A Brief History of Haaregradia(formerly known as A Long, Boring History of Haaregradia)

Early History:

In 1779 the first Haaregradian Emperor, Feon led numerous successful military campaigns, eventually conquering all of what is now Haaregradia, as well as much of Silberklinge and Todeskopf. This empire lasted until 1948, when a mixture of Republican/Nationalists, Democrats and Communists succeeded in overthrowing the Emperor, Darius.

Civil War:

After the Emperor Darius was overthrown the factions began fighting amongst themselves. The Nationalists fought to establish a fascist state under their leader, Erik Adolfson. The Democrats hoped to establish a democratic state with a free market; the Communists, under Olaf Lipinski eventually succeeded in gaining control over the central state, Haaregrad.
The Nationalists retreated to Todeskopf and set up their Fascist state there, however they quickly found themselves promoting the idea of a Kaiser to act as a figure head, their dreams of a Republic died quickly. The Democrats managed to set up a state in Dill Row, taking with them the most liberal Republicans as well as many Democratic Socialists. The United Socialist States of Soviet Haaregrad was established in 1955 when the Communists had official quieted the other factions, or forced them away.

Communist Era:

Olaf was a good leader, if not slightly oppressive. Under his reign Gulag Island, the nation's primary prison complex was established. While not as awful as the Siberian hells it were named after, Gulag Island was not friendly. Olaf set up a puppet government in a part of the former Haaregradian Empire now known as Metropolis Industries(formerly South Haaregrad). Olaf ruled up until 1974 when, in ill health, the Communist Party chose Vladimir Borovski as his replacement. Two weeks later Mr. Lipinski was dead and Borovski began making some of the most fundemental changes Soviet Haaregrad had ever seen.

The Borovski Era:

Borovski's first changes were to re-legalize opposition parties, feeling now was the time for change. Additionally he set up his first Five-Year Plan, which would ready the state for democracy. The state progressed through liberal Communism until the election which the Communists won, with 55% of the vote, between 6 parties. During his second term a crisis erupted in Metropolis Industries as the Stalinist dictator became so awful that Soviet Haaregrad felt required to intervene. The Haaregradians quickly gave support to the freedom fighters and overthrew the dictator. Three months later a referendium was held and the nation voted to join Soviet Haaregrad, thus, in 1989 the Pan-Haaregradian Council was borne.

The Pan-Haaregradian Council Gains Power:

Leading up to the first elections for Supreme Councilor Mr. Borovski declined to run for a second term as premier of Soviet Haaregrad. This signalled to almost everyone that he would be running for Supreme Councilor. He hopped parties, to the Socialist Party and as expected became the first Supreme Councilor of Haaregradia. In 1992 Dill Row asked to join the Council. During his second term as Supreme Councilor he changed the name of his position to President, feeling it far less pompous, additionally the armed forces were readied for the future. Lastly the nation changed from three closely tied nations, Soviet Haaregrad, Dill Row and Metropolis Industries into the Federated Socialist Republics of Haaregradia. The three member states are the Federal Socialist Republic of Soviet Haaregrad, the Soviet Socialist Republic of Metropolis Industries and the Soviet Socialist Republic of Dill Row.

After Borovski:

In 2000 Mr. Borovski said he would not be running for re-election. Later that year his former Vice President, Drix Van Durev won the election, keeping the Socialists in power, narrowly defeating the Republicans. He was not nearly as popular as his opponent and when 2008 Vladimir Lenin III of the Communist party defected to the Socialists there was a serious split in support. By the time the 2012 election was called Mr. Lenin had handily taken over the party, which was confirmed in the primaries. The Socialists yet again won power, due in no doubt to Mr. Lenin's ideas of a continuing improvment for the people. Now in 2020 Mr. Lenin is bravely leading a nation with a combined population of over 4 billion into th future.
