We wouldn't want an Orwellian nation, would we?
Banning books would be way to Orwellian.

Begone, Satan! You might as well ban NationStates in your nation, too.

This post has been OOC and doesn't express the views of Nanakaland. In fact it is just here to be humorous. If it is not humorous, then I can remove it.

. . .and so it came to pass that the civilization of Roania crumbled into dust. Their deterioration came at the price of banning everything that could have enlightened their society and pushed forth progress. But instead, their society stagnated and fell. . .

(The history texts in 100 years time) Okay, maybe not, but banning anything is just silly. New thoughts can only bring progress to a nation, banning them prevents that progress.

Roania's attempts to ban the furthering of human education is looked down upon by all Lietuvs. It also fascistic to control the lives of millions by disabling their oppurtunities to be educated and free.

We would further go into a speech about the eventual deterioration of education, thought, and intelligence, but the mere banning of many books, movies, and other educational and enlightening products, has already proved that Roania could be no less stupid.

Oddly enough, this is what you said up here. However, my partners on the High Council heard this:

Blah blah blah; something about how fascism; blah blah; We're going to mock a nation much larger than us in the hope that they'll be too lazy to smite us, blah blah blah.

As much as I hate to disillusion you, allow me to make clear our intention to, at an unforseen time in the future, invade your nation, and kill your women and children.

Thank you.

"So... what is legal, eh?" Razak folds his arms, looking at the proclaimation with a wry smirk.

"Traditional Christianity, it seems... ah... Stalinist Communism... Fascism... ahh... that seems to be about it." Science Advisor Hertzfeldt shrugs. "At least, that's what I can make of this list. It doesn't make much in the way of sense, if it supports what are essentially unpopular governments and yet bans Machiavelli, who gives the best logical foundations for such governments."

"Have they banned existentialism?" Razak begins to grin impishly.

"Well, they've banned atheism. With a God, the Universe tends to have a defined purpose and thus the existentialist crisis is merely a matter of personal ignorance of that purpose."

"Not with Deistic Existentialism. Have they banned Deism?"

"Um... they're against the basic heresies that helped negatively define Roman Catholicism."

"I saw that. Arianism denies the divinity of Christ and was struck down at the Council of Nicaea in 325. Cathar--or, more accurately, the Cathari 'puritans'--is a rather vague term but if I remember correctly it generally shows up with the Manichaeans. Obviously they have a bit wrong with Gnostic Christianity." Julius grins at the odd look he receives from Jon. "Hey, Polish Catholic upbringing, okay? As long as we don't deny the divinity of Christ or say that there's both a good God and an evil God, we're set."

"What are you thinking?" Jon Hertzfeldt frowns. "Don't tell me you want us to drop Deistic existentialist literature on them."

"Yes, yes I do." Razak grins impishly.

"Is that wise?" A gruff voice behind, in the cubicle door.

Razak turns around, closes his lips, and smiles wryly. "Of course not, Speeks, but it would be very much fun."

OOC: I'll give an IC answer, but I feel it is only fair to warn you that

A) You should first read through the Tolkien Books, and find me a single instance of democracy on either side. Then come back and tell me that being democratic makes people 'good', and so on.

B) I don't, oocly, believe in good and evil. I'm more of a 'let's keep the buggers quiet and obeying' kind of person. I thought on the plains of Mars in hope of a reward, and in the name of order. Most certainly not in the name of good.

Our battles on the Plains of Mars were an abberation, and shall not be repeated, though all the Earth calls for it. We made no gains, and recieved nothing for our troubles. It is, perhaps, fitting that those who aided you the most in that war will now sooner aid Melkor regain his lost territory than you keep it, should that situation arise.

You speak of good and evil as if you understand that which you speak. Without a God, there is no good, and thus nothing to turn aside evil. Without order, there is no way to fight evil even with good. You would have us turn aside from our chosen path, and onto the path that not one of those so-called Paragons of Goodliness, the Elven Nations, have taken.

While I am not in the habit of banning anything that can be implemented in the education of my people, I must say that I agree with you concerning all points against Scientology and Hubbard. Scientology is an evil, a plague upon the earth that must be stamped out. They are a dangerous cult that use tactics of which any civilized person would be apalled. I am proud to say that Scientology in all its forms is banned in my country due to the overwhelming number of their members who have died or gone missing at their hands. Laurinda Frost looked out of the curving window over the city of Thephet-Sheta, still under construction. Already however, the graceful white forms of the buildings were growing, supervised by both vast construction drones, and organics. Though the palace wasn't nearly complete, this 'club' as it were, and the other things on the same level, such as the duplicate parliment chambers, had been built. She turned around casually, plucking a glass of some chilled beverage from a table, and listened to the banter going around. Even though she was head of Imperial Domestic Affairs, and had thus been very stressed of late, she managed to make time to relax every day.

One of the Sirithil clones was sitting there, sounding rather amused, "And so, the Roanians have banned this Hitler fellow, and someone called Max-Barry. Now a quick lookup reveals that these two are thinkers on the same lines as him. Well the first one at least. I'm not quite sure what the point of Jennifer Govenment was, it just talks about some Capitalizt state. As if it's unusual"

"Insane," said Frost, sitting down and flicking her hair back.

"Oh and something called The Passion of the Christ."

"Humm, a pornographic flick involving their god? I can see why they might want to ban that."

"Apparently there's no sex in it, though there's some kinky stuff involving scourging. Maybe they meant The Passion of Saint Tibulus. I hear that's quite good."

"Humm..." the senator said, sipping from her glass, "Silly Roanians."

OOC: Micronesian books.

And I should think my reasons for banning *them* to be obvious.

As for Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers... how dare you speak of such vile shows, that teach children that rodents are good?
(semi)OOC: :x Are you saying they aren't?!?
IC: "Interesting... We don't seem to be mentioned. See to it that these... Roanians... find out about us."
"As you say, Commander."

At this rate it would seem easier to simply say 'All books or movies not explicitly approved and/or written by the state'? Pretty soon this list will be too long to manage, especially considering the number of books, movies, and music out there that could be considered to be preaching against the state.

The Imperial Union of Cetaganda hearby bans the import of Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, on pain of visits to Lord Vorsythe's scorpion pit.

Lord Vorsythe still has a scorpion pit? How terribly passe.

We know. We've tried to convince him to upgrade to something more modern, but the old man's nearly 84 and a bit set in his ways. He'll soon be retiring, so we don't see how it hurts anything to let him have his fun.

OOC: Kain has written a book, called "Theorys of Magic". I think that you might want to ban that one eh? Although I do say, a great deal of it is informative on why magic works in the way it does. :D

The following taken from last night's showing of Up Past Your Bedtime with Elmer Gabriel, a popular late night talk show in Upper Cet Kola Ytovia:

Gabriel: Have you heard about this? Roania has published a list of books and movies that are banned in their country, and list keeps getting longer and longer and longer. Well, thanks to the wonders of satellite television, we've been able to see what's airing on Roanian TV. Here it is, Roanian television. Roll tape!

*Elmer Gabrlel comes on the screen.*

Gabriel (offscreen): Well, isn't that nice. It's us! I didn't know we were popular in Roania.

The screen goes black, with only the words "Banned by the government of Roania" showing.*

*laughter and applause*

Gabriel: That's right! We've been banned! Heehee!

"After long and arduous discussion, the Imperial Executive Council has determined that the only possible course of action is that most terrible of reactions: we shall glare at Roania in a displeased manner.

"Therefore, without further ado,"

And Nejure glares out from the screen in a displeased manner before the transmission cuts.

"So... hrr..." Speaker-to-Animals looks displeased. "You actually sent that literature?"

"Actually, no, sir." Razak frowns, then chuckles softly as he stands at rest in front of Speaker's desk, the scene of topside city life playing outside the window looking out on Stonozka. "It just turned up in their port, apparently. I was thinking more along the lines of bombing them with it."

The kzintosh sighs and leans back heavily in his simple yet comfortable chair. "I cannot say that I disagree with you. Yet this is more... vehement than I have seen you in a long time."

Razak shrugs. "I grew up with the religion they're bastardizing just so their secular state can have excuses to do things. Moreover, I grew up with nice, quiet, pious people who would all be very aghast at Roania's actions." Razak smirks wryly. "None of those people exist anymore, and so I work very hard to maintain their memory appropriately."

Speaker winces. "I did not mean to offend."

"None was taken, tzobu," Razak replies, "but I figured an explanation was necessary."

"So... what are you planning now?" Speaker leans foward, broad orange hands folding on his desk.

"Planning?" Blissful innocense, except for maybe a mischievous gleam in the eye.

"I know you. I know what you are like when you are plotting." Speaker chuckles. "You've been plotting a great deal."

"Fair enough. We grab a broadband high-power tranceiver from one of our older VY Voyeur spysat models, maybe like off the VY-6. We put a power supply and pontoons on it and stick it a good fifty kilometers off Roania's shores in international waters. When it's there, we start what I like to call 'Radio Free Roania.'"

"Explain."

"Well, we start transmitting to it--and it repeats, with enough power to get to a good portion of Roania--stuff from the various 'accepted' religions of Roania that support truth and justice and whatnot, throw in some literature, and--just for fun, I might add--everything that Roania has banned. We throw in some music and call it a nav beacon and service for bored haulers. The fact that it annoys Roania is just a side benefit."

"And," Speaker shakes his head with a soft chuckle, breath huffing through his nostrils, "because they can never prove we put it there just to annoy them..."

"Exactly. They blow it up, they look bad as we demand repayment--a very small sum, given the off-the-shelf nature of the components--for smashing property. They let it sit there, and it subverts their internal control. They jam it, and it's just more time and resources wasted on it. It's a nuisance."

Speaker shrugs. "You have permission."

A week later
Seventy-five kilometers off the Roanian Coast

The Loki-class dropship in Civilian Defense Corps Civil Engineers markings slowly pulls up and away from depositing Lighthouse One on the ocean waves. Counterbalanced by underwater weight and a tether to the bottom, the surface structure of Lighthouse One is a toroidal pontoon capped by a multifaceted geodesic dome that slowly expands upwards into the sky, members unfolding and locking into place, stretching out the conductive material between them that will both send and receive information across the lower electromagnetic spectrum.

Due to the humor of some wag, it is a yellowish off-pink color.

This is the first transmission of Lighthouse One, a service of the SADMC for all merchant marine in the area. It is 0950 on Sunday local time, and this is Victor Layton with the Morning Has Broken. We will start with some light music to wake up by, followed by a passage from chapter nine of the Bhagavad Gita, that classic masterwork of Hinduism...

OOC: Um... 50 miles in what direction? To the west, it's in Russian Force's water, to the south, it's still in Roanian waters after my conquest of the Micronesian islands, and then you hit Syskeyia, Taiwan, and The Evil Overlord as well. To the east you're not only irritating me, but also really, really, really annoying the hell out of Kaukolastan, the Corporate Islands, and C&A. To the north, you're irritating me, Russian Forces, Menelmacar, and C&A. Pretty much all at once.

IC:

We have taken note of Abatoir's suggestion. Thus, we hereby declare the previous list out of date. It is now replaced with this, single, solitary proclamation:

Any literature, entertainment, idealogy and religion that is not approved by the House of Nobles, the Commitee of Organised Religion, the High Council, The Councillors acting on their own (in regards to their own areas of responsibility), or the Royal Household is hereby unconditionally banned. Lists of approved articles may be found by contacting your provincial government's local offices.

We also note with disdain that there has been some complaint as to the fact that this limits people's freedom of choice. It doesn't. There are no rights, only privileges which we can and will suspend at any provocation. There is no cause greater than to serve your government. A place for everyone, and everyone is to be in their place. That is all that matters.

We also politely request that the decadent nations of the world cease to judge us according to their own philosophy. We do not judge them, and we demand to be treated likewise.

As it currently stands, everything which was legal under the previous system remains on the approved list. We shall examine each one in its own merits, and decide whether to maintain it or not.

Disputations from approved religious and community leaders will be heard if they desire works to be approved.

This decree was passed by the High Council in a 11-10 vote, with Princess Malissa and Prime Minister Cartwright abstaining.

<This letter was broadcasted within Roania, and a full transcript was placed in The Roanian Independent newspaper, and its regional subsidaries>

<Surprisingly, opposition to this move was muted, according to this survey carried out by Polizei Constables>

Do you approve of the movements the Roanian government is taking in order to ensure that the people of Roania have a greater sense of purpose, and are more fully united in the pursuit of said purpose?

99% said yes, sometimes before the question was even asked.

1% said no.

There is a 1% margin of error

(OOC: Wherever it will fit... given the options you provided, I'll say north. I won't pretend to know your geography. As for the others... thanks! I hardly agree with RF and C&A, and Menelmacar probably doesn't care about Hindu scriptures. After all, if people don't want to listen to it they can always change the channel...)

OOC: Okay, Scolo. Just checking before I respond ICly.

I'll do that in another thread, though, because it will be fairly long.

And, quite coincidentally, you've given me a chance to do something I've been wanting to do for a while now... Thanks, Scolo.

OOC: I'm thinking that someone carrying the necronomicon would be too powerful to be killed. You know, with the whole evil inscriptions of l33t power and whatnot. You'd need someone from housewares with a chainsaw, a boomstick and a '72 oldsmobile to deal with them.

OOC2:Didn't read the above before that one but still.
