Ravenlock

My name is Brigit, I am the High Mother of our newly formed nation we call the Theocracy of Ravenlock.
Ravenlock is a young land still. It was not three decades ago that the war between the Great Houses of the Twelve Provinces still raged at their heaviest. These aristocrats waged a civil war over petty things, scarcely do we recall the cause. Some say House Sung stole land of the Gairyus, others tell of the Gautamas being attacked by the Boeles. In any case two of the Great Houses started arguing and launched some assassination attempts at each other. Soon allied Houses started joining in and all hell broke loose. All twelve of the Great Houses were in a full fledged war by then. The once so stable, yet never much loved, Twelve Provinces burned and crumbled at the edges. Some saw it as an omen to the rebirth of Magna Frisia, the land of our forefathers which had been conquered and incorporated into the Twelve Provinces some five hundred years ago. One can hardly blame them for idealism. Having lived under aristocrat rule for five hundred years is bound to make you look for hope wherever you can.
The Great Houses of the Twelve Provinces raged at each other, besieged each other's cities and generally did what aristocracy does in war. Thankfully the Houses had grown weak in those degenerated times. Central government had ruled for five hundred years, the Great Houses believed themselves secure and revelled in their gold and luxury. The Decadence we sometimes call it. The Houses were not prepared for war, but drew themselves into it nevertheless. The powerful Houses fell first, the Sungs and Gairyus did not last long, the Boeles were soon after, the Gautamas, the Oranges, the Wassens, the Nassaus, the Coopers. All fell one by one. Only the lesser houses remained and they soon fell into ruin by general pressure of the population.
The population had had a peaceful, but not very free existence under the Twelve Provinces. They longed for the days of Magna Frisia, for the rule of legendary heroes such as king Redbad and his sons and fathers. The heroes of our elder gods, before the Provinces and their 'one true god' were forced upon them.
What most of the Great Houses did not know and only scant few of the population, was that the priesthood of the old gods still existed to keep alive the spirituality and customs of times past. The time was ripe for us to once again come into the open. We could inspire the people, offer them new hope and freedom and teach them once again the road to enlightenment and the ways of their ancestors.
