On a day that brought dark grey clouds over Valerius Prime, one imperial decree had been issued by the aged and ailing emperor that resides within the Imperial Estate. That emperor was the 65 year-old emperor Alexander I, Tsar of Greater Valeria. His body, being consumed by cancer, has weakened in three years. A once vigorous and mighty emperor had imprisoned into a wheelchair. Any standing wore him out, and he had drastically reduced his public appearances.

Troops on ships and massive dreadnoughts were arriving in one nation that the emperor had preyed his old eyes on.

New-Transylvania.

The Army of New-Transylvania, despite being far advanced from Valerian troops, was helpless, as their numbers were nothing compared to the Valerian forces. With bolt-action rifles, crude missiles, and sabers, the Valerians wiped out the small defensive force of the large New Transylvanian Republic. The Valerian Imperial Army lost a meager 35,000 soldiers, a far cry from the annihilation of 200,000 New Transylvanian troops. The country was annexed as soon as Valerian soldiers filled the Parliament. General Karagiannis tore down the New Transylvanian flag from the flag post outside the Parliament and raised a Valerian flag, its white cross and golden double eagle flapping in the breeze.

The people of New Transylvania are a mixed bag: Romanians, Hungarians, Serbians, Russians, Greeks, and Egyptians (OOC: The ancient, not the modern) from a once grand kingdom that New Transylvania absorbed over a decade ago. Now, they all are ruled by The Valerian Empire. But will they submit to the rule of Valerians, or will they rebel, as in the case of the Magyars in the Austro-Hungarian Empire? The Egyptians especially decry for independence…

Other than the new mix of peoples absorbed into the already cosmopolitan Valerian Empire, the soldiers that have entered the capital cities of Nizhniy Beograd and Men-nefer fell upon the wonders of the modern era. Strange devices, which the Valerians called “automatons”, manufactured cars and products expediently. Everyone in the country wore funny clothes, and none of the soldiers in New Transylvania wore pickelhaubes or feathered helmets. What an odd new land. But, oh, what Valeria can learn from their newly annexed territory…

Emperor Alexander I, however, could not cherish the recent victory. Only a day after the successful invasion, he was confined to his bed, the life slowly trickling out of him with each breath. The cancer was eating him, and if he had invaded earlier, there might have been ways to treat the emperor effectively. Yet, Fate hath decried that Alexander will die. The emperor was watched over by his son and the close officials of the emperor.

“My son… be proud. You will ascend the throne of a mighty nation of around six and a half billion souls!” wheezed the emperor.

“But…”

“You don’t DARE to refuse it!”

The emperor went from calm and loving to furious. How dare his son would have restraint against the throne of glorious Valeria! Within a few minutes though, the anger subsided and so did the emperor. His eyes, calm, stared at the officials and his son. He smiled before expiring. The emperor had died at 65, ending his tumultuous reign of 23 years. Through that time, Valeria had substantially become more involved in internationalism, and the empire expanded greatly. Yet, the nation had lost any shred of democracy. It remains uncertain if Alexander II will revive democracy at all.

“THE EMPEROR IS DEAD!” cried the citizens in the streets. All of them sobbed. Workplaces shut down. People held moments of silence. Flags flew at half staff. Everyone felt the pain of a loss of their mighty ruler.

Valeria had gained a territory, lost an emperor, begun to assimilate new technology, and was to coronate a new emperor: Alexander II.
