NationStates Jolt Archive

The Panel of Analysis and Data will commission the first of many statistical projects to provide numerical information on selected NS nations. These projects will report economic and political data which can then be analyzed for patterns.

To allow your nation to be included in these reports, simply post below saying so. We're hoping to get from between 40-50 nations. We're hoping these nations will be active [role] players on the international scene.

All data that will be used can be found in UN reports and the NS descriptions themselves. (This is not a replacement of Sunset's UN Rankings page. (http://www.pacifier.com/~cziller/unrankings.html) This is like a supplement, however.)

The reports will be periodically linked to in this thread.

OK you're all added. I don't know how "official" this will be. But, what it will do is be a comparitive study correlating things like government size, nation type, economy, population and freedom.

All of these are based on numbers used in the game itself; for example, 'freedom' is determined by the overall personal, political and economic views of your ruling style (anarchies have the most freedom, psychotic dictatorships the least, etc).

Economies are ranked not according to GDP but something like it- a multiplier times the population. Other figures relate this figure to those of other nations, the average, the max, the minimum, etc. There will be an "average nation," with the average population, nation type, tax rate, freedom, economic strength, etc, which could prove useful-- especially if I get a diverse sampling.

All these are calculated once (when it starts-- when enough people have signed up, 50) and then again later to show the changes over a period of time. It may or may not be a continously updating thing, depending. It may or may not include things like defense budgetary and population estimates. I think for the latter, I would require one more bit of info (tech level), and so I think that will be a specialized study later on.

So.

OOC: If you wish I can post the day-to-day version of the excel spreedsheet the rankings are on as well. If you do all the calculations on another sheet you can just copy and paste the whole thing in.

I'm not going to do the rankings for everyone from this project who asks however. Until I can get a way to automate the process down the listings are going to be semi-locked to nations I'm interested in.

I may do studies based on alliances as well, a la Sunset's UN ranking page, to do comparitive analysis of the major alliances. But, I need permission from those alliances.

I leave for Navy Boot Camp on April 19. It only lasts 8-10 weeks, but I don't know if I'll have internet access (for games) or time while in my technical school. I'll try to come back.

Sunset said he'd watch my account for that time, make sure it doesn't die (I'd rather like to keep that little date under my name). So...we'll have to wait and see.

Until the 19th, I'm willing to help out if I can (but have vacation the 5th-13th).
