the group down to conserve fuel. Supply routes have been mapped, and transport zeppelin are ready to depart, if the Ouidah accept our offer."

"Very good, sir. I'll begin the landing preparations at once. Blake out."

“Mr Mitchell!” The first lieutenant could be seen to cringe as his captain and commodore walked onto Queen Jessica’s quarterdeck in his typical foul mood. “Anything to report this watch?”

“N-no, sir,” replied Mitchell. Clayburgh made an acknowledging grunt, then turned to gaze out over the endless blue expanse of the south Atlantic. He looked so calm and serene that Mitchell dared to ask him a question.

“Sir, a lot of the crewmen have been coming up to ask me about our mission, but I don’t even know where we’re going. I was wondering, sir, if you might...ah...might care...to ...fillmein.” Mitchell had started out fairly strong, but soon withered as Clayburgh, his eyes tough and unforgiving, turned back on him. The last few words came out in one big rush.

“I was not aware it was my duty to reveal my secret orders except on a need-to-know basis,” said Clayburgh acidly. Mitchell took a step back. “The men will do their duty, and kindly let me get on with mine. And that is what you are to tell any man who questions you. Clear?”

“B---aye aye, sir, very clear.”

“I don’t think it was, Mr Mitchell.” Clayburgh stepped to one side of his first lieutenant. “Perhaps you’d care to share that protest that died on you lips?”

“I, er, sir, it was Brown who asked me.”

“Brown?”

“Yes, sir. He’s rated as a gunner’s mate in Tuesday turret.” Mitchell drew up short again.

“And?” prompted Clayburgh.

“And, sir, please - Brown’s just been pressed, sir, right after the refit. He worries about his family back at home, sir; he has young ones, three of them.”

Clayburgh’s eyes were still cold. “And?”

“They worry about him, sir, and he them.” Mitchell was stumbling on now; the plea had gathered its own momentum regardless of his desire to pull it up short. “He’d just like to know if there’s going to be any danger, sir.”

“We all take our risks in the King’s service,” said Clayburgh, turning his back to gaze out to sea again. “Now, if you please, Mr Mitchell, I should like to be able to think without constantly being interrupted by trivialities.”

Mitchell was absolutely crushed. He wanted nothing better than to hide from this man; to run away. But it was his watch, and he could no more abandon his duty than stop breathing all together.

Clayburgh, meanwhile, had shoved all thought of Mitchell from his mind. He continued to stare out to sea. The African coast was out there somewhere; they were getting awfully close to what the Admiralty’s intelligence had identified as the outer perimeter of the blockade.

Greetings to you Inquisitor Vallejo!

Ah, so our slave goods are not good enough for you, eh? These were some of our best-tamed men, but anyway, that is not a concern of mine now anyway. The slaves are unneeded and I personally give you the order the execute the slobbish fiends.

It is a good thing to see that you are offering peacekeeping forces; although I do not wish to confess it, the nation is on the brink of civil war. This all those rats awaiting outside our waters need. If civil war were to break out, they would expose our 'temporary' weakness and rush to the aid of the rebels, regardless of whom they may be. Your Airborne Troopers and Paladins would be greatly desired, especially in the city of Kumasi where we expect rebel fighting to be the hottest.

Well, it is also good to see that you wish to continue trade with our people. As you know, the Ouidah offers a variety of goods, most notably gold and ivory. I suggest that your ambassador lodge at the Ouidah Corporate Hotel in the city of Ouidah. The cities of Ouidah and Abomey seem to be the most secure and safest locations at this time and we wouldn't want your ambassador to be harmed.

We'll be expecting you.

Tensions thicken

Tensions in the Akan/Ashanti-dominated region of Ghana have greatly intensified. Though relations between the Akan/Ashanti peoples of Ghana and the Fon peoples of Benin have been repaired, the recent assassinations have withered away at the newly formed bond between the two peoples.

The Fon peoples are located in the Ouidah homeland of Benin and are unquestionably supportive of the Corporate Government. They know very well that a Communist society (authentic or not) is very detrimental, until 1989 they lived under one -- it destroyed the people, land, and the economy.

To the west, the peoples of Ghana are less supportive of the Corporate Government that was founded (as well as the enslavement of "criminals"); however, the abolition of income taxes and establishment of Kumasi as the national capital had silenced their dissenting opinions. Now, however, that Agaja Dagbo (a Fon) and Ode Maga (an Ashanti) are both dead... their dissent has grown. Dagbo was the prominent reason for holding together the province of Ghana and with his assassination, the people are distrustful of the "fiendish" Hugh Stein.

The nation is a powderkeg waiting to explode.

<OOC: that was more of a documentary statement rather than a news report. as you can tell, the media is biased and overly supports the government. >

Senator Trudo Zinsou, commonly known as the People's Senator, packed his briefcase. Inside he stored documents, speeches, and what appeared to be a weapon of some sort. He slipped on a bullet-proof vest and walked to his desk where his glasses laid. After a quick cleaning, he put them on, picked up his briefcase, and left the room.

The the sky was a bright orange, the day had just begun, and Senator Zinsou was to make a "calming, orderly state of city address to the people" to assure their loyalty to the government. Zinsou had other plans in mind.

The Senate of the West African States consisted of forty senators. Thirty were appointed by the CEO of the Ouidah Corporation to serve ten years while ten were elected democratically by the people of all three provinces (Ghana, Togoland, Benin). It was common, however, for the Ouidah Corporation to plant its puppets into these "People's Elections." There were isolated cases once in a while, though, where an actual "man of the people" would be elected and Senator Zinsou was the most recent example. The Ouidah were wary of allowing Zinsou, a stern socialist, to run for office but believed that had he been killed a rebellion would spark.

"He's only one man," Hugh Stein noted.

Meanwhile, Senator Zinsou proceeded to his limousine escort awaiting outside of the Kumasi City Hotel and stepped in carefully.

"Are you ready, Senator?" asked the driver, Ben Jargon.

"Yes, Ben; just drive," replied Zinsou.

The black limousine had tinted windows and was neatly polished, a sign of a wealthy man. However, Zinsou was by no means a wealthy man. As a boy, he worked days and nights on his father's farm. The farm never grew much, only making the work much harder. When he was 18, he traveled to Kumasi to study at the University of Science and Technology. After four years (displeased with his current goals), Zinsou went on to law school and became the "People's Man." It was after this he decided to enter the world of politics. He lost his first election in 2010, the year that the West African States had formed, but won his second election in early 2020.

The limousine rolled through the streets of Kumasi -- some extravagent laced with skyscrapers and magnificient statues, others povery-stricken with run-down, graffiti coated buildings. Beggars were to be seen everywhere in these areas of town. These areas were often off limits to tourists, "coincidentally."

The limo finally stopped at the side of tall building, about twenty yards ahead of them was a giant plaza decorated with many colors, vendors, musicians, and statues. Kumasi Plaza, the lifeblood of Kumasi. A podium had already been set-up for Zinsou and thousands of Zinsou supporters as well regular Kumasi residents cheered as the Senator made his way to the podium, carrying his briefcase. Around the perimeter were about eighty Kumasi Guards and about four hundred military personnel patrolled the streets leading to the plaza. Most, however, were supporters of Zinsou as well -- something uncommon for government workers. Zinsou had handpicked these men to protect him, and it was a good thing he had done so. Had these men been your regular run-of-the-mill soldiers, Zinsou would be dead five minutes into his speech.

The Senator spoke, "Esteemed citizens of Kumasi."

A loud applause followed.

"It is to our dismay that our leader, Agaja Dagbo was assassinated two nights ago. Last night, his assassin, Ode Maga too was killed in a large explosion at the Kumasi Federal Prison.

"It is quite clear who concocted these assassinations. The goverment. Dagbo had considered to haggle with the foreigners parked outside of our nation. The foreigners disgusted by the shackles of slavery which holds this nation by its throat! How can I be sure that a goverment official is responsible for this and not a prominent slave owner?

"First and foremost, these slave owners are employees of the Ouidah Corporation! That is why these slavers 'out of gratitude for the government' offer their slaves' labor to the Ouidah Corporation's building projects. In fact, none of the large slave owners are actually independent businessmen. The only ones 'independent' from the reins of our despicable government are those who own one, maybe two personal slaves. And most times, these slaves are not mistreated by their owners.

"Second, why would the Ouidah Corporation allow rival businesses to arise? The Ouidah have a monopoly on this nation's 'free market.' How many major industries are not owned by the Ouidah Corporation? The Ouidah claim that this is a 'free market' nation when it is nothing but a monopolized corporate mess!

"I hereby implore my fellow Akans, Ashantis, Ewes, and Fons to rise up against the tyranny of the Ouidah Corporation! Let us move forward and establish a utopia where poverty will be no more! A utopia where the rich will not use the worker as a tool to make themselves wealthier! A utopia where the worker has a say in company policy! A utopia in which the government cares for the people! From each according to his ability, to each according to his need! Huzzah!"

The crowd cheered uncontrollably.

Zinsou continued, "Let us tear down the oppresive Ouidah and free our people from oppression. It will, regrettably, take violence to overthrow such tyrants; but in the end, it will be for a better tomorrow! Forward!"

Zinsou drew his pistol and fired two rounds into the air.

Ouidah, Benin

"God damn that Zinsou. I knew we shouldn't have let him run for office. Fuck. Shit. Crap," cursed Stein. "We must contact our allies quickly if we are to squash this rebellion. There's already violence in the streets as some rogue soldiers are supplying the rebels with weapons. This uprising must be extinguished before those pussies blockading us can get aid to Zinsou. Move in the Second Division to combat the rebels as of now. We need to deliver a message to the ones still loyal to us."

Two hours later

Each and every television network across the WAS was interrupted. Hugh Stein's face appeared as he prepared to deliver a message to the people across the nation.

"Citizens of the West African States, I have some very unpleasant news to report to you. You probably already know what this news is from the ONN, but for those of you who do not know -- the unpatriotic senator Trudo Zinsou has taken action into his own hands. He has decided to terrorize our great and freedom-loving people... with acts of terrorism. Reported deaths have already reached 44 in Kumasi. We must not let this menace continue.

"I implore you to aid your government in eliminating this man of terror from our beautiful lands. The military awaits you arrival and any man or woman who serves in the Ouidah National Militia will be gifted with highest honors. You will receive tax breaks on anything you purchase, and will be the first to be escorted to safety should a natural disaster occur. You are brave men and women. Prove it to the rest of the world. Fight terrorism. Fight this anti-African man."

"All stations prepare for water landing. Repeat, all stations prepare for water landing."

The message was broadcast at intervals over Leviathan's intercom system, setting off a flurry of activity within the vessels. Hatches, doors, and portholes clanged shut and locked into place around the ship, while outside, cannon and machinegun emplacements withdrew into the thick hull.

"All ventral turrets and gun ports secure, Chief. Fanjets A through D secured, E through G retracting."

Master Chief Robert Stoner nodded, glancing up from a clipboard at the engineer delivering the report. "Good. Begin float deployment."

Outside the massive vessel, the last pairs of huge turbofan jets were retracting into watertight cowlings. On the ventral side, sets of large, metal pontoons began to extend from beneath the wings and hull of the ship.

"Floats A through E deployed, Chief."

"Excellent." Stoner hailed the bridge over the intercom. "Ready here, Paladin Sir."

"Good work, Chief." Blake answered. He, like the rest of the bridge crew, had buckled themselves to their seats, in preparation for descent. "All hands, secure for landing. Helm, decrease rotor output. Bring us down nice and easy."

***

Off the West African coast, the Isidonian flagship Leviathan began its slow descent to the water. The massive ship settled onto the ocean's surface with remarkable grace and ease, supported by a series of huge, boyant pontoons.

Air destroyers Phoenix and Emperor's Hand performed similar manuevers, coming to rest a few leagues distant of the Leviathan, but closing slowly with the flagship. Ilead and Oddessey remained airborne for the time being, having enough fuel to maintain an aerial patrol around the Isidonian battle group.

Large doors slid open atop the three now-seaborne airships, and elevators brought jet transports and gungyros to the upper flightdecks. A handful of the gyrocraft joined patrols around the seaborne ships, but most took off to escort the transports to airfields and staging areas in the Ouidah's capital, Kumasi.

Over the next 24 hours, such convoys would become commonplace, landing a grand total of six hundred Airbornes and Paladins, as well as trucks, field vehicles, and other support equipment, in various Ouidah cities, to assist with peace keeping efforts. Three hundred of these soldiers were flown directly to Kumasi, with the remainder to be dispersed in such a manner as the Ouidah deemed necessary. Of course, further reinforcements were en route from Isidon, though they would take some time to arrive.

Formations of Isidonian soldiers marched through the Kumasi's main thoroughfair, moving almost as a single organism, perfectly ordered and diciplined. At the forefront of the procession marched several teams of soldiers in light khaki uniforms and caps, each bearing a sabre at their hip, and the standard GU-9 .30-06 repeating rifle on their shoulder. Above the left elbow of each man was a scarlet armband, bearing the gold eagle crest of the Paladins.

The rest of the soldiers wore uniforms of light grey, streaked with tiger-stripes of darker grey and black; the standard uniform of the Airborne Brigade. GU-9 rifles were slightly rarer here, finding a one-to-two ratio in favor of the lighter GU-4 .30 repeating carbine. A close observer would note that the leader of each Airborne team also wore a red armband, with the Paladin eagle.

Overhead, light transport gyros delivered light-blue and grey clad Paladin Longunners to rooftops of buildings near to important or sensetive facilities. Most of these men carried GU-9b "Sharpshooter" rifles, though for every three of those, there was one Model 10 .50 bolt-action.

At the gates to the Ouidah capital, the procession of soldiers halted, standing at attention. A figure clad in a sharp, red uniform, with silver trim, stepped from the lead field car, to meet with the Ouidah's interim leader, Hugh Stein.

"Paladin Richard Castille, field commander, at your service."

Shots fired in Kumasi

Forty-four Ghanaians were already dead in Kumasi. Rogue Kumasi Guardsmen and Army personnel had supplied the rebel troops with ammunition, rifles, grenades, and rocket launchers. At this moment, there were nearly 8,000 rebel forces in Kumasi -- two hundred of which were well-trained personnel. Machine gun fire crackled and rifle fire rattled as the streets became a close combat battlefield. Most firefights consisted of no more than eight rebels and eight or so Ouidah forces, however, as more men and women joined rebel forces... the battles were soon to grow in size. A battle camp had been established by rebel forces and was secured by some 800 troops.

Senator Zinsou had been escorted by his personal guards to an undisclosed location in Kumasi to prevent any assassination attempts. Zinsou did not do this out of fear, he hid himself for a very good reason. If Zinsou were to be killed, the rebellion would waver and eventually break. Senator Zinsou did not want this. He wanted freedom and equality for the peoples of West Africa. Thus, personal protection was the only solution.

It would only be an hour or so until 5,000 government reinforcements would arrive.

"Greetings Paladin Castille," said Mel Osbourne, the acting Director of Foreign Relations.

Osbourne had drove out to the port to meet with the Paladin personally and to escort him back to Hugh Stein.

Osbourne continued, "Mr. Stein is expectiong you. We have prepared an escort to take you to the Ouidah Corporation HQ. Come now, it isn't too far away. Much has happened in our nation and blood has been spilled. We must strategize to prevent any further insurgents from arising."

{As noted earlier, Isidon has cancelled plans for the slave trade and switched gears to a peacekeeping role within the Ouidah controlled areas, in an effort to guide the re-establishment of government (along lines which they hope to map out). The blockade relates, as far as I can tell, specifically to slave-trade related traffic.}

Off of the WAS coast, near the Isidon Valley Forces

In spite of the rhetoric of the blockade, the transports were allowed to pass without even being targeted by WA target-highlight radars. The commanders had decided to allow apparently stabilizing aid to pass to the mainland, but since none of the larger ships had attempted to pass the blockade's full extent of collapse or negligence remains unclear.

The main ships remain 'highlighted' by WA targeting radars but the ships do not appear to be advancing on the Isidon forces at the moment.

Western Asian media is reporting on the fighting in the area but the Government has yet to declare sides in the ongoing battles.

The State Department of Western Asia issues a message:

We have asked the Defense Department to authorize their forces to take on political and social refugees from the WAS who seek refuge from the developing civil conflict there.

The DoD has informed us that WA forces are scouting out locations on the Canary, Madeira, and Azores island groups to serve as temporary refugee locations. Personnel from the St. Helena group are already focusing on contingency plans for the establishment of refugee stations there if overflow from the other locations cannot be successfully accomodated at those sites. Radio broadcasts into the WAS have begun and seek to inform possible refugees of the offer of a helping hand.

Elements of the Mobility Air Command including at least a dozen Ultra Large Airlifters (ULAs) have been mobilized and deployed to the region to collect waiting refugees. The models deployed include the largest airlifters in the MAC's fleet: CV/A-7 ULAs (SkyCat™ 1000), CV/A-6 ULAs (SkyCat™ 600), and CV/A-5b ULAs (SkyCat™ 220). These units will meet up with WA forces deployed across the region and will transport refugees from there to appropriate collection and processing sites.

The DoD has also asked us to let you know that the blockade on Slavery-related military personnel and goods remains in effect although we are allowing forces that have declared their dedication to serving as a stabilizing force within the WAS to pass through with lighter forces such as infantry and light equipment.

Updates will be issued as the situation develops.

Attention, foreign blockaid.

In approximately three days time, a convoy of zeppelins and medium gyroships shall arrive off the African coast. These craft are transporting additional peacekeeping forces, as well as fuel and commestables. We trust this shall not be an issue with the blockaid.

At this time, all plans for slave trade between Isidon and the West African states have been put on hold, until stability can be restored to the region.

Inquisitor Vallejo has been assigned as ambassador to the Ouidah, on behalf of the Priest Regents of Isidon, and shall be arriving on the first Zeppelin, the Seventh Son. Those who wish a more civil resolution to the slavery issue should consider themselves free to communicate with him.

"Mr. Osbourne," Castille nodded, following the man to Stein's chambers. "Our role here is primarily to supplement your existing police and security forces. The men are under orders to return fire, but not instigate."

Outside, Paladin teams had linked up with loyal members of the Kumasi police, to establish checkpoints around the capital. Greyclad Airborne teams loading to half-tracks and trucks, for transport to foot or motorized patrol routes, several bound for the impoverished Kumasi ghettos.

Fighting intensity increases

With the expected arrival of the brave, patriotic 2nd Division of the First Army, as well as allied support, fighting between rebel forces and the combined Ouidah/Allied coalition has intesified. Also contributing to the intestity increase is the enlistment of more rebel troops.

Ouidah authorities commented on the rebel force stating, "We estimate that the insurgent fighting force numbers at about 40,000 untrained, disorganized militiamen. The Zinsou Liberation Army, as they refer to themselves as, has been unable to coordinate attacks or defenses at all. Any organized attacks seem to stem from individual 'platoons' led by the 'sergeants of the ZLA,' despite the lack of a ranking and command system."

At the time, the war seems to be at a stalemate -- mostly because of the insurgent use of terrorist tactics against government forces.

Authorities refused to comment on further invasion plans.

Iansisle
28-04-2004, 11:40
“More bad news out of West Africa, sir,” sighed Commander Leyland, setting a thick folder down on Grand Admiral Sir Richard Tri’s mahogany desk. He looked overworked; that wasn’t really a surprise. Collecting intelligence reports, running them past the Third Sea Lord for approval, and then down to the First Sea Lord to be acted upon was a stressful, time consuming job. The Royal Iansislean Navy’s survival as an effective fighting force depended upon the information he gathered being correct, regardless if the eventual responsibility fell on higher shoulders. “It looks as though the situation on the ground is worsening quickly.”

“Any word from our man in Kumasi?” Sir Richard horridly butchered the pronunciation, but Leyland either didn’t notice or had too much tact to point it out to a vastly superior officer.

“No, sir. We’ve not heard anything from Sir Julian. Then again, communications with Kumasi are rather unreliable at this point, sir. And, well, we’re relying on the Foreign Ministry to keep in touch with their own personnel.” Leyland allowed himself a tired smile. The numbers of jokes circled about in Naval Intelligence about the idiots over in Jameston just barely rivaled those about the Army or Flying Corps.

The First Sea Lord, however, was not in a joking mood. He pushed his reading glasses (an admission of age which had only been undertaken with the greatest regret and complaint) up his nose and flipped the file open. The introduction paragraph was enough to make him take of his glasses and consider Leyland again.

“We have to get our man out of there.”

“Yes, sir.” Leyland’s subordinate attitude - exactly what a mere commander needed to do in the First Sea Lord’s presence - still irritated Sir Richard no end. He stood up and, clasping his hands behind his back, started to pace his office. Leyland could see that the carpet was well worn, and it had just been replaced two years ago.

“I suppose I oughtn’t trouble you with my job right now,” said Sir Richard at last. Leyland wisely didn’t answer. “I suppose Sir James will be needing you back promptly?” Tri referred to Admiral Sir James Keith, the Third Sea Lord and Leyland’s immediate superior.

“Not immediately, sir,” Leyland replied. “I’ve got a report to deliver to Admiral Lord North Brettey first about that longshoreman strike in Empire.” Sir Richard’s face grimaced in displeasure with the reminder of a threat very close to home. Nearly ninety per cent of the Commonwealth’s crude oil was shipped out from that Dianatrani port to refineries on the Shield. Any restriction on that supply would prove very damaging for the Fleet. The Seventh Earl of North Brettey, as Second Sea Lord, would have to make sure that the black gold continued to flow.

“Give his Lordship my compliments,” said Sir Richard at last. He wasn’t too fond of North Brettey; the Earl had been appointed to the Admiralty mostly because his family had done a favor long ago for the family of the current First Lord, Baron Linhower. “And if you see Captain Conroy, please tell him to come to my office.”

“Aye aye, sir.” Leyland saluted smartly with the sort of crispness that only hanging about the Admiralty could teach and then turned and walked out, leaving Tri with only his thoughts to keep him company.

He didn’t know nearly as much about Captain Lord Phillip Clayburgh as he’d like to for a man on the spot. His older brother, the Marquess Westergate, was an accomplished officer with a string of wartime victories and prestigious commands to his name. In fact, Admiral Lord Westergate was even now the Commander Home Fleet, the highest sea going command in the Royal Iansislean Navy.

The things Tri did know about Clayburgh were mostly reports from his immediate superiors - Rear Admiral Halders, area commander of the Bay of Bengal, Admiral Rice, the Lord Commander South China Seas Fleet, and Rear Admiral Hansfield, the senior officer on Walmington Station. Halders was cautiously supportive of the young officer, but thought him too aggressive; Rice found him almost too passive, but showing some promise; and Hansfield was unremittingly negative about every aspect of Clayburgh’s performance.

Sir Richard sighed and sat back down in his all too comfortable chair. By long standing tradition, it was not the First Lord’s job to countermand the orders of the man on the spot; only to issue recommended courses of action based on current intelligence. On one hand, that policy had developed a long line of self-reliant, proactive officers; on the other, it made Iansisle’s top naval officer feel just the least bit helpless.

((more to come later; I intended to flesh out what's happening on Jessie and to Sir Julian, but I'm afraid I'm just much too tired right now! Sorry!))

New Sydney International Airport, Chimaea

Lady Bryce sat back in the uncomfortable chair and looked out of the wall-length windows which were between the terminal and the runnaways. The blunt nose of the Governor's jet faced the windows as the refuelling and restocking went underway.

She felt uncomfortable, having become used to catching a definitely non-luxury military transport amongst her platoon. Now she had not only a jet to herself, but also an empty terminal, with only the black-suited Governor's Guard lounging against the walls, giving off an aura of barely constrained violence. She had attempted to talk to one or two but they had only looked blankly at her and been very polite.

Outside, the Winter chill was being swept off the runnaways constantly by the cleaning vehicles. Lady Bryce watched them bemusedly, thinking about the tropical weather in Colombia, before realising that Mel, one of a seemingly endless supply of official aides, was hovering nervously just in her line of sight. Lady Bryce smiled pleasantly at the woman and she came and sat besides her.

"Governor, there have been developments in Africa..."

Lady Bryce sighed. "Yes?"

"The conflict between the rebels and the government of the West African States is still raging, almost a stalemate. The Isidon Valley forces are keeping the peace in the the main city, but the far-flung regions are a mess. The Foreign Ministry has forwarded a report that several NGOs fear for the lives of civilians.

"Isidon is apparently bringing in more troops on the ground to try to ward off this eventuality."

"I see. Hmm... Suspend the greenlight on Operation Amistad. I want a satlink with the Prime Minister, General Garrison and the Foreign Minister ASAP. Also contact the Syskeyians and ask what they plan."

"Yes Governor, right away."

As the woman headed off, Lady Bryce turned back to gazing out of the windows, her brow furrowed with worry.

The guns silenced momentarily at the intersection near the Kumasi City Hotel.

Sergeant Azomino Ahomadegbe peered out. Littering the center of the intersection were bodies, shells, and debris. After six long hours of battle, Azomino's men had managed to overpower the government force defending the City Hotel.

Azomino held his rifle in one hand. He was dressed in street clothes, what one would expect to see from an average civilian. Since the rebels were by no means unified except for their common goal of a Socialist West Africa, military uniforms were not standard.

"Let's move," he said. "You there, relay this back to home base."

Azomino's platoon was a sub-division of the main fighting force in Kumasi. The rebels in Kumasi consisted of a loose coalition of platoons from around the nation stationed at a battle camp to the north. Some 1,000 rebels were stationed at this camp, deploying when needed. Azomino and his fifty followers had taken up the "challenge," as it was called, to capture the Kumasi City Hotel. Since there was no unified force or battle plan, top officials assigned "challenges" and "goals" for the various platoons to accomplish to further the rebel cause in hopes of ousting the Ouidah.

He moved forward from the building he was hiding behind. On the left side of the street his comrades also moved to the center square, advancing to the Hotel. Soon, each man lined themselves on the both sides of the doorway. Azomino nodded. His brother, Odion, kicked the door open and the men flowed in from both sides. A burst of rifle fire followed.

"Go upstairs, make sure no one leaves," Azomino said to Odion.

Odion saluted.

The sea was calm, the cloudy skies lit a burning orange and red by the last rays of the setting sun. The surface of the sea looked like it was on fire, with the distant strip of coastline dark against the sunset.

The man calling himself 'Mr. Walton' looked out at the beautiful scene and reflected that in other circumstances, it was an attractive and awe-inspiring setting. In other circumstances.

He pulled the zipper of his black and rough-textures frogsuit up to his neck and adjusted the harness which was around his chest, locking it into place. The suit had a bumpy, almost rubbery texture and was clear not designed for speed--but to keep the wearer's body heat from escaping.

Standing beside him, Rear Admiral Kennedy and Admiral Wilder looked on in silence. A yoeman waited until Walton had suited up and fixed the light breathing aparatus on his head and the tanks onto the top of his backpack.

Wilder shook her head. "We could arrange a discreet air-drop, you know."

Walton shrugged. "This way is safer. This way I could have come from anywhere... An air-drop could leave traces back to Chimaea."

There was nothing much anyone could say to that, so the Admirals didn't. Walton picked up his M16 A4 rifle and broke it down to components before storing it away on his backpack. Most of his equipment was bought on the black market to ensure non-Chimaean origin.

When he finished, he nodded to the Admirals. "Well... no time like the present, eh?"

Underwater launch-hold of the CSS New Sydney

Walton did a final equipment check, then released his grip on the side railing and let himself sink below the waterline of the launch-hold. He swam to one of the ports that lined the outer wall, and gave the ready signal. A second later, the port opened as the level of the hold went up, and he swam out into the sea, holding the diving propulsion system in front of him.

When he was far enough from the New Sydney, he activated the propulsion system. the powerful motor activated and pulled him along after it, heading for the African coast.
