The Election for the 11th-term President and Vice-President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) is scheduled for March 20, 2004; the official campaigning period is from 07:00 to 22:00 (local time) every day from February 21, 2004 to March 19, 2004. However campaign activities have been going on for over a year. A consultative referendum will take place on the same day.

The candidates for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, backed by the Pan-Green Coalition, will be incumbents Chen Shui-bian (chair of the party) as presidential candidate and Annette Lu as vice-presidential candidate. The opposition Pan-Blue Coalition will run a combined ticket: Kuomintang chair Lien Chan as the presidential candidate, and People First Party chair James Soong as the vice-presidential candidate.

----------------------------------------------------

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is a political party in the Republic of China on Taiwan which has traditionally been associated with Taiwan independence although it has moderated its stance as it has gained power. It was founded in 1986, but was technically illegal until 1991.
The party is composed of a number of factions such as the New Tide faction, the Formosa faction, the Justice faction. The DPP is a member of Liberal International, and represents Taiwan in the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation.

It is usually associated with the pan-green coalition. Its Chairman is current President of the Republic of China, Chen Shui-bian.

-----------------------------------------

The Kuomintang or Nationalist Party (KMT; Traditional Chinese: 中國國民黨 Hanyu Pinyin: Zhōnggúo Gúomíndǎng, literally the National People's Party of China), is a political party currently active in the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan. Together with the People First Party, it forms what is popularly known as the pan-blue coalition, favoring Chinese reunification, in opposition to the pan-green coalition, favoring Taiwan independence.

Organized shortly after the Xinhai Revolution, which overthrew the Qing Dynasty in China, the KMT fought the Beiyang warlords and the Communist Party of China for control of the country before its retreat to Taiwan in 1949. There, it remained the only legal party on Taiwan until 1991, and until the ROC presidential election, 2000, the ruling party of the ROC. Thus the ROC was once referred to synonymously with the KMT and known simply as "Nationalist China" after its ruling party.

The KMT is currently headed by Lien Chan.

--------------------------------------------

Both parties have begun official campaigns today, with heavy TV coverage and a tour of the nation.

Jorge Korenoff jotted down a quick note and sent it to party headquarters.

Pleasant greetings to you, on this, the eve of your election. May the party who best supports your nations interests triumph. It is my duty as an ambassador to take soundings as to what each party views their relationship with Roania to be. What are the issues that our nations need to work through?

What ways may we work that would ensure our nations mutually prosper?

<=======>

"What happens if both parties send back an insulting note?" An aide asked him later that day.

"There is a curse in the Orient, Bruno. It is 'may you live in interesting times'. Should we be insulted by both parties, there will be very interesting times...

OOC: You know, that makes it difficult to decide who to vote for. I support Sino, so I'd vote for the Kuomintang... but on the other hand, I like the DPP's policies. And if you do formally secede, and he invades, I could scoop up half of your outlying islands... it's tough.

What about Xiaguo's Chinese Confederate party, just another name of United China Party. lol.
Confederate Party=Chinese Unity, Human Rights, Political Rights, and Pro-Unions. Also, not as radical as United China Party. Also lot of Flag waving, and cussing out their enemies.

Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian and Vice-President Annette Lu have been shot at a rally only hours before the country goes to the polls.
It is not clear how many shots were fired in the southern city of Tainan but Mr Chen was hit in the stomach and Ms Lu in her right knee.

Both were taken to hospital where they are said to be in stable condition. Officials said Mr Chen had urged people to stay calm and pledged that the elections would go ahead as planned. But both the governing and opposition parties announced that they were suspending their campaigns.

Gentlemen, to be honest and fair, that SOB did it to himself. He paid the gunmen to shoot him and his whore only at non-lethal parts. He gets away with moderate injury, and boost of support for his party, right at the last minute. That terrorist!

I have to say, Chen's quick learner, following al Queda's example recently in Madrid. Last minute voter sympathy drive, a real cheap shot. The ROCNSB (Republic of China National Security Bureau) has ruled out any Mainland involvement.

Have think, men. Why some puny pistols? Why did they only aimed for non-lethal parts and why did he survive?

What terrorist? Let's say it was the PLA sniper who did their job to kill Chen, but failed.

WTF? It was pistols from multiple directions. If I was the "sniper", I would have packed a Dragunov SVD (7.62x51mm) with self-shrapnelling HE (as seen in Tiananmen). That'll split that SOB's head to bits.

The point is, that bastard did it to himself (professionally, so he survives with a scratch to his abdomen) and cause great voter sympathy. And now he's elected.

Have a think, gentlemen. His vehicle was surrounded closely by security escorts on motocycles, why didn't they catch the assassins? Considering that pistols have a 50m max range and 30m for optimal accuracy? And why didn't they aim for the heads?

Even the KMT blames that he orchestrated the shootings just for the votes.

President Chen Shui-bian of Taiwan was declared to have won a second term by a razor-thin margin today, but the opposition Nationalist Party called for the election to be annulled and suggested that the president might have staged an 11th-hour assassination attempt to get votes.

In calling for a court-supervised recount and promising a separate lawsuit to have the entire election annulled, Mr. Lien cited a large number of invalid ballots and uncertainty about what happened on Friday afternoon when President Chen was shot while riding in a motorcade through his hometown, Tainan, in southern Taiwan. He suggested that the shooting might have swayed voters toward Mr. Chen.

"The slim gap has been achieved under layer upon layer of suspicion," Mr. Lien told a teary-eyed crowd of supporters. "It is not a fair election. Prepare to annul the election."

Mr. Chen's top aides said that the assassination attempt was real and that there was no evidence of fraud in the vote and no need for a recount.

Zeke's Anchorage
Atop Zeke's Peak, Patoxia

The gambling hall at Zeke's Anchorage was tense, men paced back an forth, smoke from various pipes and cigars seemly added to the already murky atmosphere. People stared down at their tickets, the betting on the Taiwanese election was tight and the election itself was even tighter. The suspense was starting to get to some of the gamblers, as they were visibly sweating, creating an even more noxious smell that filled the room. All of a sudden the final results of the Taiwanese elections flashed on the monitor:

[code:1:6cf518415c]FINAL TAIWAN POLL RESULTS
Chen Shui-bian: 6,471,970 (50.11%)
Lien Chan: 6,442,452 (49.89%)
337,297 invalid ballots
Turnout: 80.28%[/code:1:6cf518415c]

Cries of joy, shock, and anger mixed together becoming a deafening roar, filling all of Zeke's Anchorage. Some were cheering and dancing, others were tossing beer mugs and cursing. To an outsider it would have appeared to be a major riot, however to those familiar with the goings on at Zeke's Anchorage it wouldn't appear to be all that out of the ordinary.

"YEEEEEHHHAAAAWWWW!!!!!!!!!", shouted Brian Wescott, leader of The Cobras, above all the rest, "We're f***ing rich, boys!" Upon hearing this a group of men wearing the Cobras emblem started cheering and pumping their fists in the air.

---------------------------------------------

A few hours later:

"Eh! Yah know what I 'erd?", one gambler who had bet on the Kuomintang said to another at the bar drowning their sorrows away, "I 'erd dat the cobras workerd with same damned Tai-chenk gamling ring to wound dat guy they gambled on."

"Really?", the other man asked, "I would think that Wescott would be less crass than that, I mean intervening in world affairs just to get some extra cash..."

"I just 'erd it!", the other man announced, "I dunno eff eet's true er not, 'uld bee jest a danged rumor! bot ferm wot I seez ov 'em, aye tink e might ov dunne it!"

OOC:

"Say old chap, do you know what I have just heard?", one gambler who had bet on the Kuomintang said to another at the bar drowning their sorrows away, "I have heard that The Cobras worked with a Taiwanese gang to deliver a non-lethal wound to president Chen Shui-ban, in order to throw the election their way"

"Really?", the other man asked, "I would think that Wescott would be less crass than that, I mean intervening in world affairs just to get some extra cash..."

"I have just recently heard about it.", the other man announced, "I have no idea if it is true or not, it could be just another rumour. However, from what I have seen of Wescott, I would not be shocked if it was true."

The Cobras are big in the organized crime scene of Patoxia. if I remember right, RL Taiwanese officials are looking into illegal gambling rings for possible suspects for Chen's shooter, too. If in this RP a gambling ring is responsible they would probably have some link to it, however like the IC said, it's just a rumour flying around.

The election results are from RL Taiwan's Central Election Commission.
