World Cup 14 Signups

Commerce Heights
20-03-2004, 19:52
Commerce Heights will be starting and maintaining the wc14 signup thread.

So, here it is.

To join the WC14 qualifiers, post to this thread with words to the effect that you would like to participate. If you would like to bid to host the tournament, please state this. Note that nations that have not participated in at least one World Cup will not be considered for hosting.

Places will not be held for nations who do not post on their own (and this includes puppets). So if you want to enter a puppet, post in their name.

Please, to give all interested parties a chance to participate, only one puppet per nation (though any actual regulations regarding the entrance of puppets into the tournament will be determined by the WC14 hosts).

98 already and we're not quite halfway through WC13 qualifying...looks like the hosting bids will need to be able to accommodate A LOT of nations...

WELL then...

It seems that everyone who signs up after 98 is on a "tentative-signup" -- depending on who hosts (and what qualifying procedure they go with), they may or may not be in the World Cup.

I suggest they be listed in a seperate list, as whether or not they're in is not yet concrete as there is no standard World Cup setup (for qualifying, that is.).

98 already and we're not quite halfway through WC13 qualifying...looks like the hosting bids will need to be able to accommodate A LOT of nations...

With all the hosting applications, maybe the qualifiers could be co run by say 4 hosts and the finals run by 1 or 2 :) then we could run qualifying in different regions and accomodate some 200 entrants!

What is meant by this is that we would have to send 30 scores each, with each score being received by two nations. Thus 30x2=60.

CH, Spaam, TBF: Basically, you're all right

1. With the exception of hosts for WC13, all the hosting bids were done in the sign up threads - so a precedent was set.

2. It is much easier and cleaner if we leave the sign-up thread for sign-ups, and just post links for hosting bids.

3. We are changing.

TBF - no need to delete or modify your post.

Everybody - See Commerce Heights' post. If you want to host, just do a simple post in the sign-up thread that says "I wanna host" (or whatever). If you want to elaborate (which IS encouraged) about your hosting bid, give us a link to a thread where you post all that stuff.

Lastly - if there are more comments, suggestions, ideas on this issue - put 'em in the Discussion thread, please.

Attn: Possible hosts of WCXIV

Dear Hosts,

It has come to my attention that most hosts are willing to cut off the teams at 96 teams. However, I would like you to increase the number of qualifying teams. At this moment, One Red Dot stands at 97. I am very sure that you would not want a team with such experience and calibre to miss out on what is most probably the most popular sport in NationStates, amounting to more than 400 teams - existant and non-existant - and dating back to more than 50 years.

Again, I hope that you increase the number of qualifiers, so as to, not only let my country play, but also rope in more talent all over the world.

Thank you for your attention.

Alan Eriksson, chief of the BeSFA and his vice Alan Belmoresson talked about the current situation in BeS and the WCC.
Eriksson: So, we can still participate, despite the change of government?
Belmoresson: We were a semi-autonomous region, and we are it still, only under another government. We can still participate and we will still participate.
Eriksson: There is this limit: Only one semi-automous region and one main nation...
Belmoresson: It doesn't affect us. There is no second rejistanian region with this status in the world cup. I am merely worried about this. (Belmoresson shows Eriksson the puppet rule) That will affect us.
Eriksson: What do you propose.
Belmoresson: Send a letter to the WCC and confirm that we still participate. If they decide to throw us out, it isn't in our influence.

OOC: Yes, it is now a rejis puppet, but since I don't have any other puppets in WC14, I let BeS in the sign-up and let the puppet-rule eliminate it.

The Bureaucratic Tribune
BUREAUCRATIC STATES FA & KINGSFORD FA PRESS RELEASE

Oglethorpia and Kingsford are proud to be selected by the World Cup Commitee as hosts of the 14th iteration of the World Cup. The two regional neighbors are fully committed to ensuring that the Cup will run as smoothly as possible, having taken every consideration. The Bureaucratic States [of Oglethorpia] and the Holy Republic [of Kingsford] are pleased to bring the Cup to the Emerald Heights for the first time in the region's history.

World Cup 14 in Oglethorpia & Kingsford will mark the first time the Cup proper will have came to Oglethorpia in twenty-four years -- and thirty-two to Kingsford, though the two nations were not neighbors in the pre-WC12 days.

The road to World Cup 14 will begin with the selection of a corporate sponsor -- a tradition which seemed to die out following the conclusion of World Cup 7. Oglethorpia and Kingsford will make the selection jointly, based on the quality of the sponsor's bid.**

Once again, Oglethorpia and Kingsford look forward to running a prosperous World Cup 14.

-- Mel Green, President of the Bureaucratic States Football Association
-- John Lavalais, President of the Kingsford Football Association

---

The following is an OOC guideline for the above corporate sponsor idea.

**Note -- Kingsford's player and I have agreed to bring the corporate sponsor aspect back to the World Cup. For your corporation to be considered as official host of World Cup 14, you must meet the following requirements:

A) Your corporation must be respectable (and serious.) Nothing silly or innuendo-ized.
B) You must provide a company jingle that shall be used when scores are posted (and official World Cup posts are made during the duration of WC14).
C) [Optional] -- you may also write a lengthier advertisement that will appear less often than a jingle.***

An example of this is the Bureaucratic States' own Amalgamated Industries' jingle that goes "Cars for the family to drive around - and bombs to blow things into the ground."

Another example might be the old Consolidated Industries jingle (another Oglethorpian company) that promoted evisceratomatoes and went "Don't be late, they're really great, evisceratomatoes demand to be ate."

It is your choice as to whether or not the jingle/theme song promotes a single item or is for the company as a whole -- the two examples being the latter and the former, respectively.

If it is a jingle for the corporation as a whole, it should represent the kind of business that corporation does -- Amalgamated Industries' theme song illustrating that they deal in both military hardware and domestic stuffs. It should be catchy and slightly humorous, but definitely not absurd.

***Note -- The jingle or theme song will appear with the World Cup 14 topic and the subsequent posting of scores -- while an optional lengthier commercial or other advertisement will appear less often.

If you're willing to take part, go ahead and post a submission here.

COMMERCIAL BREAK

A wide shot of a vacant pitch is shown at night with two similarly looking men walking across it. A light mist gently floats above the dewline as both men, revealed to be Alex and Sandro Cannon thanks to the closer camera shot, playfully pass the ball between each other. All of a sudden, the massive light towers switch on and five dark figures emerge from the distance. They get closer and can only be identified as Gilmeecian zombies, clad in their full football kits. The camera switches to the bleachers, as Gilmeecian President-in-Exile Louis Gilsterson stands alone in the fog, his dark overcoat flapping in the wind.

President Louis Gilsterson: Games on, boys!

The zombies storm onto the pitch and start shoving the Cannon twins around. One of the zombies knock the ball out of a stunned Sandro Cannon's hands and begin dribbling it between his feet.

President Louis Gilsterson: If you want to make it out of here alive, you'll have to beat us at a game of football. First Goal Wins!

The massive zombies pass the ball around and start running up the field. Alex Cannon goes in to try to take the ball away from one of the zombiesm, but is swatted away like a fly. That zombie passes the ball to another zombie who takes a shot but puts it off the crossbar.

Sandro Cannon: I got an idea!

Sandro Cannon sprints outside the pitch to where a bright beam of light, as if by divine intervention, is shining onto two Hareida Gold beers. Cannon picks them up and tosses one to Alex Cannon.

Sandro Cannon: Cheers!

Both of them raise the bottles and take a sip of that crisp, cool, refreshing Hareida Gold. As they lower their bottles, "A Little Less Conversation," by Elvis Presley and JXL begins to play.

Alex Cannon: Now that's a smooth sippin' brew!

Sandro Cannon: Made only with the finest hops, malt and barley in Brazillico!

Alex and Sandro storm back onto the pitch after being rejuvenated from their sip of Hareida Gold. A zombie collects the ball in the box and prepares to shoot. At that very instant, Alex Cannon flies into the screen, jumps on the zombie's back and shatters the beer bottle over the zombie's head in a Todd Bertuzzi fashion. Alex then collects the ball and back heels it to Sandro. Sandro recieves the pass and blows past a zombie, putting it between the stunned undead guy's legs. Another zombie then slides into the screen trying to challenge Sandro, but he passes it back up to Alex. Alex finds himself alone with the keeper and uncorks a wicked shot, hitting the zombie goalkeeper right in the face, knocking his head off and scoring the winning goal.

President Louis Gilsterson: Itsa goal!

The music cuts as Alex and Sandro tap hands as they slowly make their way towards Louis Gilsterson towards the bleachers.

President Louis Gilsterson: You know about the whole killing you thing... That was just a figure of speech.

Alex Cannon: Hey Louis. Catch.

Sandro Cannon pulls out a cooler neatly tucked away underneath the first row of seats and Alex Cannon opens it up and tosses a Harieda Gold towards Louis Gilsterson. The Cannon twins takes one for themselves and meet up with Mr. Gilsterson halfway up the bleachers.

All: Cheers to Hareida Gold!

The three men tap glasses and take a sip of their beers. "A Little Less Conversation" begins to play again, and out of nowhere, the bikini-clad all female team from DeLaShaw appears and everyone, the Cannon Twins, Louis Gilsterson and the DeLaShaw twins begin dancing around.

Voice-Over: It's bold, it's cold, it's Hareida Gold! Hareida Breweries are a proud sponsor of international football, the Brazillican national side and the Harmony Cup. Doing football the right way, the Brazillican way!

Your corporation must be respectable (and serious.) Nothing silly or innuendo-ized.

I can't speak for others, but this is what's stopping me. EVERYTHING in SN38 is either silly, innuendo, or both. I did "apply" as a sponsor the last time we did sponsors...and, of course, it was both silly and innuendone.

(i really tried to resist writing "innuendone" or "inuendid"...and failed) :?

Perhaps I should be more clear...

Silly would be perfectly acceptable. Sexual innuendo of an inappropriate sort probably wouldn't be some we'd want for a sponsor, but humor = good. The more the better.

Sorry for any confusion or trying to take away any creativity you may be working with -- what I basically mean by that is, even if your company is silly, it should still appear to people as being a respectable corporation.

I apologize again for any confusion.

Rejistania's puppet Abysmalistan has a company called 'Crash Cheap Airways.' That would be a fine sponsor, were it actually submitted.

Conversely, 'Mick's House Of Porn' would not be very likely to be selected as WC14 sponsor.

Hopefully those two examples clear things up.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled whatever to bring you an important World Cup 14 message.

For the 94 participants of World Cup 13 that are no longer in World Cup 13 and wish to get a move on World Cup 14 RPing, Oglethorpia and Kingsford have seen it fit to start a Pre-World Cup 14 RP Thread. (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3078738#3078738)

The jist of the thread is for those who are anxious to be RPing again -- the synopsis of it's purpose is as follows.

Go ahead and post the lead-in RPs to World Cup 14 here -- be it player changes or squad changes, or anything else you can think of. I bet you're all ready to get RPing again with World Cup 13 in it's last days. We know full well 94 of the 102 participants are no longer in the Cup, and are ready to get movin' on the next World Cup to be held in the Emerald Heights.

Once again, the link is here. (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3078751#3078751)

The thread will become defunct following the conclusion of World Cup 13 -- when group draws are posted in a new World Cup 14 RP thread. In the meantime, you can use the above links to go to the Pre-World Cup 14 RP thread.

Finally, an important message detailing the evils of deleting double posts. (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3078751#3078751)

We now return you to your regularly scheduled whatever.

Unfortunately, World Cup 14 is full.

Unless some signed up nations 'cease-to-exist' it is unlikely you will make your way into World Cup 14.

Because of this, your best bet of competing on the international scene is to wait for the World Cup 15 signups.

Voiceover: Has this ever happened to you?

Mom: What would you like for lunch, Junior?

Junior: How ‘bout making fried chicken bones, Mom?

Mom: Oh, I would, dear, but that’d kill the chicken. And you know how your father loves the chicken. It’s like a dog to him.

Junior: Darn.

Chicken: Cluck cluck!

Voiceover: Well, it doesn’t have to happen any more! Because now there’s an easy-to-use product that will take the bones right out of that chicken—without killing it!

Junior: Hey, look! Whats’ that on the kitchen shelf?

Mom: Why, it’s the ChicA-Live Electric Chicken Deboner. I’d forgotten we had that.

Junior: Let’s try it out!

Mom: All right. Let’s see, we just insert this organe tube into the chicken’s beak…

Chicken: (muffled clucking)

Mom: Then we just press the big red button.

Junior: Can I do it?

Mom: Why not?

Chicken: (muffled shriek)

Junior: Wow! That’s cool!

Mom: I’ve never seen such an efficient chicken deboning—and it did it without even killing the chicken!

Chicken: Gurgle.

Junior: But did it hurt the chicken? I heard it make a loud noise as its bones were sucked out.

Mom: No, I don’t think so. It sounded to me like a screech of orgasmic pleasure.

Junior: Wow!

Voiceover: ChicA-Live… the most efficient electric tool for deboning a chicken without killing it. Available in most fine stores for under twenty lemmings. Not to be used on non-chicken animals or humans.

To: Registered owners of Eclectic Lemming Corporation Freez-A-Matic Instant LemmingFreezer model 1071 and 1072.

April 24, 20—

Dear Mr or Ms productholder,

It is with regret that we must discontinue and recall the extremely useful and efficient Instant LemmingFreezer effective immediately. Owners of the product are asked to bring their LemmingFreezer to the retailer from which they purchased it, to receive a full refund.

While Eclectic Lemming Corporation admits no wrongdoing in the development or marketing of this wonderful product, we do regret that some users have been careless with the device, and that injuries may have resulted from users’ carelessness. While we at ELC do not wish to point fingers or make accusations, it cannot be missed that the well-publicized accidents involving the LemmingFreezer all occurred several days after Lemmitanian Television Company aired an episode of Stargate: Enterprise in which Captain Jack Archer had himself instantaneously cryogenically frozen in order to avert the Klinga’uld threat. It also cnnot be missed that all of the injured parties were children small enough to fit inside the freezing receptacle of the LemmingFreezer, and also of an age impressionable enough to have tried emulating their favorite TV hero.

Therefore, while the LemmingFreezer is, unfortunately, being taken off the market before government sanctions and fines can be imposed, Eclectic Lemming Corporation will not be withdrawing its bid to sponsor the 14th World Cup of football.

Thank you,

Plem Lemberbler
ELC Corporate Counsel

Squornshelous Motor Vehicles, the dominant car manufacurer in Squornshelous, would love to sponsor World Cup 14. Squornshelous, I must add, is ranked higher than 1,000th in the world for Automobile Manufacture, so this is a really huge company. As an added bonus, if selected to sponsor this competition, SMV will award the entire rostor of the winning team with their choice of any SMV vehicle, from the race inspired R-16 supercar (600 horsepower, top speed 250 mph) to the rugged T-20 SUV (similar to a Hummer).

Jingle:
A company with Diversity, Power and Style, SMV; it really is the perfect car.

Re: sponsorship application

Stout Lout wishes to apply to be an official sponsor of World Cup 14.

Stout Lout is the official ale of overweight pissed-off sports fans. Available throughout Tanah Burung, the ale hopes to make a push into international markets in this Cup, held in two of our closest neighbours.

Here are some of our spot ads. We qwould be thrilled at the chance to incorporate players from other nations in future advertisements.

An enormously obese man is sprawled across the couch, watching a football match. Two women in bikinis dance in, carrying trays of beer, and hand him a glass. he takes a drink, clutches his heart, and falls to the ground. As he expires, he chokes out the words: "I regret nothing!"

Voice-over: Fat Lout. The tastiest way to go.

An even fatter man is sitting in the stands, watching Tanah Burung v Snub Nose 38.
Fat man (shouting at the players): You call that a tackle? You're a bum!
Crocodiles defender Rashid Nazir: Hey, you want me to come up there and shut you up?
Fat man: Yer a waste of a uniform! I've got half a mind to throw my rotten vegetables at you instead of the Hooligans!
Nazir climbs into the stands, looking angry. A beer-seller intercepts him, and hands both him and the fat man large mugs of beer. They clink glasses. On the pitch, Tanah Burung scores.

Dissolve to jingle:
Stout Lout, Stout Lout,
Genetically engineered!
Stout Lout, Stout Lout,
Come on fans, get beered!

Thirteen-year old boy: Holy Wonderteam! The World Cup is coming!
Boy's father: Yes, and everyone knows football means beer! Beer and cursing!
Boy: Hurrah! What sort of beer?
Father: Why, Stout Lout of course! It contains high-protein meat extracts, calcium to promote bone density, and eight of the ten recommended vegetables additives.
Boy: Is ketchup a vegetable?
Father: Don't question me.

Dissolve to jingle:
Stout Lout, Stout Lout,
The healthiest of ales,
Stout Lout, Stout Lout,
You'll grow as big as whales.

It having come to the attention of several important bigwigs at Eclectic Lemming Corporation that several of the leading bidders to sponsor the fourteenth World Cup of football are breweries, it seems that introducing a competing product might help ELC's own bid. Therefore it is with immense pride that we unveil ELC's premiere advertisement for beer.

Voiceover: Hey there, Mr. or Ms. International football fanatic. What do you like more than anything in the world? Would you say 'beer?' If so, have we got a product for you! Let's listen in as joey and Biff extoll the virtues of LemaChic Pilsner-- the only pilsner in the world brewed with 100% genuine chicken-flavored lemming!

Joey: Yo, biff! What you drinkin' there, man?

Biff: Man, this is LemaChic Pilsner.

Joey: LemaChic Pilsner? What's that?

Biff: It's a new beer from Eclectic Lemming Corporation.

Joey: ELC? The makers of the ChicA-live Chicken Deboner? I didn't know they made beer. What's it like?

Biff: Here, have a swig.

Joey: Mmm... Oh, Bejeezus! It tastes just like chicken!

Biff: Carbonated, fermented chicken!

Joey: That's incredible! Gimme that bottle, man!

Biff: No way, get your own!

Joey: Gimme! Gimme!

Biff: Ack! Thpth!

Voiceover: LemaChic Pilsner. The beer so good it turns friends against one another. Make sure you have plenty on hand or your guests may turn violent.
The Master Cooper
27-04-2004, 14:27
We are in the Master Cooper for re-opening night after being closed for a substantial amount of time for refurbishment...

Roy: "So what have they done in here? It looks the same as it did before."

Gary: "It is. Apart from that they've painted the walls a slightly different shade of beige."

Rich: "That's all they've done in three months?!?!?"

Payney: "Looks like it."

Gary: "No, they've put some new light fittings up."

Chris: "Yeah, that'll've taken a good... oooh, maybe two hours?"

Roy: "Waste of time if you ask me."

*Mike the Barman comes over*

Mike the Barman: "Hello there lads, what do you think of the makeover we've given the place?"

Roy: "Aw, it's really good, I like it."

Mike the Barman: "Good, I'm glad it was worth the effort, then. Anyway, I've been reading the paper, and I came across this in the sports section..."

Rich: "You're not entering us for that World Cup again, are you?"

Mike the Barman: "Well, no. Last time was supposed to be a bit of a holiday, even if some of you did take it a bit seriously, and we managed a few draws. But no, we're not entering again. But it is to do with the World Cup..."

Rich: "Oh, here we go..."

Mike the Barman: "Well what it is is that they're looking for a corporate sponsor, and I was thinking, what if it could be us?"

*A couple of the drinkers spit out their drinks in failing to hold back they're laughter*

Roy: "Heh, that's a good one, Mike!"

Mike the Barman: "No, I'm serious! Think about it, this time we'd be certain of going to the World Cup, and we wouldn't even have to try to play!"

Rich: "It isn't going to happen, boss. Think of how much money we'd need. These are all massive corporations going in for this, not little pubs like us."

Mike the Barman: "Ah now come on, think of all the customers we'd have! The money we'd make from people coming here from around the world would more than make up for it!"

Roy: "But where would they all go?"

Chris: "It's packed in here most nights of the week without it being an international tourist attraction."

Mike the Barman: "Ah now come on, I've even come up with a slogan!"

Payney: "Go on..."

Mike the Barman: "The Master Cooper - It's really super!"

Roy: "Nice and simple, eh!"

Mike the Barman: "You like it?"

Rich: "Well, it's OK, I suppose. But it says there that you need an advert as well. What you gonna do about that then?"

Mike the Barman: "I thought that they could just come in and film pieces of conversations people have in here. The friendly atmosphere and positive comments you always give about the place sell themselves, really. So anyway, I'll go for it, then!"

Roy: "OK, then. But you aint got a hope in hell of pulling it off!"

Mike the Barman: "We'll see about that!"

*Mike the Barman leaves to serve some other customers*

Rich: "He's got no chance."

Gary: "Especially if he's trying to sell this beered-down water to the world."

Payney: "Beered-down water?

Gary: "Yeah. Like watered-down beer, only there's more water in it than there is beer."

Payney: "Oh. Stop trying to be funny, Gary. You know it doesn't work."

Gary: "Sorry."

...and so we leave the Master Cooper, potential (though highly unlikely) corporate sponsor of World Cup 14.

The Master Cooper
29-04-2004, 23:01
Mike the Barman: "I've been working on it!"

Geoff: "On what?"

Mike the Barman: "Our slogan. For this corporate sponsor business."

Mick: "You're not still doing that, are you?"

Mike the Barman: "Of course I am. Only 'The Master Cooper - it's really super' sounds a bit... well... shit. So anyway, I've got a new one... 'Win, draw or lose, we're the place for booze.'"

Mick: "Well, it's an improvement, but we still think you're mad."

Mike the Barman: "You won't put me off. Nothing will."

*At this point, a random drunk walks through the front door looking for the exit.*
