Field Hockey World Cup 10 - The Last Chance For Glory

NEWI Cefn Druids
07-03-2004, 19:03
Apologies to all for the long wait, but it is now time for the tenth and, sadly, final installment of the NS Field Hockey World Cup to commence. The NCDFHF would like to thank the committee on behalf of themselves and their Slioponian counterparts for allowing them to host such a prestigious event, as well as to Liverpool England, who also put forward a very high quality bid.

But without further ado, let's get on with things. The first round will again consist of four groups of four teams. Groups A and B will play in Sliponia, while Groups C and D will be here in NEWI Cefn Druids. They will be followed by the the quarter-finals and so on, in the following structure:

[code:1:59addc29c9]
Winner A -|
|--Winner 1 -|
Second C -| |
|--Winner SF1
Winner B -| |
|--Winner 2 -|
Second D -| In Sliponia

|--Winner 3 -|
Second A -| |

[/code:1:59addc29c9]

After this, the final will be played in Sliponia, while the 3rd/4th place match will be held in NEWI Cefn Druids.

The draw will be made soon, but first, we shall show you the four stadia here in NEWI Cefn Druids that will be used for the competition.

http://www.uni.edu/pubrel/newsroom/photos/Arena.jpg

The Hole, Mawr
Capacity: 78,000

The hole is NEWI Cefn Druids' brand spanking new National Stadium, which is as yet unused. Its name comes from the fact that it was created by digging a two hundred metre deep hole in the ground. As a result of the severe drop, the stadium is roofed when in use, though when it is not, the pitch can be lifted to ground level to allow sunlight to reach it.

Matches here: Group D: 1v2, 1v3, 1v4, Semi-final 2.

http://www.commonwealthgames98.com/hockm/hockey_stadium.jpg

Kirkanden Clocktower
Capacity: 14,500

The Kirkanden Clocktower ground is NEWI Cefn Druids' largest purpose built field hockey stadium. In the rural north, Kirkanden is one of NEWI's oldest towns, dating back over 1800 years. The clocktower, after which the ground is named, was destroyed by fire during protests by farmers against building new towns and cities in random places in the countryside.

Matches here: Group D: 3v4, 2v4, 2v3, Quarter final 1.

The Brook, Garth
Capacity: 10,000

Garth is the newest town in NEWI Cefn Druids, with the first homes erected there only two years ago. During this time, the population has soared pest the million mark, as people have flooded to this place that just seemed to be created out of nothing in the middle of the Druid countryside. The Brook was built as it was felt that Garth needed a hockey stadium for it's growing numbers.

Matches here: Group C: 3v4, 2v4, 2v3, Quarter final 2.

http://www.chinanews.com.cn/subsite/2001olympic/200107040015_2_1.jpg

The Viaduct, Cefn
Capacity: 19,000

The viaduct is the home of Cefn Athletic Football Club, but has never seen international football action because of the larger ground of their local rivals, Cefn Albion. It is rumoured that the ground was only selected as the Druid head of the hosting bid is a bitter Athletic fan, though these rumours have been flatly denied.

Matches here: Group C: 1v2, 1v3, 1v4, 3rd/4th place match.

Belmorians drawn with 3 hockey ledgends

So here we are, the last Field Hockey World Cup, with TBF drawn in a group of hockey ledgends. Ins spot 2 we have to face off the mighty Lovisa, although ranked 26, they can create some explicable hockey and certainly can pull an upset out of the bags. In spot 3 lies the former-hosts Tanah Burung. Their home advantage in the first world cup did not help them but a steady improval rate followed and are, along TBF the only 2 nations in FHWC10 that were in FHWC1. Despite 12 years out they could still surprise us and are in with a good chance of qualification. Then, upcomes another FHWCC member, Cockbill Street whose quarter final and semi finals appearences in the last few cups have shown they are a forse to be reconed with, though, without a win over us to boast, our boys should come into our hardest match in confidence.

DOUBLE POST!

OOC - My knowledge of field hockey is very limited, for I've never watched it on TV and I've only ever played it three times in RL in gym class. I got banned from field hockey during that third game for taking a baseball cut at a ball in mid-air, so yeah, I don't know much about the sport so expect my RPs to have as little to do as field hockey as possible.
Brazillico
07-03-2004, 22:22
Joao Juarez: So we're here with Isabella Perez, captain of Brazillico's national field hockey team, the Lady Instigaters. Isabella, you've been drawn in a tough group, how do you feel about your opponents.

Isabella Perez: To be honest, I haven't really looked at the fixtures yet.

JJ: Well all the teams in Group B are in the top 11 in the world, that is except the Lady Instigaters.

IP: We're well aware that we're newcomers to the scene.

JJ: Well how about some thoughts about your first match opponents, Sliponia.

IP: I heard they're good. That's about all we've heard about them so far.

JJ: Ok. How about other Group B competitors Belmorian Scandanavia and Wella.

IP: Yeah, someone told me they were good too. I'd be lying if I said anything more about them than that.

JJ: What? How can you be in a World Cup, which only takes the sixteen finest teams in the World, and reach this stage without knowing anything about your opponents. I mean, how can you even possibly prepare a gameplan?

IP: We're not called the Lady Instigators for nothing and usually try to physically manhandle opposing teams. We then create passing lanes and discourage scoring opportunities through intimidation.

JJ: These are mostly Men's teams in this contest. Don't you think they may have a strength advantage over you.

IP: Come on, they're field hockey players. How tough can they be?

JJ: These are elite athletes.

IP: Whatever. The Lady Instigators only know one way to play, and that's the way we're gonna do things. If the players on opposing teams aren't happy, they can expect my stick up their ass in the near future.

JJ: Enchanting. Well, that's all the time we have since field hockey isn't important at all to the people of this nation. This has been a field hockey update and we'll we back following the Lady Gators' match against field hockey powerhouses, Sliponia. Good night.

From the Sikenian Daily:

You will lose again, Junis-Omeh!
The tenth field hockey world cup is about to start and the Junis-Omeh are favorites in a group consisting also of Lennon Marx, NEWI Cefn Druids and New Manhattan. Everyone expects the match against Lennon Marx to be a loss, for one single reason: The Junis-Omeh lost every time the first match (with only two exceptions in 8 cups). While the match against Lennon Marx would be described as a 'must-win', the date as first match reduces the chances for the Orange-blues highly! Th next match against the Druids will be perhaps better, since it is not the first matrch and the Druids are quite used to losing. The disadvantage is that the druids will have the home advantage on their side. New Manhattan hosted world Cup 9, which On'he's team won. This could be quite a good omen, but New Manhattan in know to qualify in every field hockey world cup they are in. this group is no group of death, but it won't be a walk-through for the Lasane!

The rejistanian roster:
1. Janake I Jasra
2. Syku Li~ik
3. Kansu Syku
4. Exa Sil
5. Vesin Mi~lr
6. Ka~nsu La~nja
7. Nana Su
8. Hla Mjekir
9. Selda Taki~ll
10. Inira Hsi
11. Kie Naruk

Substitutes:
Esila Y
Hike Darim
Jen Hilet
Daha Mana~o
Suru Mao

Coach: Sa-Tri On
Tanah Burung
08-03-2004, 04:37
After a lengthy absence, Tanah Burung attempts to return to the field of hockey. Great things have always been expected of this country in field hockey. That's a sharp contrast to the national ice hockey team, which is expected to do no more than occasionally steal a point from Iansisle and fall over drunk.

But no one expects much from this year's field hockey entry, playing mostly for "old times sake." Particularly with The Belmore Family in the group (a team that has beaten Tanah Burung every time they have met in this sport), an early exit seems likely. In fact, much more attention has been paid to what the team's nickname will be. It has changed each FHWC to date, and this final roll of the dice will be no exception. The team last known as the Fighting Ostriches is holding a national poll to choose their new nickname from among several choices, all based on bird names:

The Hopeless Hornbills
The Asian Frogmouths
The Painted Snipes
The Boobies
The Loons
The Belmore Family

Belmorians fly over Lovisa

There was a great start from the Belmorians last night as they easily breezed past Lovisa 3-0. The game was 1 sided all the way through, the Belmorians having a high percentage of the possession right the way through the match.

The team went out in a strange formation, with Alan Belmore playing on the right, in the coaches attempt to get some speed in the wings

[code:1:72f36982dd]FW Peter Edwarde
MF Tom Potter Simon Rivers Alan Belmore
DMF James Griffifs
DF Robin Aggleton Will Edwards Paul Battersby
Sweeper Dan Austin
GK William Dean[/code:1:72f36982dd]

The first goal was from Peter Edwarde. His great receival of the flying cross from Alan Belmore was nicely delt with, just tapping the ball into the corner of the goal. From then on we squandered many chances, with Peter Edwarde fannying around with the ball on the top of the D. The next best chance of the half fell to Simon Rivers whose fancy footwork took him around 3 defenders, only to blast it wide, to the large disapproval of the Blue crowd. The half finished 1-0 to the good guys.

After the break we had changed the formation. Peter Edwarde had been dropped, Alan Belmore moved into the centre and Aaron Odedra starting.

[code:1:72f36982dd]FW Alan Belmore
MF Tom Potter Simon Rivers Aaron Odedra
DMF James Griffifs
DF Robin Aggleton Will Edwards Paul Battersby
Sweeper Dan Austin
GK William Dean[/code:1:72f36982dd]

And with this formation we went straight on to score 2 goals. The first was from a beautiful run down the wing by Potter, sweeped into the centre to Belmore who just lifted it above the diving keeper into the goal. The next wawas from sSimon Rivers after a beautiful 1 2 with Aaron Odedra to get him into the box, he took the ball and blasted the ball high into the goal giving us a coumfterble 3-0 win.

From the Sikenian Daily:

First match - A win?
Every Rejistanian knows that there are some eternal truths in field hockey: North-mintanians don't play field hockey even similar to good, Najajara will never get relegated and the national team can't win the first match. Two of these truths are proven wrong in this first match of the last FHWC: The Junis-Omeh won the first match and two north-mintanians were the best players in this match. Everyone was surprised when Hike Darim and Jen Hilet from Hetkali Hokeji and KaMaRi 1976 found their way into the roster, but no one expected them to start. Sa-Tri On seemed to think that the first match will be lost, since it is the first match, so he let Darim'he and Hilet'he start in the midfield. Perhaps this unsuspected change in the roster confused the goddess of luck or maybe there was no opening-match-curse. Fact was, that Lennon Marx had no chance against the team. At half-time, the Junis-Omeh leaded 2-0, and despite the change of tactics of the Marxists in the second half, which had the aim of damage limiting, th final score was 3-0. Another information is just on the newsticker: Najajara perhaps won't get a license for the first league this year due to financial difficulties - Whether this is true or not - there is a need for new eternal truths in this sport.

Field Hockey Team Beats NEWI Cefn Druids By Only 1 Goal, Many Call Result "Godmodding"
KIRKANDEN, NCD - Though home advantage went the other way this time, many still believe that, without outside influence, it is almost impossible for New Manhattan to beat NEWI Cefn Druids by only 3-2 in field hockey. The widespread belief that results in international sports are determined by the host of the event, regardless of the players' abilities or any injuries, gained even more support with the small win, which did not come close to the 8-1 blowout four years ago in New City. Even as research into the machinery required for international competition continues in Commerce Heights and has only reached a small amount of its potential, it seems almost certain that some force beyond normal field hockey play was involved in the result.
(07) New Manhattan 3
(13) NEWI Cefn Druids 2 - FT*
*It is suspected that the Belmorian that put together the rankings accidentally transposed the digits in NEWI Cefn Druids' rank, and it is really supposed to be 31 as it was in FHWC9.

Tanah Burung
13-03-2004, 05:40
A 4-4 draw against Cockbill Street showed that the Frogmouths can't play defence, but they can score. Game two just showed they can't play defence.

Pitted against the only team to have played in every FHWC, the Frogmouths gave themselves a decent chance. Hadn't The Belmore Family group roundup predicted of Tanah Burung: "Despite 12 years out they could still surprise us and are in with a good chance of qualification."

If the Frogmouths surprised the Amazing Belmores, it was only with their inept play. Goal after goal poured past the Frogmouths like rain through a leaky roof. One, two, three, the goals came. Then it was halftime. Four, five, six, the goals came. Tanah Burung got one back, but it was probably because Belmores were laughing so hard.

Final score:

Defense! Defense?
The game Rejistania vs NEWI Cefn Druid was a match of inspired attacking, great goals and two inept defenses. The final score was 7-5 for the Junis-Omeh. Inira Hsi made the second hat trick in his carreer on international level. Also Kie Naruk, Selda Taki~ll and the hetkalian surprise Hike Darim put their name on the scoreboard. One of the negative apperances surely was made by goalie Janake I Jasra, who also put his name on the scoreboard - for the druids.

The highly dramatic match saw no less than four changes of the lead in the first half. whenever the Junis-Omeh archieved a one goal lead, the druids responded by increasing their score even more. The score at the end of the first half was 3-4 against the Junis-Omeh. to give you an impression of the offensive style of match: in the 37th minute, the lasane was leading 5-4. during the end of the second half, the match lost its speed, since both teams got tired. at the end, it was perhaps the better fitness or a stroke of luck, which decided the game for the Orange-Blues.

The rumour that the defensive players and goalies of both teams were drinking together on the evening before the match, one side to celebrate the win, the other to cope with the loss, could not be proven.

The result:

GOALS IN THE HOLE
Tony van der Trevor in Mawr for Rejisania 7 NEWI Cefn Druids 5

NEWI Cefn Druids plucky field hockey players went out of the World Cup in the most spectacular fashion in the national stadium, The Hole, losing out in an epic twelve goal thriller to world champions Rejistania. Despite it only being the second match The Hole had ever hosted, it seems unlikely that it will see such a thrilling match in any sport for many years to come.

It was thrilling stuff, to say the least. For one thing, a mechanical error on the electronic scoreboard caused much amusement. Apparently, in the scorer’s box, there was no way of calculating home score, as rare as it is for the Druids to score at all. However, this was soon fixed, and an enthralling match was played for all. Except for the two defences, who seemed to have not turned up at all.

By half time, the hosts were in a surprising 4-3 lead, after two goals from Trevor, one from Fox and an own goal by Junis-Omeh ‘keeper I Jasra edged them ahead. Interestingly, it was the only the second own goal of I Jasra’s career, both of which had been in matches against the Druids. This means that the Rejistanian goalkeeper is now t in the Druids’ all time scoring listings.

However, after edging the manic first half, the world champs showed why they had earned that status by playing the Druids off the pitch, winning the half 4-1. It meant that they had qualified for the quarter finals, while the Druids were knocked out. Next up for the Rejistanians will be New Manhattan, who are also through to the next stage. However, the group winners have the advantage of staying in NEWI Cefn Druids and not taking a long flight to Sliponia to face the Group B winners.

Final score:
Rejistania 7 [His 5, 22, 37, Naruk 18, 56, Taki~ll 31, Darim 47]

It's been a disappointing run for the Lady Instigators in the Field Hockey World Cup thus far, collecting two losses in as many games and standing dead last in group A with a -7 goal differential.

The first game was a match which the Lady Gators can take pride in, a closely contested battle against perennial powerhouses, Sliponia. The Sliponian side raced out to a 3-0 lead, but the Lady Gators were able to wear down the opposing side, i.e. injure them. By the end of the match, with most Sliponians complaining of sore shins or black eyes or broken ribs, the Lady Gators were able to put two past the keeper, making it a one-goal affair. However, it was not to be, as the scrappy Sliponian side were able to hold on and win 3-2.

The next match against Belmorian Scandanavia can only be described by one-word; blowout. A watered-down Brazillico side took to the field to start the game, thanks to the wealth of suspensions which the Lady Gators recieved due to the Sliponia match. The result was ugly, a side less skilled and less vicious bowed down as the experienced Belmorian Scandanavian side pummeled the Brazillicans to a 7-1 loss. The match wasn't a complete stinker however, as the Lady Gators were able to injure two opposing players, notably the Belmorian's captain, who fell victim to a stiff stick shot in the chops.

The Junis-Omeh defeated the former FHWC-hosts and current world cup co-hosts Cockbill-Street in a hard-fought 3-1. Coach Sa-Tri On again trusted the two north-mintanians Darim'he and Hilet'het in the midfield. The match saw numerous chances for both sides. In the 4th minute, the Streeters nearly archieved the early led, but Janake I Jasra reacted fast enough. However, the Streeters took the lead 11 minutes later. The Orange-Blues were shocked and reacted by fierce attacking. In the 23rd minute, Exa Sil archieved the equalizer in a penalty flick. The first half ended 1-1, despite a great chance for the Streeters in the 299th minute. The second half was not that one-sided as the two oals for the Orange-Blus would expect, the Streeters just lacked the deciding bit of luck, while Inira Hsi and Kie Naruk haad enough to raise the score to 3-1.

The result:
Rejistania 3 (Sil 25th, Hsi 43rd, Naruk 54th)
Cockbill Street 1 (<player> 15th)

Good wins over evil as Belmorians trounce New Manhatten.

The entire Belmore Family rejoiced last night as TBF made it into the final 4, destroying the evil capatilists of New Manhatten 1-0. It was a hard faught match, with no room for mistakes.

But the goal came in the first half when there was a mistake by NM. Alan Belmore's stunning cross ito the middle went under <player 2>'s stick giving Peter Edwarde the breakthrough.

The second half was a midfield affair. very few balls managed to scrape their way past the 20m mark, leaving many of the fans asleep.

Belmore breze past Liverpool England as Alan Belmore scores a hatrick

Alan Belmore became hero of the TBFing Field Hockey World Cup as he put them in their 2nd consecutive Field Hockey World Cup Final.

The goals all came in the first half. The first was after a long through ball from midfield which he simply just tapped past the keeper. The second came from a short corner when Tom Potter's strong ball to Belmore left him with a nice easy hit and the third came from a penlty flick on the brink of half time which he lifted into the corner.

A general strike in Rejistania made it impossible to give information in known length and quality
(OOC: My computer is the one, who is on strike. I go online on every possible and impossible location now.)

Sorry about the delay everyone, I've been given some god-awful shifts at work that are stopping me from finding much time to do this, but the final result will be TGed by this time tomorrow, or else we'll swap the matchball for my testicles and take turns at smashing them about with our sticks. I admit, that might sound fun, but it isn't exactly a World Cup Final, is it?

Belmorians party in the street as we claim our first international trophy

The entirety of The Belmore Family is in a day of celebration after winning the Field Hockey World Cup. This is TBF’s first international cup in over 300 years. We truly are the champions now. Our thrilling 6-5 win over Rejistania was a bloody affair, but probably the most entertaining match ever.

Fireworks go off in the Belmorian capital, Alan City

The pre-match show was a great prologue to the begging of the match. By the time the teams were out the atmosphere was already for a great game of hockey. And that’s they got. The Belmorians were the first side to rejoice. After Alan Belmore played the ball back to Rivers, he quickly got it out to Potter who ran it down the wing. After escaping 2 tackles Potter found himself in the corner. He blasted the ball into middle where Alan Belmore was waiting to tap the ball into the net. 1-0 to the good guys. But Rejistania did not give up. Their fighting play pulled them a goal back on the 5th minute when Mi~lr converted a short corner. The next 10 minutes where action packed. With TBF controlling the most of the game, Rejistania looked to be struggling. They were pinned back in their own D and they continually had to call on their forwards to defend. But suddenly they got a break. Su got the ball up to Hsi who had no problem dribbling past the keeper. 2-1 to the bad guys. Now Rejistania had the confidence to carry this final up. Shortly after the push back, it was TBF’s turn to defend, blocked into our own D. But Rejistania were more successful than TBF, turning the pressure into a goal. 3-1 to Rejistania. The end of the half was pretty even, a bloody midfield affair. But just before the break, the Belmorian defences fell. Robin Aggleton tripped <player> in the box, giving Rejistania a penalty flick. Hsi calmly placed the ball in the top corner. 4-1 to the bad guys.

After the break the Belmorians were looking confident. But that confidence was shattered as Naruk went through to score a fifth for Rejistania. Then their coach decided it was over. Substituting Naruk, Sil and Li~ik off, he began to relax. But then disaster struck for Rejistania. Hsi tripped and fell over an undone shoelace, twisting his ankle. Rejistania were snookered. They had no further subs to take off and they were down to 10 men. In this TBF found some strength. Almost immediately TBF found something. Robin Aggleton began a charge, he hit the ball out to Griffifs who controlled it and played it into Edwarde. Edwarde faced the keeper and tapped along to Belmore who pushed it into the net. 5-2 to the bad guys. But TBF were on a roll. Pressuring Rejistania they managed to force a short corner which rivers skilfully converted bringing the score to 5-3. All was not lost, Aaron Odedra’s silky run down the wing on the 80th minute was lucky to deflect off a Rejistanian stick for a long corner. But the long corner was much more successful. Finding it’s way to Griffifs TBF made it 5-4 to Rejistania. TBF now had 10 minutes to score. Things were not looking good. On the 87th minute the score was still 5-4 and Rejistania were keeping TBF at the halfway line. But suddenly out of nowhere, TBF pulled off the manoeuvre of the tournament. Potter, from the left, played it to Rivers who left it to Belmore on the centre spot. Belmore played it along to Odedra who played a through ball to Aggleton. Aggleton weaved past most of the Rejistanians to place the ball in the goal. The crowd went wild.

With TBF equalising the score was brought to 5 all meaning extra time. TBF were ready to start. They took the push back and went up to face the Rejistanians. We’ll just give you the transcript of the commentary “Rivers across to Odedra, Odedra back to Rivers, approaching the D. Rivers plays out wide to Potter who cuts inside. Back to the edge of the D to Belmore, Belmore shoots, GOAL! TBF are the world champions! A fantastic day for the nation! Our national sport is our best! We are the champions”
