Exploring the Trenton Ruins

New York and Jersey

OOC:This little RP is inspired by Fallout and Fallout 2. Feel free to post comments and such.

IC:
It began with a B-52 strike against Iesus Christi, the war was short, and at the very end, a single nuclear weapon was launched. The multi-megaton MIRV nuclear missile was launched by a third party. It was one missile out of many, the others destroyed, but this one slipped by. Striking Trenton and the area surrounding, 6 million lives were instantly lost and the radiation fallout affected a massive region within the former Republic. The fallout was cleaned up over the decades, however the city of Trenton itself was never cleaned up, the radiation around it, and inside of the city, considered way to dangerous for any real exposure. The effects of the radiation were only now just beginning to drop, to within levels that radiation suits would be able to provide protection against it.

The general public always thought Trenton was targeted for the sole reason that it was a population center, however this was not true. The area was carpet nuked for a reason, a reason which was known to few in the world. Beneath Trenton there were two underground facilities. One of them a self sustained bomb shelter, and the second a research facility named EasTek. One of the warheads hit the facility by a stroke of luck and punched right through the top armor and went several levels down leaving a crater in the earth. Passing satellites pointed toward the earth designed to pick up radiation would definately notice a spike in the region of Trenton. The people who lived in towns outside of the radiation zone, would come to call the area "The Glow".

“Come on Joey on your feet and hurry up and get moving….the civies are already on the ISSAPC.” The Army sergeant called out over toward a sleeping corporal.

Shifting slightly the soldier in gray power armor stood up clumsily and looked around from side to side grumbling a bit and called up, “So we’re moving out already Sarge?”

“What do you mean already? You’ve been out for two hours, hurry up and grab your gun.” The sergeant said as he moved with his own rifle held at his side. Moving out of the door, the sergeant was followed by seven other soldiers leaving the corporal behind to collect the rest of his gear and play catch up with the group.

It was nearly dawn at the Sierra Army Depot, and the lone transport sat one of the pads on the outside parking lot next to the stored artillery pieces. The last of the civilians loaded up onto the shuttle, about 12 in all. Mostly scientists and a few medics they were all anxious to visit the wasteland that was and surrounded Trenton. The grunts loaded up last and the pilot looked back to make sure everything was tied down. “Welcome to Federal Army Air, this is your captain speaking, we’ll be reaching the ruins of Trenton Domestic Airport at approximately 0…850, weather is supposed to be cloudy and cold with a chance of rain. Our in-flight movie will be how best to deal with radiation in the wastes and how best to handle any mutants or such in the city.”

The last part was more of a joke than actual statement of fact. No one knew what laid in the wastes of the city. Nothing came out, nothing went in. It was that simple. The ISSAPC pushed off its landing pad as the engines roared to life and blue flame propelled the troop transport up. The engines rotating in midair the transport then moved forward off toward the direction of Trenton, a three hour trip from the Army Depot.

“Dr. Killian, do you think anyone survived the blast in the research facility?” One of the scientists speculated as he checked over his radiation suit, and then checked his Geiger counter.

“Its not at all likely. The research center while being self contained and able to last for several years, it’s been nearly 50 since anyone has heard anything from the area. Any survivors would have died of starvation by now…” Killian shook his head from side to side slightly as he sat back the movie starting up and going over the effects of radiation and how to determine if one has radiation poisoning. The troopers were located in a completely separate area of the ISSAPC away from the civilians engaged in their own conversation.

“We’ll break up into two squads. Corporal Tyler here…if he can keep his eyes open will go with the scientists and babysit them as they try and enter the facility. Remember they have clearance we don’t. They can be there if they want, your just there to guard them for the time being. Now I’m going to take a separate squad and scout the supposed entrance to a bomb shelter…”

The still half asleep Corporal raised his head at the mention of a bomb shelter, “Your telling me people may still be alive Sarge?”

The sergeant just shook his head abit and unrolled a map onto the army crate in front of them, “Its only rumors, its doubtful anyone got to the shelter in time for it to be of any use. If they had, they’ll be wearing blue jump suits with yellow trims and numbering. On the front on the upper right hand side they’ll have the name of the Vault…from VaulTek’s records, the Trenton Vault was numbered 03. On the back in large lettering like a sports player it’ll be 03, with the name of the person above it. Again though this is all real speculation. The bombs fell fast and its doubtful anyone made it to the shelter in time.”

“Why all the secrecy Sarge? Why don’t the civies know about the shelter as well as the research facility?”

“Because Corporal, the Shelter was a military housing facility, which also stored six Peacekeeper ICBMs. We aren’t sure why they weren’t launched…”

“Alright Sarge, it sounds like a plan to me…when do you guys wanna meet up at the ISSAPC rally point again?”

“I figure we rally if all goes well at 1830 hours…if not we rendezvous again at the landing site at 0830. If you or we aren’t there by then, then you’ve got orders to leave with the civilians and return back to Sierra. Got it?”

“No problem Sarge…”

The ISSAPC dipped out of the clouds and through the ruins of the former city. Dropping down slowly it touched down at a relatively clear patch of space at the former domestic airport. The hangars rusted and damaged serverly parts of aircraft were strewn about the entire area. It appeared as if scavengers had moved through the town already but no one would suspect anyone to have survived in Trenton. The aft ramp on the troop transport lowering as the Grunts debarked first. The power suits touching down on the cracked concrete the soldiers gazed around, in several directions the remains of humans could be seen. Skeletal all of them save for a rare two or three...

"SARGE...look!" Corporal Joey Tyler pointed over toward the direction of a corpse which appeared to be rather different from the skeletal remains, this one still had some flesh on it.

Sergeant Frank Horrigan looked over toward the corpse and then back inside of the transport. "You civies stay inside of the transport until we tell you its okay to leave. Smith, Costello, and Rodgers with me. Tyler you and your squad form a four point perimeter around the ISSAPC."

"Understood Sarge."

As the four other soldiers moved to cover the corners of the ISSAPC, the sergeant and his team moved quickly over the airfield and stopped to the side of the corpse. It looked barely human, however whether this was because of the decomposition or the radiation was unknown for the time being. "Rodgers, your our resident smart guy....what do you make of this?"

The soldier reluctantly moved forward and looked down at the corpse and surpressed throwing up from the sight of the body. Gagging and dry heaving he quickly turned and ran back toward the direction of the ISSAPC...the Sargeant waited for several minutes before over the squad intercom a voice was heard, "Sarge that body has been there not nearly as long as these skeletons out here. I'm not sure of the cause of death but whatever that thing is it was alive a few months ago..."

The sargeant didnt like what that meant. An armored boot tapping onto the ground he lowered his rifle slightly and grumbled loudly."You've got to be kidding me..."

The Corporal had an idea but he didnt want to say it over the intercom. One of the scientists tried to disembark from the shuttle, and instantly ran into one of the grunts.

"I'm sorry you'll have to get back into the transport..."

"Whats the delay? We only have a day before the radiation starts to affect us through the suits..."

"Listen this is a military operation, get your ass back onto the transport NOW!"

The scientist grumbled something about manners as he stepped back into the ISSAPC to talk with the head of the civilian contingent. Meanwhile the sargeant shook his head from side to side knowing this was going to be a headache already.

((OOC: I'm in! I'll bring in the main chara from Beyond the Wastelands, my Fallout/Half-Life crossover fanfic.))

*Private Tanith Bush sighed, cradling her rifle in her hands. Her emerald green eyes scanned the horizon. The Sarge was checking out a corpse they had found, and she listened over the intercom to his and Rodger's conversation.*

Tanith: "Well... What is it?"

*She was more then a bit curious.*

"How should I know...its dead...its got clothes on, and its dead..." Rodgers said shakely over the squad channel. His legs shook for abit before they locked up and he regained himself. All the while Sergeant Horrigan knelt down and rested the heavy assault rifle next to him. Extending a hand out he patted for anything that might be a wallet or identification..two fingers were used to pat down each pocket as the power armor enclosed the whole body for added protection against the outside elements. His search however would turn out to be fruitless as nothing was on the person, and his clothing did not identify himself either and appeared to be rather tattered and torn.

"Okay, we arent gonna get any answers staring at this guy for much longer. We cant take'em back with us either, so we're gonna leave him 'ere and were gonna continue on with this mission. Private Bush, get tell those damn scientists to get off of the ISSAPC, then give the pilot the green light to lift off. Corporal Tyler gimme a small perimeter around the LZ. Dont go to far out we're only half a squad..."

Granted there were four and half squads back at the Sierra Army Depot waiting for the order to deploy incase of an emergency however they were four hours away from Trenton. Tyler wasted no time and took the remaining five troopers and had them fan out around the ISSAPC walking nearly three dozen meters away and dropping down to a single knee. "Okay we're in position.."

*Tanith responded with a brisk 'YESSIR!' Then went about fulfiling the orders giving to her, going to the ISSAPC.*

Tanith: "Alright, move it people. Yer not getting paid by the hour here, so let's try to move like we got a purpose."

*The scientists were none too pleased by Tanith's Oh so not gentle verbal prodding, but it was something they'd have to live with for the time being. Tanith kept behind the group, to keep an eye on all of them.*

Tanith: "I'm bringing up the eggheads..."

((OOC: Private Bush sounds... Dirty, for some reason. Tanith is most likely the butt of many jokes in the platoon...))

The scientists carried out some small equipment, and several currently empty storage lockers. Dr. Killian Darkwater taking the lead out of the transport he gazed at the hollowed out ruins of the few remaining buildings that had not collapsed or were only partially collapsed. "Incredible...I never ever thought I'd get to see this in my life time." The civilians had their own private communication channel and Darkwater made full use of it, "Remember to stay on our private channel. We dont want the brutes in the suits to know what we're saying."

One of the scientists chuckled abit over the communications channel as he said the following, "Not like these goons would understand what we were saying anyway."

"Yeah that maybe true, but lets not jam the intercom channel with nothing but insults toward the gracious escorts" Said with a slight snicker at the end Darkwater moved off to the side and watched as the other civilians stepped off and as the trooper stepped off. Moving everyone off to the side, they looked back. Another trooper signalled to the ISSAPC pilot with a circular motion of his right hand. Lifting up from the cleared patch of concreate the shuttle quickly climbed up and away.

Sergeant Horrigan watched as the shuttle disappeared off into the distance and called over the general freqency to everyone else. It was something everyone could here no matter what private channels they were on. "Lets get moving people. Stay out of the buildings and make sure your guns are on safety. We dont need any accidents. You civies make sure to stay with the group. We know you guys want to explore and stuff, but we arent here for that, least not yet. This is a RECON Op folks. Keep that in mind...Tetra take point..."

Corporal Tyler moved up beside of Sergeant Horrigan and said in a low tone, "What about the Vault?"

Horrigan returned the whisper so that the nearby scientists wouldnt hear, "We'll save that for when the eggheads go back...we'll stick around for another few hours...right now lets just see how the EasTek facility is right now."

Corporal Tyler nodded his head abit and then moved along the line up toward the front where Private Bush would have been, "Private, keep your eyes peeled the sat photos showed that the facility was a big hole in the ground. However the facility is clearcut north of the airport. About two-three klicks, with that body around, something more has to be around here. So keep your eyes peeled, okay?"

Tanith: "Aye Sarge..."

*Tetra was her callsign, it's been her nickname ever since she was little. Moving up ahead of the group, Tanith took point, leading the way ahead of the others. She liked point position, cause she'd be the first to encounter any hostiles and would therefore get more action then any of the others.*

Tyler: "Private, the sat photos showed that the facility was a big hole in the ground. However the facility is clearcut north of the airport. About two-three klicks. With that body around, something more has to be around here. So keep your eyes peeled, okay?"

Tanith: "You got it Corporal..."

*Tanith passed by the corpse, took a brief glance at it.*

Tanith: "Madre de Dios... That's one ugly dead pendayo..."

*That being said, she moved on, leading their small group north of the airfield into the decimated city. Her eyes kept scanning the scene, taking in all she saw, her senses ever alert for danger.*

Tanith: There's nothing here... But... "Hey... Anyone else get the feeling that we're being watched?"

*She had said over the trooper's private comm channel, so as not to panic the eggheads, kicking aside another fresh corpse out of her path.*
