We in Edolia have three national languages:

The first, spoken by a good 50% of the populace is Edoliani which is basically Latin spoken with a very strange Scottish/German accent and with very strange pronunciation. Another 20% of the populace speaks Mandarin Chinese. 30% of the populace speaks Nova Edoliani. That language is, for the most part Edoliani vocabulary with Chinese (somewhat modified using some Englishisms) grammar.

Primarily the American dialect of English, which is our official language. However, Greek, Russian, and Vietnamese are also very commonly-spoken, and we have one of the probably few towns existing where everyone uses Latin as their daily language. Somewhat small (last census showed 142 residents), but nonetheless existant.

In Agh Shankkakur they speak Common (which is pretty much Ancient Aramaic with a few English words thrown in for good measure), except for certain occasions (such as religious rituals) and the ruling Theocracy, who speak the language of the Lord of the Jealous Mumblings (Agh Shankkakur).

Here's a sample:

Xixxi xixxu xixxxaq xlathu qugxfl Agh Shankkakur

Also, certain strange people are known to speak in the language of the Elder Ones, such as the chant to Cthulhu. Both languages are essentially unpronounceable for foreigners, especially the latter, because it was obviously designed for creatures who have tentacles for mouths.

So yeah.

Omz222
08-03-2004, 05:06
Most Omzians speak the Omzian, although many also know (and learn in school) English -- especially the English minority in Omz222. A Chinese minority also speaks Chinese (northern Chinese "dialect"/style for the most), although Chinese is not taught at most schools.

However, the official language in Omzian Democratic Federal Republic is both English and Omzian, although in many provinces only Omzian is the provincial official language. English isn't an official language from the start: the Omzian Ganare (Parliament) passed a legislation that makes English the official language in 1992, 29 years after the forming of the Omzian government.

Omzian can be considered as an unique mix between various Eastern Asian languages with English, although its "official" routes does not start from any of the Asian languages nor English. The English in Omzian Nation is primarily based on the American "system", although spellings are mostly based on British ones.
Kanuckistan

Kanuckstani English is the offical language, tho there are innumerible other languages spoken by varrious ethnic groups.

It's fundamentally similar to Canadian English, which itself is a mix of American and British English; the main difference was the implimentation of dynamicly interchangible elements and varriations, reflecting the often slight differences is the version of english spoken by the varrious peoples who orriginally founded the nation(It's also a perfect way to justify spelling errors :D ).

Iansisle
08-03-2004, 07:23
Nearly all Shieldians speak English, but the linguistic distinctions of the Empire and Commonwealth are harder to classify. French is widely spoken in Noropia, Italian in Tharia, and German in Dianatran. All Gallagans are accused of speaking ‘Gallagan’ - a language which does not, in fact even exist. Most of Iansislean Gallaga speaks either Bengali or Hindi, though Marathi , Khasi, Assamese, Santali, Burmese, Kukichin, Shan, and Gurkhi are also relatively common. Latin, the language of the enormous Patria Effitium (the Fatherland of the Effitians) which dominates Iansisle’s eastern frontier, is the language of the higher classes, the church, the intellectual elite, and often official diplomacy.

Recently, there have been those who champion movement away from English and Latin (which certain linguists see as foreign, imposed languages) and towards Ancient Shieldese. However, Shieldese is an extremely inflected language, even to a greater degree than Latin, and often only the idle elite have time to learn to speak it correctly.

Tsaraine
08-03-2004, 08:54
Tsaraine's linguistic history is also it's political history. Originally, there was one major language in central Tsaraine, classified as Sche I. This was divided into two dialects - the Sche'dayach and the Hyazinari, spoken by the central Sche'dayach and the Northern Hyazinari respectively.

Then the Tsa invaded (where precisely from is an enigma), speaking Sekhel (Ekatorik, the language of Tsaraine's Eastern neighbour, is a relation of Sekhel).

Through cultural assimilation, the Sche'dayach and Hyazinari tongues became reduced to dialects of Sekhel, with many traditional words and names retained (one thing which went the other way was the Sche'dayach adjectival ending -ch, -kh in Sekhel - possibly related to Ekatorik -k).

Later on, the early First Dominion Sekhel became fragmented yet again into the Southron branch south of the Skirré Mountains and the Eastron branch (near the border with Ekatori, and caused by exchange with that people. Called Westron in Ekatori), and the Ktrazirh (from the latter, smaller migration of the Tsa-related Ktrazirha people).

Then the later First Dominion came into contact with the Kymnari, who, being insular, did not add much to the language - kaiu and kuira being the only Kymnari words to enter regular usage.

Today in the Second Dominion, the national language is Sekhel, in the following dialects; Common, Southron, Eastron, Sche'dayach, Hyazinari, and Ktrazirh. Kymnari is also spoken by a very small minority, primarily in ritual.

Whyzardia
08-03-2004, 11:55
The official language of the Incorporated States of Whyzardia is English. However, there are several distinctive dialects:

The Vulgar dialect is spoken by those worthless miscreants who are totally bemused by our pervasive popular culture and continue to clog our prisons by imitating the outrageous behavior constantly bombarding them from our all pervasive media outlets.

Gobblety-Gook is the dialect spoken by academics and politicians.

Corporate Doublespeak is the dialect of the fabulously wealthy.

Interestingly enough, all three dialects sound quite similar to each other and frequently use exactly the same words yet nobody can seem understand anything spoken in a dialect other than their own. The one exception are our lawyers, they tend to be masters of both Gobblety-Gook and Corporate Doublespeak as well as their own specialized dialect of Legalese.
Teakland
08-03-2004, 19:03
A Message from the People’s Republic of Teakland

The people of Teakland have three Official Languages, and two thirds of the citizens are functionally fluent in at least two of them. Many citizens also speak at least one other, non-official language, thanks to the language education programs offered by the public schools and continuing education.

The three Official Languages in Teakland are come from the four groups that first settled the region. The official languages are, in order of their prevalence: English - North American and British Dialects (70%), Spanish (52%), and Thai (40%).

The Linguistics Academy of Teakland is also in the midst of the development of a fourth Official Language that the government hopes to institute in no less than two years. The proposed language, currently referred to in linguistic circles as Teak, uses affixed grammatical morphemes to indicate tense and subject/object, which makes word order more flexible than in other languages, as well as a regularized verb conjunction. It is hoped that Teak will be used not only by the scholarly and technical community, but as a functional language for the majority of Teaklanders.

If you would like to learn more about the language and culture of Teakland, you may contact my ministry for more details.

Sincerely,
Beverly Fernandes
Minister of Communication

09-03-2004, 05:26
Valeria is a vastly cosmopolitan nation, mainly because it had subjugated and conquered a vast myriad of peoples. The language of Valeria is Valerian; Valerian is a dialect of Russian that has more Latin, Greek, French, and English influence than its counterpart. However, the large population of Iansislian immigrants that have arrived in recent decades have introduced English as a major language. Also, languages all depend on regions. For example, people in New Valeria speak mostly Latin, but Italian is used at the capital city of Torino.

Most people in Magnus Valerius itself tend to speak two or more languages.

In the Island Colonies (AHI and Kydonia), there is also native tribes of East Asian descent that speak versions of Japanese. These people tend to live in distant islands that aren't yet settled, so the true number of these tribes are unknown.

The Federal Republic of Aerigia is a multi-cultral state, and Aerigians speak many different languages.

It is written in traditional form, and both Mandarin and Cantonese is spoken. Other languages that travelers may come across in the area are Japanese and Korean.

Hawking
14-03-2004, 04:58
The Progressive Republic of Hawking officially recognises three national languages--English (UK), Russian and Chinese. These are set apart from the rest of the extremely broad range of languages and dialects spoken in Hawking, in that the three are each in use by over 35% of the population (English, 84%; Russian, 71%; Chinese, 37%).

Until only recently, Chinese was not recognised as a national language in Hawking. With the size of its Chinese population increasing, the number of Chinese-speaking people living in the nation has also increased.

It should be noted that almost all Hawkingers are either bilingual or multilingual. Some individuals can speak all of the official languages, and some even know more than just the three. The vast majority, however, speak only English and Russian (they are raised so). Most signage throughout Hawking features writing in English and Russian characters, with Mandarin symbols now gradually beginning to become commonplace.
