“The two billionth Edölian citizen, a young girl, was born early today at 0412 hours to parents Harold and Qian Meizhen. The Impërator, Erik von Blätterschplitt, in a ceremony earlier today in front of the Scarlet Palace, designated April second a national holiday.
‘I hereby declare this day a day of celebration to commemorate the greatness of the Scarlet Empire. As your Impërator, I am proud to rule a nation filled with such a great diversity of people, languages and culture. I grew up, the Prince of the Kingdom of Edölia, watching my father govern his people. Since those days, Edölia has risen from a backwater nation no one had heard of or cared to know about to one of the world’s strongest nations. It is the spirit, the ingenuity and the courage of the Edölian people that has brought us to this point. And so, comrades, with the power vested in me by my birthright, I proclaim this day, April Second, the Day of Edölian Splendor.’
Edölia’s two billionth child is reported to be in good health. The parents have yet to name the girl and have said that they want an appropriate name to commemorate the significance of her birth.
However, not everyone is happy about this birth. Social critique and founder of the Edölian Stability Party, a political group advocating population control measures, Rona von Queth had this to say about the birth.
’Two billion citizens! Why are we celebrating this? I mean, why has this travesty been allowed to continue? Our population density is going out of control and our cities are sprawling in all directions. Blätterschplitt has a population of over 125 million people! That’s one hundred and twenty five million people packed together like sardines, breathing in the same air. Even though Edölians aren’t reproducing at a rate to sustain the population, our open-door immigration policies are keeping our population growing at an unbelievable rate. As much as I sympathize with the idea that all people should have the right to live where they choose, this is getting out of hand. It’s time to do something about this problem immediately before it gets any worse.’
Mr. von Queth is a back-bench member of the Edölian Imperial Parliament.”
