OOC: We're going to set this in ASW's future (none of this will transpire in the forums, though. This is just for the sake of the present environment. And a few weapons... and now, we open at the hospital. The year is maybe 2020, and the ASW government is posing as democracy ever since the present leader was overthrown a few years later. Of course, there was a massive bioweapons experiment involving the intermixing of species to create creatures for warfare, but they broke loose.
IC:
Alex Steinhauser woke up early morning, his head throbbing dully. He looked up at the polished ceiling that reflected his thin, gaunt face in the tile. He looked horrible with his thick red hair matted with oil, thick bags underneath his bloodshot eyes. He tried to remember where he was, but it was a blur in his mind, a thick fog that wouldn't yield no matter how hard he pressed. He could remember his name, his date of birth, and his city he was in, but everything else was faded. Marriage, work, friends, family, what happened to him was all a thick blur.
Alex struggled to move, but it felt like he was weighed down by several tons. He tried to move his head up, but his headache forced him back down into what was a thick bed. He looked down to try and see where he was, and he saw numerous needles and electrodes attatched to his body, all over his arms, and on his chest and forehead. Several machines nearby were monitoring him. He realized he was in a hospital. The door was left open to his room, and outside several people walked by. Alex tried to open his mouth to speak, but it was dry and parched, and hurt to speak. He closed his mouth again. Maybe 20 minutes later, a man in a lab coat walked by the door. He seemed rather perturbed, and looked in.
"Good morning, sir. How are you?"
Alex tried to speak, but all that came out was an incoherent grunt. The man poured a glass of water, and held it to Alex's lips. He told him to take little sips while he continued speaking. The water seemed to restore strength to Alex.
"It's been 2 weeks since you were first brought in here. We don't really know what happened to you, but it appears you've had a concussion from your job. We're not sure what exactly it is you do, but the government contacted us regarding your condition. They wanted us to keep you away from the rest of the patients and under close monitoring. Do you remember your job?"
"No..." Alex rasped out. The water had restored his ability to speak.
"We have your belongings in the closet. Would you like them? They might help you remember."
"Yes," he whispered softly. The little old doctor stood up from the side of the bed, and pulled out the items. He set them on the foot of the bed, and handed them one at a time to Alex.
The first was an ID card that read OPTICON AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL: ALEX STEINHAUSER. AGE: 24, WEIGHT: 146 LBS., HEIGHT: 5'10". LAB 107. MAXIMUM SECURITY CLEARANCE scattered over the different parts.
A second item, a 9 mm handgun was passed to him. It had a half-empty clip on it. On the side of the muzzle was the logo for H&K, Heckler und Koch. The doctor commetned about how the gun was recently fired when it was first found.
Some clothes, mainly a thick lab coat, were handed to him next. The lab coat smelled of must and old detergent. It had been recently washed, but there were several pale red spots on the back. Alex was told it was blood. His blood.
"You're lucky you survived that hit to your head. Listen, I have other patients to attend to. You take it easy. You want to watch anythying on TV?"
"News..."
The doctor picked up the remote in his hand and turned on the television. He turned the channel to 4, which was playing the present news broadcast, apparently an emergency report.
"...9.15 a.m. this morning, several new sightings of the yet unidentified animals have been spotted. Not too long after the sighting of these strange creatures, several bodies were found on a path in the woods. They had been dead only 20 minutes. Police have reason to believe it was these strange animals that killed the mountain hikers. During autopsy, in an even more disturbing turn of events, the dead tissues of the hikers appeared to be evolving, not even dead at all. The corpses were sealed in the room and burned.
"Many liberalist groups have accused the government of experimenting in biological warfare and fast-acting mutagens. President Anthony Roberts released a press-statement earlier today regarding the subject, telling the public that he 'condemns the use of biological weapons and would never develop them in this proud nation.' Liberals still accuse the president of..."
The power cut short in the middle of the news broadcast. The doctor had been watching with intense interest, but was immediately startled. Several emergency lights went on across the hospital, and outside, the whirring of helicopter blades could be heard. A window shattered in a different room, and a woman's screaming was cut short by gunfire. One man was screaming at new arrivals to move out and find something, but what?
Several minutes later, the men entered Alex's bedroom. One leveled his weapon at the doctor.
"Get up. Now! And step away from him!"
The doctor did as he was told, but Alex just stared. He was scared shitless. One of the men motioned to another. The second stepped up holding a bottle and a cloth. He doused the cloth and held it to Alex's face. He feel unconscious in a matter of minutes.
-
Alex woke again. His head hurt even worse than when he woke up in the hospital, except now he was in a bright room, with several lamps trained on him. A man was standing nearby the table, which was made out of cold steel. It felt like an examination table for autopsies.
"Well, well, well, Alex, you've caused quite a ruckus, getting attacked by your own experiments and releasing them from 107. It's been dreadfully hard hunting them down, and much of the military and police are busy relocating to the capital. You realize that we're only defended by the men in this structure and the local police. Frankly, we're on orders to terminate you. But let's be brief... they said we could take any desired action. They also wanted a live specimen, and knowing the nature of the mutagens... well, needless to say, you're what we've hoped for. Not even this area is safe. We're in the middle of the woods, not far from the last killings of these creatures. If you listen carefully in the distance, you can even hear the gunfire coming nearer. Not only have we had to deal with those creatures, but those people who want to see you alive. You've caused quite a fuss, and it's audible all over ASW. Listen..."
Alex strained his ears. Off in the distance, the sound of weapons firing echoed off in the distance.
"It's only a matter of time before they get here, so I need to work quickly. If you'll excuse me, I must take up my work." The man reached for a rather nasty looking scalpel. If Alex were only in his top physical condition, he would have hit the man in the face and started to strangle him, but it wasn't that much of an option. He lay back and waited for the blade.
