I have started this log for a reason. After all, what use is cracking into a secure network if nobody knows you've done it?

This is a secure connection. You cannot track me. I will leave no logs behind. When I have finished, perhaps I will return this server to its rightful owners. Perhaps not.

I have decided to make an attempt on Khrrck's secure network. Nobody has yet made his way in; there's some vicious software patrolling it.

However, a colleague of mine has given me a vital clue. He has noticed that Khrrck's network regularly sends out ferrets to download data on deep-space mapping and spatial mathematics. He doesn't know why.

I can take advantage of this.

I have hacked a online directory of deep-space maps. When the Khrrck ferret downloads it, my program will go along with it.

Hopefully, it will be able to open a hole from the inside.

Oh, and for those of you who haven't been keeping up with the terminology, a ferret is a autonomous search program, usually a extremely complex one.

Ah, the ferret's coming now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's taken the bait. The hole's forming now. I'll connect to it-
My God, this is weird.
The protocol on this network is damn strange. My Interface is barely making sense of it. Here, let me run a interpreter program...
Damnit, this is a unknown character set! I'll have to analyze it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

With the help of the big GDCA supercomputer, I've managed to analyze the character set. It took about four hours; quite long.

Just let me erase my tracks...

Okay. The character set seems to have two parts. A "shorthand" of ideograms, for commonly-used words and a few phrases, and a phonetic alphabet for everything else. I've never seen anything like it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm back in the network. First order of buisness; more enterances. It's only a matter of time before the security software finds the hole I'm using.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Okay, I think I'm set. Time to explore.

There's a lot of traffic. I've captured a few snatches, but none of it makes sense. I'll try to find a file server.

Here, this looks central. Let me try and connect.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aha! I've found a translation routine. It's for converting English into the Khrrck language, but I think I can reverse it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Okay. As far as I can tell, this server is owned by the diplomatic forces of Khrrck. The dispatch list is quite a interesting read. It's in code, but it's a fairly weak 64-bit key.
[code:1:833d21f79c]Morth Steelfang, Azrak Copperclaw, Ss'tek Halfjaw: Xertania
(emergency situation handling)

Kazarak Steelfang, Kaharka Copperclaw, Zak'mar Ironscale: Effrenata
(purchasing aircraft)

********** ************cale K********** ***********: RomeW
(diplomacy)

***************** ************* ************** **********

******* ************** *******...[/code:1:833d21f79c]
Damn! Only the first few lines are 64-bit. The rest is something else. I can't crack it with the resources I've got. I'll look elsewhere.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My God. These guys aren't human.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Okay. This server is labeled... "Mages' Guild Secure Blueprints."
What's up with that? I'll find out.

Hrmm. Password prompt. I'll run a cracker...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gods, that took a while. Dictionary didn't work, so I had to resort to brute-force cracking. "fLhre8*4j _43!9 {3k", indeed.
Well, I'm in. Let's see. This directory... "Mages' Guild." Let me see.
Lots of files. "Collectors", "Comm", "Maps", "Defense Matrix"... I'll look at Defense Matrix.
Ho-hum. More 64-bit encryption.
[code:1:833d21f79c]...********* regular hovercraft patr*******...
...********hainguns mounted on********...
...***********oot thick steel do************...
...******************thstand nuc*********...
...*******esigned*****y Arak Ironsc***.[/code:1:833d21f79c]
Damn! More of that unbreakable encryption. The above is all I can extract from it. It's odd the way it's applied so patchily.
"Maps" is totally incomprehensible. "Collectors" is slightly better:
[code:1:833d21f79c]...***********ough d************0 feet tal*******wide...
...***ust-resistant reinforced alloy mesh; precise components *****...
...****A and B scoop Air. C, D, and E scoop Earth.
F scoops Fire. G scoops Water. H, I, and J are *******....[/code:1:833d21f79c]
Now this is interesting. Air, Earth, Fire, and Water? Sounds like alchemy or something. And the directory is labeled "Mages' Guild"...
Hrmm.
"Comm" is a total mess.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Pulling out for a while. I need sleep. And food.

I'll tackle that encryption later.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning.
I've downloaded a Nexus AI core. Nice little piece of programming.
Fully sentient, yet it only takes up a few megabytes. Perfect for stealth work. I've laid a obedient and loyal personality profile over it, and set it to working on that twice-damned encryption, using the GDCA supercomputer. It should work.
I hope.
Anyway, I've named the AI "Fido".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Looks like the security programs have found my initial enterance. I'm using one of the backdoors I installed.

Still looking at the "Mages' Guild" server. Most of the stuff is encrypted, but I found this nice little tidbit:
[code:1:833d21f79c]Helix subsand vehicle***********...[/code:1:833d21f79c]
"Subsand"? Sounds interesting, huh? There's more. For clarity, I've removed the messy asterisks:
[code:1:833d21f79c]...glad the sand in Khrrck is loose, otherwise it would...
...top surface speed 20 MPH, subsand max 9 MPH.
With a bit of work, I've gotten the prototype to run at twice that.
Not practical modifications, but they work...
...found out the outrigger drive screws are jamming.
Had to design new anti-sand gaskets...
...hmage visited, he is impress...
...still can't figure out how to navigate. Sonar doesn't...
...rigged mage-scan unit. Shows up soldiers fine.
But not rocks, like I need it to...
...olved the sensor probl...
...ree heavy machine guns, on swivel mount...
...ti-tank gun opt...
...rst Helix came off the line today...[/code:1:833d21f79c]
Interesting, eh? Unusually readable, too. Apparently it's the design diary of "Arak Ironscale". Probably the same Arak in the "Defense Matrix" file. Very interesting...

Okay. Back into the data stream.
My God, what was that?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Something huge just went past me. Several terabytes of software. I have a distinct feeling that it's not friendly...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It's a AI. And it makes Fido look like a calculator. I'm trying to avoid its attention.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's after me. Dear God...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

They don't have the programming skill to make a AI. Surely. They couldn't have done this. My god, it's still chasing me. I've got to get out of the network.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's still coming after me! Damn, damn, damn...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I've slammed as many barriers as I can in the way, and it's still hammering out there. Worse yet, it's knocked down a few.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've pulled Fido in here, behind the barriers. If I am defeated, he will be copied to a secret server, with all his memories.
I hope he gets out of this safely.
I can almost forget he's not human.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Fido wants me to disconnect from the Net. I won't. I won't let a goddamn AI beat me...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've analyzed some data I got from the "Mages' Guild" server. Apparently sufficiently complex machines, when exposed to magic, become sentient. And the entire Khrrck network could be considered a single machine...
Yes, magic. Things have stopped suprising me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'm down to my last, inner firewalls.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wonder if this is how the people I hacked felt; a solid, horribly strong force hammering down their defenses, while they sat helplessly...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I won't disconnect. I won't. No.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear God... Fido! Kill it!
Connection lost. Storing log...
Log-reading session complete.
[OOC: You may comment about the Helix if you like. I plan to use it in a RP, and this shortstory seemed like a fun way for information about it to be released for comment. I think it'll work...
You can also comment about the story, if you like.
More information about Khrrck and the way magic works can be found here (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=127421&highlight=).]
Bump.
OOC: I like it, very h4x0rish. The magic bit seems fair too; is that your own system or is it 'from' somewhere? Also, bumping your threads when they're still on the first page isn't quite necessary. :wink:
Ah. Sorry.
The network's based on my own, with some modifications. I don't have such an extreme security level.
The magic system is all my own creation.
Would the Helix work, do you think?
Ahh dont worry, its no skin off my back.
Hmm well, i'm still not entirely sure what the Helix is. So... I'd say.... sure!
You're not sure? I tried to make it clear...
If you read carefully, you'll see that it's a vehicle designed to run under sand. propelled by twin Archimedes screws, and armed.
Nudge.
Santa Barbara
17-03-2004, 07:26
Hmm... well I'm not sure about Archimedes screws (I used to know what they are, but no longer. I blame alcohol!) but I imagine it would work. It would be limited to very soft and deep soils/sands though, and I think would be fairly obvious to those above as it displaced the material. And it'd be pretty noisy, yes?
Khrrck
17-03-2004, 07:54
Doesn't sand damp out noise pretty well? Plus, a lot of Khrrck is loose sand. I can just imagine the thing roaring out of the side of a dune and spraying the area with bullets...
Santa Barbara
It's a cool idea, yes. :D Reminds me of when I used to play C&C.
On sand though, I actually don't know how well sound waves travel through it... I just imagine it'd be like a low, gritty rumbling. Maybe not audible to the naked ear, but sonar or something. Me not know.
