Out of a satellite dish, a grainy transmission was sent out. A man, behind a podium built out of scrap wood, held together by duct tape. He was dressed in a ragged, but elegant in its time, business suit.
"Greetings, I am Prime Minister Eric Coventry. I came here, to the area that became Demoia. It was not a nation-state in any sense of the word. It was ruled by tyrannical warlords. I recruited disaffected people from all over the land, uniting ethnic groups that had previously been at war, for the goal of democracy and freedom. When I was ready, I destroyed the warlords. We then wrote a constitution with a delegate representing each of the areas ruled by a warlord. Then, we held elections and I, surprisingly or not surprisingly, depending on how you look at it, I was elected by write-in ballot even though I was not seeking office."
He pressed a button on the podium, and it fell apart. An ancient computer hummed. Some text appeared at the bottom of the screen.
"We request economic aid. It is urgently needed. Although the government has instituted subsides for all food goods, and has introduced more efficient farming technology, we are still under-producing food. We have no cohesive military force to defend ourselves. We are sending this out with a satellite dish built out of scrap metal and salvaged electronic components, a computer from twenty years ago, and some improvised other equipment. Please wire any money you can to the account number at the bottom of the screen. Thank you, in advance, for whatever aid you render our Community."
