The Council of Tiamat

Beth Gellert

The Island, Portmeirion, The People's Commonwealth of Beth Gellert

Sky blue, crimson red, brilliant white, yellow, and pink towers, walls, and staircases marked The Island's centre. A well kept beach skirted the spectacle set on an artificial lake in Beth Gellert's otherwise modern-looking capital city.

A second grand institution was to be situated on The Island, beside the colourful governmental complex known as The Village. A continental Senate, somewhat different to the national Final Senate at The Village's heart, was to be situated in New Tiamat's oldest city.

Commonwealth Chief Consul comrade Chivo appeared on the balcony on a centuries old Local Senate building, defunct since the national population passed six figures.

"Comrades! People of New Tiamat! Not since before the appearance of capitalists on the continent has our land witnessed such a profound moment of co-operation.

"Already Beth Gellert has been joined in expressing her interest by the nations of Rolen, Quicherbichen, and Ugandi.

"Today is born the Council of New Tiamat, and we invite all of our dozen regional neighbours to post here in Portmeirion permanent ambassadors to the Council. For the betterment of life across the land, and for progress and diplomacy, let the Council unite us!"

(OOC: Yes, a regional senate intended to promote interaction between neighbours and to bring the region to global attention. Not an alliance, by any means- we are surrounded by cappies, after all! For what, if anything, is happening in the middle of the Indian Ocean, keep your eyes on this thread!)

This looks like a great idea, but we'll need to create some kind of constitution or something to either limit or expand the power of the Senate. Still, I and New Haverton both join in.

Interesting choice of name ... Tiamat after a dragon in Babylonian myth.

Beth Gellert is wholly pleased to see its northern neighbour, the second largest power on the continent, and one time enemy Haverton join the Council.

On the issue of granting and limiting of Council powers: The rather vague brief drafted by the Commonwealth Professional Civil Service and the Commonwealth Final Senate called for a forum allowing the free exchange of news information between regional states and peoples. Owing to two facts of some conflict, namely those of Beth Gellert's committed near pure communism, against the regional prominance of capitalism and party democracy, the brief did not call for much lawmaking or regulation to be imparted in the Council's makeup. After all, Beth Gellert would hold that the right to political evolution on the path to pure communism is no less important than the rights to life and liberty that would surely be constitutional. Such matters would likely lead to a break-up of the Council.

-CCC comrade Chivo.

OOC: Well, Babylonian influence certainly; the ancient (ish) Beth Gellens who pioneered the region were largely conspiracy nuts and romantics, hence their journey from Wales to the Indian Ocean, several centuries ago. We've a nuclear submarine class named Anunkai divided into squadrons Cronus, Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion, Themis, Phoebe, Metis, Prometheus, and Coeus, a carrier assault ship class Nibiru, a city named New Gibborim, and so forth. Tiamat's a lot of things, depending on where you look (or, in BG, who you ask). A god, an all-covering sea of salts, a dragon, or the gods name for earth.

OOC: Well that's odd... Of course, I named everything in both Havertons after states, cities, and other assorted things from the SE Unites States. Provinces of Georgia, Alabama, and Virginia. Cities like Atlanta, Birmingham, and Richmond. Rivers like Chatahoochee, Tombigbee, and James. Yeah, there's a lot of Southern influence here.

We have dispensed a group of delegates to she senate. Our nation applauds those who have come to discuss issues important to all of New Tiamat. We can invision a senate where nations can freely speak their views, without military repracussions, a place where the region can discuss lowering trade barriers. Our region must come together, to promote well-being and stability. For there once was a dream that is New Tiamat **Applause drowns out President Smedley's speech, to which he smiles and raises his hands as if in victory. The people of Danmarc seem ready to come to the table**

After a few days of disputes, the parliament of Ugandi has finally reached a consensus on the constitution of the delegation to the Council. At 2 PM local time tomorrow, the delegation will take off for Portmeirion from the Tarbatu International Airport.

In related news, the Emperor-in-exile has condemned Ugandi joining the council. He claimed that "cooperation is really submitting to everybody else's will, which we must not do, as they simply don't exist". It is rumored that the aging Emperor-in-exile is suffering from Alzheimer's and is rapidly losing his touch with reality (or what's left of it). Many have already questioned whether it is wise for Ugandi to "sustain such an anachronism".

"We're sorry to interrupt this program, but we have just received the news that the Emperor-in-exile is dead. All our sources have been pretty vague on details, but it is rumored that the old Emperor fell out of a window..."

"Q: So, professor Martinsen, what do you will happen now?
A: Well, the Emperor's death probably means the end of monarchy in Ugandi. As you know, the Emperor had no children, meaning that his succcessor will have to be appointed by the Council of Knights -- which hasn't gathered for centuries. Unless the archaic laws are changed, we're not a monarchy anymore. Which, frankly, I don't think is a such big loss..."

Since the brief Parmis Archipelago Incident there had been no significant diplomatic contact between Liberation and Portmeirion, so the arrival at the latter capital of a massive Airbus A-380 flying the former's diplomatic colours seemed at least newsworthy.

In truth it was part of a truly massive story- Nicobarese diplomats were being sent to join the Council of Tiamat, indicating ISAN's intention to make a new attempt on New Tiamation habitation. The Nicobarese were coming back, and few doubted that the communists would be less than elated to hear it. Even now surveyors were writing follow-up reports on territory west of Abydo, and ISN heavy cutters and commercial vessels were en route to the vast New Tiamatian badlands.

As the latest UN survery shows, Ugandi has become a flourishing nation of great equality. Not everything is rosy, however. Recently, our nation has become the target of an increasing number of attacks. These attacks have been conducted by pirates coming from the anarchic to the north. Some of them are the grandchildren of the Ugandian farmers who had moved there decades ago, others are locals. All the attacks have been extremely brutal in nature, with hostages taken and many others killed.

To ensure the safety of our people, the government of Ugandi has decided to take the battle to the enemies' turf. As a part of this plan, the Foreign Legion has been founded. Comprised solely of immigrants who would otherwise have had ńo way to serve in our armed forces, the Foreign Legion is going to be an elite battalion, always ready to serve their new homeland whereever they're needed the most. Ugandi being a member of the Council of Tiamat, the Legion will also be deployed to the hotspots inside and outside the region, when needed.
